: science of manners and social behaviours and fiction of self in Story of my life

Denieul, Séverine 20 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis surveys the connexion between three formes of knowledge: of self, of others and of the world in Casanova's Histoire de ma vie. Often regarded as a great “picture of manners” of 18th century society, its historical, sociological and philosophical dimensions have been slightly appraised, though. Nevertheless, his autobiographical work stands as an remarkable moment in the history of litterature, and in the same time merits a place of his own, for the Venitian is neither a moralist in the classical sense of the word, nor a theorist of manners such as Voltaire. However, he is maybe more gifted than these two models to give account of the complexity of real, thanks to a “science of manners” (as it had been theorized, for instance, by Charles Duclos in his Considérations sur les moeurs de ce siècle) that he implements not only in himself, but also in his fellow men. Nevertheless, Casanova remains unclear about his intentions: should we take seriously this “moral teacher” who wishes to offer his readers a “magical mirror” so they would gaze at -and eventually even correct- themselves? It is worth considering how this ethos of the teacher arises in the philosophical writings of Casanova (most of all, the Essai de critique sur les sciences, sur les moeurs et sur les arts) and in what degree this construction of self can be applied to Histoire de ma vie. This leads us to a third level of analysis: the connexion existing between the fictions of self used by Casanova (first of all, models out of novels) to give account of reality in his Mémoires and his theorisation of his own life.

Écrire « sans conséquence » ? Stratégies d’écriture et ambiguïtés de la figure d’auteur dans l’œuvre de Casanova (1752-1798) / “A man of no consequence” : writing strategies and ambiguities of the auctorial figure in Casanova’s work (between 1752 and 1798)

Brin, Raphaëlle 13 March 2019 (has links)
The invention of the Casanovian myth is based on the writer's occultation. It contradicts an ambition pursued for several decades by the Venetian. In a time when the condition of the “man of letters” is undergoing crucial transformations, Casanova’s successive attempts to achieve recognition in various literary genres were not successful. This study more specifically questions his relationship with the notion of author, considered under the two poles of auctoriality and authority. Between the "refusal of consequences" and "inconsistency", the author appears, in Casanova’s works, as a labile and evasive instance. The instability of his positions is linked to tactical constraints and epistemological biases, but also to a playful and theatrical conception of existence. Casanova's reading habits and writing practices reveal a writer haunted by a strategic conception of literature. The study focuses on these writing strategies, both in the philosophical and autobiographical works, and aims to understand their effects. Long marginalized, Casanova's work offers nevertheless a unique perspective on the evolution of sensibilities and aesthetics over the century, as well as on the upheavals that affect the status of writers, their relationship with the authorities or with the "public".

The present research proposes to make an analysis of the secularization and the faith in the current contemporaneity, in order to lay the foundations for a New Evangelization of the Church. For this, the work of the Spanish philosopher Jos? Casanova, a sociologist of the religion, and the German Joseph Ratzinger, theologian and emeritus pope, is analyzed and put them into dialogue. Casanova's approach elucidates the phenomenon of secularization in its different facets, noting the emergence of public religions and the emergence of a globalized religious pluralism. Ratzinger's reflection (Benedict XVI) urges us to understand the faith as adherence to truth, in a context which he considers a "dictatorship of relativism". Although they are two very different paradigms, it is understood that this interdisciplinary relationship makes it possible to find elements to better understand the transmission of the faith in theological perspective / Os processos de seculariza??o do mundo ocidental trouxeram, em sua esteira, diversas implica??es para a f? crist?.

The Reception of Mo Yan in the British and North American Literary Centers

Liu, Victoria Xiaoyang January 2015 (has links)
This thesis investigates the two major conflicting modes of interpretation applied to Mo Yan’s literary texts diachronically and synchronically in order to reveal both the aesthetic imperative and the liberating force of the British and North American literary centers in receiving literature from the periphery. After an introduction to the centers’ disparate responses to the paradigmatic shift of the local Chinese literary trend in the 1980s, the thesis continues with a theoretical discussion on reader-response theory and the uneven power relations between the literary center and the periphery. Jauss’s concept of horizon of expectation and Fish’s interpretive community are adopted to stress openness in interpretation while Casanova’s conceptualization of the world republic of letters provides the framework to study the competition among interpretive communities for the legitimacy of their respective interpretation. The study of the press reception of Mo Yan focuses on the ongoing shift of horizon of expectation from the dominating political and representational mode of interpretation to one that stresses the literary and fictional nature of literature. The study shows that the imperative in the reception of Mo Yan is the extension of the Western cultural hegemony sustained by an Orientalist dichotomy. The academic promotion in the public sphere, however, shows critics’ effort to subvert such domination by suggesting an alternative mode that brings the Chinese literary context to bear on the interpretation. In addition to this, Mo Yan’s strategic negotiation with the dominating mode of reception is analysed in my close reading of POW!. At the end of the thesis, I call for general readers to raise the awareness of the hegemonic tendency of any prevailing mode of interpretation. By asserting a certain distance, readers enable the openness in interpretation and hence possible communication among different communities.

Synnemar, Per Olov January 2020 (has links)
Michel Houellebecq is since the 1990s one of the most controversial French authors and today one of the most read, in particular after the publication of his work Submission in 2015 where the action takes place in a future France where an Islamist party has been elected to power. Houellebecq has acquired notoriety and popularity far beyond France, including Sweden. He deals with subjects such as religion, morality, globalization, consumerism, liberalism, sexuality, to name a few. The research perspectives linked to Houellebecq's literature are numerous, notably from an ideological/political point of view. Given the complexity of Houellebecq’s image, the question arises of whether there is a link between this image and the mediators that have introduced Houellebecq in Sweden? Based on this, the objective of this essay is to study the type of mediation which Houellebecq has been subjected to in Sweden. More specifically, we will be interested in knowing what are the types of mediators that introduce and present Houellebecq in Sweden and what are the characteristics of the discourse that they produce? In order to achieve this, we have chosen a corpus consisting of 89 newspaper articles published between 1998 and 2018 and selected three mediators that have written three or more articles. As method for analyzing these, we have used the theories of Gisele Sapiro and Pascale Casanova.  The application of these theories has enabled us to discern two distinct types of mediators, and one with a slightly less distinct characteristic.

A critical study of explicit and implicit approaches to secularism by theorists in religious studies

Erlandsson, Johan January 2022 (has links)
This essay studies the implicit and explicit perspectives of Bruce Lincoln, Jürgen Habermas, Talal Asad, Saba Mahmood, Charles Taylor, José Casanova and their approach to secularism as a phenomenon. This is done by categorizing them into three categories. The categories,enlightenment-centered theorists, critical theorists and implicit-theological theorists, all have explicit accounts and implicit forms of reasoning that shape and contextualize their respective approach. The Enlightenment-centered theorists tend to regard secularism as a neutral and peace-keeping statecraft. This approach implicitly contains the idea of a clear division between secular and religious. This implicit form of reasoning I argue is problematically non-reflexive to the theorist’s own standpoint and risks becoming a form of secular ideology. The theorists categorized as critical theorists view secularism more as a type of discourse where what is seen as religious and the secular is inherently fluid. This is then analyzed by them as a special strategy for Western sovereignty. The perspective of the implicit-theological theorists is similar both to the Enlightenment-centered and the criticaltheorists' perspective in that secularism is primarily peace-keeping and that the categories are often fluid. I show that their approach contains theological assumptions that religion responds to a realm which challenges the immanent world. In the last chapter of the essay, I give a normative evaluation of the three approaches to secularism where I argue that while the enlightenment-centered theorists have useful explanatory models, the critical and to a lesser extent implicit-theological approach to secularism are more fruitful for religious studies. They allow for more flexibility in studying the relationship between secular and religious groups as they do not determine the categories in advance. The essay also contains a concluding discussion on the type of problems for philosophy of science and religious studies that arise when secularism and what is seen as the secular is deconstructed.

In orbit: Roberto Bolaño and world literature

Jónsson, Friðrik Sólnes January 2015 (has links)
Chilean author Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) has achieved considerable critical and commercial success among a global English readership. Breaking into the US market, which has an important mediating role for the international circulation of texts, is a rare feat for a non-Anglophone author and requires some explanation. In the spirit of Pascale Casanova’s international criticism, this paper looks at Bolaño’s work as world literature and his persona as a world-literature figure against which theories on the subject can be measured. Furthermore, I will partly use his posthumous novel, 2666, as an example of a work that arises out of this process of becoming-world-literature. The success of Bolaño more or less conforms to the main theories of world literature (Casanova, Moretti, Thomsen), but it also reveals interesting mismatches and problematic aspects that show a need to update existing theories.

The Chilean Catholic Church and the social question : changes and continuities in Catholic thought in Chile, 1891-1935

Sanchez Manriquez, Karin Andrea 21 February 2011 (has links)
The goal of this report is to analyze what was going on about Catholic social teaching in Chile between 1891 and 1935, having as milestones the two main Encyclical about the Social Question, Rerum Novarum (1891) and Quadragesimo Anno (1931). This study will explore and analyze the lives and thoughts of four Chilean priests who were deeply concerned with the Social Question: Mariano Casanova (1833-1908), Archbishop of Santiago between 1886 and 1908; Juan Ignacio González (1844-1918), Archbishop of Santiago between 1908 and 1918; Martín Rücker (1867-1935), Bishop of Chillán between 1923 and 1935; and the Jesuit Fernando Vives (1871-1935), who, although he was never appointed to a higher level of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, had a polemical role in public opinion about the Social question that cost him two long exiles. The argument of this report is that between 1891 and 1935 the Chilean Catholic thought about the Social Question had changes and continuities. Among the first, there are the change of the focus of catholic action from charity to justice, or about the role of the State. The permanencies had to do with the traditional concept that the Catholic Church held, despite its efforts for having a more active role in the modern world. The main examples are the paternalistic attitude towards the workers and the consequent rejection of social mobility. The condition of the poor could be improved, but they always, and their children, would belong to the working class. It was a hierarchical vision of a class society. This contradiction, finally, explains why one of the main purposes of the Catholic social teaching did not succeed: stopping the spread of socialism. Even more, although it had an active goal about the Social Question, the Catholic Church could not stop secularization either. / text
