Au XVIe siècle avant J.-C., Thoutmosis III fit construire un sanctuaire en granit rose dans le temple d’Amon, à Karnak. Cet édifice, nommé Outjes-khâou, « (celui qui) exalte les apparitions d’Amon », servait d’abri principal à la barque du dieu, qui était portée en procession lors des grandes fêtes thébaines. Remplaçant la chapelle Rouge d’Hatshepsout, il resta debout jusqu’à ce que Philippe Arrhidée, le découvrant « ruiné », ordonne sa reconstruction. C’est son sanctuaire de barque en granit qui se dresse actuellement au même emplacement. La première tâche de ce travail a consisté à rechercher les blocs épars qui composaient le sanctuaire thoutmoside. Dispersés sur les 25 hectares du site de Karnak, parfois remployés dans des monuments postérieurs, ces fragments ont été identifiés, photographiés, documentés et leurs décors, dessiné. Les fonds photographiques, les journaux et rapports de fouilles des premiers directeurs des travaux de Karnak ont été dépouillés afin de déterminer la provenance de ces blocs et l’histoire de leur découverte. L’étude architecturale a ensuite été effectuée. L’analyse du décor reconstitué a fourni des données sur les aspects religieux, cultuels et politiques du règne de Thoutmosis III et permis d’identifier certaines de ses constructions. L’élément clé de cette étude est la proposition d’une nouvelle date du remplacement de la chapelle Rouge par Outjes-khâou, pour l’an 30, à l’occasion de la première fête-sed du roi. Suivant cette hypothèse, de nouvelles séquences chronologiques ont été proposées pour la construction et la décoration d’Outjes-khâou et des édifices qui l’entouraient, au cœur de Karnak. / In the 16th century BC, Thutmose III built a red granite sanctuary in the center of the temple of Amun in Karnak. This monument, named Utjes-khau “(the one who) exalts Amun’s appearances”, was used as the main resting place for the sacred bark which was carried in procession during the great Theban feasts. Replacing Hatshepsut’s Red Chapel, the shrine of Thutmose III remained standing until Philip Arrhidaeus, finding it “ruined”, ordered it to be constructed anew. Today, Arrhidaeus’ own granite bark shrine remains in situ. The first task of this research was to look for the blocks of the Thutmosid bark shrine, which were scattered across the 25 hectare area of the Karnak temples and sometimes were reused in later monuments. They were photographed, documented and drawn. The photographic collections, excavation journals and reports of the earlier field directors of Karnak have been analyzed in order to find out the find spot and the history of these blocks’ discovery. Following this, the architectural study of the bark shrine could be made. The analysis of reconstituted decoration allowed the identification of some of Thutmose III’s monuments and provided new data on religious, cultic and political aspects of his reign. The key issue of this study is the proposal of a new date for the replacement of the Red Chapel by Utjes-khau for the king’s first sed-festival in year 30. According to this hypothesis, new chronological sequences are proposed for the building and decoration of Utjes-khau and the monuments surrounding it at the center of Karnak.

L'activité liturgique et commémorative dont l'abbatiale de Saint-Denis est le cadre a des effets sur sa configuration spatiale bien après l'achèvement de sa construction en 1281. L'adjonction de chapelles latérales au flanc nord de la nef, en 1320-1324, ou les créations et transferts d'autels recensés à la fin du Moyen Âge mettent en évidence le phénomène de pression liturgique qui s'exerce sur l'édifice en marge de ses fonctions principales, c'est-à-dire le culte de saint Denis et l'entretien de la mémoire royale. L’étude des chapellenies et services anniversaires fondés à ses autels entre 1108 et le début du XVIe siècle éclaire le réseau mémoriel qui se forme autour de l'abbaye au cours de cette période, mais aussi l'évolution de la politique des moines vis-à-vis des laïcs. À partir du deuxième quart du XIVe siècle, l'abbé et le chapitre cherchent à canaliser le flux dévotionnel des fondations, y compris royales, tandis que les prêtres de la collégiale Saint-Paul voisine et des paroisses de l'exemption dionysienne sont progressivement associés à leur desserte, formant avec les moines une même communauté. La lecture de la répartition des tâches au sein de l’abbatiale et de ses dépendances, qui vise à reconstituer une géographie de la mémoire à Saint-Denis, révèle l'existence d'espaces réservés et un contrôle strict de la destination des autels, notamment de ceux du chevet. Ainsi, la plupart des officiers claustraux de l'abbaye sont associés spécifiquement à l'un des autels à reliques des chapelles rayonnantes depuis, semble-t-il, l'abbatiat de Suger. Cette exclusivité d'usage ne semble pas repérable dans d'autres établissements comparables, apportant un nouvel exemple de l'unicité dionysienne. / The commemorative and liturgical functions of Saint-Denis influenced the abbey’s spatial configuration for centuries after construction of the core of the church ended in 1281. The addition of lateral chapels on the north side of the nave in 1320-1324, like the creation and movement of altars during the next two hundred years, resulted from the expansion of the abbey’s liturgical engagement beyond its primary responsibilities for the cult of Saint Denis and the commemoration of the kings of France. This study of the chaplaincies and anniversary services established between 1108 and the early sixteenth century casts light on the memory network that develops around the abbey during this period, but also the evolution of the abbey’s policies toward the laymen. From the second quarter of the 14th century onwards, the abbots and chapter try to control the foundations flow (including royal ones). Furthermore, the priests of the collegiate church of Saint-Paul located near the abbey as well as parishes enjoying Dyonisian immunity were gradually associated with services at the abbey’s chapels and thereby incorporated into the Dyonisian community. Focused on the services performed within the abbey church and the establishments immediately dependent on it, this study aims to reconstitute a geography of memory at Saint-Denis. It reveals that the services performed at the different altars were strictly controlled, particularly in the restricted area of the chevet. Therefore, apparently from the time of Abbot Suger, each claustral official of the abbey was generally associated with a specific altar in the radiating chapels. This exclusivity thus distinguished Saint-Denis from other similar establishments, providing yet another example of the uniqueness of the royal abbey.

This study presents the results of a usability test of reusable learning objects currently in development in the Instructional Services Department of the UNC-Chapel Hill University Library. The learning objects are Web-based learning modules that are part of a new project, Stories of the American South, and they aim to make digital primary source material more accessible by breaking it into manageable units and providing contextual information. Seven undergraduate students viewed three prototypes, each focused on a unique theme related to the history of the American South. The results suggested that the learning objects are generally usable in design and function, and participants’ responses to design and content were positive. Several changes are suggested to optimize the usability of the learning object prototypes, and further usability testing with other audiences is recommended.

Turistiskt kulturutövande har allt mer börjat innebära samarbetsprojekt mellan kultursektorn och turismnäringen vilket fört med sig både positiva och negativa reaktioner. Uppsatsen presenterar hur det fiktiva kulturarvet med dess autentiska och fiktiva delar kan bidra till både möjligheter och begränsningar inom kulturturistiska samarbetsprojekt.</p> / <p>“A study of fictional context in the intermediary of authentic cultural heritage in Skara and Scotland” is a study about a phenomenon called “fictional cultural heritage”. Two case studies, “the Arnphenomena” and “the Da Vinci- effect”, are analysed from their origin, marketing and different aspects of cultural tourism. Cultural tourism has more frequently been used as collaborated projects between the tourism industry and the heritage industry. These projects have brought both positive and negative reactions. This study shows the “fictional cultural heritage” and how it’s authentic and fictional aspects can entail both possibilities and limitations.</p>

Phase II archaeological testing of the Wesley Chapel Gulf area was conducted in June and July 2004 by six Ball State Anthropology students, including the author, for the Hoosier National Forest. This fieldwork was aimed at assessing the significance of two sites, 120r382 and 120r384, located by the previous surveys. These two sites were considered potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places because of the data they may provide.The purpose of the research is to determine how this unique natural feature was utilized by prehistoric cultures and to assess its role within the regional archaeological context. The research builds upon data recovered during the previous archaeological surveys of the land immediately surrounding the gulf and tests the conclusions of those investigations with recent data from two archaeological sites, 120r382 and 12Or384. Analysis of the cultural material recovered during the 2004 fieldwork illuminates the prehistory of the Wesley Chapel Gulf area and enhances the interpretation of its role in prehistoric settlement patterns within the Hoosier National Forest region. / Department of Anthropology

This diploma work aims to find a convenient solution of an interier design of a damaged new-roman chapel that was built in the destroyed village Kropfschlag/Mýtiny near the city Nové Hrady in the South Bohemia. The introductory theoretical part outlines problems of the World War II and the following expulsion of the Germans from the Czech border (this part is mainly related to the region of Nové Hrady and is accompanied with local eyewitnesse´s memories). In addition, it includes brief history of the village Kropfschlag/Mýtiny. This part is followed with a reflexion about problems of Czech-German relations. The introductory part leads to a search for a suitable symbol.Firstly, the symbol should aptly express the war and post-war sad events. Secondly, it should have a connection to this original land and furthermore the symbol should be appropriate that it could be installed in the interier of the damaged chapel to force the visitors to thing about the history of this land. The final part is devoted to a description of the method used for implementation of the chosen symbol. The practical part includes documentation of the above-mentioned chapel and a minimized 3D implementation of the chosen symbol.
