The master's thesis was linked to line of research 3 - Childhood and Education, the Graduate Program in Education of the Faculty of Science and Technology FCT - UNESP / Presidente Prudente, and aimed to understand the development process of Higher Psychological Functions in particular of human language and study the contributions that literary reading activities planned, organized and properly mediated can promote the process of appropriation and language development in children in the school and the education of children between 2 (two) and 3 ( three years old. The theoretical framework - methodological historical-cultural theory and conducted a grounded empirical research on Materialist Dialectics History method, conducted with the children of a school of Early Childhood Education, research subjects, who experienced learning situations structured activities with literature books children that make up the collection of the National School Library Program (PNBE). For the effectiveness of the intervention process were conducted twelve (12) meetings at the Children's Community Center - KIC "Chalezinho Joy" of Presidente Prudente UNESP, guided by members of the Study Group, Intervention and Research in School Education and Special and Theory historical-cultural (GEIPEE-thc), and the theoretical and practical research conducted by the Center for Reading and Children's Literature and Youth (CELLIJ) Betty Maria Coelho. We decided to work with early childhood education, particularly with children between two and three years old because we believe this age period as crucial in the formation of human higher mental processes, and conceive that to evolve in the communication process (emotional - social) child builds cultural experiences that allow you to advance the human development process. In this sense, education should prioritize educational activities that promote the advancement of children's language, a factor that can and should be encouraged by the various forms of human language, among them the literary language. From the data produced, we conclude that the teaching practices with the literary book contribute to the formation of the skills needed for the formation of human personality, especially children's language, assisting in the development of understanding of the native language, providing imitation capacity, vocabulary expansion and assisting in the formation of language as communication and generalization function.

: En studie om hur genus framställs i vanligt förekommande högläsningsböcker / “What if I had been born as a girl and had to wear leopard printed nylons!” : A study about how gender is represented in commonly used reading books

Pavlovic, Jennifer January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze commonly read children’s literature from a gender perspective. The study also contains a discussion about what these books can convey to students and how they can be used in a didactic perspective. The selection of books has been made based on a research that showed which ten books teachers mostly use for reading aloud across the country. The books have been placed in relation to the current stereotypes found in our society. The study shows that there are a large variety of gender structures in the books, with some characters who follows the norm and some who breaks it. Despite that, generalizations have been made and each book has been divided into category breaks the norm or follows the norm. The result has shown that most of the books breaks the norm, but most books also requires a discussion about gender afterwards in order not to be misinterpreted and spread wrong values. The study therefore reveals that children’s literature can be used in the teaching to highlight and discuss value-based issues, through reading aloud and book discussions.

Just like everyone else, or different like everyone else? : Depictions of intellectual disabilty in Swedish picture books.

Stjernholm, Linda January 2018 (has links)
Picturebooks with characters that have an intellectual disability provides an opportunity for children with and without disabilities of their own to identify with the story. The study examines a selection of five contemporary Swedish picturebooks for children that features characters with an intellectual disability. This study explores how ideologies of normalisation and inclusion influence the way these characters are presented and represented in text and imagery. Drawing from critical discourse analysis the aim of this text is to show if power relations in the story can provide different subject positions for the reading child to take. The results of the analysis show authentic and varied portrayals of characters with intellectual disability. There were two different kind of discourses on normality evident in the picture books: A child like everyone else and different like everyone else. The discourse of a child like everyone else means a perspective where the character with an intellectual disability is portrayed without a focus on the disability. This results in a normalization of the presence of a person with an intellectual disability but neglects to portray the specific experiences that character may have when it comes to their disability. The discourse of being different like everyone else gives a perspective on intellectual disability where difference is normal and part of everyday life. This perspective portrays disability and diversity as part of a normality.

Využití dětské literatury při výuce angličtiny na základní škole / Using Children's Literature in Teaching English at Elementary Schools

Vraštilová, Olga January 2014 (has links)
of the thesis The dissertation thesis deals with the problem of using children's literature in teaching foreign languages at elementary schools. It frames the topic by Czech curricular documents and constituents of the teaching-learning process, provides a historical survey and lists the genres of the children's literature. It characterizes the skill of reading in foreign language teaching and deals with the position of the literary text and lesson planning with children's literature within the foreign language teaching process. Attention is also paid to children's literature as the constituent of the pre-service teacher training. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether children's literature is used in foreign language teaching at elementary schools, whether contemporary textbooks use it, how it is perceived by in-service and pre-service teachers and last but not least what children's literature in the teaching-learning process of foreign languages has to offer. Research tools used for the purposes of the thesis were questionnaires, observations, specially prepared teaching materials based on literary texts and analysis of a textbook. The research proved that children's literature is used both by contemporary textbooks and by teachers in the foreign language education process. Since there is...

George MacDonald's fairy tales in the Scottish Romantic tradition

Pazdziora, John Patrick January 2013 (has links)
George MacDonald (1824-1905) is one of the most complex and significant Scottish writers of the nineteenth century, especially as a writer of children's fiction and literary fairy tales. His works, however, have seldom been studied as Scottish literature. This dissertation is the first full-length analysis of his writings for children in their Scottish context, focusing particularly on his use of Scottish folklore in his literary fairy tales. MacDonald wrote in the Scottish Romantic tradition of Robert Burns, Walter Scott, and James Hogg; by close reading his works alongside similar texts by his compatriots, such as Andrew Lang, MacDonald's own idiosyncratic contribution to that tradition becomes more apparent. His profound knowledge of and appreciation for Christian mysticism is in evidence throughout his work; his use of folklore was directly informed by his exploration of mystical ideas. Hogg is recast as a second Dante, and ‘bogey tales' become catalysts for spiritual awakening. MacDonald's fairy tales deal sensitively and profoundly with the theme of child death, a tragedy that held personal significance for him, and can thus be read as his attempt to come to terms with the reality of bereavement by using Scottish folklore to explain it in mystical terms. Traditional figures such as Thomas Rhymer, visionary poets, and doubles appear in his fairy tales as guides and pilgrims out of the material world toward mystical union with the Divine.

From oral performance to picture books: a perspective on Zulu children’s literature

Ntuli, Cynthia Daphne 02 1900 (has links)
While over the years stakeholders such as publishers and academics have taken a keen interest in research into writing and publishing, they have been less concerned about research into indigenous children‟s literature. In this thesis a comprehensive examination of children‟s literature in the indigenous African languages of South Africa and in Zulu in particular, is presented. Qualitative research methods have been applied, using questionnaires and interviews to gain first-hand knowledge of problems and possible solutions to the dearth of original children‟s literature in the indigenous languages. The data obtained in this regard has proved invaluable to the researcher and, hopefully, will be so to others in the future. Oral folktales narrated before the influence of the missionaries qualify as children‟s literature. The transition from the oral performance of these folktales to the reading of written children‟s texts is discussed in detail. This is achieved by considering the milieu, themes, content, functions and values of this children‟s literature. The discussion of imilolozelo (lullabies) and izilandelo/izidlaliso (game songs) presents the genre of children‟s traditional oral poetry as a form of performance based not only on narrative but also on songs and/or chants interspersed with rhythmical movements to relay their message. Zulu school readers as modern literature for children are also examined by tracing their background and the development of original Zulu children‟s written literature since it was first recorded by the missionaries. Contents and themes of these early readers, dating from the 1800s, are examined and compared with a series of graded readers published in 1962 by C.L.S. Nyembezi. The sixth chapter of the thesis investigates Zulu children‟s picture books as contemporary literature. Various types of picture books and their functions are discussed. Research findings point to an urgent need for the training of African authors in the writing of age-appropriate books in indigenous African languages. Lastly, the study proves that it is feasible to regard traditional oral and modern indigenous texts as children‟s literature. / D. Litt. et Phil. (African Languages)

Meze svobody: Cenzura, regulace a politická korektnost v literatuře po roce 1989 / Censorship in ČR after 1989

SEGI, Stefan January 2016 (has links)
The dissertation thesis examines czech literary censorship after 1989. It presents a polemical addition to a monograph published one year earlier entitled V obecném zájmu [In the General Interest], which covered the same period. The main methodological resource is represented by the books of a British theatrologist Helen Freshwater, who based her inclusive model of censorship on the border crossing of hard and soft censorship. Moreover, she moved her emphasis on discourse as the main indicator of what is considered a censor´s intervention in a particular historical moment. The core of the thesis consists of four chapters, which on the basis of the original research examine the typical cases of censorship and related discourse. These chapters are included in a broader frame of a changing notion of censorship and political correctness in the discussed period. The chapter devoted to the banned skinhead music group Braník is based on the examination of the respective court´s files and the analysis of the changing notion of freedom of speech in the beginning of the 1990s. The chapter about the censorship of literature for children and youth is based on the comparison of various editions of books written by Bohumil Říha. Furthermore, the conditions are observed, under which the interventions to these new editions were identified as censorship. Censorship on internet is treated in the chapter devoted to the regulation of the virtual (literary) child pornography, while the chapter devoted to political correctness focuses on texts and paratexts of splatterpunk literature. This doctoral work should offer a complex picture of changing ways of censorship and thinking after 1989.

Although Marina Colasanti (1937) is considered by the critics as one of the exponents of Brazilian children and youthful literature, and having her production, in this segment, published since the outset 1980s until this moment, still is very unsystematic the study of literary criticism on the writer's work. This work takes as object a significant sample of academic production about the literary production of the writer, leaning on dissertations and on theses that analyze the Children's and the youthful work of Marina Colasanti, as those that turn to literary texts that have been priority addressed to adult readers, considering that, sometimes, these two literary universes are shown merged. Twenty academic papers constitute the corpus of this work, it has been identified through the database Capes and the query at physical and virtual libraries of various universities. From a methodological point of view, the corpus received a homogeneous treatment for data collection, have been subjected to a grid (or "chart") compose of 15 different categories that guided the study of each thesis or dissertation. That systematic analysis propitiated, as research results, concludes in a kind of balance on the critical fortune, being possible sight four main topics that concern to the critical studies on the work of Marina Colasanti, according to different theoretical perspectives: the female specific; the myth; the poetic language; and the love.

We have seen from the last two decades of the 20th century, the rereading of the fairy tale genre both in literature aimed at children in cinema in general, and in the animated film in particular. I realize that the parodic procedure is present in the rereading process, being contemplated, in that gesture, some aspects of traditional fairy tales and lefting intacts other elements. It is from the question of how these narratives work to rereading of fairy tales that I begin the investigation that motivates this research project: how the narrative Shrek!, by William Steig, and its film adaptations, by Dreamworks Animation studios, proceed the genre rereading. The research will include, first, the study of the fairy tale genre, its structure and semantic aspects, from reading the narrative of Steig, to, then, investigate the textual dialogue between the work and the genre it belongs. Later, the story made into a film will be the subject of research to investigate how the fairy tale genre is rereaded by the cinema support from the ingredients provided by the narrative of Steig. I will take into account the stylistic aspects of speech, both the original English. With reference to the film adaptation, we will proceed the same way, but limited in scenes that will focus on as most important for analysis. I assume that the film version of the tale expands the rereading procedure, establishing a broader dialogue with the genre itself. I will concentrate on the nature of the Shrek character, built like an ogre, to check, among other things, the process of grotescalização by wich Steig conducts his text. I will investigate how the grotesque contributes to the rereading of the genre both in written narrative and in its film adaptation. I am, thereby, to contribute to studies of fairy tale genre and for literature studies aimed at children and young people
