Nesse sentido, sugere-se que as idéias de Lobato se apresentam em ¿fases¿ - de afirmação, dúvida e negação do progresso ¿ que talvez se relacionem à vida (sucessos e fracassos) e a atividades de Lobato, acrescidas da situação social e econômica do país / Abstract: This thesis is an analysis of the work O Picapau Amarelo (1939), of Monteiro Lobato, based on the moving of the foreign characters to Dona Benta¿s farm. While many scholars caracterize O Picapau Amarelo as a narrative example based on the fantasy, this study intends to point out the presence, in the work, of social criticism and the author¿s pessimistic view related to the modern and urbanized society. This thesis also inserts O Picapau Amarelo in a line that includes works in which is possible to recognize the different conceptions of Lobato concerning the modernity. O percurso do olhar pelo labirinto: os desafios do leitor contemporâneo / The course of the look through the labyrinth: the challenges of the contemporary readerJoana Marques Ribeiro 05 October 2011 (has links)
This dissertation aims to study the processes imbricated in the course of the reading activity before the tessitura of contemporary artistic productions. For such, we will firstly present historical and social aspects related to the changes in the world of language and its supports, so that we are able to conceive reading as a cultural practice that, for a long time, has been extrapolating the limits of the verbal. Then, we will perform a profound study comprehending reading in its perceptive and cognitive nature, taking as guiding principle the human sense of vision and observing how, from the latter, the reading manifests itself in a labyrinthine action of looking, in a complex internal, mental and cognitive movement of search and production of senses. We will seek to further observe reading as a peculiar and unique activity, with respect to each reading and each reader, presenting reflections on the construction of the look, that is, from the point of view that the reader makes use of to read texts, the beings, in short, the world around him. Finally, we will analyze the film Pan\'s Labyrinth (2006), by Guillermo Del Toro, focusing on the relations established between literature and cinema and showing how the own cinema resources, as well as their inter-relationship of codes and languages, lead to construction of senses. Concomitantly, the analysis will show the challenges to the reader related to the languages employed, but that go beyond them. Identifying the specificities of each narrative form (literary and cinematographic) and its interlacement, we will observe to what extent the ample understanding of the film requires, by the reader, the reconstruction of the work relations with society and with other texts, times, places and speeches; the unveiling of the text as aesthetically developed form; and the search for a possible interpretation that sees the work as an object symbolizing the world. Thus, through analysis, we will seek to identify ways that seem to mark the course of the reading activity and the readers place considering the expressive forms of our present.

A morte, o vazio e o amor: uma análise interdisciplinar de O urso e o gato montês, de Kazumi Yumoto / Death, emptiness and love: an interdisciplinary analysis of The Bear and the Wild Cat, by Kazumi YumotoLuciana Fonseca de Arruda 07 December 2017 (has links)
In this work we present the book The Bear and the Wild Cat by the Japanese author Kazumi Yumoto. This is the third of her books translated to Portuguese that deals with the theme of death, it is also approached in two other of her children\'s books. In this book, along with illustrator Komako Sakai, Yumoto constructs a unique narrative in which the reader is confronted with mourning and goes through the process of denial until the acceptance in which the character walks to. We make an analysis of death based on Kubler-Ross\'s theory of the stages of mourning, with the emptiness generated by it by the absence of the loved one taking Okanos point of view about the empty orient, and finally, the love that is the connection link of everything, which is presented to us in the characters of this narrative. Based on theories of image analysis, psychology and pedagogy, we focus on a study of the book thinking about literature playing a role of training and humanization of the individual.

This dissertation investigates contemporary texts that may propose resistance to patriarchal hegemonic discourse in gender representations in Children`s Literature. We will analyze selected texts of the author Ana Maria Machado in the perspective of finding discourses that aim to help in the breakdown of male and female representations, within the dichotomous and excluding logic considered as hegemonic. We will try to address how the female characters are constructed by the author and if the discourse offered helps to deconstruct the binary stereotypes between the genres. The title "Coisa de Menina, Coisa de Menino" is a reference to the separation between the two sexes, which ends up attributing to each one of them strict and exclusive conducts. To analyze the theme, object of this study, first, we will do a small approach on the concepts of childhood and children's literature. Secondly, we will conceptualize the term Gender, evidencing the social and historical character of its construction. In the end, we will discuss the importance of Children's Literature in allowing the child's contact with models that value plurality as threads for the construction of their identities.

This dissertation proposes a theoretical approach on some issues related to children's literature, based on an analysis of Lygia Bojunga's The Yellow Handbook (1976/2015), taking as a background psychoanalytic theory, the aesthetics of reception, the sociology of childhood and the theories and critiques of children's literature. Among several questions, some of them were indispensable to the delineation of the present research: what can be considered as "childhood"? What delimits a so-called children's literature? How does the reading process carried out by a child occur? Is it possible to consider that creative reading has similarities to playing? Can reading, like playing, be considered a resource of articulation of signifiers that operates, therefore, effects on the subject-reader? The field today named children's literature is difficult to approach, considering that it involves social, cultural, economic and political factors. Therefore, it is also sought to locate such impasses so that the theme is taken in its complexity, without being reduced to the stereotypes that accompany it, considering that the place attributed to the child-reader interferes in the cultural production aimed at such a public. In addition to the theoretical tools used, it is used the books of the same author, Paisagem (2013), Fazendo Ana Paz (2007a) and Livro - um encontro (2007b), due to the fact that these works express the author's gaze, in a creative way , on the process of reading, writing and the relation between them.

Going beyond the domestic sphere : women's literature for children, 1856-1902Kim, Koeun January 2015 (has links)
My thesis explores how female writers of the Golden Age of children’s literature used their domestic stories to convey their visions of a more desirable society to their child readers, and thus to widen their influence beyond the homely sphere. My first chapter reconsiders the nineteenth-century historical circumstances wherein the woman and the child came to be constructed and enshrined as the domestic woman and the Romantic child within the home, and excluded from the public discourses. I then consider how in domestic stories women writers tried to overcome this shared deprivation of autonomy with the child, focusing on the works of Charlotte Yonge, Juliana Ewing, and Mary Louisa Molesworth. It emerges that these women writers were all keen to encourage their young readers to question the boundaries that separate home from the public realm, and to imagine a society wherein these dividing lines would be mitigated and even be extinguished. The thesis argues that these female writers’ literary efforts to exhaust the potential of the domestic story, and that their motivation to provide their child readers a sense of agency were integral in the development of Golden Age children’s literature. Charlotte Yonge’s technique of evoking sympathy for the child characters forged a more intimate relationship between adult author and young reader, and initiated the unsettling of the hierarchy between old and young, and author and reader. Juliana Ewing’s experiments with child narrators and her mingling of adventure and fantasy stories with domestic stories showed successive writers the various directions the domestic story could go. Mary Louisa Molesworth’s nursery stories realized the purpose of Ewing’s literary experiments, as her stories’ natural interweaving of quotidian nursery and fairy tale elements not only alleviated the hierarchy between fantasy and domestic realism, but also opened an era in which the blending of these two modes would become one of the most popular genres in children’s literature.

Heidi Johanny Spyriové - české překlady v kontextu doby / Heidi by Johanna Spyri and its Czech TranslationsŘeřichová, Michaela January 2017 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is a two-part novel Heidi's Lehr- und Wanderjahre (1880) and Heidi kann brauchen, was es gelernt hat (1881) by Swiss author Johanna Spyri and its two Czech translations from 1933/34 and 1971. The theoretical part deals with the author's personality and her work. The original text is then put into cultural-historical and literary context of that time and is examined from literary scientific and linguistic points of view. Subsequently, the thesis describes translation norms of the given time periods, personalities of both translators and briefly presents their translations. In connection with the latter translation, text adaptation and text manipulation issues are also discussed. Further attention is paid to the specifics of translation of children's literature and the reception of both the original text and the translations. The empirical part of the thesis provides a translation analysis of selected parts of the original and the translations and concludes with a comparison of both Czech versions.

Translating and adapting fictional speech : the case of Philip Pullman's 'Northern Lights'Read, Andrew January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is an examination of the effects of translation into French and of adaptation for the stage, in English, on the dialogue of Philip Pullman’s novel Northern Lights (published in North America as The Golden Compass). The study focuses on the speech of Lyra, the novel’s protagonist, in terms of both its linguistic qualities and the functions it supports within the novel and the trilogy of which it forms part, His Dark Materials. The study aims to identify the ways in which not just the linguistic surface of fictional speech is affected by translation and adaptation but also the degree to which the roles played by the dialogue in the source text are reflected or transformed in the different versions. The unusual research design, involving a comparison of the effects of interlingual translation and intermedial adaptation on the same text, consists of two main elements. In the first quantitative section, the relative incidence of three variables is measured for the purposes of identifying how features of spoken style and non-standard variation are treated. This analysis is followed by a detailed qualitative evaluation of a small number of dialogue passages that exemplify the key linguistic features and likely textual functions of Lyra’s speech in the novel. The passages concerned are compared with equivalent stretches of dialogue in the French translation and the theatrical script. The study finds evidence to suggest that Pullman uses dialogue in support of characterisation, plot, and also ideological and intertextual concerns. All of these aspects are affected, in subtle but significant ways, by the different decisions made by the translator and the dramatist in respect of Lyra’s speech. The study also finds that aspects of both user-related and situation-related variation in fictional speech may be worthy of further research.

Based on a study on Ziraldo´s book A Turma do Pererê: 365 dias na Mata do Fundão, this piece of work presents some reflection on the language used in comic books (or comic strips). The book above mentioned was chosen for this study because it is part of 2012´s Library in the School National Program (PNBE 2012), a range of books aimed at the early years of Elementary School in Brazil. The study means to carry out an analysis on enunciation procedures used in the construction of the work, and which can be analyzed in the context of schooled reading, meaning to contribute to students´ literacy learning process. The research can be justified on the fact that students tend to present poor reading skills, as shown in assessments made public about this area, on the complexity of the cultural products aimed at the young reader, and, besides, on the insertion of comic strips in the PNBE range of books. The investigation follows the Education, Language and Technology approach, and it is part of the Post-Graduation in Education Program of the Caxias do Sul University (PPGEd/UCS). It is also part of a research project called “Challenges and welcomings in children´s literature: the mediation of the literary reading”, which has been approved by FAPERGS and which means to study the books that have been short-listed to make up the PNBE range of books for the early years of Elementary Education. Among the authors whose ideas have contributed to the research there are: Mikhail Bakhtin (2006), Lev S. Vygotsky (1998), both of which helped on reflections upon language; Will Eisner (2012), Moacy Cirne (1972, 1973, 2000), Álvaro de Moya (1993, 2002), Paulo Ramos (2009) and Valdomiro Vergueiro (2009), who discuss aspects of the language used in comic strips; Brian Street (1984), with his studies on literacy, and Joseph Schwarcz (1982), who elaborates on the role played by illustration on children´s books, among others. The study is organized in chapters, which contemplate (a) the relations between education and language, considering the school as a space for literacy; (b) the methodological processes of the research, and (c) an analysis of the work and indication of the elements present in the making up of the title, which should be taken into consideration in the mediation of literary reading. It was the analytical description of aspects of the work chosen that guided the method, aiming to pinpoint the procedures used in the construction of this discursive modality present in the Brazilian schools´ libraries. As a result, it stands out in the studied corpus that comic books contemplate themes that make it possible to identify the student with the expressed conflict, as it presents situations that are present in daily life and that there are instances in the way the narrative is enunciated which need to be taken into consideration when mediated reading is proposed in the school environment. Last but not least, one highlights the importance of teachers being familiar with the language used in comic strips, besides its specificity as a genre so as to make it possible for them to contribute for the students´ literacy.
