Exploring social workers’ integration of the person-centred approach into practice within different working contexts

Mbedzi, Rembuluwani Paul 21 September 2011 (has links)
The social work profession requires the accumulation of theory, knowledge, skills and their integration into practice. The department of social work at UNISA trains students according to the person-centred approach (PCA). The question thus arises whether the social workers trained in PCA at UNISA are able to integrate theory into practice in their different areas of employment. Exploring this would give the department of social work an opportunity to re-visit the teaching of PCA and make some improvements if necessary. The qualitative study was conducted with social workers employed in different welfare organizations in Pretoria. The following themes emerged from the analysis: the perceived significance of building relationship with clients, the organizational influence in counselling, unique experiences with regard to colleagues who graduated from other institutions, challenges in handling a conflict or crisis situation, and lastly the nature of statutory cases. The conclusions were drawn and recommendations were presented. / Social Science / M.A. (Mental Health)

Assessing Processes of Connection and Development in Observations of the Therapeutic Relationship

Unknown Date (has links)
The present study applies Driver and Gottman’s (2004a) Turning System to observations of the therapeutic relationship in a quasi-experimental between and within groups design. A sample of 63 full counseling sessions (21 first sessions with clients who return for four sessions, 21 first sessions for clients who terminate therapy prior to four sessions, and 21 fourth sessions) were collected from a university counseling center in South Florida. Clients and clinicians also completed self report evaluations of the therapeutic relationship that were also included in this study (Working Alliance Inventory – Short Form, and the Real Relationship Inventory). A series of multivariate analysis of the variance (MANOVA) tests were performed to assess for significant differences in Turning System behavior between return and dropout groups in the first sessions of therapy, as well as for significant differences between return groups’ first and fourth sessions. Correlation analyses were run for client and therapist self report data and Turning System codes. Overall, the Turning System codes did not predict attrition from therapy; however, significant effects were found for specific behaviors in the return versus dropout comparisons, including client’s uses of negative bids, high level questions, and preoccupied away responses. The Turning System also did not predict clear differences between behaviors in ongoing therapy, though significant effects were again found for individual behaviors enacted by both clients and therapists. Significant negative correlations were also found for return group clients between specific behaviors and ratings of the therapeutic alliance, such as high level questions and preoccupied away responses. Individual behaviors in the therapist return group, such as high level questions, negative bids, and interruptions, correlated negatively with ratings of the therapeutic alliance. The results of this study are presented in an effort to synthesize the data into a narrative for developing effective therapeutic relationships and guidance for future research. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

A expansão do self de presidiários: encontro da psicologia com a arte e a profissão / The expansion of the prisoner´s selves: the meeting of psychology with art and profession

Junqueira, Maria Hercilia Rodrigues 12 August 2005 (has links)
The belief in the auto-regulative human potential, in the persons inherent ability to lead her or his life in search of something better and the faith in the updating directive tendency of everything in the Universe moved this work from the very beginning. The hypothesis that the prisoners could process significant changes in their lives once we offer the needed and sufficient conditions in order to expand the self permeated our activities. Searching to understand the expanding process of the self in the meeting of psychology, art and profession, we based on Carl Ramson Rogerss and August Boals works as support. This study explored how psychology (psychotherapy), the art (theatre) and profession (job) may facilitate the growing process of prisoners, helping them to rethink and plan their lives, making the social, familiar and personal way back possible. We collected eleven reports from eight participant collaborators of the Projeto Pontilhado in the city of Porto Velho-Rondônia, Brazil, whose play was based on their history of life. This project was developed in the years 1999 and 2004. We use the qualitative approach taking into consideration the action-research. The tool for the data collect was a non-directive personal interview recorded in audio. In the search for meaningful elements visible in their statements, we searched to gather the common experiences that led to the transformative process in their lives: the unveiling of the self; Psychology perception; Art Perception; Profession Perception; Predisposition to change; the end of the project and ways of taking a person out of criminality. The perception that the prisoners had of their own organism, their experiences, their relations among themselves, their surroundings and the consciousness of these happenings made them grow, develop and transform themselves in persons in a work together with their organism. The opening of their interior experience and of the outer world was possible due to psycodramatic theatrical exercises, psychotherapeutic work, in the development of a productive and paid activity, beside the work together out of the foreseen activities. It was a set of activities which made possible to the prisoners and ex-prisoners to get free from psychological barriers which prevented any human growth. This study revealed that there is a possibility of contributing to a better life of people who are in prison. It is possible to offer new forms of viewing life out of prison. In the expansion of the self the psychodrama and the psychotherapeutic meeting help this growth; the profession supports people in the moment of crime when the person is really willing to leave the criminal world.

The method that can change practice : a grounded theory study of Marte Meo therapists in dementia health care

Andersen, Astrid Elisabeth January 2009 (has links)
Purpose This qualitative study aimed to increase understanding of what the consequences have been for Marte Meo therapists in dementia health care to have learned the method. Method We used grounded theory to analyze eight open interviews. Results The informants, all Marte Meo therapists reported that they gained a method they long have missed for dementia health care. The Marte Meo method helps them detect tacit knowledge, support and enforce known knowledge, and strengthen their self-confidence. They also gained increased awareness and a common language leading to an improved working environment and the individual needs of the patients are better seen and met. Conclusion The study shows that Marte Meo method has positive influence both because the staff have an improved working environment and because the staff experience that they are better able to detect the patients needs after having learned the method. /
ISBN 978-91-85721-76-4

Applicability of the Kawa Model as a Framework for the Occupational Therapy Process / Applicability of the Kawa Model as a Framework for the Occupational Therapy Process

Majapuro, Hanna January 2017 (has links)
Background: Kawa is a client-centered and culturally sensitive occupational therapy model. Discussion has aroused if Kawa would be a suitable model for the clientele, which is culturally more diverse than before. Aim: To investigate how occupational therapists have applied Kawa for the occupational therapy process. Material and Methods: This qualitative study involved 15 occupational therapists, who had applied Kawa to their clients. They got selected on social media by ‘snowball sampling’. Data was collected using an electronic questionnaire. Directed content analysis was conducted, guided by The Occupational Therapy Intervention Process Model. Results: Kawa was considered a client-centered model enhancing therapeutic relationships. By using Kawa, therapists gained relevant information through the client’s subjective self-report. However, observation of the client’s occupational performance omitted. Kawa did not provide sufficient tools, and therapists had to apply knowledge from other models. Conclusions: Kawa provided a strong starting point for the occupational therapy process by enhancing the therapeutic relationships and the client’s subjective self-report, but it did not guide the therapist to complete the whole occupational therapy process. Significance: This study proved that Kawa is a useful model for developing therapeutic rapport and gaining information through self-report. The study suggests that Kawa should be developed further or combined with occupation-based models.
