The Sutras as Poetry: Wang Wei's Use of Buddhist Philosophy as Poetic Image

Zhang, Yan 01 September 2020 (has links)
The present academic studies on Wang Wei usually focus on his landscape poems and claim that these landscape poems imply Buddhism. Their methods usually analyze Wang Wei’s Buddhist tendencies from his life experience. But it needs more textual analysis to prove that the relationship between his poem and Buddhism. The Introduction section provides the relationship between the Buddhist principles and Wang Wei’s Buddhist poems. The Buddhist principles were figuratively represented in Wang Wei’s poems by describing certain images from Buddhist Sutras. Chapter 1 presents the analysis of the couplets of each Buddhist poem through their connection to Buddhist doctrines. Chapter 2 summarizes the characteristics of Wang Wei’s Buddhist poems and emphasizes the use of Buddhist philosophy as a poetic image.

Krig och poesi i samtida Ryssland : En studie om krigets skildring i Poezija poslednego vremeni: Chronika

Karlsson, Angelica January 2023 (has links)
This study analyzes a recently published collection of poetry on the ongoing Russo-krainian war. Against a background of Russia’s new oppressive laws concerning the fact that a person can be sent to prison for up to 15 years for spreading “false information” about the war the study aims to investigate the way poets express themselves in the collective work Poeziia poslednego vremeni: Khronika, published in Saint Petersburg in the fall of 2022. The study was conducted through content analysis and close reading of selected poems of the collection. Conclusions that was drawn from the study is that the collective work contains poems with a strong anti-war message. Poets take a clear standpoint in the collection against the Russian regime and the war and oftentimes use a satirical and ironic way to undermine both the war and the Russian regime, which is remarkable considering the risk taken when speaking out against the war in today’s Russia.

Readings Of Chinese Poet Xue Tao

Yu, Lu 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Xue Tao was one of the Tang Dynasty's best-known female poets. Her poems are beautiful and of her own style, but there have only been a few of studies on them. This study comprises nine close readings of her thirteen poems most of which can be defined as yongwu poems, as well as a conclusion which summarizes the main characteristics in these poems. The methodology of this research is based on the theory of New Criticism and combined with sinology. Every poem is studied as an independent entity, but its allusions and images are examined in the history of Chinese poetry. This study attempts to deepen the study of Xue Tao’s poetry and readers’ understanding of it.

Assemblage of base building mechanics and narrative in Subnautica

Lindell, Matilda, Tamim, Mohammed January 2023 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to answer the question of how does Subnautica (Unknown Worlds Entertainment, 2018) incorporate base building mechanics into its narrative progression? This research was conducted using a close reading methodology for the purpose of closely examining the key points of interest. The two authors conducted individual playthroughs of the game where they looked at the base building mechanics and narrative in Subnautica (Unknown Worlds Entertainment, 2018) using a lens constructed from theories of cognitive narratology, emergent narrative, and narrative gameplay mechanics. This lens used assemblage theory prominently as well to bridge the gaps between the previously mentioned theories. The results of the research describe in detail the inner workings of Subnautica’s (Unknown Worlds Entertainment, 2018) approach to base building mechanics and how it affects the different forms of narrative in the game. This research is beneficial for researchers and game developers that seek a deeper understanding of the impact that the integration of base building mechanics and narrative progression has on survival games.

Den starka, sårbara och subtila : En analys om röstens konstruerande av Greta Thunberg i dokumentärfilmen Greta

Roininen, Linda January 2023 (has links)
The climate issue has been in medias spotlight, especially through recent years. On a Friday in August 2018, Greta Thunberg sat down outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm to strike, with her placard "School strike for the climate". She quickly gained media attention and soon - with her help, the movement "Fridays for Future" was formed. Previous research shows that Greta's time in the public eye has been shaped by the media and how her fight for the climate have been creating different directions in society. Based on these factors, the purpose of this study is primarily to try to contribute to a deeper understanding of how Greta is constructed through the voice in the documentary film I am Greta. To answer the study's questions, a methodological approach is used with its origins in the hermeneutic theory of interpretation, which concerns Bill Nichols' theories about voices in documentary films. The result of this study shows that the construction of the voice in the documentary is part of a larger complex system that includes other several voices and other documentary narrative strategies.

Text Complexity and Close Reading: Teachers' Perceptions of the Language Arts Florida Standards and Curriculum Implementation

Diaz-Davila, Clare 01 December 2014 (has links)
The Florida Department of Education revised the Common Core State Standards into what are now known as the Florida Standards in February 2014, approving 99 revisions to the original standards that were accepted in 2010 (Dunkelberger, 2014). The purpose of this research was to identify current teachers# attitudes towards the new Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS), specifically regarding teachers# perceptions of text complexity and close reading as enacted in the reading curriculum. Additionally, this study will attempt to identify how teachers# attitudes impact their implementation of the new standards. This research used a self-administered survey to collect the teacher perceptions of the LAFS in six different categories. The sample entailed the participation of 21 practicing teachers from the Central Florida area. The survey revealed that, although teachers don't necessarily dislike the construction of the standards, they feel that they are not knowledgeable in some integral areas of the LAFS, such as text complexity and close reading. The implications of the results are discussed, and some improvements for the future of the LAFS are given.

Virtuální smrt v počítačových hrách / Virtual death in video games

Štěpánová, Petra January 2013 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is virtual death in video games. In theoretical part, the concept of avatar (player's agent in the game world) is defined, concerning the relationship between player and avatar as well as the main characteristics of the avatar. The aim of the theoretical core of this thesis is to introduce virtual death; because of various expressions of death in many games, it is difficult to describe virtual death generally. Virtual death, which is compared also to the real death, is revealed as a communication of player's failure. What can not be separated from virtual death is the instant resurrection of the avatar, and also the means how to avoid virtual death. The practical part of the thesis offers a close reading of the computer role-playing game Planescape: Torment, focusing on the theme of death. Unlike most mainstream games, Torment presents the player with sophisticated perspectives on the matters of life, death, immortality and responsibility. Even the high-order goal of the main character (which becomes the goal of the player as well) is to gain knowledge about himself and then willingly die. This stands in a sharp contrast to usual narratives, forcing the player to suppress the life-saving reflex and let his avatar die in the end. The comparative method is used to identify...

Making it difficult: modernist poetry as applied to game design analysis

Asad, Mariam 05 April 2011 (has links)
The process of reading a modernist poem is just as much a process of deconstructing it: the language is designed to make meaning through inefficient means, like the aforementioned fragmentation and assemblage. The reader must decode the text. This is what I want to extract as a point of entry to my videogame analysis. The process of reading is not unlike the process of playing. Instead of linguistic structures, a player must navigate a game‟s internal rule system. The pleasure for both the reader and player comes from decoding the poem and game, respectively. I am not making claims that relationships between modernist poetry and videogames are inherent or innate. Similarly, I am not providing a framework to apply one medium to the other. Instead I want to investigate how each medium uses its affordances to take advantage of its potential for creative expression. I do not consider poetry or literature to be superior to videogames, nor am I invoking the argument that videogames should imitate earlier media. My goal is to compare specific modernist poems and videogames to see how each medium makes meaning through its respective processes.

Hur kan de ha tänkt? : En retrospektiv reflektion kring ansvaret för jämställdhet i och under kortfilmsproduktioner

Reidefors, Cecilia January 2018 (has links)
There are a many types of digital media productions and in this paper, film is seen as one of them. This study focuses on who can be seen as responsible for their production – the designer for their design, the director for their film. To explore this, the paper uses a qualitative method to first explore a number of short films and then analyze the findings with the use of retrospective reflection. To do this, the paper combines mainly design theory, feminist theory and film theory. The main focus of the paper is to  use retrospective reflection to explore the responsibility of equality in short film productions. The study relies on a template, which has been developed during the process.  Overall, the paper has a focus on equality and whether or not the portrayal of men and women in film change when a woman is directing compared to when a man is. The conclusion of the paper is that the short film industry in Sweden is both more and less equal than the film industry in total, and that retrospective reflection is an effective tool to use in this kind of study.
