Cultural Competence in the Archive: A Case Study of the University of Houston Hip Hop Collection

Jacinto, Irlanda Esteli January 2013 (has links)
Hip hop is a counter cultural movement that emerged in the 1970s in the South Bronx; it has since grown to be a global movement. It is a counter culture that emerges in the post-segregated, post-industrial, and globalized world. Since 2002, archival collections that document hip hop have manifested within academic institutions. Placing hip hop in academic institutions that have historically served as manifestations of hegemony can lead to codification and commodification. This case study examines the University of Houston Hip Hop Collection and explains the establishment of the archive using the cultural competence framework. It concludes that staff at the University of Houston is culturally competent. The case study suggests that building culturally competent archivists can be tool to ensuring representation within an archive of all facets of society.

The development of competitive intelligence (CI) in South Africa with special reference to the CI practices in a pharmaceutical company / Marié-Luce Muller

Muller, Marié-Luce January 2004 (has links)
Competitive intelligence (CI) is one of the fastest growing fields in the business world South Africa included; yet little quantitative research has been conducted or published on the development and use of CI in South Africa. CI is concerned with the methods companies use to monitor their competitors, their own competitive position, and to improve their competitiveness. It is not a new business activity but modern CI is more focused, formal, organised and actionable. CI is not an activity limited to a few countries or companies in certain industries; it is a worldwide phenomenon. Most of the Fortune 500 companies use CI extensively. Literature shows some countries such as France, Japan, Sweden and the USA to be more advanced in their embracement of CI as a means to enhance competitiveness. In these countries, CI is a recognised business discipline and has become a major source to achieve competitive advantage. They are also developed in terms of the role government plays in supporting CI activities. Another indicator of CI as a growing practice worldwide is the development of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP). Globally, SCIP chapters have taken root in all continents. Moreover, SCIP Europe, SCIP Italia, SCIP Australia and SClP Deutschland are part of a growing worldwide network of SCIP affiliates, i.e. independent organisations that have formally affiliated with SCIP. Leaders in the field of CI training are France, Japan, Israel, Sweden, and Korea while Europe is beginning to appreciate the importance of CI as a corporate tool. Some practitioners suggest that in the near future, all MBA programmes in Europe will include CI as a core subject and that the investment community will be looking at companies' track records in terms of their CI practices (Blagg, 2002). In comparison, CI in South Africa is still in its infancy (Muller, 1999). However, with South Africa's competitive landscape being reshaped, the need for CI as a means to enhance competitiveness has grown rapidly. Research into CI in South Africa has been limited. The first comprehensive research projects were launched in the beginning of the century. Very few companies then knew about CI, let alone practice it. But that did not mean that companies did not monitor competitors and other external events. There was just no formalised structured approach in assessing their environment. Since then, a team of researchers came together to find an answer to the question: What is the level of development and deployment of CI in South Africa? The findings of the research indicated a realisation among South African companies that they will have to take pro-active steps based on available information in order to survive. An assessment of current programmes in CI at South African learning institutions revealed a lack of formal academic programmes. Current programmes are mainly limited to short courses in basic CI principles. At present there are no CI courses presented at secondary schools in South Africa, and although some progress has been made in the development of courses, much still needs to be done. Programmes should also be presented at business schools at MBA level or at least as part of management and leadership training. A detailed description of the development of CI in South Africa in the areas of research, consulting and training is provided in Chapter 2. To illustrate the CI practice in a company, a case study is discussed in Chapter 3 to examine and analyse the development of the CI capability in one of the most prominent pharmaceutical companies. The pharmaceutical industry provides an appropriate example of an industry that undergoes constant and rapid change. Various areas of CI still need to be researched including CI in the academy as well as further studies on how companies in South Africa conduct CI. This study aims to add to the growing database of research into CI in South Africa. For the first research article (chapter 2) two research methods were used i.e. a literature study irto CI as a business discipline and a qualitative design (interviews) to obtain information from leaders in CI in South Africa. Given that CI is still in its infancy, the sample was small and included all recognised knowledgeable people on Clin South Africa. For the second research article (chapter 3) the same two research methods were applied. Both a qualitative design (interviews) and a questionnaire were used for the collection of primary information on the targeted company. The interviews were conducted with the CI manager in the company that was targeted for the case study. The sensitive nature of CI meant that permission for the publication of the case study had to be obtained provided a disguised name was used. / Thesis (MA (Public Management and Governance))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

Meninė ekspermentinė drabužių kolekcija "Kelionė gyvenimu - Antevesinai" / Artistic experimental clothing collection Journey throw life - Antevesinai

Vaičiulytė, Jovita 27 August 2012 (has links)
Bachelor's work examines the notion of travel thru life, travel interpretation in the art work's, fashion clothing in order to understand better this phenomenon and on its basis designed artistic experimental clothing collection. Theoretical analysis of the information revealed that the trip is part of an integral part of human life. Journey starts from the first vague childhood and lasts until late old age. Traveling thru life, we experience a lot of different sensations of which we are learning, the child learns to eat, breathe, feel, walking since its birth as we each start our journey since our life began. Man can not stand still, as his journey through life is short he needs to reach more and more, it is the destination of his life, he travels to and from one life stage to another. From infancy to childhood, from childhood to adolescence, from adolescence to adulthood to mature people, and the farther the journey, the more he improves himself and his environment.

A critical assessment of the dendrochirotid subfamilies, sclerodactylinae and thyoninae, with the taxonomic management of the "supergenus" thyone (echinodermata : holothuroidea)

Arumugam, Preyan. 10 October 2013 (has links)
The key character separating the dendrochirotid families Sclerodactylidae (sensu Pawson & Fell, 1965) and the Phyllophoridae (sensu Pawson & Fell, 1965), i.e. entire or undivided radial processes to the calcareous ring in the former and sub-divided processes in the latter, is unjustified since most sclerodactylid species also have subdivided processes. It is here assumed that the basis of elevating the subfamily Sclerodactylinae Panning to family level was established on a misinterpretation or mistranslation of the original diagnosis of this subfamily or a lapsus calumni meaning “plates” instead of “processes”. Panning (1949) categorically states that the processes in the Sclerodactylinae are composed of 3–4 large pieces of calcite and only as an exception they are unbroken. Since Pawson & Fell gave no other distinction between the Sclerodactylidae and the Phyllophoridae, the former is here considered an invalid taxon and its three current subfamilies (Sclerodactylinae, Sclerothyoninae Thandar and Cladolabinae Heding & Panning) are re-assigned to the Phyllophoridae. This family now includes six subfamilies: Cladolabinae, Phyllophorinae Östergren, Sclerodactylinae, Sclerothyoninae, Semperiellinae Heding & Panning and Thyoninae Panning. The diagnosis of the Sclerodactylinae, restricted by Thandar (1989), is now modified to include also those forms whose radial and interradial plates may be slightly sub-divided but still form a short tube. Of the eleven genera placed within this subfamily subsequent to its erection, only ten of these remain. Neothyone Deichmann is a preoccupied name for which Lisacucumis is here proposed as a replacement. Thandar’s (1989) diagnosis of the Thyoninae is here accepted, however, the genus Thorsonia Heding is transferred to the Sclerodactylinae. Of the 66 nominal species which currently stand in the “supergenus” Thyone Jaeger, 10 are transferred to Havelockia Pearson within the Sclerodactylinae, while one species is regarded as a synonym of H. herdmani Pearson. In addition, six species are transferred to Stolus Selenka within the Thyoninae. Finally, three species are transferred to Sclerothyoninae, two within Sclerothyone Thandar and one within Temparena Thandar. Two species show an uncertain affinity to Thyone and are temporally removed from the genus. Furthermore, two species currently classified within Havelockia are transferred to Thyone. The now remaining 46 species are separated into seven groups based on the composition of their introvert deposits: tables only (8 spp.), rosettes only (5 spp.), tables and rosettes (21 spp.), tables and plates/?reduced tables (2 spp.), rosettes and plates/?reduced tables (3 spp.), plates only (2 spp.), or introvert deposits absent or unknown (5 spp.). Regrettably, no other character could be used in conjunction with the above to suggest at least sub-generic levels. Within the genus Havelockia, Cucumaria redimita Sluiter indicates an affinity with Pentamera Ayres. It is here transferred to this genus within the Thyoninae. Havelockia, now containing 17 species, is also revised. Keys, diagnoses and figures are provided for all nominal species now included in Thyone and Havelockia. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2011.

Factors in the establishment of institutional repositories: a case study of the Western Cape Higher Education Institutions

Claassen, Jill January 2009 (has links)

In the academic world, open access institutional repositories (IRs) are beginning to play a vital role in storing and disseminating scholarly communication. Through this method, higher education institutions are able to showcase their intellectual outputs and to contribute to sharing and building knowledge. This evolutionary process of scholarly communication is an important feature of knowledge societies. Furthermore, IRs allow scholars to make known the research they are involved in, which can result in their academic reputation improving, as well as the reputations of the institutions they represent.

The purpose of this study is to examine the processes of establishing IRs in the four tertiary education institutions in the Western Cape, which form part of the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC). Within this consortium is the collaborative library project, the Cape Library Consortium (CALICO), which represents the four academic library services. The researcher investigated whether the four Western Cape Higher Education Institutions have established IRs and their experiences in doing so. They are examined in the light of the guidelines for successful IRs already established in the international professional literature on IRs. Throughout the study, the partnerships that are needed for the success of IRs, with a specific emphasis on the crucial role that the librarian might play in this regard, are a central focus.

The study is a qualitative case study, relying on interviews with key informants from the four HEIs and analysing policy and other supporting documents. The study confirms comment in the literature that IRs evolve in &ldquo / messy&rdquo / and &ldquo / spotty&rdquo / ways. The key findings might be summarised in the form of four assertions:

&ldquo / It is all about people&rdquo /

Philosophical differences are significant

Context and history cannot be ignored

The role of the university library is ambiguous.

It is hoped that the study of fledgling IR projects might provide insights useful to the broader IR research and professional literature.
