Integration of Advanced Optics for Trapped Ion Quantum Information Processing

Noek, Rachel January 2013 (has links)

Trapped ion systems are the leading candidate for quantum information processing because many of the critical components have already been demonstrated. Scaling trapped ion systems to large numbers of ions is currently believed possible, but much work remains to prove it. Microfabricated surface ion traps are increasing in popularity for their ease of mass production and their ability to manipulate individual ions and interact arbitrary pairs of ions. Even with the advent of scalable ion traps, detection of an individual ion trapped in a high vacuum poses a challenge. The internal state of the ion chosen for a quantum bit can be measured via exposure to a probe beam that causes one state to scatter light (a "bright" state), but not the other state (a "dark" state). In free space, a single ion acts like a point source that emits in all directions; a standard two inch lens system can only collect about 2% of the light emitted by the ion. Poor light collection results in a high error rate and slow determination of the internal state of the ion. Fast, high fidelity state detection is necessary for quantum error correction and loophole-free Bell experiments at short (less than 100\,km) distances, and high efficiency collection is necessary to rapidly interconnect separate quantum computers. We demonstrate state detection fidelities of 99%, 99.856(8)% and 99.915(7) % which correspond to detection times of 10.5, 28.1 and 99.8 us, respectively.
/ Dissertation

Hatten, dockan, capen, byrån : ting och tinglighet hos Djuna Barnes

Frödin, Ellen January 2013 (has links)
The inhuman element in Djuna Barnes’s works has been widely acknowledged. So far the research has, however, concerned itself primarily with animality, thus neglecting the importance of things and thingliness in her texts. In this essay I outline a new way of approaching Barnes were things are taken into account as a vital element in her literary world, using theories on prostheses, fetishes and souvenirs. In Nightwood and four of the short stories, ”A Night Among the Horses”, ”Aller et Retour”, ”Cassation”, and ”The Grande Malade”, I examine clothing, interiors, collections, statues and dolls as objects that in different ways harbour meaning, dream, riddle, memory, history, longing and desire. The aim is not at translating these objects; my concern is not so much with what they mean, as how they mean; how they are used and thus how they interact with the characters.

Ukiyo-e and the Canterbury Museum

Lummis, Geraldine Erika January 2011 (has links)
The text investigates the history of the Canterbury Museum’s collection of Japanese ukiyo-e prints and paintings focusing mainly on four major contributors: Sir Joseph Kinsey (1852-1936), Frances May Bailey (c.1891-1967), Greggory Kane (1921-1978) and Ronald J Scarlett (1911-2002). The images are set in the context of the ‘floating world’ (ukiyo). The introduction examines the early directors of the Museum and how their interests and policies influenced the collections. The method of grading the prints and the process by which the data base was formed are explained. Chapter One examines the way New Zealand was influenced by a growing interest in Japan during the early twentieth century, the effects of Japanese activity in the Pacific and the way the collectors responded. It also looks at the local cultural context in which the collectors acquired and exhibited their works. Exhibitions of Japanese and Chinese art occurred in 1935 and 1952 in Christchurch; such events widened the knowledge and aesthetic appreciation of Asian art. Chapter Two considers the subjects, scope, and range of ukiyo-e art and the artists represented in the Museum’s collection. It looks at the condition of the images, how they were made, the formats used, and whether they were printed from original or recut blocks. Japanese Government censorship and works of particular interest are discussed. Comparisons are made with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery’s and Auckland Art Gallery’s collections. Works by major artists including Hiroshige (1797-1858), Hokusai (1760-1849), Eizan (1787-1867), Eishi (1756-1829), Chikanobu (1838-1912), Toyokuni I (1769-1825), Kunisada (1786-1864) and Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) are evaluated. By reconstructing the collections of Japanese art in the Museum, the chapter reveals the collectors’ diverse interests and individual preferences. The research presented in this discussion stems from an extensive study of the 427 images in the collection and is supported by an illustrated database of all the Museum’s ukiyo-e works.

PHOSPHORUS DIGESTIBILITY AND PHYTATE DEGRADATION IN LONG YEARLINGS AND MATURE HORSES

Fowler, Ashley 01 January 2013 (has links)
Much of the phosphorus (P) in grain-based concentrates fed to growing horses is in the form of phytate-P. Little is known about the ability of young horses to degrade phytate-P or whether age affects mineral digestion in horses. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of age on P, calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) digestibility and phytate-P degradation. Four long yearling geldings and 4 mature geldings were fed a diet of alfalfa cubes, timothy cubes and a pelleted concentrate. The diet contained 0.28% total P and 17.4% of that P was in the phytate form. There was a 14-d diet adaptation period followed by a 4-d fecal collection period. There was no difference in apparent P digestibility between the 2 age groups (P > 0.05). Phytate-P disappearance was 94.8% and did not differ between ages (P > 0.05). Apparent Ca digestibility tended to be higher in mature geldings (P = 0.0526), but apparent Mg digestibility did not differ between ages (P > 0.05). Long yearlings have the same ability to digest P and Mg as mature geldings, but more research is needed to determine the effect of age on Ca digestibilities.

Magkänsla mot matematik : Kan mekanisk rekrytering förhindra diskriminering?

Gustafsson, Jennifer January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate if a mechanical recruitment process could be a useful tool for employers to avoid discrimination. National and international law protect jobseekers from discrimination during the recruiting process. Despite this individuals frequently report that they are treated unfairly when they apply for a job. In line with this research shows that some individuals do not have the same opportunities in the labour market as the rest of the population. This study focus on discrimination based on ethnicity, age, gender or disability. Today most of the hiring decisions are based on employers professional judgement. This constitute a potential risk for discrimination since the judgement can be influenced by prejudices and stereotypes. The research shows that employers tend to measure variables which are not relevant for individuals future job performance when they make decisions in selection processes. A mechanical approach for the recruitment can broadly correct for this since it is based on standardized procedures that eliminates human judgement. The data collection of candidates strictly relate to a defined job profile which only contains criterions that are of importance for the employment. Pre-specified algorithms are later on used for combining each candidates data into an overall assessment. This regulates that the same criteria is measured for all individuals. In order to analyse the material a legal dogmatic method has been combined with a legal sociology method.

Between Two Worlds

Tillman, Stephanie 01 May 2015 (has links)
“Original Sin”—evocative and powerful words, but what if they were applied to one of the world’s most popular fairy tales? This thesis explores Snow White in the context of the Seven Deadly Sins and the grand fall of Adam and Eve. The forbidden fruit manifests itself in different ways, pulling the prim and proper princess into places she never could have imagined. But what of the Wicked Queen, here known as Lilith? She too feels the bite of the world’s sick sense of humor, exacting revenge on those who have wronged her. Are these poems about them? Or are they about the author? Perhaps they are both: the innocent children learn quickly of life’s cruelty, handling it with equal parts grace and selfishness. Dive into the minds of Lilith and Snow White as they explore what it means to be themselves in a world that doesn’t care if they end up happy.
