Photographs of works of art, which constitute the empirical object of this research, make possible the existence of a collection of visual information and its consequent institutionalization. Based on this empirical object, we have tried to identify the challenges related to the creation and maintenance of collections of photographs of works of art in an electronic environment, considering the informational needs of specialized users. In order to deal with these challenges, we aimed at doing an exploratory study regarding the particularities of the creation and maintenance of collections of photographs of works of art in an electronic environment. Starting with the review of the existing literature, it was possible to identify beforehand that the problem is not technological indeed, i.e., it is not about the use of the best software, but it lies instead in the process of creation and maintenance of collections of photographs of works of art. In order to understand this process, it was necessary to study the characteristics of the collection of photographs of works of art of the information service of an institution which offers courses in the field of Visual Arts, as well as the informational behaviour of the potential users of this collection. For this case study, the following data collection techniques were used: unstructured direct observation, unstructured interview and a questionnaire. It was possible to observe: the photographs of works of art are used for educational ends, and online databases constitute an appropriate solution to the demand for photographs; users do weekly research for photographs; the kinds of photographs most sought after are those of paintings and drawings; informants use the photographs for research in artistic creation and in theoretical art. Still, for the creation and maintenance of the database, some challenges need to be overcome, such as the definition of criteria regarding the technical characteristics of the photographs and their content, as well as issues of copyright. Among these challenges, the one that stands out concerns the identification of the visual information needs of specialized users, and of how the photographs of works of art will be used in the educational activities. In the case of the institution where this study was conducted, the main request was the inclusion, in its collection, of photographs of works of art produced by the artists of the institution. The study confirmed that users do not want a collection that is nothing but the mirroring of the collections of museums, galleries, or other information services. It was also possible to observe: how important it is to carry out studies about the use and the users of photographs of works of art, on a more regular basis; the adoption of a policy for the selection and development of collections of physical or digital photographs of works of art is indispensable; and, for the creation of an online database, the adoption of metadata standards and the considering of issues of interoperability are essential, but these measures depend on studies and reflections, such as those indicated in this work.

Is Citation Analysis Worth It: A Comparison of the Usefulness of Local Citation Analysis, Interlibrary Loan Records and Usage Statistics for Collection Development Purposes in a Special Library.S. Loree 5 April 2007 (has links)
This study evaluates local citation analysis in comparison to interlibrary loan records and usage statistics as indicators for collection evaluation and development purposes in a special library setting as evidenced through a case study at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Main Library in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. More specifically, it examines how data gathered from these three tools compare as predictors for future trends in use of journals and as tools for developing parameters and guidelines for anticipatory collection development decisions in a scientific research library. Ultimately, citation analysis is the most successful in predicting the following year’s usage.

Science fiction in the public library : essence and selectionBrewis, William Loftie-Eaton 06 1900 (has links)
The selection of science fiction was researched to determine how science fiction should be evaluated and selected in the context of the public library.
The first sub-problem to be researched concerned the cultural, societal and literary origins of this genre, after which its distinct phases of development were studied as well as the characteristic essence of science fiction which would affect its selection per se, specifically whether conventional literary criteria are suitable for the evaluation of items of science fiction during selection.
The next sub-problem focused on, was whether theory can explain the process of fiction selection, The succeeding sub-problem was to empirically Study current practice in science fiction selection. Survey research was conducted amongst selected major urban/regional public library services in the USA.
Final research results indicated that science fiction is a sophisticated, multi-textured genre which differs significantly from fellow popular genres, Science fiction is viewed by some critics as being on the cusp of post-modernism, a significant body of work in contemporary literature, and a supreme expression of late capitalism. Research further showed that no satisfactory evaluative criteria exist. It was also established that theory of fiction selection is not always capable of explaining or guiding the process of fiction selection. There is no model for the selection of science fiction. Finn guiding principles for science fiction selection could be formulated by the aid of this study.
The study concluded with a specially-designed model for the selection of science fiction (including a scorecard with specially-compiled criteria for evaluating items), as well as a suggested core collection. A structured approach should be followed by the science fiction selector. The guiding principles and core collection which were formulated in this study, the set of special criteria as well as the model, together demonstrate that the selection of science fiction can be structured, controlled and guided within established parameters. / Information Science / D. The changing roles, responsibilities and skills of subject and learning support librarians in universities in the Southern African Customs Union Region: guidelines for the establishment of a new serviceChanetsa, Bernadette 02 1900 (has links)
Subject and learning support librarianship first began in African university libraries in the 1960s, but became more prevalent in the 1980s. Subject librarians, who were known by different titles in various universities, were responsible for one or more subjects, departments, schools or faculties, in terms of providing a subject-based information service, and performing subject-based collection development, user education, and liaison functions. They were organised according to specific models or structures which determined whether or not they performed only subject duties in the library. They formed a core part of the university library, and with each major technological advance, they had to reassess their roles, titles, functions, duties, educational qualifications and skills, so as to adapt to the new information environment. Unfortunately, the inception, development, re-assessment and adaptation of subject librarianship on the African continent did not follow a standard path, and no standards guidelines were compiled that could be utilised by new subject services. The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles, responsibilities and skills of subject librarians in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) region. The target population consisted of subject librarians in this region and a census method was used to determine participants. The quantitative research approach employing a survey design was used by the study. Data was collected using questionnaires, and results were clarified by interviews with a selection of library managers. Data was analysed using SPSS, MS-Excel and content analysis. The research found that the main models of subject librarianship in place were the dual and hybrid models. It determined the main titles that subject librarians were known by, and that their role, involved providing teaching, learning and research support to faculty members, staff, students and researchers. It also determined the main functions and related duties performed, and the main educational qualifications and skills held by, or required by subject librarians. Since the study found that no guidelines, specifically targeted at subject librarians in the region, were available, as one of its outcomes it provided guidelines, in the form of an appendix, for new subject services to adapt or adopt if they desired. / Information Science / D. ”Det flytande är ju mer kaotiskt, om man säger så.” : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om flytande bestånd med sju folkbibliotekarier i Göteborgs stad. / “Floating is more chaotic, so to speak.” : A qualitative interview study about floating collections with seven public librarians in the city of Gothenburg.Berg, Beatrice January 2022 (has links)
In 2011 the public libraries of Gothenburg city implemented so-called floating collections. In floating collections the items are not housed permanently at a specific library instead they move between libraries depending on where the item is picked up and left off. Therefore, floating collections are controlled by the library users. Making it a part of a user-centered trend found within Swedish libraries. Literature both praise the benefits with floating as well as highlighting the risks of unpredicted challenges. In the case of Gothenburg city, the public library’s collection management and development has caused debate in the media. Especially the library staff has expressed dissatisfaction. In this thesis seven public librarians have been interviewed about how they perceive working with floating collections, the benefits and drawbacks, as well as the larger effects it has on society. They express certain positives that mainly benefit active and knowledgeable users. One of the greatest drawbacks of flowing collections is the uneven flow between libraries. It leads to stagnated pools of items in some areas and draught in others. The librarians also feel they have been excluded in the process of implementing floating collections as well as during further centralization of the collection management in 2022. The centralization and user centered perspective have decreased the librarian’s control and knowledge of the collection. The data from the interviews has been analyzed in relation to existing literature on floating collections and with the perspective of following theoretical concepts: democratic equality, segregation, periphery and peripheralization. I conclude that the drawbacks of floating collections outweigh the benefits from an equality point of view. The structures of floating collections do not take the full spectrum of library users into consideration, which connects to an uneven flow of items in the city. Items tend to flow from socioeconomic peripheries to socioeconomic centers which increases the peripheralization and segregation of Gothenburg city. The public libraries of Gothenburg need to reconsider their collection management and readjust the structures to create more equal conditions for all users regardless of digital knowledge, age, and other social factors. This includes giving the librarians increased influence over the collections to increase and practice their knowledge. The librarians should also be encouraged to maintain the local perspective at each library while simultaneously seeing to the needs of the city as a whole. The users’ needs could still be the center of the system without being at the expense of the librarian’s ability to influence the collection. Many users are dependent on the librarians to use, affect and be inspired by the collection. This is a two years master's thesis in Library and information science.

The role of inventory control in service quality in a South African academic libraryRetief, Esther 30 June 2005 (has links)
Service quality has always been a tacit assumption within the delivery of academic library services, but since the 1990s demands for accountability from different stakeholders, including the clients, made service quality a highly debated and researched focus in academic libraries all over the world.
The scope of the study covers a wide-ranging analysis of discourses underpinning service quality and its accompanying performance indicators in academic libraries.
Using the academic library of the University of South Africa as an illustrative case study, this study examines the possible impact of inventory control on the service quality of the academic library in three areas, namely access to information resources, retrieval of information resources and positive implications for sound financial management. The study's findings all point to a positive enhancement of service quality in regard to the three areas mentioned. / Information Science / M. Inf.

PRESERVING, INTERPRETING, AND DISPLAYING MENTAL HEALTH HISTORY: ESTABLISHING THE PATTON STATE HOSPITAL MUSEUM AND ARCHIVELong, Shannon Rene 01 June 2015 (has links)
There are few museums in the western half of the United States that provide an opportunity to educate the public about the history of mental health care. Recently, a mental health museum and archive of artifacts, photographs, and documents was established on the grounds of Patton State Hospital in Highland, California. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the establishment of this museum and archive and to provide an account of the 125 year history of Patton State Hospital. Understanding the history of Patton provides an opportunity to understand the history of mental health care in the United States from the late 19th century to the present. The establishment of this museum and archive became a joint initiative between Patton and California State University, San Bernardino’s History Department in January 2014. The museum and archive are meant to provide an educational venue that will increase awareness of the plight of the mentally ill, decrease stigmatization of those afflicted with mental illness, and further efforts to improve the care of patients through preservation and display of the artifacts, photographs, and documents related to Patton’s history. The goal of this paper is to assist future public historians with the design and establishment of a museum and/or archive, be it related to mental health history or to projects with other themes, and to provide information to other mental health facilities that wish to establish their own museums.

Integration of indigenous knowledge into the services of public libraries in South AfricaMhlongo, Maned Annie 01 1900 (has links)
Documented value of indigenous knowledge (IK) in the lives of communities raises the need to facilitate its accessibility. Public libraries in South Africa can play an important role in facilitating access to this knowledge by integrating it into their services. Apart from positively contributing to the quality of lives of indigenous communities, integration of IK would result in the provision of inclusive and transformed library services.
The purpose of this study was to explore how public libraries in South Africa may integrate IK into their services. Located within the critical theory paradigm, a qualitative multiple-case study was conducted among four purposefully selected provincial library services in South Africa. Directors of the selected provincial library services were interviewed. Collection development policies of the selected libraries were also analysed to determine the extent of their alignment with the provision of IK. Atlas.ti. was used to analyse data thematically.
Findings revealed that libraries have not integrated IK into their services. Furthermore, collection development policies were not aligned to the provision of IK. Factors contributing to non-integration of IK in public libraries included the perception that librarians did not seem to regard IK as within their purview but rather an aspect for archival institutions. Non- alignment of policies to IK integration, content that is not accessible to indigenous communities and dwindling funding for library services provision also emerged as contributory factors. It was concluded that the hegemony of western knowledge continued to marginalise IK, possibly contributing to its non-integration.
A framework based on principles of community involvement, inclusivity, access and transformation was recommended for integrating IK into services of public libraries. It was recommended that public librarians, as stakeholders in the transformation of library services need to engage in the IK discourse in order to enhance their ability to provide inclusive services. The importance of involving communities in defining IK according to their contexts to enable meaningful integration into library services was highlighted. A need to expand the study to other provinces in South Africa to determine librarians’ understanding and views regarding integration of IK was identified. / Information Science / D. Litt. et Phil.
