The lion in the frame : the art practices of the national art galleries of New South Wales and New Zealand, 1918-1939

This study examines the art practices and management of the National Art Galleries of Australia and New Zealand in the period between the wars, 1918-1939.It does so in part to account for the pervading conservatism and narrow corridors of aesthetic acceptability evident in their acquisitions and in many of their dealings. It aims to explore the role of Britishness, through an examination of the influence of the London Royal Academy of Art, within theses emerging official art institutions. This study argues that the dominant artistic ideology illustrated in these National Gallery collections was determined by a social elite, which was, at its heart, British. Its collective taste was predicated on models established in Great Britain and on traditions and on connoisseurship. This visual instruction in the British ideal of culture, as seen through the Academy, was regarded as a worthy aspiration, one that was at once both highly nationalistic and also a tool of Empire unity. This ideal was nationalistic in the sense that it marked the desire of these Boards to claim for the nation membership of the world's civil society, whilst also acknowleging that the vehicle to do so was through an enhanced alliance with British art and culture. The ramifications of an Empire-first aesthetic model were tremendous. The model severely constrained taste in domestic art, limited the participation of indigenous peoples and shaped the reception of modernism. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Factors in the establishment of institutional repositories: a case study of the Western Cape Higher Education Institutions

<p>In the academic world, open access institutional repositories (IRs) are beginning to play a vital role in storing and disseminating scholarly communication. Through this method, higher education institutions are able to showcase their intellectual outputs and to contribute to sharing and building knowledge. This evolutionary process of scholarly communication is an important feature of knowledge societies. Furthermore, IRs allow scholars to make known the research they are involved in, which can result in their academic reputation improving, as well as the reputations of the institutions they represent.</p> <p>The purpose of this study is to examine the processes of establishing IRs in the four tertiary education institutions in the Western Cape, which form part of the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC). Within this consortium is the collaborative library project, the Cape Library Consortium (CALICO), which represents the four academic library services. The researcher investigated whether the four Western Cape Higher Education Institutions have established IRs and their experiences in doing so. They are examined in the light of the guidelines for successful IRs already established in the international professional literature on IRs. Throughout the study, the partnerships that are needed for the success of IRs, with a specific emphasis on the crucial role that the librarian might play in this regard, are a central focus.</p> <p>The study is a qualitative case study, relying on interviews with key informants from the four HEIs and analysing policy and other supporting documents. The study confirms comment in the literature that IRs evolve in &ldquo / messy&rdquo / and &ldquo / spotty&rdquo / ways. The key findings might be summarised in the form of four assertions:</p> <ul> <li>&ldquo / It is all about people&rdquo / </li> <li>Philosophical differences are significant</li> <li>Context and history cannot be ignored</li> <li>The role of the university library is ambiguous.</li> </ul> <p>It is hoped that the study of fledgling IR projects might provide insights useful to the broader IR research and professional literature.</p>

Can we fix it? : archiving and analysing 'Bob the Builder' : a resources paradigm and research method

As a practice, archiving preserves and protects information that would otherwise be lost, offering important resources to researchers to interpret, chart and define what the archives represent, allowing the public to reflect on records held within them. Archiving is open to many disciplines, organisations and institutions with distinctions made in the care and organisation of records maintained under these disciplines. In terms of animation, archiving finished films on various formats is an established practice, and researchers interpret those films within their own research, but the animation production materials, used in the creation of the films are not privy to an established form of archival practice. Whilst these archives – or collections of materials do exist, they are archived without any unified, peer reviewed specialist interpretation of the care and organisation of the collections using a taxonomy that reflects the unique aspects of animation production. There is a clear need to establish the archiving of animation production materials as a distinct practice with its own taxonomy and philosophy. Examining the current practices from other forms of archiving that are applied to animation production collections and developing a distinct model of practice from these models can achieve this. Once archiving animation materials is an established practice and data is managed in a way that reflects the acknowledges the distinctive aspects of animation as a form, data and records created from the collections can then be used as empirical evidence to enhance the study of animation. This thesis begins that work by developing and applying a model of practice, using a collection of previously uncatalogued materials to explore the possible ways in which an animation production archive would best be used as primary research material. The collection is used to conduct an investigation into British children's television animation. As a form, animation is often neglected and often lost in semantics as a children's genre and within that neglect is a disregard even within the study of children's programming itself, a body which would claim to take children's televisual content seriously. Even bodies such as the Office of Communications (Ofcom) and the British Audience Research Board (BARB) have no definition of what an animated television show for children is, and yet continues to provide data with this absent definition present in their research. By using a collection of animation materials to create a taxonomy and studying the records created whilst using this taxonomy it is possible to define the form of children's television animation and in doing so prove the use of a collection of animation materials as a model of research and the practice of animation archiving as worthy of its own district identity, philosophy and practice which can continue to be developed for all types of animation.

The purpose of this thesis in Library and Information Science (LIS) is to examine how five Swedish university libraries work with collection management using a critical discourse analysis (CDA). University libraries hold large, valuable and often unique materials in the collections. Making decisions on what to preserve has for centuries been a task that libraries have been relied on to perform. The thesis aims to discuss how the university libraries through policy documents work with collection management and preservation of library materials and if there is a need of a national preservation policy. The method used in this thesis is Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis (CDA) with its three dimensional analytical framework that focuses on the text, the discourse practice and the social practice. The qualitative methods used are interviews and a textanalysis of policy documents. The result of the analysis revealed that the majority of the libraries lack substantial policies in collection management. The focus has instead been on a more user-oriented approach regarding access and acquisition of library materials. A central conclusion is that there is a need of a national collection policy regarding preservation of library collections.

Tal projeto se propôs a digitalizar e disponibilizar os acervos documentais de três entidades de Pelotas, a Colônia de Pescadores Z3, o Clube Cultural Fica Ahí Pra Ir Dizendo e a Sociedade União Democrata. A investigação tem três focos. Primeiramente são observados os temas da Tecnologia da Informação e Comunicação - TICs, da digitalização e gestão de acervos, da cibercultura e, como forma de ter parâmetros para análise do projeto estudado, buscou-se na internet alguns exemplos de ambientes virtuais de acessibilidade a acervos digitais. Em seguida é apresentado o histórico, a conceituação e uma análise da estrutura dos "Pontos de Cultura" em âmbito nacional. Por fim, são apresentados os Pontos de Cultura da RPCMP e seus processos de digitalização de acervos. Compreendemos a gestão de acervos como uma prática dinâmica, transversal e criteriosa que tem por objetivo preservar o patrimônio cultural e a memória das sociedades; e a digitalização de imagens como um instrumento que contribui para a preservação do acervo físico, mas também como uma prática que possibilita a divulgação do arquivo por meio do acesso a ambientes virtuais de disponibilização de acervos digitais. Neste sentido, o trabalho procura analisar os propósitos da RPCMP e os resultados efetivamente obtidos. Por fim, são feitas algumas considerações no sentido de apontar caminhos para o futuro do objeto de estudo. / Starting from the impact of new technologies on contemporary culture and on the public policies of democratization of information, this dissertation seeks to examine the experience of the "Culture Points" developed by the federal government through the Ministry of Culture, particularly the project of Network of Culture Points of the Municipality of Pelotas - RPCMP - developed by the Catholic University of Pelotas. This project aimed to scan and make available the document collections of three entities of Pelotas: Colônia Z3 (a fishermen community), the cultural club Fica Ahí Pra Ir Dizendo and the União Democrata association. The research had three points of focus. Firstly, it observed the themes of the Information and Communication Technology - ICT, of the scanning and management of collections, of cyberculture, and as a way to have parameters for analysis of the project that was studied, some examples of virtual environments of accessibility to digital collections were sought. After that, the history, concept and an analysis of the structure of the "Culture Points" nationwide are presented. Finally, the "Points of Culture" of RPCMP and their processes of collection scanning are presented. We consider the management of collections as a dynamic, transversal and careful practice, which aims to preserve the cultural heritage and the memory of societies; and the scanning of images as a tool that helps to preserve the physical collection, but also as a practice that allows the dissemination of the file by accessing the virtual environments of availability of digital collections. In this sense, this dissertation aims to analyze the purposes of the RPCMP and the results actually obtained. Finally, some considerations to point out ways for the future of the object of study are made.

Going digital? : The work processes with e-books at academic libraries in Sweden

Research regarding e-book management at academic libraries is scarce, especially referring to Swedish university libraries. The work with e-books regarding selection, acquisition, promotion etc. can give insight into the stance towards e-books and their use at Swedish academic libraries. Challenges and problems such as accessibility, licensing as well as DRM restrictions may hinder e-books from becoming worthy complements to printed books. This thesis gives more insight into the acquisition, work and distribution and general working processes with e-books at Swedish academic libraries. A total of eight Swedish university libraries with 13 representatives agreed to participate in semi-structured interviews. The main results are that selection and acquisition of e-books are both influenced by librarians themselves and by user demand, and that e-books are frequently used and sometimes even favored over print books. Complex licensing and DRM restrictions may lead to e-books not being fully appreciated, which is further complicated due to a lack of promotion of e-books by academic libraries. Academic e-books are offered in English due to a lack of Swedish titles. In some situations, print books are acquired, e.g. if electronic titles are not available or too expensive. Both formats have advantages and disadvantages regarding access, availability, usage and preference. While print books are cheaper and offer a tactile experience, e-books can be read by multiple users simultaneously and do not require storage space in contrast to print books.

博物館館藏管理系統之研究:以鴻禧美術館為例 / On Museum Collection Management System

博物館應用資訊科技已有數十年的歷史,其中最為基礎也最為核心的部份就是博物館的館藏管理系統(Collection Management Systems,CMSs)。尤其在資訊社會之中,博物館如何應用資訊科技來傳播知識、提昇自己的地位更是十分重要的議題。因此,博物館界加強對應用資訊科技的研究有相當程度的必要。以我國情形而言,由於沒有以博物館為市場對象的資訊系統廠商,也沒有強有力的合作組織,除了少數大館之外,在館藏管理系統的發展上多半不甚完善。本研究選擇以私立鴻禧美術館為研究對象,針對其館藏管理系統的發展和使用進行訪談,並和國外的美術館館藏管理系統TMS (The Museum System)進行比較分析,了解國內外的差異,並對未來的發展提出建議。 根據訪談結果,發現鴻禧美術館的典藏資料庫是用Microsoft Access改寫而成,在發展和使用上則各有其優缺點。優點是成本低廉、使用容易、維護簡單、符合需求;而缺點則是功能特性不彰、記錄資訊太少、缺少連結和有組織的呈現資訊、對館內業務幫助不大、沒有標準化、沒有網路連線的功能。而TMS則是商業化的資訊系統,已發展到第9版,其功能架構共有九個模組,功能範圍包括物件、人事、媒體、展覽、出借、書目、事件、場址,具有多種易於使用的功能特色,其軟硬體架構也較具標準和彈性,並有完備的支援和諮詢服務,也有支援網路檢索的功能套件。 經由比較的結果,國內中小型博物館的系統和國外系統之差距,主要表現在幾方面:國內中小型美術館的系統功能和設計不符合美術館工作的需求、不注重合作與標準化、未考量使用者的需求、系統分析和管理的觀念不足、未能支援館內其它業務、使用和管理的素養不夠。針對這些問題,分別對博物館學界和中小型美術館提出以下的建議:1.對博物館學界的建議:應盡快研訂採用一致的相關標準、注重博物館資訊系統問題的研究和討論、提高博物館從業人員的資訊知識和素養、加強與其它學科領域的交流與合作、加強博物館界內部在此方面的合作;2.對中小型美術館的建議:重視網路技術的使用、建置系統時資訊的收集和組織應力求完整、加強系統分析與規劃管理的觀念、重視館藏管理系統與館內其它部門業務的整合、視自身的情況來衡量發展系統的策略。而未來的進一步研究議題則有其它類型博物館館藏管理系統的研究、各種資訊組織標準與相關規範之研究、博物館內其它領域應用資訊科技的研究。

Ett Stadsmuseum för alla : En studie av uppsökande museiverksamhet i Stockholms ytterstad / A Museum for Everyone : A Study of Museum Outreach Activities in Stockholm's Suburbs

This study examines a project carried out by Stockholms stadsmuseum in the area of Östberga in Stockholm called Stadsmuseet på plats – Östberga. Interviews with museum personnel and analysis of documents related to the project make up the material for this study. The theory used is The Contextual Model of Learning, which in this study is adjusted to apply a museum-centered perspective rather than a visitor-centered one. The aim is to examine the intentions behind this type of outreach work and how it relates to the concept of the socially responsible museum. This concept is an expression of the development of the museum towards a visitor-centered, democratic and inclusive institution. It also includes a political idea, primarily in a British context, of the museum as a vehicle for positive social change. This study shows that Stadsmuseet på plats – Östberga is connected to larger political goals within the municipality regarding a sustainable social development. The museum’s intentions behind the project combines a regard for the local development of Östberga, with the fulfillment of internal institutional goals relating to audience development, development of museum collections, and creating an inclusive cultural heritage that represents every part of Stockholm. This is a two years master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.
