Transmuting the mundane into transcendence : migrations of myth and its connection to contemporary comic books

Opperman, Susan 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the human capacity of modifying established myth in the light of new circumstances. It focuses on the changing status of myth and mythical cosmologies in Western culture as advances in telematics and techno-culture has led to the abundant proliferation of mythic content in modern society. The rise of scientific, secular and rational tendencies in the Occident has resulted in the demystification and negation of some myths and the cultural realities they once supported. Mythical symbols, however, do exhibit a certain degree of independence from their original set ontologies, growing and transforming continuously within contemporary culture as they are communicated to all social spheres. A particular focus is placed on the demystification of myth and its ability to be appropriated within other discourses, most notably fiction. As such, myth tends to exhibit certain migratory and conservational qualities that this study investigates. This serves as background for this thesis that is primarily located within the broader theoretical argument of myth as a system of world-representation in society, the main point of discussion is the re-appropriation of myth within the narrower field of visual signification, specifically the comics medium, as exemplified in the works of Neil Gaiman and Conrad Botes, as well as in my own work.

Vývoj role a postavení komiksového stripu v českých publicistických (kulturních) časopisech / The evolution of purpose and status of comic strips in czech cultural magazines

Drahoňovská, Tereza January 2015 (has links)
This master's thesis is a study of the comic strip and its tradition in the Czech Republic. It covers development of this format and its occurrence in Czech periodicals as well as the gradual use of comics' visual language and different views on the comic strip definition. Taking views from several different perspectives including artists, writers, magazine editors and publishers this thesis will show the principles of cooperation between the comic creator and the editors of the magazine in which it is published. This is supported by original research (see Appendix) and has the goal of showing the motivations, perceptions and approaches to the comic strip from the perspective of the creator as well as the magazine editor. The research uses case studies based on structured interviews with editors of cultural magazines in the Czech Republic and with the creators of the comic strips that they publish. The results of this research combined with the historical and contemporary context offer a close look into the current perception of the comic strip as a format for creative expression, but also the magazine editor's responsibility in publishing the comic strip.

Překlad komiksu z francouzštiny / Translation of francophone comics

Vyhnalová, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
(in English): The present thesis titled Translation of francophone comics deals with the subject matter of comics translation, while applying both a theoretical and an empirical approach. Particular attention is paid especially to translations from French into Czech. Regarded the fact that Czech science has only scarcely studied the subject so far, the present thesis is conceived as a global introduction to the subject matter with particular focus on some of its partial aspects. The introduction to the theoretical part of the present study defines the main characteristic features of comics as a medium, as these features are closely linked to the particular challenges raised by its translations. The key chapters of the theoretical part go further to the core of the principal subject and focus on setting a general theoretical framework for translation analysis of specific problems linked with comics translations. The most common challenges faced by a comics translator are identified based on the defined characteristics of the Ninth Art and systemized in three main groups defined as technical, cultural and linguistic aspects of translation. While translating comics from French into Czech, the translator's work is also influenced by the radical differences in approaches to the Ninth Art in the Czech...

India Book House und die Comic-Serie Amar Chitra Katha (1970-2002), Eine kulturwissenschaftliche Medienanalyse

Barth, Norbert Victor January 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Nas trilhas do herói. histórias em quadrinhos & itinerários de formação / In the tracks of the hero: comic books & training itineraries

Brésio, Sabrina da Paixão 12 September 2016 (has links)
\"The hero\'s jornney is a sellf-formative path present in ancestral narratives which, going beyond space-time barriers, still echo in contemporary productions without losing its symbolic potential. The missivity: by a tensive grammar semiotics of comics

Tomasi, Carolina 20 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to study the missivity, using as a corpus Luiz Gês Território de bravos comics. The main purpose is to examine emissivity and remissivity as founding elements of a tensive grammar in the narratives present in the comics. Initially, we broach the obstinate passion as constituting the éthos of the enunciator. Once obstinacy reveals the tensive cipher in the continuity of the pause caused by antisubjects tonicity in subjects way, it became relevant to collect emissive and remissive drawings in Gês comics. The conclusion of the survey 75.47% of prevalent remissive drawings has brought us to Zilberbergs missivity theory. This theory supports the analysis undertook in this work and provided the means to us to testify that the missive playing structures comics. We examined in comparative terms two comic stories which go along two diverse ways: one of them in remissive dominance, the other in emissive dominance; we found pertinence in the study of antisubjects function that is, to derange the subject object sequence. This antisubject would account for impelling the narrative way, as well as He impels enunciators obstinate passion. If the antisubject was not present, the subject-object would go to a depletion of the narrative, that is, an absolute harmony. Afterwards, supported by the missivity theory, we could verify the convenience of researching the rhythm and rhetoric in the comics as other tensive factors that originate sense. We still examined the acceleration and deceleration that promote that rhythm in the comics, and this way could establish a comparison between Luiz Gês stories and classic and baroque esthetics. These concepts implied a revision of the rhetoric under a tensive point of view. Thus this work concerns itself with the metaphorical and metonymical tropos here seen in conformity with, respectively, acceleration and deceleration tensive ciphers.

\"Estação das Brumas\": a intertextualidade nas histórias em quadrinhos e a apropriação da informação cultural em Sandman / \"Season of Mists\": the intertextuality in the comic books and the appropriation of the cultural information in Sandman

Souza, Mariane de 01 September 2017 (has links)
In this work, comics are understood as a language that, through the juxtaposition of images, transmit information that produces an answer in the reader. The proposal is to observe the possibilities of appropriation of knowledge and cultural information present in an artifact that shows itself broad in the sense of interpretation and meaning: comic books. The adopted research methodology comprises an interpretative and qualitative approach that involves both verbal and visual text. In the empirical object of this research, The Sandman, of Neil Gaiman, diverse cultural, historical and literary references in the narrative content were perceived. In this way, the cultural appropriations, aesthetic, cinematographic, among others, that are part of the composition of the series, were considerate, observing its intertextual and semiotic aspects. Thus, when we look at the analysis of intertextuality in Sandman, we try to understand how cultural information is articulated in the constitution of a specific field of knowledge, bringing together the most diverse references. This case study aimed to contribute to the Information Science through a reflection on how the mediations of reading are constituted through the identification of the intertextual layers present in the work, the social processes of knowledge construction and the assembly of \"encyclopedias\" Of readers in today\'s information society.

Resolução de conflitos interpessoais e as histórias em quadrinhos: uma possibilidade de interlocução / Interpersonal conflict resolution and comic novels: a possibility of interlocution

Lagareiro, Andréa Corrêa 21 August 2018 (has links)
The object of study of this research concerns interpersonal conflicts faced by the lead character of the comic novel Miss Marvel: No Normal (Wilson & Alphona, 2014) and was motivated by alarming data from the World Health Organization, the Survey on Juvenile Violence against Women in Brazil and the constant questioning by the public of the media influence in violence processes. The aim of the research was to observe how the female figure of the lead character of the comic novel is represented, as well as how the conflicts are approached, analyzing eliciting situations, affections, strategies for resolution, outcomes and, consequently, the cognitive processing and the conflict assessment. It was also the object of the research to pose questions and contribute to the debate as to how women are represented in their choices of strategies of interpersonal conflict resolution. As to the method, a documental research of the comic novel at issue was carried out, observing the female representation of the lead character in her conflicts, categorizing her resolution strategies and analyzing them in light of intercultural psychology perspectives. The results point to a considerable number of submissive strategies, as well as to a larger presence of assertive strategies to the detriment of aggressive strategies, in addition to the gender influence on resolution styles. It was possible to conclude that such results are aligned with the ones acknowledged in field researches that identify such trend for interpersonal conflict resolution among female youth. It is necessary to carry out an empirical research on the use of comic novels as an instrument to discuss conflict resolution styles, in more assertive manners and that aim at the maintenance of relations, and yet the promotion of the denaturalization of violence against women
