Análise de um corpus de textos de segurança da aviação à luz dos Estudos da Tradução Baseados em Corpus: os termos \'segurança\', \'safety\' e \'security\' / Analysis of a corpus of texts of safety and security in aviation under the view of Corpus-Based Translation Studies: terms segurança, safety and security

Carlos Eduardo Piazentine Costa 21 June 2017 (has links)
Translation language carries out certain trends and characteristics in its own nature. The present study aims at observing the term segurança in Portuguese and its two main translations into English safety and security in aviation language. The theories and methodologies used are those of Corpus-based Translation Studies (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996) and Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2000, 2004; TOGNINI-BONELLI, 2001). The three terms were related and we pointed out their similarities, generalities and peculiarities. For compiling the main corpus we used Brazilian journals in the aviation field (Conexão Sipaer, 2009; Aviation in Focus, 2006). For the comparable corpora, we used aviation texts originally in Portuguese (National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil; Brazilian Air Force) and texts originally in English (International Civil Aviation Organization). This study used the software WordSmith Tools version 6.0 and the tools WordList, KeyWords and Concord. The tranlated texts showed characteristics of explicitation, simplification and normalisation. The types of corpora we used leaded to a reflection over the characteristics of translation language as well as they allowed us to obtain evidence and relate uses of the analysed terms. The comparable corpora gave out the main fixed and semifixed expressions originated from the simple terms in Portuguese and English which are presented through lists followed by their contexts. The results contribute to a better understanding of the terms in aviation language and are expected to be usefull as evidence to translators and professionals in this field and theme.

El inglés de las telecomunicaciones: estudio léxico basado en un corpus específico

Rea Rizzo, María del Camino 11 April 2008 (has links)
A corpus-based method has been developed to facilitate the semi-automatic detection of specialized vocabulary, by combining qualitative and quantitative criteria in relation to the variables of frequency, distribution, restriction and representativiness of a lexical unit in a specialized domain. The specific corpus designed and compiled for research purposes covers the academic and professional written English of Telecommunication Engineering (5.5 millions words). The obtained lexical repertoire is a list of the statistically most significant and representative specialized forms within a range of different degrees of specialization. There are both highly technical terms restricted to the domain and lexical units from the general, academic and other subject areas language, which activate a specialized meaning in telecommunications. The lexical characterization is completed with the study of sintagmatic relations by exploring adjacent collocates, significant collocates, specialized combinations and clusters.

以語料庫為本之近似詞教學成效之研究:以台灣大學生為例 / The Effect of Teaching Near-synonyms to Taiwan EFL University Students: A Corpus-based Approach

陳聖其, Chen, Sheng Chi Unknown Date (has links)
關鍵字:資料觀察學習法、近似詞、語料庫為本 / Corpus Linguistics has progressively become the center in different domains of language research. With such development of large corpora, the potential applications and possibilities of corpora in second language teaching and learning are extended. A discovery-based authentic learning environment is provided as well as created by such corpus-based language learning. Synonym or near-synonym learning is a difficult aspect of vocabulary learning, but a linguistic phenomenon with ubiquity. Hence, this research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the application of data-driven learning (DDL) approach in near-synonyms instruction and compare the teaching effect on the high and low achievers through the near-synonyms instruction. Participants of this study were given instruction throughout the eight-week corpus-based teaching with materials compiled by the teacher. This is a quasi-experimental study consisting of comparison between two experimental conditions, with a pre-post test and control-experimental group design, followed by qualitative method of semi-structure interviews and questionnaire provided to the experimental group of EFL university students in Taiwan. Two intact classes of 86 college students participated in this study. The quantitative analysis of the pre- and posttest scores and questionnaire were conducted through descriptive statistics and frequency analysis in order to explain the learning effects and learners’ perceptions. The results of the study revealed that: (1) participants in the experimental group made significant improvement in the posttest; (2) EFL high proficiency learners with DDL approach performed better than high achievers who were taught by the traditional method. However, low achievers may not be able to benefit from DDL approach in the form of concordance teaching materials; (3) the majority of the participants had positive feedback on DDL activities. Also, types of preferred DDL activities were strongly influenced by students’ proficiency level. Low achievers preferred activities that should involve Chinese translation as the supplementary note while as for the high achievers, they were looking for the teacher’s explanation of words’ usages and functions in the end. This study demonstrates the importance in illuminating the dynamic relationship between DDL approach and second language near-synonyms learning, as well as provides English EFL teachers with a better concept to incorporate corpus or concordance lines into vocabulary instruction. Key words: data-driven Learning, near-synonym, corpus-based approach

Die gebruik van metadiskoers in Afrikaans T1-skryfwerk van eerstejaar-universiteitstudente / A. Jordaan

Jordaan, Adéle January 2014 (has links)
Students’ argumentative writing is substandard in the sense that the necessary relations, amongst other things, are not indicated in their texts. These texts also often lack an author’s voice. In a module such as academic literacy, it is important to pay attention to the means in which these particular problems can be solved. Part of the aims of a course in academic literacy is to equip students with the necessary academic literacy abilities (which include reading and writing ability) and in doing so, teach them to function properly in a tertiary discourse community. In this study, only the written component of academic literacy will be considered. Following the above mentioned problems, the focus will be specifically on items of metadiscourse, which may form part of a possible solution to improve students’ writing. Hyland (2004) distinguishes between two main categories of metadiscourse, namely the interactive and the interactional categories (which each consists of five subcategories). The aim of these categories is to guide the reader through the text in a specific way, and also to actively involve the reader with the textual content and the reading process. If these aspects of metadiscourse are applied effectively, the text may be more cohesive and coherent and a stronger reader-writer-relationship may be established. A corpus-linguistic approach has been followed in the investigation of the frequency of the occurrence of the subcategories of metadiscourse, as well as the functional suitability thereof. The data analysis is based on Hyland’s (2004) analytical framework of metadiscourse categories, which has been adapted according to the data that has been processed with WordSmith Tools (version 6.0). In this study, the focus group is Afrikaans L1 first-year students at the North-West University’s Vaal Triangle Campus in the year 2010. All 109 participants in the study were registered for AGLA111 (Introduction to Academic Literacy) and AGLA121 (Academic Literacy). The texts that were gathered from AGLA111 are represented in corpus 1 whereas the texts gathered from AGLA121 are represented in corpus 2. The data that was provided by these two corpora was measured against an honours corpus (consisting of 39 texts), which served as the norm for this study. The data interpretation can be divided into four categories, namely phenomena that show a statistically significant change in the correct direction, phenomena that were correct from the start and did not show any change between corpus 1 and corpus 2, phenomena that did not show any change between corpus 1 and corpus 2 but that differed from the honours corpus, as well as phenomena that show incorrect development. Recommendations, which have been based on the literature review and text analysis, are made with regard to specific aspects relating to metadiscourse and the teaching of academic literacy modules (on which this study is founded). These recommendations primarily focus on how students’ attention can be focused on the requirements proposed for writing an argumentative text. / MA (Afrikaans en Nederlands), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2014

Dra. Os resultados encontrados nesta pesquisa mostram que a tradutora Irene Matthews tende a usar estratégias que podem ser identificadas como características de normalização / Abstract: This thesis aims at analyzing the translation of words considered recurring and preferred in the novel As mulheres de Tijucopapo, by Marilene Felinto, as well as observing possible tendencies of normalization by the translator Irene Matthews in the translation to English: The women of Tijucopapo. This research is part of a bigger project, the PETra (Padrões de Estilo de Tradutores), coordinated by Doc. Diva Cardoso de Camargo. The methodology employed is that of corpus-based translation studies (proposed by Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2004; Scott's study concerning normalization, 1998; and Camargo's research studies, 2005, 2007), and that of corpus linguistics (Berber Sardinha's study, 2003, 2004). We also base our study on Felinto's critical heritage (studies by Araújo, 2006; Bailey, 2010; Fiorucci, 2009; Gonçalves, 2001; Jacomel, 2008; Santos, 2005; Schmidt, 2009; Vieira, 2001; Wanderley, 2009, and Xavier, 2003). The research was carried out by means of a combination of semi- manual and computerized analyses. Initially, we used the computer software WordSmith Tools to obtain the frequency of the words in Felinto's book. Then, we went on to use the tool KeyWords to identify which would be the keywords in the author's novel. After collecting these data, we used Felinto's critical heritage in order to select five words that could be considered as recurring and preferred in Felinto's writing: 'homem' ('man‟), 'mulheres' ('women)', 'chuva' ('rain'), 'amor' ('love') and 'égua' ('mare'). Based on Scott (1998), we analyzed the translation of the five selected words in relation to nine normalization features. The results obtained in this study show that the translator Irene Matthews tends to use strategies that may be identified as features of normalization / Mestre

The objective of this study was to analyze the maintenance of humor in the media text, starting from the compilation and analysis of a parallel corpus of English subtitles and their translations into Portuguese, from the episodes of three seasons of each sitcoms: Seinfeld, Friends and The Simpsons. We analyze the elements that could contribute to trigger the humor in the sitcoms, searching if the occurrences of humor would be recurring to the different types of sitcoms. We based our research in the studies of humor developed by Raskin (1979, 1985), Attardo and Raskin (1991), Attardo (1994, 2002, 2008) and Vandaele (1999b, 2010); the studies of Audiovisual Humour Translation made by Gottlieb (1992, 2001, 2005), Martinez-Sierra (2003, 2004), Carvalho (2005), Díaz-Cintas and Sánchez (2006), Díaz-Cintas and Remael (2007) and Veiga (2006, 2009). / The present study aims at observing the most frequent medical terms in Portuguese and their translation into English from three medical fields, Anesthesiology, Cardiology and Orthopaedics, as well as examining aspects of simplification and explicitation shown in the respective translator's texts from each medical area. For compiling the main corpus, we used scientific papers from bilingual Brazilian journals and foreign journals well-known in their respective medical fields. This study used three tools: WordList, KeyWords and Concord, from the software WordSmith Tools version 3.0. A comparison of medical terms was carried out based on a parallel corpus of original and translated texts, and on two comparable corpora composed by texts originally written in Portuguese and in English. After listing and analyzing the most frequent medical terms in Portuguese, we compiled a glossary with the respective equivalents in English followed by their contexts in both languages for each of the three medical areas. The observation of simplification and explicitation features revealed strategies used by the three translators when dealing with medical texts.

The present study aims at observing features of sworn translation in the English.Portuguese direction, concerning similarities and differences in the use of the most frequent simple terms, fixed and semi-fixed expressions present in sales contracts analyzed. This study has its theoretical basis on Corpus-Based Translation Studies, on Corpus Linguistics and on some theoretical concepts in Terminology. Our corpora of study comprise 34 sales contracts, translated by two sworn translators. We also compiled two comparable corpora of sales contract: one originally written in Portuguese and another in English. We used three tools of the software WordSmith Tool 4.0 in order to extract data: WordList, KeyWord and Concord. Based on the lexicon found in sales contracts corpora, we built a glossary of simple terms, fixed and semi-fixed expressions. Although the simple terms were present in the dictionaries of our support corpus, there is no information concerning their use. Regarding fixed and semifixed expressions most of them were not found in these dictionaries. The Portuguese comparable corpus showed approximately 70% of fixed and semi-fixed expressions. Also, descriptions about features of sworn translation, its legal aspects, and the text layout can be useful to the learner translator. The occurrence of literal translation, reveals a tendency to use a language closer to the style of sales contracts originally written in English. In addition, we observed a tendency to translate errors in clause numbers as well as imprecise adjectives and adverbs. Another important feature observed is the use of less lexical variation, which is confirmed by the standardized type/token ratio difference (2,29) in relation to the comparable corpus in Portuguese. This result also indicates that in the sworn translations studied, there is a tendency to use more repetition of words than in the analyzed sales contracts originally written in Portuguese.

This research is part of a bigger project, the PETra (Padrões de Estilos de Tradutores), coordinated by Prof. Doc. Diva Cardoso de Camargo. The present research has as one of its objectives to observe the behaviour of different translators when faced with similar (re)utilized textual fragments extracted from two books written by Clarice Lispector, A Descoberta do Mundo, translated into English by Giovanni Pontiero as Discovering the World and Uma Aprendizagem ou O Livro dos Prazeres, translated into English by Richard A. Mazzara and Lorri A. Parris as An Apprenticeship or The Book of Delights. Another objective in this study is to identify aspects of normalization found in the respective translations of these fragments. The methodology employed is that of corpus-based translation studies (proposed by Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, in press; Scott's study concerning normalization, 1998; and Camargo's research studies and research project, 2003a, 2003b, 2004), and that of corpus linguistics (Berber Sardinha's studies, 2003, 2004); as well as on Lispector's critical heritage (studies by Gotlib, 1993; Nunes, B., 1995; Ruggero, 2000; Sá, O., 2000; Varin, 2002; and Cherem, 2003). The research was carried out by means of a combination of semi-manual and computerized analyses. Initially, we used Lispector's critical heritage in order to select five words which are considered to be preferred and recurring in Lispector's writing: life, death, love, silence and eyes. We went on to use the computer software WordSmith Tools to verify whether the five Lispector's preferred words were recurring and meaningful under the perspective of corpus linguistics. Based on Scott (1998), we analyzed the translation of the five selected words in relation to nine normalization features. The final results obtained in this study show that, in comparison with the individual translator... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below)

The present study aimed at investigating the work An Invincible Memory, which contains a great amount of cultural markers, in order to analyse the choices of the selftranslator, João Ubaldo Ribeiro, who transfers and transforms these cultural markers to the context of the translated text. This study also intends to identify possible normalization features. Our investigation is based on Camargo's interdisciplinary proposal (2004, 2005), which involves Baker's corpus-based translation studies (1993, 1995, 1996, 2004), and Berber Sardinha's corpus linguistics studies. Our work also includes Nida's (1945) and Aubert's (1981) works on cultural domains, Aubert's proposal (1984, 1998) for translation modalities, and Baker's (1996) and Scott's (1998) works on normalization features. The obtained results showed that great part of cultural markers can be classified as the material cultural domain, with 43%, followed by the social cultural domain, with 29%, the ideological cultural domain, with 15%, the ecological cultural domain, with 13%. The cultural domains point out the context of the source text. It was also possible to observe that normalization features tend to reveal, conscious or unconscious, the use of fluency strategies by the selftranslator, trying to make the translated text easier to read.
