Alois Hába - Slavko Osterc: Briefwechsel 1931 - 1940

Reittererová, Vlasta, Reitterer, Hubert 04 August 2017 (has links)

The correspondence between Josip Slavenski and Ludwig Strecker

Milin, Melita 04 August 2017 (has links)
The letter-exchange between Josip Slavenski and Ludwig Strecker, one of the directors and owners of the renowned publishing house 'Schott's Söhne' in Mainz throws light not only on one specific case of the efforts of a composer coming from the European periphery to achieve international recognition, but also on the relations between composers and their publishers in the period between two world wars. This correspondence also reflects the effects that major political events - the most important at the time in Europe being the rise of national-socialism - had on the sphere of culture and music in particular.

Models and Graphics in the Analysis of Categorical Variables: The Case of the Youth Tobacco Survey.

Hosler, Deborah Susan 16 August 2002 (has links) (PDF)
Youth Tobacco Surveys have been conducted in several states in the U.S. in recent years, in order to design policies with the goal of reducing tobacco use among young people. Some primary analysis of those surveys has been done, but few analyses include modeling, and the study of independence has been addressed, mainly, in the bivariate context. In this work contemporary methods, which are of relative recent appearance in categorical data analysis, will be examined, including logistic and log-linear modeling as well as graphical displays and correspondence analysis. These methods will be applied to data from the 2000 Tennessee Youth Tobacco Survey. The objective is to demonstrate that methods of multivariate categorical data analysis can provide fresh insight about the behavior of adolescents with respect to tobacco use. The ultimate purpose of this work is to recommend methodology that goes beyond that which is currently published.

Austro-American Reflections: Making the Writings of Ann Tizia Leitich Accessible to English-Speaking Audiences

Simon, Stephen Andrew 12 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Ann Tizia Leitich wrote about America to a Viennese audience as a foreign correspondent with the unique and personal perspective of an immigrant to the United States. Leitich differentiates herself from other Europeans who reported on America in her day by telling of the life of the average working American. In so doing, Leitich uses her work as a foreign correspondent to create a new identity for Austria between the World Wars. Leitich uses America in the 1920's and 1930's as a cultural mirror in which the new Republic of Austria can see itself. Leitich's perspective of America is not only useful to the German-speaking audiences of her time, but also sheds light on America in the interwar period to readers of all backgrounds. Unfortunately, the influence of Leitich's journalism is currently limited to German-speaking audiences. Included are 31 translations of Leitich's articles for the benefit of English-speaking audiences to assist in further analysis of implications of her work.

Why we need a token-based typology: A case study of analytic and lexical causatives in fifteen European languages

Levshina, Natalia 26 January 2023 (has links)
This paper investigates variation of lexical and analytic causatives in 15 European languages from the Germanic, Romance, and Slavic genera based on a multilingual parallel corpus of film subtitles. Using typological parameters of variation of causatives from the literature, this study tests which parameters are relevant for the choice between analytic and lexical causatives in the sample of languages. The main research question is whether the variation is constrained by one semantic dimension, namely, the conceptual integration of the causing and caused events, as suggested by previous research on iconicity in language, or whether several different semantic and syntactic factors are at play. To answer this question, I use an exploratory multivariate technique for categorical data (Multiple Correspondence Analysis with supplementary points) and conditional random forests, a nonparametric regression and classification method. The study demonstrates the importance of corpus data in testing typological hypotheses.

The black hole information paradox and holography

Mola Bertran, Ona January 2023 (has links)
Hawking theorized in 1974 that black holes emit particles as a quantum effect. It follows from this fact that a black hole that emits particles while absorbing none ends up evaporating. The process of black hole evaporation studied from semiclassical gravity violates quantum mechanics leading to serious problems. This is the black hole information paradox, one of the most famous paradoxes in theoretical physics first pointed out by Hawking in 1975 and still unsolved today. Nowadays the widespread interpretation is that quantum mechanics cannot be violated and that the semiclassical gravity approach is not good enough. We need to go beyond semiclassical physics to understand this process. The paradox as originally stated by Hawking is that a pure state evolves into a mixed state, violating unitarity and losing information in the process. There is also an alternative way to state the paradox using the so-called Page curve, which involves working with entropies rather than states. In a unitary process, the entanglement entropy of the radiation will follow the Page curve. In 2019, it was shown explicitly using holographic tools that an evaporating black hole in an Anti-de Sitter spacetime follows the Page curve. Holography is a property of quantum gravity stating that a spatial region can be described by its area rather than its volume. These recent developments also involve the famous island rule as the formula that reproduces the Page curve. This master thesis reviews the current understanding of the paradox, exploring the original paradox as well as the recent developments in the field.

The twisted story of worldsheet scattering on deformed AdS

Zimmermann, Yannik 23 February 2024 (has links)
We study the perturbative quantum theory of various integrable Yang-Baxter deformations of the free superstring on AdS spaces. For this we compute the two-body tree-level scattering matrix on the worldsheet using Feynman diagram methods. The various deformations are: (1) All distinct Abelian deformations of AdS₅ ⨉ S⁵ allowing light-cone gauge fixing. These are dual to noncommutative super Yang-Mills theory and equivalently described through TsT transformations or twisted boundary conditions. We compute the bosonic tree-level scattering matrix for the BMN string in uniform light-cone gauge. The scattering matrix is expressed through a Drinfeld twist for most cases; for some cases it is expressed instead through a shifted momentum dependence. Lastly, we compare the Bethe equations derived from these results to the equations of the model with twisted boundary conditions and find perfect agreement. For deformations of the GKP string we are not able to determine a deformed scattering matrix around the null-cusp solution due to actions incompatible with perturbation theory in momentum space. (2) The inhomogeneous or eta deformation of AdS₅ ⨉ S⁵ corresponding to the fermionic Dynkin diagram. We compute the two-body tree-level scattering matrix up to second order in fermions in uniform light-cone gauge. It satisfies the classical Yang-Baxter equation, factorizes into two blocks and matches the exact scattering matrix for a model with trigonometrically quantum-deformed symmetry. (3) Inhomogeneous bi-Yang-Baxter deformations of AdS₃ ⨉ S³ ⨉ T⁴ for multiple Dynkin diagrams. We compute the two-body tree-level scattering matrix up to second order in fermions in uniform light-cone gauge. All deformations give the same scattering matrix, which matches the expected exact scattering matrix with trigonometrically quantum-deformed symmetry.
