Forgiveness as the Focus Theme in Group Counseling

Schmidt, Mellis I. (Mellis Irene) 12 1900 (has links)
This study reviewed the literature regarding forgiveness and developed a structured group counseling format with the theme of forgiveness. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of forgiveness as used in group counseling upon depression, generalized anxiety, dogmatism, relationships, guilt, and forgiveness in the participants. Thirty subjects were selected to participate in one of three groups: an experimental group, a comparison treatment group, and a control group. The experimental group and the comparison treatment group participated in two-hour group sessions, once a week for ten weeks. The experimental group was didactic and experiential with the focus on forgiveness, whereas the comparison treatment group was problem solving using Redecision Therapy. All groups participated in pre and post test sessions. The seven hypotheses in this study were tested with a multivariate analysis of covariance as well as univariate analysis of covariance for each hypothesis. Significance in differences between means was tested at the .05 level of significance.

Influences of Stated Counselor Religious Values on Subjects' Preference for a Counselor

Wyatt, Steven C. (Steven Charles) 05 1900 (has links)
The effects of the counselor's religious values on the counseling process has been a focal point recently in the literature on counseling and psychotherapy, especially with regard to how the counselor's announced values might effect potential clients' selection of a counselor. In the present study, the investigator addressed this issue in a study with 125 male and 125 female undergraduate students assigned to five different groups in which they read a script that differed with respect to the counselor's religious orientation. The content of the five scripts ranged from no mention of religious values to describing in detail the specific religious values of the counselor. Subjects' responses to the scripts were measured by having them rate (1) the degree of similarity in their own values and the announced values of the therapist; (2) their rating of how helpful they thought the therapist would be with their problem; and, (3) their stated willingness to see the counselor. Results indicated that subjects who read the script describing an agnostic counselor saw a significant degree of dissimilarity between their own and the counselor's values, but this did not affect subjects' perceptions of the counselor's helpfulness or their willingness to see the counselor. Differences in the degree of religiosity between subjects and sex differences observed were discussed as were implications for future research.

Sex-Role Stereotyping in Marital Counseling Sex- Role Style and Type of Problem Effects on Clinical Judgments

Woodruff, James Graham 05 1900 (has links)
The analogue study was designed to extend previous research on clinical sex-role stereotyping of individual clients into the realm of marital counseling. The effects of clinician and couple sex-role style and type of marital problem on clinical judgements of couples was examined through ratings of four audiotaped couples constructed from two scripts depicting either couple financial or sexual problems. Each script produced both a stereotypical and counterstereotypical sex-role styled couple through reversal of spouse verbalizations. A sample of 40 (32 male, 8 female) practicing doctorate-level psychologists rated either two stereotypical or two counterstereotypical couples for level of maladjustment, need for treatment, and prognosis. Individual spouse ratings were also obtained to examine client gender effects.

Assessment of counselling skills among the clergy : a study of the Roman Catholic priest in the diocese of Masvingo in Zimbabwe

Nyandoro, Rudolf 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to assess counselling skills among the Roman Catholic priests in Masvingo diocese- Zimbabwe. This research took place because the priests encountered challenging situations that called for pastoral counselling skills. The research examined and assessed the competence of the clergy. To carry out this research, a survey of 40 priests and 50 parishioners was undertaken. The methods used to collect data were the questionnaire and unstructured interviews. The research structure began with the general introduction, followed by several themes discussed in relation to the literature on counselling in general, pastoral counselling skills and Christian reaction. After analysing the findings, there was confirmation that there was some lack of counselling skills among the clergy. In conclusion, the study recommended a thorough training and supervision in pastoral counselling. This includes the engagement of experts in psychological and pastoral counselling skills. / Practical Theology / M.Th. Practical Theology

Studie- och yrkesvägledares berättelser kring vägledning med NPF-diagnostiserade gymnasieelever / Guidance counselors' stories regarding couseling Swedish high school students diagnosed with Neurodevelopmental disorders

Hansson, Sandra, Blomkvist, Madeleine January 2021 (has links)

Abstract: The characterization of clients is an important step in the evaluation of services offered by campus counseling and mental health centers and in their further planning and development. The objectives of the present study were to describe reported demographics, academic and complaint of students (undergraduate and graduate) who sought counseling/mental health care at a Brazilian campus (Unicamp) mental health service (Serviço de Asssistência Psicológica e Psiquiátrica ao Estudante - Sappe) over 17 years (march/1987 - march/2004). Compare such characteristics to those of the overall university student body. Methods: Participants were all 2.496 students who sought counseling/mental health care at SAPPE. Information was obtained from client's clinical chart. Unicamp's data base was consulted for information about overall university students. Results: Findings indicated an overrepresentation, among clients, of undergraduates, female students, students from Brazilian states other than Sao Paulo, students living in the campus residence hall and those whose main source of income was a scholarship grant. We also found an overrepresentation of Humanities and Arts student-clients. The most frequently reported complaints were: difficulties in interpersonal relationships, family conflicts and poor academic performance. Conclusion: Course level (undergraduate or graduate), study field, living in a university residential facility and reliance on a scholarship grant were found to influence the mental health seeking behavior of Brazilian university students in this study. Course level was found to influence the pattern of complaints reported at first contact with the mental health service. / Mestrado / Saude Mental / Mestre em Ciências Médicas

Perceptions of the role of church-based programmes in addressing HIV and AIDS : a study in the Durban inner-city area

Cele, Mfiseleni Sylvester 10 1900 (has links)
A structured questionnaire was used to survey the perceptions of programme coordinators, fieldworkers and beneficiaries of the role of church-based programmes in addressing HIV and AIDS in the inner-city of Durban. One hundred and ninety two respondents were recruited from seventeen churches. Findings indicate that fear of HIV- and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination abound. The material and spiritual roles of church-based programmes in addressing the needs of people infected with HIV and affected by HIV and AIDS were stressed by the respondents. Whereas programme coordinators were well informed about HIV and AIDS, information that can dispel fears about stigma and correct myths about HIV-transmission should be tailored to reach ordinary men and women. It is recommended that further research be conducted on the preventive aspects of church-based programmes in the Durban inner-city. / Sociology / M.A. (Social Behaviour Studies in HIV/AIDS)
