An exploratory study of the psychology of forgiveness: an interpersonal perspective

Kotzé, Hilda Norma 30 November 2006 (has links)
This qualitative study explores the meaning of interpersonal forgiveness, using a both/and or postmodern epistemology and a phenomenological methodology. Forgiveness is seen as a reframe that could transform a limiting, disempowering dominant narrative into a more empowering and useful story. The researcher interviews three participants to co-create stories of forgiveness. Themes of emotional discomfort; blame and responsibility; shift to empathy; forgiveness as process; and lasting change or forgiveness incorporated into way of life, are identified. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

The role of the ward manager in creating a conducive clinical learning environment for nursing students

Netshandama-Funyufunyu, Vhonani Olive 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the ward manager in creating a conducive clinical learning environment for nursing students. An explorative descriptive research method was employed. Findings reveal that the ward managers are generally satisfied with the way in which they handled the important role they play in facilitating teaching and learning for nursing students. They feel strongly, however, that the nursing students themselves need to be active in the learning process. While acknowledging the efforts of the ward managers in creating and maintaining the learning environment, nursing students were dissatisfied about several aspects that appeared to be lacking in the clinical environment, such as good interpersonal relations, support, exposure to practice administrative skills (for example, problem-solving and decision-making) and lack of feedback about their performance. There appears to be a need to develop more effective support structures within the learning environment so that nursing students can obtain sufficient exposure to learning opportunities. / Health Studies / M.A. (Advanced Nursing Sciences)

Varför går företag i konkurs? : Företagsledares förklaringar ur ett meningsskapandeperspektiv

Alfvegren, Adam, Bäckman, Emil, Eidemar, Pontus January 2013 (has links)
This paper is about sensemaking. By using sensemaking we have derived bankruptcy factors from business leaders’ own statements about their bankruptcies. The focus in this paper is to ensure how business leaders create meaning about the bankruptcies, which is also our research question. To make the study feasible, we used a method that corresponds well to the purpose of our work. The collection of data started with collecting a number of newspaper articles with direct quotes from business leaders. These quotes were, through a model that structures and categorizes empirical datum, aggregated into bankruptcy factors. The factors were then explained with regards to the business leaders’ statements. The factors are also compared with previous studies of bankruptcy factors. Those studies use different approaches then ours, in deriving and explaining their bankruptcies. With regards to that, we found it interesting to analyze similarities and differences in results. The study has shown five bankruptcy factors. These are customer losses, financing, external circumstances, profitability and planning. They are described by a number of underlying causes. The factors we found have shown both similarities and differences with regards to the previous studies.

En studie om informationskultur, informationsdelning och värdeskapande inom kommunala fastighetsbolag

Hammarström, Madeleine January 2020 (has links)
Information is a commodity that is increasing in value. It is a new way of competing and companies are forces to use information as a strategic goal. An information management strategy contains thoughts and ideas abouts the company´s information culture. Previous research on information management has on one hand focused on hard values such as policys, routines and systems and one the other hand on soft values such as behaviour and norms, power and sharing of information. The purpose of this study is to explore information culture from four different cultural perspectives; relationship, rule, risk and result to deepen understandring of social and cultural aspect of municipal property companies in Sweden. The municipal property companies own and manage 860 000 apartments and turnover SEK 72 billion (2018). If these companies can create more value from their information, there is a great opportunity to generate positive economic effects for all of Sweden’s municipalities and for its inhabitants. The study was conducted using a quantative method and empirics were collected through a web-based survey. The results show that there are only minor cultural differences between the companies and that the relationship-oriented culture is the least represented among all companies. There is potential for improvment for these companies to focus on relationship-based culture. If relationships are given more space within the companies, there is opportunities that this is return will lead to the companies having better information sharing.

Creating a safety lighting zone on the subway platformUsing light as an information giver

Rasheed, Morad January 2019 (has links)
Stockholm’s subway system is considered one of the longest art galleries in the world. Each station has its own identity, but at the same time, all metro stations have the sameuniform functional light approach. This light could not prevent the passengers from gathering and walking randomlyat the subway station’s platform. Moreover, the uniform light is neglecting the artwork onthe station’s platform; hence, this could lead to losing the identity feature of the station. Ingeneral, the demand for using public transportation in sustainable urban cities is increasing. This thesis studies how to use light as an information giver for the passengers on the subwaystation platform:By creating light safety zones and by enhancing the wayfinding to minimize conflict points. From the result of the questionnaire and the observations in two case studies, adesign principle with eight parameters has been developed to be applied in new lightingdesign for the T-Centralen platform station. It aims to restore the identity of the station, and create different zones at the T-Centralen subway platform, to enhance the movementof the passengers and to make it more organized by combining different layers of functional, atmospheric and dynamic light.

Geology of the North Fiji Basin Triple Junction and an Investigation into Triple Junction Formation

Besaw, Mary 30 November 2022 (has links)
Triple junctions form at the intersection of three tectonic plates and are a necessary consequence of new microplate formation. The splitting of a plate into two smaller plates always results in the formation of two triple junctions. As a result, they are fundamental structural elements of ocean floor geodynamics. Their evolution is influenced by the complex interplay of near- and far-field plate dynamics, crustal types, and mantle processes, and they include a wide range of boundary types. The long-term stability and evolution of triple junctions are influenced by continuous plate reorganization, such as in the complex microplate mosaics of the Western Pacific margin. To better understand how triple junctions form and respond to near- and far-field stresses, this study presents a detailed examination of the North Fiji Basin Triple Junction (NFBTJ), which is located within one of the largest and most mature back-arc basins of the Pacific margin. A new geological map of the NFBTJ at a 1:500,000 scale is presented. The mapping provides insight into the factors controlling plate fragmentation and crustal growth during triple junction formation. The map is based on a compilation of more than 50 years of ship-based bathymetry, backscatter data, gravity and magnetics used to reconstruct the spreading history, magmatic productivity, tectonic fabric and origin of geological formations of the basin. These aspects also have important implications for understanding the origins and evolution of large-scale back-arc basin hydrothermal systems. Crustal growth in the NFB is recorded by the area-age relationships of different geological formations identified in the new geological map. The triple junction is the site of volume addition related to enhanced magmatic productivity, with a large Central Volcanic Complex (CVC) (shield volcano and inflated ridge) at its centre and a well-developed spreading ridge along the SW limb. Extensive lava flows emanating from the CVC covers early spreading-related fabric in the NE and NW limbs. The large shield volcano, which is 0.5 km high and occupies an area of at least 62.3 km², has a distinctive 2.5-km diameter summit caldera with extensive hydrothermal activity in the south. The CVC and surrounding lava flows are estimated to have grown in place at a rate of 3,000 m²/yr, thus dominating the recent history of the NFBTJ. By contrast, earlier crustal growth along the SW and NW spreading segments, prior to the emergence of CVC, is estimated to have been ~1,650 m²/yr and 200 m²/yr respectively. The quantitative analysis of rifting and the eruptive history highlight previously unrecognized near and far-field geodynamic influences on the triple junction formation. In particular, the pulse of crustal growth at the NFB beginning at 3 Ma was related to rift propagation from the south in response to rotation of the NFB that produced some of the fastest growing crust in the oceans. Comparisons with a global database of triple junctions show that the evolution of the NFBTJ shares many features with other microplate mosaics and that processes related to triple junction formation is associated with crustal growth wherever triple junctions occur. The high heat flow and voluminous mafic magmatism has been compared to rapid crustal growth in some ancient greenstone belts, such as the Archean Abitibi Greenstone Belt in the Superior Province of Canada. In particular, the NFBTJ is a possible modern analog of large central volcanic complexes that characterize ancient greenstone-belt development.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rosa Lídia da Silva.pdf: 47760667 bytes, checksum: d80910ea86dadb29eb499036da193a43 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-06-28 / This dissertation is inserted in the Research Line: Text and speech in the oral and written modalities of the Program of Postgraduate Studies in Portuguese Language. It is the study of a model whose purpose is to guide the writing process of the didactic unit document, by teachers authors or experts in the disciplines. We use the nomenclature didactic unit as a series of teaching and learning activities assembled and organized for learning purposes (LIBÂNEO; FREITAS, [2009]). This model, named didactic unit template, is built with the components of a didactic unit, and may contain autoforming features, which facilitate the production of the final document, even by less experienced authors. Our main objective was to better understand the template, its composition and socio-rhetorical organization, to reflect if and in what way it affects the quality of the material it supports, contributing to the teaching and learning process. We use as theoretical foundation the socio-rhetorical studies of gender. The authors consulted were Swales (1990; 2004); Miller (1984, 2014); Bhatia (1993, 2001, 2012); Bazerman (2000); Bazerman and Miller (2011); Aguiar (2011); Biasi-Rodrigues and Bezerra (2012); Campos (2014); Crescitelli and Campos (2015) and Motta-Roth (1998; 2004). Being restricted the access to templates, for reasons of copyright, we began our study by textbooks, in view of being a type of text whose components are included in didactic units and for having their use recognized in the support of educational activities. We analysed ten books and, of these, we selected two to present the more detailed analysis. Having obtained a template of allowed use, named as Template COL, we were able to analyse it and reproduce it here. This model was created by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), an international organization supporting education, especially in less developed countries. For a second example, we describe the items of a didactic unit template, based on our experience working with this type of model. In these models, we identify rhetorical moves and steps, according to Swales' (1990) CARS Model, to better understand the organization and interrelationship of its elements. In the course of research, we have a contact with a case study of a researcher active in the development of education in Namibia (FRÖHLICH, 2008), which shows the practical use of the template to support authors, even with less experience. The contact with the Template COL and the reality in which it is used has shown us that – in addition to helping in the quality of the final document, as we have seen previously because of our professional experience – the application of templates can be a valuable resource, including in less favored regions. Analysis by socio-rhetorical principles allowed us to see the text through more than one approach, considering its objectives, its functioning and the people affected by it. For us, it has been evident that the careful planning of the didactic unit and the construction of its final document in an organized way are important so that it fulfills its purpose with students and teachers. In this composition, the author can be aided by the template, which also requires planning and constitutes a tool to support the preparation of documents for educational purposes / Esta dissertação insere-se na Linha de Pesquisa: Texto e discurso nas modalidades oral e escrita do Programa de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Língua Portuguesa.

Proximity-based attacks in wireless sensor networks

Subramanian, Venkatachalam 29 March 2013 (has links)
The nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) utilize the radio frequency (RF) channel to communicate. Given that the RF channel is the primary communication channel, many researchers have developed techniques for securing that channel. However, the RF channel is not the only interface into a sensor. The sensing components, which are primarily designed to sense characteristics about the outside world, can also be used (or misused) as a communication (side) channel. In our work, we aim to characterize the side channels for various sensory components (i.e., light sensor, acoustic sensor, and accelerometer). While previous work has focused on the use of these side channels to improve the security and performance of a WSN, we seek to determine if the side channels have enough capacity to potentially be used for malicious activity. Specifically, we evaluate the feasibility and practicality of the side channels using today's sensor technology and illustrate that these channels have enough capacity to enable the transfer of common, well-known malware. Given that a significant number of modern robotic systems depend on the external side channels for navigation and environment-sensing, they become potential targets for side-channel attacks. Therefore, we demonstrate this relatively new form of attack which exploits the uninvestigated but predominantly used side channels to trigger malware residing in real-time robotic systems such as the iRobot Create. The ultimate goal of our work is to show the impact of this new class of attack and also to motivate the need for an intrusion detection system (IDS) that not only monitors the RF channel, but also monitors the values returned by the sensory components.
