Sentidos e significados sobre o choro das crianças nas creches públicas do Município de Juiz de Fora/MG / Significances and meanings about crying children in public nursey school in the municpality of Juiz de Fora/MGNúbia Aparecida Schaper Santos 27 February 2012 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to find out whether shared feelings and constructed meanings for childrens crying in public nursery schools of the city of Juiz de Fora, during reflection sessions with coordinators/principals, produce theoretical reflection spaces on practices that may create a reflection practice. Based on the type of problem formulated, I chose to work the methodological perspective from a critical research paradigm achieved in the critical collaboration research modality with a social-historical-cultural focus. This is justified by the fact that I seek to understand the place childrens crying occupies in the practices of coordinators/principals, and try to identify if awareness of institutionalized actions can produce changes in a nursery schools internal practices. The thesis discourse corpus consists of 10 reflecting sessions; all resulting data was organized and reviewed from the Aguiar and Ozella (2006) Signification Nuclei theoretical-methodological perspective. The theoretical field is included in the dialogue among Vigotski, Bakhtin, and Wallon. This is because these authors have immensely contributed to the discussion on meaning, significance, language and conscience, the proximal development zone, as well as the study of emotion, especially on the manifestation of childrens crying in the context of a nursery school. The Signification Nuclei architecture revealed the necessity to go deeper into these questions relating to the different outlooks on childrens crying; strategies to deal with the crying from the view of coordinators/principals; the control/uncontrol/non-control of crying; the interrelation of crying, nursery school, and family, and finally the theoretical-practical reflection as a possibility to reverberate in a nursery schools everyday life. Analyses confirmed three basic premises: a) that emotion constitutes the first interaction resource with the other, which antecedes the symbolic representation itself and therefore it is of great value to go deeper into this subject in educational courses; b) that when we make the experienced scene clearer, this clearness can bring elements for other possible interventions, for other possible dialogues on childrens crying. The transformation perspective can happen exactly in the dialogue between everyday life, history and reflection spaces; c) that the fundamental aspect, in the context of education, is not to focus only on the context to be transmitted without the possibility of reflection on the target context itself, because it is through the potential withdrawal from and necessary strangeness of routine practices, sporadically or almost never questioned, that reflection and critique are established.

The relation between scores on the child abuse potential inventory and physiologic and perceptual responses to high- and normal-pitched infant cry soundsCrowe, Helen P. January 1987 (has links)
Thirty nonparent adults were assigned to either a High CAP group (n=15) or a Low CAP group (n=15) based upon their scores on the Child Abuse Potential Inventory. Each subject's heart rate, skin conductance level and diastolic blood pressure were assessed while listening to a series of 4 high- and 4 normal-pitched infant cries. Subjects then rated the same cries on 6 perceptual scale items. Results indicated that the adults in the High CAP group showed a reliably higher resting heart rate following cry presentation and tended to respond with more heart rate change than adults in the Low CAP group. Adults in the High CAP group also responded to the normal-pitched cries with a higher skin conductance level than the Low CAP adults. Irrespective of CAP group, listeners' skin conductance level became attenuated in response to the normal-, but not the high-pitched infant cry sounds.
In addition, all listeners perceived the high-pitched cry sounds as more aversive, arousing, distressing, urgent and sick sounding than the normal-pitched cry sounds. Results are discussed in terms of the importance of examining both adult and child characteristics that may mediate individual responsivity to infant cues. / M.S.

Detection by adults of differences in the duration of pauses in infant criesSchuetze, Pamela 10 November 2009 (has links)
Crying is the primary source of distal communication through which newborn and young infants’ needs are related to the caregiving environment and, as such, this social behavior is vital to the survival and development of the infant. Recently, a series of experimental studies has begun to isolate the effects of specific durational components of crying on adults’ perceptions of infant cries. These studies have found the duration of pauses within and between cries to be perceptually salient features, however, the point at which adults were able to detect changes in the duration of the pauses was not addressed.
Seventy-five introductory psychology students participated in three experiments designed to determine Difference Thresholds for the point at which manipulations in the durations of pauses before and after the inspiration in infant cries were detectable by the adult listener. The Difference Threshold for the pause before the inspiration (PBI) with the duration of the pause after the inspiration (PAI) held constant was an increase of 354.18% in the duration of the PBI. Difference Thresholds for increases and decreases in the duration of the PAI were 58.53% and -61.91%, respectively. For increases and decreases in the duration of the PAI with a perceptibly longer PBI, Difference Thresholds were 39.82% and -57.6%, respectively. The Difference Threshold for an increase in the duration of the PBI with a perceptibly shorter duration of the PAI was 420.06% and the Difference Threshold for a decrease in the duration of the PBI with a perceptibly longer duration of the PAI was 485.61%. Results provided the first known experimental evidence of the point at which changes in the durations of pauses before and after the inspiration in infant crying are detectable by adult listeners. / Master of Science

Spädbarnskolik - det långvariga, otröstliga gråtandet : En litteraturstudie om föräldrarnas upplevelser / Infant Colic – the prolonged, inconsolable crying : A literature study about parents experiencesCustovic, Belma, Babic, Dragana January 2017 (has links)
Infant colic is a common problem that affects every fifth to tenth infant in Scandinavia and is a common reason for parents seeking to child health services for help. The aim of this study was to describe parents' experiences of living with an infant who has colic. The study was conducted as an integrative literature review based on 12 scientific articles. The results showed that infant colic affected the entire family whose living constantly alternated between hope and despair. Parents of children with colic experienced both physical and psychological impact on the health. They had difficulty controlling their emotions, which could cause the child harm. Infant colic complicated partner relationships, affected relationships within the family and reduced parents' social networks. Relief from family and friends, as well as support from the CHC-nurse was of great importance to parents. Many parents, however, felt a lack of support from the CHC-nurse and wanted more confirmation and understanding from the CHC-nurse of what they experienced during the infant's period with colic.

Expressões emocionais de sorriso e choro na relação do bebê com seus pares, na creche / Smiling and crying emotional expressions in infant-peer relationships in day care center context.Dentz, Marisa von 11 March 2016 (has links)
Emotional expression is a primary means of human infant communication and its manifestation is a resource that guarantees their survival. This theme has been extensively studied, usually in the infant\'s relationship with adults, more particularly with the mother, in laboratory conditions and home environment. However, new social configurations have emerged in which the care of young children has been increasingly shared with educational institutions, where infant peers are the most frequent partners. A literature review related to emotional expressiveness among infant peers highlights gaps in this field, and there are authors who do not recognize the occurrence infant peer interaction, since such phenomenon in the first two years of life is not seen as feasible. Thus, this work aims to verify if there are manifestations of smiling and crying emotional expressions in infant peer interactions in a day care nursery environment. And, if affirmative, well seek to investigate how do these manifestations occur. With theoretical and methodological basis in the Network of Meanings perspective, we conducted a longitudinal a multiple case study cases with qualitative analysis. The participants were eighteen infants from a public day care center in the state of São Paulo, with three teachers responsible for the class. Among all the babies, Tiago (five to ten months old) and Bruno (eight months to one year and one month of age) were the focal subjects. Weekly thirty-minute (per participant) video recordings were conducted for five months. The analysis of the empirical material was developed in two stages: 1) mapping of smiling and crying expressions in peer-interaction, identifying the peer involved; and, 2) qualitative analysis of interactive episodes in which the focal subjects emotionally expressed themselves with peers. Based on different forms of infant expression, both based on the literature and empirical data, the following emotional expression, categories were created: laughter, smiling, whimpering, crying and prolonged crying. In the analysis, there was no occurrence of laughter in infant peer interactions, at least in the scenes recorded. Regarding Tiago, smiles were first manifested in play situations and changed over time. Around eight / nine months both subjects` smiling began to impact partners, who would briefly respond to the expression. Bruno smiling episodes demonstrated a variety of senses identifiable in the interactions, smiling not only toward peers, but also with and due to peers. Despite the changes in the subjects` smiling over time, the process were not expressed in a linear fashion. In crying expressions, change concerning quality and length of expressions was observed, but there were no differences in peer interactions. Peer interactions in which Tiago cried were related mostly to the discomfort arising from intrusive physical contact with other babies. In Bruno`s case, crying occurred mostly in interactions involving annoyance by competition situations or loss of toys. For both expressions studied, we found that smiles, although less frequent among peers, have caused more reaction in peers. Future studies investigating this theme are needed, given the importance and great variety of the emotional expressiveness manifestations in infants peer interactions in collective environments.

The Tower is Everywhere: Symbolic Exchange and Discovery of Meaning in Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49Kincade, Jonathan 06 May 2012 (has links)
Thomas Pynchon’s novel, The Crying of Lot 49, details Oedipa Maas’ quest to unearth a possibly centuries-old clandestine mail system, the Trystero. Oedipa is immersed in notions of sociality and she must navigate the social landscape, searching for clues as to the existence of the social system. In her quest she assumes the role of a detective who searches for meaning, as she looks for clues and questions others who might potentially be privy to the secrets of the Trystero. She necessarily performs the process of symbolic exchange with those she encounters in an attempt at ascertaining some greater meaning within the world that she thinks might lie behind the Trystero. In this, the nature of the circulation of meaning is revealed as a cultural construct.

Details, baby, details : a feminist criticism of The crying game / Feminist criticism of The crying game.Henderson, Susan E. January 1994 (has links)
This study examined gender portrayals in the film, The Crvinq Game. The societal labels for gender, "masculine" and "feminine," are not negative in and of themselves. However, when they are coupled with stereotypes, their power to direct behavior and perception formation can rob people of their freedom to be simply "human." This study primarily focused upon the costs of maintaining, challenging, and abandoning gender role stereotypes as illustrated in The Crvinq Game. Sonja Foss's four-step approach to feminist criticism was used as a tool for examination of this film.By examining the appearances, attitudes, and behaviors of the four central characters in the film, two messages emerged. First, in all four cases, being of a feminine nature was less desirable than being of a masculine nature. Second, Neil Jordan, the film's director, prescribes that all people should transcend the boundaries of gender, and simply allow themselves and others to be human.Jordan's humanistic message also provides insight into expansion of rhetorical methods and theories. Feminist criticism and Queer theory could attempt to transcend the boundaries of gender, and work toward the inclusion of all non-traditional sex roles. / Department of Speech Communication
