Colliding Realities: An Ethnographic Account of the Politics of Identity and Knowledge in Intercultural Communication in Child and Family Health

Grant, Julian Maree, julian.grant@flinders.edu.au 11 November 1908 (has links)
ABSTRACT Cultural beliefs and values implicitly shape every aspect of the way we parent our children and how we communicate about parenting. For parents who are migrants and experiencing parenting in a new country it is essential that child and family health professionals better understand how the cultural self influences practice. Child and family health professionals work with families who come from cultures other than their own on a daily basis. How they communicate with these families is the subject of this ethnographic study into culture and communication in child and family health. Taking culture as its starting point this study explored the everyday communication experiences of child health professionals including child and family health nurses, social workers and doctors in a statewide child and family health service in South Australia. Data included participant observation, video and in-depth interview data. Drawing on insights from cultural studies including postcolonial and feminist scholarship the analysis showed that child health professionals attempted to use contemporary discourses of service provision such as partnership with enthusiasm and with genuine intent. However their application of partnership was limited by unexamined binary constructs within dominant pedagogic tools of culture and communication. Analysis showed that four key binaries structured the communication practice of participants in this study; public or private knowledge, ideologies of sameness or difference, organisational or professional philosophies of practice and the expert or partner in intercultural communication. Three body analysis is introduced as a strategy to work with these binary challenges that seem to present when practice attempts to incorporate theory without consideration of the contexts of use. The combination of postcolonial feminist critique and three body analysis stimulates an explicit examination of health care inequalities as they intersect with the ongoing effects of colonisation. Current professional strategies for working with people who are new arrivals or migrants to Australia focus on understanding differences associated with particular ethic and cultural groups. Despite much work being undertaken to understand difference, in practice this culturalist approach underpinned by a belief in the essential nature of human kind, has resulted in people who are migrants or new arrivals continuing to report poor communication by health professionals as a primary barrier to their health care. Theoretical analysis suggests that this approach ignores differences in power relations among ethnic groups and ultimately manifests in racism. Further, contemporary communication pedagogies in child and family health reinforce this inattention to relations of power when health professionals are instructed to communicate in ways that are regardless of difference. By advocating that people are treated the same, historic and situated issues of gender, race, and socioeconomic inequalities are ignored. In this way binaries of sameness/difference are perpetuated. Those parents located in marginalised positions of difference experience inequities in health care. In this study, child and family health professionals frequently drew from their own personal experiences of parenting to determine the content of information given to new parents, and to inform their approach to intercultural communication. In doing so they unselfconsciously conflated their personal and professional pedagogies and presented all information as professional. Child and family health practices are deeply cultured. Many practices are not scientifically proven and as such do not fit comfortably with the rational scientific medical paradigm with which they are aligned. Where disciplinary knowledge can be assessed and evaluated, this study found that there was no equivalent place for the evaluation of understanding of cultural knowledge — it was assumed as universal. Deeply cultured personal information tendered by participants represents a normative world that is white, western, middle class and gendered. Participants did not recognise themselves as cultured, nor did they recognise the potential impact of bringing this unexamined cultural self into the professional encounter. This resulted in seepage of practice that was democratically racist. This is where outward commitments to justice equality and fairness paradoxically exist with conflicting personal ideologies of sameness. Challenged to find a place for these constructs to coexist participants outwardly identify with the organisationally preferred position of social justice or evidence-based practice. However, participant observation and discussion of practice demonstrated that when conflicting personal beliefs and values were left unattended they found ways of surreptitiously creeping into and shaping the consultation. It seems that modernist theories do not provide adequate ontological and epistemological understandings for working with, and valuing pluralism in multiculture. Rather they constrict and limit practice which leads to an unrecognised perpetuation of colonising agendas in child and family health. Findings from this study contribute to the growing need to find ways to work with and unsettle existing binaries of communication and culture. The methods also suggest ways forward to support change in practice leading to professional development that is mindful and regardful of plurality in culture and communication. Interweaving three body analyses with postcolonial feminism offers a decolonising strategy for application in the multiculture that is Australia. Due to the spatial and temporal spaces created by using three bodies alongside postcolonial feminism, this combination becomes a tangible approach to deconstruction, for child and family health professionals that is both theoretical and practical.

In the context of competitive basketball for several aspects that may interfere with outcome of a game, or even a competition, such as physical, technical, tactical and psychological. The latter can cite as an example the emotional aspect, which can be decisive, both for the defeat as a team to victory. The primary goal since of this work is to analyze the emotions of athletes adults Special Division basketball A-1 series of São Paulo championship of basketball 2009-2010 season, to answer the following question arises: what cultural artifacts and instruments are present in basketball, and, therefore, are symbolic intermediaries and resulting in appropriation by players? What meanings resulting from this appropriation are crucial in these players? The methodological proposal join with cultural psychology, which understands the culture as a central analysis dimension in psychology, and human psychology key point is the meaning. Thus, this theory believes that human beings survive and fulfillment through social institutions, cultural activities, concepts, artifacts and psychological phenomena socially organized. The focus of this work is artifacts and instruments concerning the basketball, which gives two key concepts to cultural psychology: mediation and appropriation. This is a qualitative research study, and as a method of analysis of content through semi-structured interviews with five athletes of special division series A-1 of São Paulo championship. Created two categories of analysis, one institution and other artifacts/instruments. With respect to the first category the athletes pointed out the importance of institutions for their engagement in the practice of basketball, for example, clubs, projects developed by the city of São Paulo and schools. The family is the primary mediator for the engagement of athletes in basketball. Thus, the dialectic relationship between the institutions, concepts, artifacts, and psychological phenomena. With respect to artifacts/instruments, the primary motivator appointed for the performance of athletes was twisted, which is the "home" factor in your gym in its kind. The main instruments used as mediators' athletes were dressing room, the reserve bank, statistics and video, and through these athletes take concepts concerning the basketball, which help in them in their performances in court. The instruments which have not had any significance in the performance of athletes and their emotions were to the backboard and the hoop. The trophy medals are instruments that represent the most important for athletes, because it means that have succeeded in their profession. Television has a significant importance, because through the athletes can earn status at work, high remuneration, and thus social advancement. The concentration was the way athletes sought to regulate emotions. The main mediators athletes regulate emotions were more experienced team-mates and the technician / Mestrado / Educação Fisica e Sociedade / Mestre em Educação Física

The Lagardère group adjusting to change cultural and communication industries

Diard, Michel 30 January 2015 (has links)
The Lagardère group has undergone dramatic changes from the days of the ‘Librairie Hachette’ to those of the Lagardère group. The conglomerate born from the merger* between Hachette and Matra has now given up all its high-tech, transport and automotive activities. This thesis aims at uncovering the evidence of the successive steps in the transformation of the group in order to highlight the roots of its strategic choices and to shed light on its current position among cultural industries. It also aims at analysing the conditions of the financialisation of the group, its technological development and its strategies regarding the communication industries. The activities of and changes undergone by each of the current branches of the group -namely Lagardère Publishing (book publishing), Lagardère Active (press, radio, television, audio-visual production, digital media and advertising), Lagardère Services (distribution and retail networks in transport areas) and Lagardère Unlimited (entertainment and sports rights marketing)- are studied separately here, thus allowing to analyse their specificities and strategies, compared to each of their respective competitors. Finally, this thesis analyses how the various Lagardère strategies question the theories about the cultural industries.

Réunion maloya : La créolisation réunionnaise telle qu'entendue depuis sa musique traditionnelle

Lagarde, Benjamin 13 December 2012 (has links)
Whereas a reflexive chapter, focused on the progressive immersion we realised among the actors of possessions cults from afro-malagasy origins living in Reunion Island, had been primarly thought to join this thesis, the main effort consists here in the documentation of the maloya. Effectively, an overlook to what's been said of this traditionnal music requiered such a missing work attached to an element recently inscribed on the UNESCO patrimonial list. Resuming the available knowledge about the maloya, which is considered since the early moment of the colonization as the reunionese « Black music », the purpose was to reach the modern era and then underlying the importance of this esthetical practice in the definition of what could be called, under certain conditions, this « kréol identity ». The post-colonial role that played maloya during the years 1960-1970 appears newly as we emphasize his historical implications. We've also been able to relocate the common point of vue already existing of the maloya in scientifical field as well as on the public scene from the musicians and their cultual significations. Analyzing, for example, his four distincts repertories, we open to an original understanding of the past and the present of a creolized culture that had always took music as a fundement of its existence. This work makes also possible the reflexion about the place of the « Kaf » (Reunionneses of black origins) in this cultural construction, and maybe, the one of the afro-descendents and their so-called « black music » in the invention of our new globalized world.

Genius Loci : a cultural centre for the visual and performing arts

Sparks, Christopher Duane 09 December 2009 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to explore the possibilities of architecture as a sensory phenomenon and to explore how we can experience architectural space through all our senses, and how architecture can influence how we experience our senses in space. The project is located within the cultural node identified within the Nelson Mandela Development Corridor (MDC) and the proposed building is one of a cultural centre for the visual and performing arts. The centre is aimed at creating a heightened awareness and insight into the creative processes of artists and performers for the general public, community, users and occupants of the centre and passers-by. This will be achieved through the creation of visual connections and physical interactions between the users, artists and performers and passers by as well has creating a heightened experience of space and place on a human scale for visitors, performers, artists and general public. The centre also incorporates retail, commercial and residential components in order to energise the square and centre throughout the day and night, creating an active 24hour environment, which is often lacking in a development of this nature. The activities of the centre, along with those of the existing Oeverzicht houses and old M.O.T.H. club, that have been incorporated into the development spill out onto a central urban activity square, where impromptu and planned performances are to be staged. The aim of the development is ultimately to develop a synthesis between arts, culture, economy and urban vitality by creating a platform for the arts. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the ability of spaces inside this building typology to assist in inspiring each of its occupants through the creation of memorable spatial experiences. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Architecture / unrestricted

2300-1793 av. J.-C.) / Aspects of private memorial cults, in the archaeological and epigraphical documentation, from VIth to XIIth dynasties (circ. 2300-1793 BC)

Legros, Rémi 28 June 2010 (has links)
Memorial cults are discussed in a pragmatic way to establish the actual practices, their duration, their importance and their evolution. For this, the necropolis of Pepy Ist at Saqqara, is the subject of special attention and a corpus of 160 unpublished offering tables is presented in full.In the first part, the study seeks to characterize locations of cult places. It reveals a hierarchy of these places by a sectorization of the necropolises and a progressive intrusion in urban area with private chapels and divine temples. The second part focuses on the practices themselves. The main materials are analyzed: the offering table, the stele, the statue. Each is described in its specificity and relation to rituals provided. Particular attention is paid also to buildings, including the different types of private chapels. The final section analyzes the motivations of cults that can be divided into three main categories: administrative practices, intentions within the piety and devotional practices. These three aspects together indicate a change in social history with the development, from the sixth dynasty, of individualistic practices, in substitution of administrative and communal traditional practices. The second volume presents the corpus of offering tables from the necropolis of Pepy Ist. A thorough analysis of their dating is performed using a matrix permutation seriation. It reveals for the first time eight successive periods between the beginning of the sixth dynasty and the advent of the Middle Kingdom.

J. -C.) / Researches on the Rituals of Heroization in the Greek World (from the Archaic Period to the Third Century AD).

Carvalho, Paulo 17 September 2013 (has links)
If the heroes of Greek mythology are particularly well known historical figures themselves, are much less. Yet the phenomenon known as heroization concerned many characters. This study proposes to examine these characters for whom the historical existence is proven, and who had been assigned the status of heroes and thus accessing to the divine sphere benefited honors but also cults. This study also aims to understand all of these rites in connection with the hero and heroization. It also presents the evolution knew by this phenomenon during the period from the Archaic period to the third century AD. But also highlights the differences and similarities between the different regions and cities that composed the entire Greek world. This study also tries to learn more about the identity of these characters, who, for many of them remain unknown of the "great history." Yet these characters deserve special attention because their study singularly clarifies and provides a much better understanding of the religious life of the ancient Greeks.

Les sanctuaires romano-celtiques du Massif Central : organisation et évolution architecturale / The romano-celtic sanctuaries from Massif Central : organization and architectural development. / Die römisch-keltischen Heiligtümer im Massif Central : Organisation und architektonische Entwicklung

Garcia, Magali 25 June 2013 (has links)
Based on the study of four sacred places (Corent, Gergovie, Montluçon and Tintignac) located in the French region of Massif Central, the purpose of this research is to analyse the architectural and functional development of the sacred areas in Gaul dating from the IIIrd century B.C to the IIIrd c. A.D. Focusing on shape, function and organization of the features, the analysis relies also on the different kind of artefacts and their management in the sacred area. The four sanctuaries of Massif Central are confronted to more than thirty other sacred places spread all over the Romanized Celtic zone in order to understand the romanisation of religious behaviours in Gaul and more precisely in the Arvernes area.
