Post Traumatic Stress Symptoms and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Personnel.

Woods, Ginger Lee 05 May 2007 (has links) (PDF)
EMS personnel were examined for Post Traumatic Stress symptoms and the usefulness of Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) using the Los Angeles Symptom Checklist (LASC) and a demographics questionnaire. This study revealed that women in this group show higher PTSD symptoms than male coworkers. Level of Training (LOT) of the EMS provider did not demonstrate a significant difference in whether a provider developed PTSD. EMS personnel receiving debriefing actually suffered greater levels of PTSD than those that did not receive debriefing. And 16% of EMS providers in this study suffered from PTSD, while approximately 20% suffered from partial PTSD or PTSS. The results suggest that there are high levels of PTSD within the EMS community, especially in women. This study also suggests that CISD does not help with PTSD symptoms and may actually worsen them.

A survey study on the Mmotong community's knowledge and attitudes towards collaboration between traditional and western-trained mental health care practitioners

Matlebjoane, Lerato Hildah. January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / Globally, mental disorders are a growing public health problem. The World Health Organisation has urged member states to prioritise efforts to address the growing pandemic of mental illness. One strategy identified by WHO is the promotion of the use of traditional medicines. Similarly, a collaboration between Western and Traditional health care practitioners has been identified as another strategy that could help bridge the gap of shortages of mental health care providers and the cost of professional mental health care services. The present study investigated the Mmotong community’s knowledge of mental disorders and attitudes towards collaboration between Traditional healers and Western-trained practitioners in the treatment of mental disorders. A quantitative study was conducted, with a sample of 200 participants (Female = 131; Male = 69; in the age range of 18 years and older). Participants were selected using convenience sampling. Data was collected using a questionnaire and analysed using the SPSS to draw out the descriptive statistics. A majority (59%) of participants were found to possess knowledge of mental disorders. Attitudinally, most participants favoured Western-oriented mental health care services in terms of effectiveness. Despite this finding, a majority (69%) endorsed the need for collaboration between the two healthcare systems. A gender analysis revealed that more females (71.8%) than males (63.8%) favoured collaboration. While analysed by age, those 18-37 years (63.5%), 38-57 years (75.5%) and over the age of 58 years (75.5%) favoured the collaboration respectively. The present study findings show that in this community, the majority of members possess knowledge of mental illness. The community also favours the collaboration between traditional and medically oriented health care providers in mental health care. The study is concluded by making recommendations to the government, Traditional healers, and Western-oriented health practitioners to work towards the harnessing of collaboration of the two healthcare systems.

Professionalising criminology in South Africa

Beukman, Brenda Ann 30 November 2005 (has links)
This study explores and describes the professional role of the Criminologist in South Africa. National and international research and personal practice are used to demonstrate the role of the South African Criminologist. A qualitative research design supports the exploratory nature of this study. The areas of focus are veracity assessing, criminogenesis, assessment of juveniles, assisting victims of crime through debriefing and compiling victim impact statements and compiling pre-sentence reports. Each of these areas rely on the expert knowledge of the Criminologist and is accompanied by real life case study which is preceded by theoretical explanations and research findings. The research also highlights the quest for professionalising Criminology in South Africa by presenting and analysing the formal application for recognition. / Criminology / D.Litt. et Phil. Facilitating conscious awareness among critical care nurses

Moola, Shehnaaz 29 February 2004 (has links)
Critical care nurses experience stressful situations in their daily working environments. The question arises for nurses: are there adequate support systems in the critical care environment and what are critical care nurses doing to mantain their own health and well-being. Facilitating conscious awareness among critical care nurses could enhance their resiliency and their hardiness, strengthening their coping capacities in stressful working situations. The contextual framework adopted for this research was the Neuman Systems Model. A qualitative research approach (exploratory, descriptive and contextual) was used to explore and describe the stress experienced by critical care nurses. Focus group interviews were conducted with critical care nurses and individual interviews with nurse managers. The results revealed their perceptions and experiences about the effects of stress in the critical care environment, as well as some of their coping strategies. Raising critical care nurses' levels of conscious awareness about their coping strategies with stressful events in their daily working lives, could enhance their resiliency and hardiness, enabling them to continue working effectively in stressful environments. This could enhance the general well-being of individual critical care nurses, the nursing care rendered to critically ill patients, and save money for the health care services by reducing turnover rates among critical care nurses.

Petersson, Eva Unknown Date (has links)

A DEBRIEFING TECHNIQUE IN HIGH-FIDELITY PATIENT SIMULATION AND COMPETENT DECISION-MAKING ABILITIES AMONG NURSING STUDENTS

Seago, Trena 01 January 2016 (has links)
Nursing faculty are utilizing high-fidelity patient simulation (HPS) with debriefing to help engage nursing students in making competent clinical decisions. This quasi-experimental study examined the use of HPS with debriefing and students’ ability to make nursing care decisions using standardized exams. The experimental group received debriefing after HPS and the control group did not receive debriefing after HPS. The pre- and post-test assessed participants’ ability to make clinical care decisions. The analysis of the pre-test and post-test HESI scores showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups.
