Detecting Heat Waves: Comparison of Various Heat Wave Definitions with Excess MortalityWatkins, Lance Elliott 15 August 2014 (has links)
Four different heat wave definitions (as outlined by Hajat et al, 2006; D’lppoliti et al, 2010; Anderson and Bell, 2011; Nairn and Fawcett, 2013) were used to characterize heat wave mortality across the United States. The goal was to identify if certain definitions perform better or worse than others. Overall every definition performed poorly, resulting in high False-Alarm Ratios and low Heidke Skill Scores. However, the Nairn and Fawcett (2013) and Anderson and Bell (2011) definitions performed consistently better than the other definitions. Despite several limitations, the results of this study indicate that the heat wave definitions need refinement. Additionally, the Nairn and Fawcett (2013) definition could be one of the best definitions for assessing heat waves and heat-related mortality.

Coliving: an emerging term without a common definition / Coliving: en växande term utan gemensam definitionSteding, Daniel January 2019 (has links)
The population of Earth is increasing vastly fast which has a great impact on all the large cities around the world. The society of today is facing new problems each day and the housing sector is one of them, due to the unbalanced situation of demand and supply. During the same time, the term of sharing economy has established its ground in people’s lives as they have realized the benefits of using instead of possessing when it comes to products and services. Sweden is one of all the markets with both this increasing housing problem and increasing trend of sharing economy. The old, but today rising housing form of shared accommodation has been identified by some entrepreneurs as a possible solution for this unbalanced situation. However, sharing accommodation, or rather coliving is an emerging term that has spread widely through the world’s housing market the last years and can be seen in many different configurations depending on its location and purpose. This study aims to establish an understanding of what coliving is in terms of different key aspects in today’s society in order to formulate a conceptual definition of the emerging term. This has been done by an inductive approach of a qualitative method based on an interview study and previous literature. The empirical findings indicate that coliving relates to five key dimensions, eight key themes and one key sub theme. These aspects need to be related and taken into account during the development process of a coliving project. The identified aspects and the formulated conceptual definition bridge the academic gap as they build up the foundation of what coliving is in today’s society. Hence, contributes with valuable information for the topics of sustainability, ethics and urban development.

Ståhlberg, Christine January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine if the Swedish syndicalist movement SAC´s ideology also is able to function as a worldview. Worldview is a contested concept and the meaning may shift depending on who you are talking to or what study you are reading. Therefore, I aim to create a deeper understanding of the concept of worldview in our time with this study. The material is a booklet from SAC that explains their ideology and trade union work. I will analyse the material through a qualitative content analysis combined with Stenmark and Franck´s (2016) worldview definition as a theory. The research questions for this study are based on Stenmark and Franck´s (2016) worldview definition, which of the smaller worldview components are possible to find in the material? And given the answer to research question 1, to what extent can SAC´s ideology and union work be understood as a worldview based on Stenmark and Franck´s definition? The study concludes that SAC´s ideology and trade union work are able to function as a worldview. Several of the main components of a worldview is present in the material like SAC´s view of soceity and central valuation system among others. The description of how a worldview functions allows the ideology to be seen as a worldview.

Våld är våld! Eller?Dzebo, Lejla January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate how social workers within different areas of work in Malmö, who comes in contact with persons who have been subject to honour-related violence, sees the problem, if they have any special view on the cause of the violence and investigate the efforts which are offered to individuals who have been or are subject to honour-related violence.I wanted to investigate if there exists a universal view among social workers in Malmö of the definition of and way of working with persons affected by honour-related violence. Various reports show that there exists great disagreement among debaters as well as social workers regarding the definition of honour-related violence. There are also different sentiments about the cause of honour-related violence within research. I conducted four interviews on five individuals employed within different areas of work in Malmö which comes in contact with girls and women who have been subject to honour-related violence. My study shows that there exists great dissent among social workers regarding the term honour-related violence, the cause of the problem and the concerned areas of work works with different ways with persons which they come in contact with.

Planning For The Future: Florida Community Colleges' Preparations For The Advent Of High Definition TelevisionWyly, Sharon 01 January 2008 (has links)
Throughout the literature, researchers reported on the problems that post-secondary institutions have had with technology (Birchard, 2001; Green, 2003; Starrett & Rogers, 2003;). Given limited budgets and the need to train faculty and staff, many colleges have struggled to find a way to use technology to enhance, not hinder, pedagogy (Cuban, 2001; Oppenheimer, 2003). This study was conducted to examine the impact of the federally mandated change in the television standard to high definition television (HDTV) on Florida's community colleges. Surveys were sent to the chief technology officers of the 28 community colleges in Florida. Additionally, eight interviews were conducted in five of the institutions. From both the qualitative data and the quantitative data, a picture emerged of the institutions and the conversion status. Of the 17 survey respondents, 11 reported no plans for conversion. Of those that did have plans for conversion, few concrete details were reported. Instead, the representatives of the institutions seemed to believe that it was not necessary to make plans for the change to HDTV. Costs represented the major concern of the survey respondents with implementation and training listed as the second and third most important issues. Many participants from the community colleges had some thoughts about HDTV, but these were more on the departmental level rather than college-wide. HDTV was projected to become the television standard in February 2009. The long lead time on this innovation should have provided community colleges with time to plan. As revealed, however, community colleges in Florida failed to plan for change.

Groundwater Recharge Areas: Identification and Protection Within the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board JurisdictionSutton, Justin Corser, IV 01 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This master’s project was conducted under the direction of the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board (Water Board) to assist with augmenting their Basin Plan. An investigation of the current practices for identifying and managing groundwater recharge areas was conducted, and strategies for protecting water quality by managing land uses in groundwater recharge areas were developed. Data sources included a review of agency documents, websites, and maps; interviews with stakeholders, and literature research. Data from these sources provided the foundation on which to base strategies for maintaining and improving groundwater quality in the Central Coast Hydrologic Region. This project recommends standard language for groundwater recharge areas, minimum criteria for identifying and mapping these areas, and protection strategies. The Water Board must establish minimum standards to protect groundwater recharge areas, and collaborate with local agencies to protect the quality of groundwater throughout their jurisdiction.

Definition and Representation of Requirement Engineering/Management : A Process-Oriented ApproachLiaw, Judy-Audrey-Chui-Yik 11 May 2002 (has links)
Requirements are important in software development, product development, projects, processes, and systems. However, a review of the requirements literature indicates several problems. First, there is confusion between the terms ?requirements engineering? and ?requirements management.? Similarities and/or differences between the two terms are resolved through a literature review; resulting in comprehensive definitions of each term. Second, current literature recognizes the importance of requirements but offers few methodologies or solutions for defining and managing requirements. Hence, a flexible methodology or framework is provided for defining and managing requirements. Third, requirements methodologies are represented in various ways, each with their respective strengths and weaknesses. A tabular view and hybrid graphical view for representing the requirements process are provided.
