Deliberate Practice with Motivational Interviewing: Basic Helping Skills Among Novice Helpers

Vega, Angel Laurencio 02 April 2024 (has links) (PDF)
We examined the effects of deliberate practice (DP) in teaching motivational interviewing (MI) helping skills to 45 upper-level undergraduate students in a semester-long course using an experimental crossover waitlist design. Students participated in a three-hour MI skills workshop focused on open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries (OARS) and engaged in ongoing practice throughout the semester. Students video-recorded four skill demonstrations involving real-life changes with a volunteer client, addressing behavioral change. Pre- and post-workshop video recordings were analyzed to evaluate changes in reflective listening skills and the overall consistency of using MI OARS skills. The results revealed significant increases in reflections-to-questions ratio, consistency in using MI OARS skills, and decreased use of statements that were inconsistent with MI. Additionally, students reported increased learning and self-efficacy in using MI skills. These findings suggest that integrating DP into undergraduate courses enhances the frequency and proficiency of MI-helping skills among undergraduate students preparing for the helping professions. The practical implications extend to preparing students for graduate programs or careers in the helping professions. Public Significance: This study highlights the potential benefits of incorporating DP with MI in undergraduate courses. By using experiential methods to introduce students to MI and its principles, this approach may lay the foundation for developing greater confidence and a solid foundation for building advanced helping skills as novices prepare to enter graduate programs in the helping professions.

Sömn i relation till vandrande tankar : En kvantitativ kognitionsstudie om spontaneous och deliberate mind wandering / Sleep in relation to mind wandering : A quantitative cognitive study of spontaneous and deliberate mind wandering

Fransson, Amanda, Unger Frick, Ingrid January 2024 (has links)
Enkäten innehöll instrumenten The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Sleep Disturbance (PROMIS), mind wandering questionnaire (MWQ), Mind Wandering Spontaneous (MW-S) och Mind Wandering Deliberate (MW-D). / People tend to drift away in their thoughts for a large part of their waking hours regardless of what they are doing. Furthermore, the population exhibits insufficient sleep, which is crucial for cognitive ability and the health of individuals. The purpose of the study was to investigate sleep as a predictor of mind wandering, as well as special categories of spontaneous and deliberate mind wandering. Another aim was to investigate gender, age, studies and work as predictors of mind wandering, spontaneous and deliberate mind wandering. The first hypothesis was that sleep disturbances predict mind wandering. The second hypothesis was that sleep disturbances predict spontaneous mind wandering. The third hypothesis was that gender predicts a) mind wandering, b) spontaneous mind wandering and c) deliberate mind wandering. The fourth hypothesis was that age predicts spontaneous mind wandering. The study used quantitative methods with a convenience sample and snowball effect. The data collection took place with a digital self-assessment questionnaire and consisted of 201 participants. The survey contained the instruments The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Sleep Disturbance (PROMIS), mind wandering questionnaire (MWQ), Mind Wandering Spontaneous (MW-S) and Mind Wandering Deliberate (MW-D). The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The result provided support for the first, second and third hypothesis, however the fourth hypothesis was rejected. Sleep disturbances and gender predict mind wandering and spontaneous mind wandering. Studies and gender predict deliberate mind wandering. In contrast, age did not predict mind wandering. Overall, the study showed that sleep disorders are related to mind wandering, but only with regard to spontaneous mind wandering. Negative implications are associated with spontaneous mind wandering as it can lead to the individual feeling unhappy.

Alcohol and Deliberate Self-Harm: A Moderated Mediation Model including Pain Tolerance and Borderline Personality Features

Amadi, Suzanne C 04 May 2018 (has links)
Alcohol intoxication has been associated with deliberate self-harm (DSH). However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are poorly understood. The primary purpose of this study was to examine pain tolerance (PT) as a potential mechanism underlying the relationship between alcohol intoxication and DSH. The secondary aim was to determine if borderline personality (BPD) features moderate the mediational model. This model was tested using secondary data of 210 non-alcohol dependent men and women (Mage = 26; SD = 6.97) who consumed a drink containing sufficient alcohol to produce average blood alcohol concentration (BAC) ranging from .000 through .100. Participants then engaged in a validated laboratory self-harm task (The Self-Aggression Paradigm). Results supported the notion that PT mediates the relationship between BAC and DSH. BPD moderated the indirect path between PT and DSH but not BAC and PT. This effect was prominent for men versus women. Clinical implications and future directions are discussed.

Multiword Units at the Interface: Deliberate Learning and Implicit Knowledge Gains

Obermeier, Andrew Stanton January 2015 (has links)
Multiword units (MWUs) is a term used in the current study to broadly cover what second language acquisition (SLA) researchers refer to as collocations, conventional expressions, chunks, idioms, formulaic sequences, or other such terms, depending on their research perspective. They are ubiquitous in language and essential in both first language (L1) and second language (L2) acquisition. Although MWUs are typically learned implicitly while using language naturally in both of these types of acquisition, the current study is an investigation of whether they are acquired in implicit knowledge when they are learned explicitly in a process called deliberate paired association learning. In SLA research, it is widely accepted that explicit knowledge is developed consciously and implicit knowledge is developed subconsciously. It is also believed that there is little crossover from explicit learning to implicit knowledge. However, recent research has cast doubt on this assumption. In a series of priming experiments, Elgort (2007, 2011) demonstrated that the formal and semantic lexical representations of deliberately learned pseudowords were accessed fluently and integrated into the mental lexicon, convincing evidence that deliberately learned words are immediately acquired in implicit knowledge. The current study aimed to extend these findings to MWUs in a psycholinguistic experiment that tested for implicit knowledge gains resulting from deliberate learning. Participants’ response times (RTs) were measured in three ways, on two testing instruments. First, subconscious formal recognition processing was measured in a masked repetition priming lexical decision task. In the second instrument, a self-paced reading task, both formulaic sequencing and semantic association gains were measured. The experiment was a counterbalanced, within-subjects design; so all comparisons were between conditions on items. Results were analyzed in a repeated measures linear mixed-effects model with participants and items as crossed random effects. The dependent variable was RTs on target words. The primary independent variable was learning condition: half of the critical MWUs were learned and half of them were not. The secondary independent variable was MWU composition at two levels: literal and figurative. The masked priming lexical decision task results showed that priming effects increased especially for learned figurative MWUs, evidence that implicit knowledge gains were made on their formal and semantic lexical representations as a result of deliberate learning. Results of the self-paced reading task were analyzed from two perspectives, but were less conclusive with regard to the effects of deliberate learning. Regarding formulaic sequencing gains, literal MWUs showed the most evidence of acquisition, but this happened as a result of both incidental and deliberate learning. With regard to semantic associations, it was shown that deliberate learning had similar effects on both literal and figurative MWUs. However, a serendipitous finding from this aspect of the self-paced reading results showed clearly that literal MWUs reliably primed semantic associations and sentence processing more strongly than figurative MWUs did, both before and after deliberate learning. In sum, results revealed that the difficulties learners have with developing fluent processing of figurative MWUs can be lessened by deliberate learning. On the other hand, for literal MWUs incidental learning is adequate for incrementally developing representation strength. / Language Arts

Selbstvergiftung in der Akutmedizin: 2005-2012 / self-poisoning in the acute care medicine 2005-2012

Sorge, Martin 01 June 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Self-poisoning in the acute care medicine 2005–2012 Abstract Objective. To describe the trend of acute self-poisoning in the emergency and intensive care. Methods. Electronic charts of adults who presented to the emergency department of the University Hospital Leipzig with selfpoisoning following a suicide attempt (suicide group), intoxication (intoxication group), drug overdose for relief of pain or discomfort (drug overdose group) between 2005 and 2012 were analyzed. Results. 3533 adults (62.6 % males) were identified, with the yearly admissions increasing from 305 in 2005 to 624 in 2012. The admission rate in relation to the total emergency department admissions also increased, from 1.2 % in 2005 to 1.9 % in 2012. 31.7 % of the patients were younger than 25 years. The reasons for self-poisoning were suicide attempt (18.1 %), intoxication (76.8 %) and drug overdose (2.9 %). The reason could not be clearly classified in 80 patients. Psychotropic drugs were used in 71.6 % of suicide attempts, while alcohol was the sole cause of intoxication in 80.1 % of cases in the intoxication group. Self-poisoning using at least two substances was observed in 52.0 % of the suicide attempts, 10.3 % of those with intoxication and 29.7 % of those with drug overdose. While alcohol remains the most common cause of intoxication, there was a drastic increase in the consumption of cannabinoids, Crystal Meth and gamma-hydroxybutyrate in the years 2011 and 2012. ICU admission was necessary in 16.6 % of the cases. There were 22 deaths (0.6 % of the study population), of whom 15 were in the suicide group (2.3 %), four (0.15 %) in the intoxication group, and three in the not clearly classified group (3.8 %). Conclusion. Acute self-poisoning is an increasing medical issue. Psychotropic drugs remain the most common means of suicide attempt. Although alcohol intoxication is very frequent, intake of illicit drugs as the cause of emergency admission is increasing.

Teaching and learning linear programming in a grade ii multilingual mathematics class of English language learners: exploring the deliberate use of learners home language

Nkambule, Thulisile 08 July 2009 (has links)
This study investigated the deliberate use of learners‟ home languages in the teaching and learning of linear programming. The study involved a Grade 11 teacher and his Grade 11 multilingual learners in a township school in the East Rand. Data was collected through lesson observations for five consecutive days, reflective interview with teacher and clinical interview with two learners. Analysis of data revealed that the teacher used learners‟ home languages to probe learners‟ understanding of specific terms frequently used in linear programming concepts, for example terms such as, „at least‟ and „at most‟. Learners‟ responses suggest that they drew on their home languages for the meaning of these words. Learners explained the term „at least‟ in their home languages as „buncinci‟ in Isixhosa, „bonnyane‟ in Sesotho and Sepedi and „okungenani‟ in IsiZulu. Learners also used mathematical English term minimum to explain „at least‟ and maximum to explain „at most‟.

Constitution et assemblée régionales : Étude comparée des expériences française, italienne et espagnole / Constitution and regional assemblies : A comparative study of French, Italian and Spanish case

Beckerich-Davilma, Stéphanie 13 December 2014 (has links)
Within the French, Italian and Spanish Constitutions, the direct references to laws regulating regional assemblies are rare, yet determining. Regional autonomy in any of the three countries entails the existence of an assembly, having a representative nature and a deliberative character, regardless of whether the national state of the given country exists in a decentralized or regional form. The nature and internal rules of the regional assemblies are conditioned by the extent to which they are recognized in the constitutions of their respective countries. This comparative study examines the laws governing the regional assemblies, through the prism of constitutional law, and shows that their normative sources are structured by the Constitutions. Different principles of parliamentary law protect the assemblies' structural and functional autonomy, and serve as guarantees for the constitutional exigencies they are submitted to, no matter the value of the normative sources. The constitutions prescribe the minimum threshold for the level of harmonization between parliamentary and regional assembly laws. Yet, a regional assembly cannot be equated with the parliament of a unitary state, and as a consequence, the transposition of laws does not target the inherent principles of each assembly’s particular nature. Hence, there is also a maximum threshold of harmonization that cannot be exceeded. Further, regional assembly law may deviate from parliamentary law and take an innovative form in order to secure the assemblies' functions through the accommodation of their specificities. To give regional assemblies the means to exercise their functions, either through the application of rules governed by parliamentary law or by the creation of particular rules at the regional level, is to guarantee the regions' autonomy as defined by the Constitutions.
