Leadership development, identity, culture and context : a qualitative case study

Nedjati-Gilani, Parisa January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the impact and effects of a leadership development programme in-depth and over time. There has been a lack of attention given to understanding the impact of such interventions in the academic literature. Where studies do investigate the impact (s) of leadership development they tend to focus almost exclusively on positive outcomes or the achievement of pre-determined targets and tend to be short-term in focus. This research finds that there is also a shadow side of leadership development, defined as the unintended effects of leadership development programmes which can be counter-productive and dysfunctional. A longitudinal case study approach was adopted comprising documentary analysis, observation and interviews, the latter of which were conducted with multiple stakeholders at three different junctures in time during and beyond the length of the leadership development programme. Three conceptual dimensions of identity, organisational culture and organisational context were identified which together facilitated a multi-faceted understanding of the changing impact and effects of the leadership development programme over time. In conclusion this thesis makes both a theoretical and methodological contribution by adding a longitudinal, multi-level analysis and evaluation of leadership development, evidencing both positive and shadow impacts and effects.

Die Bedeutung von Idolen für Jugendliche der Dresdner Gothic-Szene

Lehmann, Sandra 03 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)
In this qualitative study the authoress researches the adoption of media attachment figures in the adolescence, focusing the inclusion of music idols in the lifeworld (Lebenswelt) of young goths. Her hypothesis is that for goths, in contrast to fans of musicians in other facets of popular culture, there are overarching value and lifestyle orientations. In her theoretical overview of the research field, the authoress describes adoption modes and also contemplates on the individual functions of stars concerning the way of coping with development tasks in adolescence – especially concerning the development of identity. After an exploring survey the main study is presented – a detailed case interpretation of an interview with an adolescent member of the goth scene of Dresden. This case study is interesting not only because of the biographical characteristics and difficult circumstances of life – the authoress also succeeds to demonstrate her hypothesis of the holistic usage of a music idol.

The relationship between substance abuse and identity development

Mester, Joshua J. 01 May 2011 (has links)
This research examined the relationship between substance use and identity variables. The sample consisted of 76 students undergraduate psychology students. Relationships were found between identity variables and both alcohol and marijuana usage. People with a foreclosed identity status tended to have the lowest rates of substance use, while people in the moratorium identity status tended to have the highest rates. The hypotheses that identity variables would predict substance usage above and beyond psychological adjustment, and that identity distress symptoms would predict substance use beyond other identity development variables alone, was mostly not confirmed. The strongest and most consistent predictor of substance use was age. Possible reasons for this relationship are discussed, and calls for further research into this as well as other mediators and moderators of the relationship between identity and substance use are suggested.

Junior to senior transition : understanding and facilitating the process

Pummell, Elizabeth K. L. January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to produce a substantive grounded theory of junior-to-senior transition and as a result of this work, to provide knowledge and guidance for coaches, sport psychologists and other personnel supporting young aspirant athletes. Underpinned by a social constructionist philosophy, the research programme was designed to capture and interpret the social world of the participants and to interpret the perceptions derived from their own lived experience of the transition. The thesis consists of three studies which, in a concatenated programme of research, are predicated one upon another. In order that understanding in social research can be advanced, the development of theory requires several rounds of fieldwork, analysis and publication (Stebbins, 1992,2006). Thus the building of theory took place over the initial two studies, the first of which involved the in-depth interviewing of nine participants from individual sports (M age = 24.5 years, S. D. = 4.3 years). As a consequence of this exercise, rich data were collected, depicting the participants' experiences of the juniorsenior transition. Grounded in these data, a preliminary model of junior-to-senior transition was constructed using Strauss and Corbin's (1998) guidelines for grounded theory analysis. More specifically, the resultant model revealed a cyclical process: of learning, identity development and progress at transition. Inception of the process is characterised by immersion in the post-transition environment during the pre-transition phase, in which significant observational learning occurs via the use of more senior role models. This process leads to the identification of discrepancies between the actual (or junior) and ideal (or senior) self. This promotes a period of adjustment in which the behaviours relevant to senior status are incorporated within the self, bringing about a sense of readiness, or ability to cope with the transition. In essence, the athletes had sought to structure their pre-transition environment to represent that which they would encounter post-transition, thereby generating stability for their self-identity. The modification of identity, through the adjustment of behaviours and roles, predicted a competitive breakthrough, at which point the athletes began to think about the subsequent step at senior level, and hence the cycle of immersion, learning and adjustment continued. The impact of postgraduate qualifications in medical education

Sethi, Ahsan January 2016 (has links)
Due to increasing societal demands, accountability and economic constraints, there has been a paradigm shift in the healthcare culture with a move to formally train medical educators. This has resulted in the professionalisation of medical education, with various development initiatives including postgraduate qualifications. The demand for these qualifications in medical education can be judged by the increase in providers, from 2 to 31 in the UK and from 7 to 124 worldwide over the last two decades. However, detailed information about the influence and effectiveness of such courses remains sparse. This study investigated the impact of postgraduate qualifications in medical education on graduates’ educational identities, practices and career progression. The study design is mixed methods using the explanatory model. The first study comprised of an online survey of graduates from the Centre for Medical Education, Dundee between 2008 and 2012. The data collected were sequentially explored in more depth through semi-structured interviews in the second study. To increase the range and scope of enquiry a third study was carried out, which involved a 10 month follow-up of a new cohort of face-to-face students (2013/14) through the course and to the workplace. The quantitative data were analysed using non-parametric statistics on SPSS 21, and constructivist grounded theory analysis was used for the qualitative data in ATLAS.ti 7. I found that a qualification in medical education enhances theoretical foundations in educational practices, with increased self-efficacy and engagement in scholarly activities. The qualification encourages transformational changes and epistemological development as a teacher, researcher, leader and learner. Many participants attributed their career progression to the qualification. The graduates were able to lead various educational changes in the workplace and they described substantial performance attainments. I also found their work environment and personal factors influenced the impact of these qualifications. A conceptual framework based on an increased understanding of the identity development of healthcare educators was also developed. This is the first study on the long-term effects of a degree-awarding course in medical education on healthcare professionals worldwide. The findings have implications for the educators, course directors, healthcare organisations and professionalisation of the speciality.

ADOPTIVBARN OCH FÖRÄLDRASKAP I FOKUS -

Ceder, Paola January 2008 (has links)

The aim with my work was to gain a deeper understanding of some adult adopted children’s experiences and reflections about which role parent ship plays for the adopted child’s development of identity. Following questions have been in focus: What does a working parent ship imply, seen from the perspective of adopted child? In which way can the development of identity for the adopted child be supported by a functional parent ship? Semi-structured interviews were carried out with the two following themes: Support and confirmation. The sample consisted of five foreign-adopted between the age of 18 and 37 years. The result showed that the major part of the interview had a common picture of what a functional parent ship should be in order for an adopted child to have a favourable development of the identity, namely to have an understanding of how it is to be adopted, as being the most important and the sole base for the parent-ship. The discussion concerned obstacles and possibilities for a functional parent ship regarding the adopted child’s development of identity.

Khan, Saera January 2020 (has links)
The aim of the thesis has been to analyse the book ‘The Whole Story of Half a Girl’ from the perspective of James Marcia’s identity theory and Peter Berger’s modernisation theory. The analysis focuses on 11-year-old Sonia's description of her upbringing with parents of two different religious faiths as a depiction of identity development. The research questions were as follows: - How can the portrayal of Sonia’s reflections about her identity in the book ‘The Whole Story of Half a Girl’ be understood based on James Marcia’s theory of identity status, particularly in relation to Marcia’s description of the developmental positions of moratorium and identity achievement? - How can the portrayal of Sonia’s reflections about her identity in the book ‘The Whole Story of Half a Girl’ be understood based on Peter Berger’s description of modern identity, particularly in relation to Berger’s description of relative openness and differentiation? The study was conducted using qualitative thematic analysis with an deductive approach. The conclusions show that the portrayal of Sonia in the book ‘The Whole Story of Half a Girl’ corresponds to the identity position of moratorium in James Marcia's theory of identity status. Peter Berger's theory of modern identity, on a more general level can create an understanding of the difficulty, but also risk, it can mean for Sonia's identity development in relation to her parents’ different religious faiths and backgrounds. The whole story of half a girl (Hiranandani 2012).
