Transcendental Meditation and Mormonism

Cherry, Gregory C. 01 January 1974 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis cites many of the parallels and differences between Mormonism and Transcendental Meditation (TM) philosophy as it is expounded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Areas explored include the following: (1) the technique of Transcendental Meditation as compared with notions of meditation within the Mormon tradition; (2) the issue of whether Transcendental Meditation is a religion; (3) reports of physical transformation as a result of TM and Mormonism; (4) a comparison of L.D.S. Church leaders' and Maharishi's views of America, the laws of the land, social order, modesty, drugs, and strict morality; (5) the ideas of inner and outer morality; (6) the idea of pure Intelligence in TM philosophy as compared with the doctrine of the Spirit of God in Mormonism; and (7) teachings concerning the purpose of life, evolution, and concepts of God.

Keeping the faith : Devotional images and text in the service of Catholic confessionalization and piety in late sixteenth and early seventeenth century Münster

2014 April 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between image and text in four devotional books printed in Münster Germany between 1589 and 1660, and shows how this relationship supported the Catholic confessionalization programs of the three prince-bishops of those years. These confessionalization strategies, though varied, all emphasized the reinforcement of religious conformity leading to the consolidation of the authority of the ecclesiastical and secular leadership of the prince-bishop. The success of the confessionalization strategies of the three prince-bishops through this medium were the result of three contributing factors. The first of these was the printer of the works, the Raesfeldt printing house, which held a printing monopoly from all three of the prince-bishops. The second factor was the Jesuits who were responsible for education and indoctrination in Münster and shaped a significant portion of this literature. The last contributing factor was the readers, a group with a relatively wide spectrum of abilities in literacy who bought, read, and exchanged the books. Among the readers were a significant number of women readers who took up the confessional message of these books, wound it into their devotional lives, and strove to perpetuate Catholic piety within their homes. Although conventional wisdom suggests that images played a minor role in such programs, images were crucial elements in the communication of Catholic orthodoxy. This thesis shows how images were an equal partner in the conveyance of a nuanced Catholic confessional message in which the text directed a specific Catholic viewing and reading experience. The majority of the images do not carry an intrinsic Catholic message but rather present a traditional visual vocabulary that established an unbroken lineage between the Catholic Church and the pre-Reformation Church. These images provided the standard recurring theme around which the confessionalization message of the text was fashioned. As a distinctly regional literature, these devotional works reveal a localized Catholic response to Protestant polemic. They give valuable insight into the influence of confessionalization programs on regional devotional practices. The lasting effects of these confessionalization programs are still visible in Münster’s Catholic character today.

'And the Word was made flesh' : the problem of the Incarnation in seventeenth-century devotional poetry

Sharpe, Jesse David January 2012 (has links)
In using the doctrine of the Incarnation as a lens to approach the devotional poetry of seventeenth-century Britain, ‘“And the Word was made flesh”: The Problem of the Incarnation in Seventeenth-Century Devotional Poetry' finds this central doctrine of Christianity to be a destabilising force in the religious controversies of the day. The fact that Roman Catholics, the Church of England, and Puritans all hold to the same belief in the Incarnation means that there is a central point of orthodoxy which allows poets from differing sects of Christianity to write devotional verse that is equally relevant for all churches. This creates a situation in which the more the writer focuses on the incarnate Jesus, the less ecclesiastically distinct their writings become and the more aware the reader is of how difficult it is to categorise poets by the sects of the day. The introduction historicises the doctrine of the Incarnation in Early Modern Europe through presenting statements of belief for the doctrine from reformers such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Huldryk Zwingli in addition to the Roman Catholic decrees of the Council of Trent and the Church of England's ‘39 Articles'. Additionally, there is a further focus on the Church of England provided through considering the writings of Richard Hooker and Lancelot Andrewes amongst others. In the ensuing chapters, the devotional poetry of John Donne, Aemilia Lanyer, George Herbert, Robert Herrick, and Richard Crashaw is discussed in regards to its use of the Incarnation and incarnational imagery in orthodox though diverse manners. Their use of words to appropriate the Word, and their embrace of the flesh as they approach the divine shows the elastic and problematic nature of a religion founded upon God becoming human and the mystery that the Church allows it to remain.

(re)Mettre la ville au monde. Permanence et renouveau social au miroir monographique du fait religieux populaire sévillan / (re) Put the city into the world. Permanence and social renewal in the monographic mirror of the popular Sevillian religious fact

Zwingelstein, Hélène 06 June 2017 (has links)
Seville, Spain's fourth largest city, constitutes an example of a « hybrid » contemporary society caught between modernity and memory. This thesis, aiming to be comparative and supported by a patient field immersion, questions the modalities of the renewal, the permanence and the stability of the city's identity, in the mirror of its popular religious phenomenon. The study first reveals the singularities of a relational tenet at work in the city : segmental and mediated, while also shaped as an extensible family. It then details the nature of the devotion shown to the multiple local images of Christ and the Virgin. Through their real presence, these images fit into a pattern of social interactions, with the links that unite them to people unfolding throughout a highly festive liturgical calendar. The research describes its main sequences. It also reveals the geopolitical action of the morphological changes created by this ceremonial periodicity in the city. Finally, beyond what bare eyes can perceive, the thesis questions more specifically some of the secrets in the local hermeneutics of the Paschal Mystery. An observation of the different stages of the sacrifice of Christ, and his ensuing invisible local resurrection, emotionally perceptible and progressive, indeed furthers an original principle of social renewal, ritually involving the living, their dead as well as the future generations to come. This thesis thus presents different aspects of the same local political-religious system, wherein the complex articulation of the whole cyclically orders power and authority, politics and imagery, all within one space of symbolic meaning.

This condition allowed them to advise and stay advising practices, representations anddiscourses of religion and religiosity. The starting point for the research were research experiences, which allowed the visuality about processuality of religion in the history of the region as well as of religion, manifested by Catholic religious practices, from oldest to most current. Stand out the rituals expressed in the many caves shrines and festivals that take place in places of worship across the region. The first two chapters were constructed to examine the nuances of the processes that historically established Catholicism as a religion in that hegemonic speciality, as well as its role in the reinvention of same after the 1940s - the "backwoods hillbilly" to "Brazilianized agricultural civilization". Thematizes it, in this sense, the political importance assumed by the Church in the communities that formed the region. To account for the action of the Church's power will be based on the analysis of theological and pedagogical discourses of the Church, present in documents such as the pastoral letters, magazine articles and newspapers. In this sense, we seek to understand both the inclusion of the institution on spiritual and political sense. The third phase will seek to realize the permanence and re - updates the practices of religiosity from the analysis of practices of piety and public places of Catholic worship in the region. Thematizes is, in this sense, the memories that circulate in such sites, which allow the flourishing of religious practices such as festivals and pilgrimages. From this research aims is reflect on the subjective and intersubjective dimensions that formed from the relationship between the Church and the faithful as those practicing their religion. To answer these questions launches hand to multiple references and sources, among these ecclesial discourses, witnessed experiments and analysis on the content of religious ritual and devotional practices / O objetivo desse estudo é investigar a historicidade da cultura religiosa católica no sudoeste do Paraná e como tais códigos culturais se tornaram hegemônicos na região.

: Immigranters upplevelser av hem- och tillhörighet / Integration in leisure time? : Immigrants' experiences of belonging

Birchman, Elinore January 2022 (has links)
