This thesis examines the relationship between Cypress Gardens and the state of Florida. Specifically, it focuses on how the creator of the park, Dick Pope, created his park after his own idealized vision of the state, and how he then promoted both his park and Florida as one and the same. The growth and later decline of Cypress Gardens follows trends in Florida's growth patterns and shifts in tourism. This study primarily uses a combination of newspaper sources and promotional pictures and other media from the park to explain how Pope attempted to make Cypress Gardens synonymous with Florida. In doing so, this paper presents a history of the park during the Pope family ownership (1935-1985), while also looking at the legacy of the park until 2004.

[pt] Esta tese investiga a configuração verbal, as estruturas narrativas e os tópicos temáticos recorrentes em alguns romances do autor norte-americano Philip K. Dick - The Man in the High Castle, Time Out of Joint e Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?- à luz de teorias literárias contemporâneas. É dada ênfase especial à problematização da subjetividade na elaboração do texto histórico a partir de uma abordagem construtivista dos processos de percepção da realidade. A escolha da obra de Dick se justifica pela crescente importância do escritor para os estudos não só da ficção científica, mas também para a investigação de técnicas narrativas específicas presentes tanto no discurso historiográfico quanto no discurso literário pós-moderno. Nessa perspectiva, a obra de Philip K. Dick ilustra múltiplos aspectos da sociedade contemporânea, dando-se destaque, entre outros, à objetificação da experiência humana e à musealização do presente. / [en] This thesis investigates the verbal configuration, the narrative structures and recurrent themes in some novels written by American author Philip K. Dick - The Man in the High Castle, Time Out of Joint and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - in the light of contemporary narrative theory. Emphasis is given to the analysis of the subjectivity present in the historical text and to the constructivist approach concerning the perception of reality. Dick`s work was chosen due to the growing importance of this author not only for the study of science fiction, but also for the investigation of narrative techniques present in the historiographic discourse and in the postmodern literary discourse. In this perspective, Philip Dick`s work illustrates different aspects of contemporary society, such as the objectification of human experience and the musealization of the present.

Esse estudo pretende analisar como o corpo está presente no texto literário tanto no que tange à sua expressão, assim como ao seu conteúdo. A partir da semiótica do discurso, que elabora a ideia de enunciação viva (nos moldes propostos por Jacques Fontanille), e da semiótica do vestígio, que explora a ideia de um enunciador corporificado (proposta pelo mesmo autor), cujo corpo deixa vestígios no texto, desejase entender as manifestações expressivas e figurativas do corpo no romance distópico de ficção científica Androides sonham com ovelhas elétricas? de Philip K. Dick. Acreditase que dentro do período histórico em que foi escrito, denominado de pós-moderno e pós-humano por alguns teóricos, e motivado por um rearranjo semiótico propiciado a partir da Segunda Guerra Mundial, que gerou um novo contexto para a produção de sentido, o sujeito e seu corpo sofreram transformações que se encontram como vestígios textuais e discursivos na obra analisada, através de esquemas corporais que orientam o seu andamento e figuração. O estudo tenta resgatar esse novo sujeito e corpo a partir da enunciação literária, e, levando em conta as estruturas axiológicas abstratas fundamentais do percurso do sentido, vida / morte e natureza / cultura, ambas ligadas ao corpo, explorar a discussão ética que a narrativa suscita. / This study aims to analyze the ways the body is present in the literary text, both with respect to its expression as well as its content. From the semiotics of discourse, which develops the idea of living discourse (as proposed by Jacques Fontanille), and the semiotics of trace, which explores the idea of an embodied enunciator (proposed by the same author), whose body leaves traces in the text, the study observes the expressive and figurative manifestations of the body in the dystopian science fiction novel Do androids dream of electric sheep? by Philip K. Dick. It is believed that within the historical period in which the novel was written, considered postmodern and posthuman by some theorists, and motivated by a semiotic rearrangement brought about since World War II, which has generated a new context for the production of meaning, the subject and his body have suffered transformations which can be seen as textual and discoursive traces left in the analyzed work, through body schemas that guide its progress and figuration. The study rescues this new subject and body from the literary text, and, taking into account the fundamental axiological abstract structures of the semiotic square life / death and nature / culture, both connected to the body, explores the ethical argument the narrative raises.

In dieser Arbeit wird die Wirkungs- und Entstehungsgeschichte des Schauspiels „Der Andere“ (1893) von Paul Lindau (1819-1839) untersucht. Der Fokus richtet sich auf die vielfältigen intertextuellen und intermedialen Verknüpfungen des Stückes, die sich über einen Zeitraum von 40 Jahren erstrecken. „Der Andere“ inszeniert einen Fall von Bewusstseinsspaltung, in welchem der Protagonist, ein angesehener Berliner Staatsanwalt, unwissentlich ein nächtliches Doppelleben führt und infolgedessen einen Einbruch in sein eigenes Haus begeht. Hier wird insbesondere den Wechselbeziehungen von medizinischen und medialen Diskursen nachgegangen, da „Der Andere“ nicht nur von nervenmedizinischer Seite als psychiatrischer Fall aufgegriffen, sondern 1913 unter Beteiligung Lindaus als erster deutscher 'Autorenfilm' und 1930 als erster Tonfilm Robert Wienes produziert worden ist. Während filmhistorische Untersuchungen den Befund der errungenen 'Feuilletonfähigkeit' des Stummfilmes festhielten, blieb das Interesse an dem Theaterstück von Seiten der Literaturwissenschaft bislang gering. Ihm war der Status als Vorlage beschieden, die aufgrund ihrer gespaltenen Hauptfigur Verbindungen zu Robert Louis Stevensons „Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde“ und Hippolyte Taines „De l'Intelligence“ herzustellen scheint, welche bis heute undifferenziert als zentrale Prätexte tradiert worden sind. Verfolgt man hingegen die Spur von weniger prominenten Prätexten, ergibt sich ein vollständigeres Bild. Es stellt sich heraus, dass Lindau eine wesentliche Anregung aus einer unter Pseudonym verfassten französischen Novelle bezog, die er selbst ins Deutsche übersetzte, und dass das Spaltungskonzept von „Der Andere“ diesem Prätext samt seiner Anlehnung an Hippolyte Taine folgt. Auch verweist die Novelle Jeanne Weills auf einen prominenten Fall des Mediziners Adrien Proust, dem Vater Marcel Prousts, der einen straffällig gewordenen Juristen hypnotisch behandelte. Die Diagnose alternierender Bewusstseinszustände führte in diesem Fall zur Annullierung des Schuldspruchs. Durch den Wechsel in das Medium Film konnten wiederum Verbindungen etabliert werden, die den Bezug auf diese Prätexte verlagerten, überschrieben und/oder aktualisierten. So zieht der Stummfilm als wissenschaftliche Rückversicherung allein die schon damals überholte Studie Taines heran, während die spätere Tonverfilmung das psychoanalytische Konzept Freuds als Erklärungsmuster anbietet. Die Untersuchung zeigt am Beispiel von „Der Andere“, dass mediale, literarische und psychologische Diskurse fest miteinander verwoben sind. Ideen und Konzepte zirkulieren zwischen ihnen, weshalb sich die Grenzen zwischen authentischen und fiktiven Fallgeschichten als durchlässig erweisen. Im Falle von „Der Andere“ setzten diese Austauschprozesse eine besonders hohe Produktivität frei.

An understanding of the influence of Shakespeare on the structure and language of Moby-Dick is important because the plays of Shakespeare gave Melville a sudden insight into the significance of form and because his absorption of Shakespearean rhetoric enabled him to solve a serious artistic problem. In Moby-Dick Melville wished to write a work of symbolic fiction which would have both epic scope and tragic depth, but his difficulty lay in finding a structural and stylistic method which would provide the amplitude necessary to epic and at the same time could achieve the compression and verbal economy necessary to tragedy. He solved this problem by learning from Shakespeare to create a multi-layered dramatic structure and to use a dramatic language which becomes one layer of that structure. In Shakespeare's greatest plays there is a virtual fusion of form and meaning, and it is this fusion which, in its greatest moments, the language of Moby-Dick achieves.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur lojala konsumenterna på apoteksmarknaden i Katrineholm är. Eventuella samband mellan kön och lojalitetstyp samt åldersgrupp och lojalitetstyp undersöktes även. För att uppnå syftet genomfördes en kvantitativ undersökning med hjälp av enkäter, där 240 svar samlades in. Konsumenterna delades in i de fyra lojalitetstyper som tas upp i Dick och Basus lojalitetsmodell. Analysen visar att kön inte spelar in i vilken lojalitetstyp individen tillhör. Åldersgruppstillhörighet har dock en signifikant påverkan.
