This thesis focuses on the traditional cultivation of an edible root species by Kwaxsistalla, Clan Chief Adam Dick, of the Qawadiliqalla Clan, of the Dzawada ēnuxw, a subgroup of Kwakwaka’wakw, occupying the Kingcome Inlet area on the Central Coast of British Columbia. Kwaxsistalla is a traditionally trained Clan Chief and potlatch speaker with recognized authority to share his detailed knowledge and experiences of his clan’s food production system. This research is centered on his Clan’s tekkillakw (estuarine salt marsh root garden) root gardens of the Kingcome River estuary, and the long-standing practices associated with the large-scale production of tleksem Pacific silverweed [Argentina egedii (Wormsk.) Rydb.; syn. Potentilla pacifica (L.) Howell.], is one of the four cultivated root species. Kwaxsistalla has shared his hands-on knowledge of how root garden cultivation fits into his family’s seasonal patterns of food production as well as detailed accounts of how to construct and use tools for cultivating, weeding, harvesting, and cooking estuarine roots. He has also provided information that has been instrumental in developing a model of aboriginal management of estuarine root gardens (Deur 2005). This thesis builds on Deur’s model by attempting to experimentally replicate tekkillakw management in order to better understand the management effect on the abundance, size, and flavour of Argentina egedii roots. Over the course of the 2008 growing season I randomly subjected 60 ¼ square meter patches of Kwaxsistalla’s fallow tekkillakw to either a “till” or “till + weed” treatment and allocated 30 similar patches as a control. I applied a roto-tilling treatment just prior to the growing season, a weeding treatment mid-summer, and harvested the roots near the end of the growing season. While the short duration of my study and use of a roto-tiller limit the inferential power of my results, I found that tilling and weeding significantly increased the abundance or A. egedii but significantly decreased the root size. Throughout the same 2008 field season I also collected root specimens for analysis of their bitter and sweet constituents and found (bitter) tannins concentrations to be highest in the late summer and lowest in the spring and fall. / Graduate

Today it is just as important to understand the content on social media platforms as the technology that are being used. With the help of technology the content does not need to be just words but can also be anything from videos to simple symbols. Taboo subjects like dick-pics are often swept under the rug as being too offensive to talk about. But if technology is to keep up with the content even the sensitive subjects need to be understood. Since anyone can send anything to anyone it is important to show how different people react. If the sender of a dick-pic thinks it is amusing, it is important to tell how the receiver may react. It can be a self-representation to send a dick-pic, just to show a new or a hidden side of oneself. It can also be a way to exercise power over another person as well as harassing the receiver with a sexual picture. But a dick-pic could also be just a joke sent to someone and a way of communicating with friends. This is a quantitative research with 120 participants answering a questionnaire which focused on sending and receiving dick-pics and the reason and reaction of sending dick-pics online. The study showed three main reasons for sending dick-pics and the reasons were categorised as following: language online, self-representation and power structures.

Ce mémoire porte sur l’étude de la stabilité de fréquence d’une horloge atomique à piégeage cohérent de population. Le cadre de cette étude est d’une part d’approfondir la connaissance du piégeage cohérent de population en cellule de vapeur et d’autre part de construire un prototype d’horloge démontrant une stabilité de fréquence à l’état de l’art des meilleures horloges compactes de laboratoire. Grâce à une interrogation impulsionnelle et un schéma d’excitation en polarisations linéaires et orthogonales, cette horloge présenterait une stabilité de fréquence relative nettement inférieure à 10^-13 à 1 s si elle était limitée par un bruit fondamental tel que le bruit de photon. Après une présentation du montage expérimental, la première partie de ce mémoire est consacrée à l’étude des différentes sources de bruit limitant la stabilité de fréquence court-terme. Le soin particulier donné à la modélisation, à la caractérisation expérimentale et à la réduction des transferts de bruit de fréquence de l’oscillateur local (effet Dick) et du bruit d’intensité du laser en bruit de fréquence de l’horloge, a permis de mesurer une stabilité de fréquence au niveau de 3.2x10^-13 à 1 s. Dans un deuxième temps une étude théorique et expérimentale du déplacement de fréquence micro-onde en fonction de la puissance laser est présentée. Au-delà de la mise en évidence du caractère clé de la déformation de la raie dans l’explication de ce déplacement, elle a posé les bases de la dernière partie de ce mémoire qui propose une méthode d’insensibilisation du déplacement de fréquence aux fluctuations de puissance. / This report refers to the frequency stability study of a compact clock using coherent population trapping. The frame of such a study is firstly to deal in depth with the understanding of the systematic effects affecting the frequency of a coherent population trapping resonance. A second goal is to build a state-of-the-art compact atomic clock. Because of a pulsed interrogation and laser beams linearly and orthogonally polarized, our prototype would present a fractional frequency stability distinctly below 10^-13 at 1 s integration if it was shot-noise limited. Further to a setup description, the first part of this report is devoted to study the noise sources which limit the short-term stability of the clock. A special attention has been paid to model, experiment and reduce the transfer of local oscillator frequency noise and of laser intensity noise to microwave frequency noise. It led to measure an interesting stability measurement at the level of 3.2x10^-13 at 1 s. An experimental and theoretical study of the frequency shift due to laser intensity fluctuation is then presented. Beyond the influence on this shift of dark resonance overlapping that has been enlighted, this study gives the basics to understand the insensibilization method of the frequency to power fluctuations presented in the last chapter.

A King Dyed Pink is Doomed to Die is a poetry collection concerned with cruelties waged against queer people—how even the most seemingly innocuous habits of cishet society proliferate a vast catalog of ongoing violence, from microaggressions to murder. Disrupting the accompanying complicity of silence (mine and others') involves not only invoking a propulsive "I" lyric (at once playful and elegiac, confessional and enraged, horny and ashamed) but also creating an unabashed mess of formal modes (theater, journalism, surrealism, visuality, 21st century technology) that, unlike heteronormativity, refuses tidy categorization. Death haunts these poems, whether it be a pigeon fatally dyed pink for a gender reveal party or a queer brutally murdered in a small Virginia town months before I moved there. As I metabolize the grief, rage, and despair resulting from past and current injustices, I turn to tender futurity: in this violent world, how can we—queers and accomplices—still cultivate pleasure and love? / Master of Fine Arts / A King Dyed Pink is Doomed to Die is a poetry collection that reckons with violence waged against queer people. How do even the most seemingly innocuous hetero habits perpetuate cruelty, whether it be big or small? At once horny and rageful, silly and elegiac, these poems draw from theater, journalism, surrealism, visuality, modern technology, and other modes to disrupt a culture of binaries and tidy categorizations. The specter of death haunts this book as much the tragedy of two actual ones: a pigeon fatally dyed pink for a gender reveal party and a queer brutally murdered in Blacksburg, Virginia, months before I moved there. Even as I reckon with nasty realities, I invoke tenderness in my hopes for the future: in this violent world, how can we—queers and accomplices—cultivate pleasure and love?

Ce mémoire présente les dernières avancées de l'horloge à réseau optique à atomes de Strontium du LNE-SYRTE. Après avoir passé en revue les différents types d'horloges optiques actuellement développées, l'accent est mis sur le concept d'horloge à réseau optique qui a d'abord été formulé dans le cadre d'une horloge à 87Sr utilisant la transition 1S0 - 3P0. Les particularités de cet atome sont présentées, notamment la notion de longueur d'onde magique de piégeage, ainsi que les performances qui sont envisageables pour une telle horloge. La deuxième partie présente les aspects expérimentaux, en insistant plus particulièrement sur le développement du laser ultra-stable qui est utilisé pour l'interrogation des atomes et qui représente un point central. Parmi les dernières améliorations, une phase de pompage optique et d'interrogation en présence d'un champ magnétique a été ajoutée au dispositif de manière à mieux déterminer l'effet Zeeman. Enfin, la dernière partie présente les résultats expérimentaux. La dernière évaluation de l'horloge à 87Sr a permis d'atteindre une exactitude de 2,6.10-15 et une mesure en accord au niveau de 10-15 avec une évaluation indépendante faite au JILA. D'autre part, suite à de récentes propositions théoriques, une mesure a également été effectuée en utilisant l'isotope bosonique 88Sr et en adaptant le dispositif expérimental, permettant d'obtenir la première évaluation pour ce type d'horloge, avec une exactitude de 7.10-14.

Student Number : 7639580 - MA research report - Faculty of Humanities / This research report explores the motif of the water journey as a metaphor for philosophical enquiry in Melville and Conrad by comparing Moby-Dick with Heart of Darkness, and Billy Budd, Sailor with Lord Jim. It takes as its starting-point M.H. Abrams’s essay, “Spiritual Travelers in Western Literature”, and adapts the typology which he introduces by identifying four different kinds of fictional journey, namely, the physical, the experiential, the narrative and the hermeneutic. By concentrating on a broadly-based semiotic approach to interpretation (while also allowing for other critical possibilities), it examines Melville and Conrad’s treatment of certain pivotal issues in metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. It compares the narrative strategies of the two authors and, by offering close readings of the four texts under discussion, it highlights the similarities and differences in the authors’ responses to a universe of teasing complexity, as well as exploring the reader’s engagement with such texts.
