The relevancy of not only the Web but also the digital libraries for the diverse branches of Science has stimulated researchers and scientific communities to search for integration solutions, interchange and semantic understanding about the contents that circulate in them. In the present scenary, a strong tendency is verified for the availability of digital contents and the lack of use of adequate patterns for the representation and description of those resources in digital environments, what is pointed by literature as a great concern for the scientific community and focused on this work as a problem of the research. In this context, the proposal of this research is to verify, in the scientific literature, the applicability and functionality of the technologies and instruments available as patterns of representation and description of content and form, in the ambit of digital libraries, with the objective of identifying and characterizing the use and the application of MarcOnt as a tool for the construction of forms of information representation for digital libraries at the present time, highlighting it as an instrument for describing the semantic aspects of the digital contents in these environments. As a methodology, the present work is characterized by being an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the subject, with which it is possible to obtain subsidies for a better and more detailed understanding and comprehension of MarcOnt and the technologies that are included in the ambit of digital libraries for the Semantic Web construction. As a result, it was attempted to demonstrate the application of the MarcOnt tool in a specific informational environment, the JeromeDL Semantic Digital Library, to analyze the fundamentals of Cataloguing the forms of representation of informational resources. That made us define the categories for the future analysis of the system comparing to the MARC21 metadata pattern.

Questions about digital information architecture, usability, digital preservation and accessibility were approached. The research was made in the websites of Brazilian Universities, firstly to identify the institutions which offered the Architecture and Urbanism course, focusing on postgraduate education. After identifying the offering, the research was done by analyzing the contents, storage and dissemination and access to information, these libraries. It was found that the digital libraries are increasingly and taking part of organizations and educational institutions focusing on the knowledge dissemination releasing digitally information that may be needed for institution or the individual. A monitoring was done over of the physical and computational restructuring of the Board of Studies and Research in Architecture and Urbanism (C?mara de Estudos e Pesquisa em Arquitetura e Urbanismo, CEPAU), from the Architecture and Urbanism Course of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), showing the need of installing a Digital Library to integrate the databases of PPGAU s research groups, which today remain independent, with no interface among themselves. The research chosen area was Architecture and Urbanism, because there is a gap and little documentation about digital libraries in this area / O objetivo deste estudo foi pesquisar o estado da arte das Bibliotecas digitais em Arquitetura e Urbanismo, nas Institui??es de Ensino Superior (IES) brasileiras, atrav?s de conceitua??es e mostrando a import?ncia das Bibliotecas digitais na divulga??o e agiliza??o na transfer?ncia de informa??es. Sistema de recomendação para bibliotecas digitais sob a perspectiva da web semântica / A recommender system to digital llibraries under semantic web perspective

Lopes, Giseli Rabello January 2007 (has links)
Currently, researchers and academics have been benefited by the expressive growth of web technologies, due to the possibility of publishing and accessing research results as soon as they are achieved. In order to avoid this difficulty, Recommender Systems have been proposed and developed. These systems intend to provide an alternative interface for information filtering and retrieval technologies, focusing on the prediction of items or information parts that are interesting and useful for the user. Therefore, Recommender Systems act based on information personalization, and the predictions are generally generated using each user’s profile. The personalization is related to the way the information and the provided services can be adjusted to the specific necessities of a user or community. This dissertation describes a Recommender System for scientific articles stored in digital libraries. This system is geared towards the Computer Science scientific community. Technologically, the proposed system was developed under the Semantic Web perspective, as it explores its emergent technologies such as: use of standard metadata for document description - Dublin Core, use of the XML standard for users’ profile description - Lattes Curriculum Vitae, and services and data providers (OAI) involved on the recommendations generation process. In addition, this work presents and discusses some experimental results; the experiments are based on quantitative and qualitative evaluations of recommendations generated by the system.

Toffoli, Ticiana Oniki, 1982- 20 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Ricardo da Silva Torres / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Computação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-20T03:10:49Z (GMT). These systems are used by specific communities to access digital objects of interest. Due to the creation of huge collections of heterogeneous data (in terms of type and format), some of these data are organized in digital complex objects, in the sense that they are composed by other digital objects. Since specification and implementation of digital libraries are decisive tasks to achieve an effective management of documents, specific software tools have been created to help and facilitate the specification and implementation of digital libraries. However, few existing tools used to model digital libraries allow the specification of complex objects. Besides, this kind of complex data make more difficult the tasks of specification, modeling, and reusing of complex objects. The objective of this dissertation was to propose a digital library metamodel in order to specify instances of digital libraries that manage complex objects. The new metamodel was included in the 5SGraph tool. 5SGraph is a software tool based on the 5S theory (Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, and Societies) and provides a visual environment for the formal specification of digital libraries. The new metamodel was validated through: case studies, an evaluation with potential users, and the implementation of a digital library prototype containing legal documents. According to the results, the extended 5SGraph tool can be used to specify digital libraries of complex objects. The main contributions of this work are: the characterization of legal documents as complex objects; the specification of a metamodel to be used in the specification of digital libraries of complex objects; the implementation of a metamodel in the 5SGraph tool, making the tool capable of specifying digital libraries of complex objects; the presentation of some case studies using the 5SGraph tool to specify complex objects of digital libraries; validation of the new metamodel in the 5SGraph with potential users; and the specification and implementation of a digital library prototype containing complex objects related to legal documents / Mestrado / Ciência da Computação / Mestre em Ciência da Computação

Usability Evaluation of Digital Library BTH a case study / Usability Evaluation av Digitala Bibliotek BTH en fallstudie

Ali, Muhammad Usman, Aasim, Muhammad January 2009 (has links)
Libraries have for hundreds of years been an important entity for every kind of institute, especially in the educational sector. So now it is an age of computers and internet. People are now using electronic resources to fulfill their needs and requirements of their life. Therefore libraries have also converted to computerized systems. People can access and use library resources just sitting at their computers by using the internet. This modern way of running a library has been called or given the name of digital libraries. Digital libraries are getting famous for flexibility of use and because more users can be facilitated at a time. As numbers of users are increasing, some issues relevant to interaction also arise while using digital libraries interface and utilizing its e-resources. In this thesis we evaluate usability factors and issues in digital libraries and the authors have taken as a case study the real time existing system of the digital library in BTH. This thesis report describes digital libraries and how users are being facilitated by them. Usability issues are also discussed relevant to digital libraries. Users have been the main source to evaluate and judge usability issues while interacting and using this digital library. The results obtained showed dis¬satisfaction of users regarding the usability evaluation of BTH:s digital library. The authors used usability evaluation techniques to evaluate functionality and services provided by the BTH digital library system interface. Moreover, based on the results of our case study, suggestions of improvement in BTH:s digital library are presented. Hopefully, these suggestions will help to make BTH digital library system more usable in an efficient and effective manner for users. / 0046-738956073 0046-738956073 0046-734956502

Information and knowledge management in support of legal research in a digital information environment

Du Plessis, Tanya 08 January 2009 (has links)
D. Litt. et Phil. / The main research question addressed by this study is whether the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has an effect on the practice of law, and specifically whether information and knowledge management affects the process of legal research. Various issues are considered in this regard, including what the concept of knowledge management (KM) entails in a law firm and what the current KM trends are in South African law firms. To this extent an investigation follows of the global trends in the application of ICTs for legal research purposes and what the specific applications are of KM in support of legal research. Furthermore, this study investigates how information technology applications and KM systems and strategies can support the legal research process and what the benefits of KM are to legal research. This entails a study of the unique characteristics of legal research in a digital information environment and of the challenges legal researchers face in a changing information environment. Subsequently the skills and tools that are required for effective digital legal research are discussed. This research also considers the effect the changing information environment has on the role of the legal information professional, which includes an investigation of the reasons why legal information professionals can and should support lawyers in their legal research activities. Specifically, this study considers the roles, skills and competencies of legal information professionals as knowledge managers, digital librarians and trainers of legal research skills in a changing information environment. Lastly, this study investigates whether current legal research skills training offers useful guidelines to future digital legal researchers.

A digital library for everyone? : Senior citizens information practices and attitudes toward the digital library

Swanström, Therese January 2021 (has links)
Public libraries of today consist of both physical and digitalized elements. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of how a group of users, senior citizens, relates to the digital parts of the library. An interview study was conducted with nine persons between 67 and 78 years of age, with the aim to better understand their experiences and thoughts on the subject. A more holistic scope is necessary to fully grasp the prerequisites that the senior citizens had to be able to use the digital library. Therefore, the access and use of information- and communication technology (ICT) in everyday life was approached.  The material from the interviews was analyzed through a thematic analysis of the content. The theoretical framework evolved around two models concerning the concepts of information, that is a model of information practices by Pamela J. McKenzie (2003) and a typology of information limits by Marzena Świgoń (2011).  The study concludes that the senior citizens had access to adequate digital equipment at their own disposal. Though the sample consisted of people with varied interest and time spent on ICT, they can all be regarded as participants in the digital arena. When the interviewees searched for digital content of interest, they described mostly active methods in searching and scanning the internet.  In relation to the digital library, reserving books in the digital catalogue and borrowing digital media was the functions most frequently used. For some, these where new practices that they had developed during the pandemic of covid-19. They often turned to other sources to seek digital support or develop digital skills. Information about the library was to a higher extent sought of using traditional sources and methods.  Overall, though perceived as useful in facilitating reading, the digital library appeared to play a peripheral role in the senior citizens’ information practices in their everyday life. However there seems to be a potential in further marketing the existing digital functions to the target group. In doing so hopefully the digital library can benefit senior citizens, both the digital active and beginners, to a higher extent.  This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Digitalization of library services as a magnifying factor towards improving public library services in Limpopo

Khanya, Itumeleng Aaron January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Information Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / The digitalisation of library services is concerned with ensuring that almost all systems used to render services are ICT incorporated. This is of utmost importance since we are moving towards the 4th industrial revolution. Public libraries need to upgrade their systems to ensure that the service rendered is digitalised. Failure to digitalise libraries may lead to public libraries being obsolete and library staff may lose their users. The purpose of this study is to examine the digitalisation of library services as a magnifying factor towards improving public library services in Limpopo public libraries. The quantitative research approach was used to conduct this study. The questionnaire was used to collect data from Limpopo public library staff population. Convenience sampling techniques were used to select libraries in all five districts in Limpopo Province, which are Capricorn, Mopani, Vhembe, Waterberg and Sekhukhune. The instrument used to collect data from all library staff was a self-administered questionnaire. Eighty-seven questionnaires were distributed, filled, interpreted and analysed. Findings revealed that the library staff have a positive attitude towards digitalisation. The study also found that library staff do have the necessary Information and Communication Technology skills. Most libraries lack ICT systems and operate under financial constraints. The study recommends that training should be implemented more than once a year in public libraries and that it should be relevant towards the library staff needs. The government should also finance libraries for promotional and maintenance of ICT systems to ensure that a positive attitude is held up high by the library staff.
