Lee Bontecou's Early Reliefs (1959-1965): A Critical and Contextual Analysis

American artist Lee Bontecou’s oeuvre is often described as difficult to categorize or “mysterious.” Her early work—a series of metal and canvas reliefs made between 1959 and 1965—is linked to a range of stylistic associations including such radically divergent movements as assemblage, minimalism and abstract expressionism. Alternately, contemporary art historian Mona Hadler cites a series of iconographic connections between Bontecou’s reliefs and the popular culture and politics of the late 1950’s and early ‘60s. Using historian Reinhardt Koselleck’s theorization of historical time where history is constituted by an amalgamation of “temporal layers” based on particular historical perspectives, this thesis will explore the varied stylistic associations of Bontecou’s early reliefs by investigating their artistic as well as social and political contexts. In doing so this thesis will demonstrate that these so-called “mysterious” forms were created and exhibited in relation to a several different historical perspectives or “temporal layers.”

Tweets Win Votes: A Persuasive Communication Perspective on Donald Trump’s Twitter Use During the 2016 US Presidential Election Campaign

Twitter, a microblogging platform, has been increasingly used as a tool for political election campaigns. In an attempt to persuade people to vote for them, candidates and political parties worldwide have begun to incorporate Twitter in their campaigns to disseminate campaign information, promote themselves, and mobilize voters. In the 2016 U.S presidential election, Donald Trump had actively utilized Twitter to promote his campaign and convince voters to support him, which helped him earn a strong presence and huge popularity on Twitter. Eventually Trump even successfully got elected as the 45th US president. Although the rise of Twitter in political campaigns has been studied by researches from different disciplines, there have been very few studies focusing on Donald Trump or his communication performance on social media in the 2016 US presidential campaign. Besides, it is found that there is a lack of studying candidates’ social media use from the perspective of persuasive communication. In order to reveal how Donald Trump was making use of Twitter to influence audiences’ attitudes, this paper will present a content analysis of Donald Trump’s Twitter use from the perspective of persuasive communication. Specifically, the study will investigate the characteristics of messages demonstrated from Donald Trump’s tweets, and examine whether his messages placed an emphasis on certain aspects. The aim of this study is to offer insights into Donald Trump’s Twitter use, particularly about his persuasive communication on Twitter during the political election campaign.

The main focus of this thesis is the American election of 2016 and how it was reported in four Swedish newspapers; Svenska Dagbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Aftonbladet. The theoretical approach is based on an analysis of news values, explaining what generally attracts the attention of media outlets, specifically newspapers. A quantitative content analysis shows that Donald Trump was by far the most reported presidential candidate in the leading Swedish newspapers. Hillary Clinton was more seldom reported about. All newspapers had strong strong arguments against Donald Trumps presidential candidature, but the support for Hillary Clinton was at the same time relatively weak.

The report was completed in addition to a Graduate Conducting Recital, taking place on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 3:00pm. The concert featured the Kansas State University Wind Ensemble and took place on the Kansas State University Campus in McCain Auditorium, the conductors were Andrew Feyes and Patrick Sullivan. Audio and video recordings of the conducted performance can be found within the K-State Research Exchange database. The following report includes three comprehensive Unit Studies or Teacher Research Guides found in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band book series. The report also includes three Tracz Analysis Grids, newly published in The Art of Interpretation of Band Music. The examined pieces are as follows. Full band works, Flight by Claude T. Recent studies have shown that skepticism about human-caused climate change has increased among people in Europe and the United States. Researchers have tried to examine the causes behind this trend. What some of the studies have found is that there could be connectivity between populistic and nationalistic ideologies and climate skepticism. The purpose of this study has been to, through an idea analysis, examine the American president Donald Trump to see what type of climate sceptic he is according to the typology created by Rahmstorf. Furthermore, the study seeks to understand if the scepticism could be linked to the theories of populism and nationalism. The study is based on interviews done by newspapers and tv-shows but also tweets written by Trump. The study found that Trump’s climate scepticism could be classified into all of Rhamstorf’s different levels of skepticism. It also found that Trump’s argumentation in the interviews and in his tweets could, in accordance with earlier research, be linked to populism and nationalism.

Etableringen av sociala medier har skapat ett nytt medielandskap där beslutsfattare och politiker kan kommunicera direkt med allmänheten. Donald J. Trump är en politiker som valt att kom- municera med sin publik via twitter. Han misstror traditionell medias förmåga att objektivt återge hans utsagor och underminerar journalistiken genom att använda begrepp som ’fake news’. Att en amerikansk presidenten twittrar är inget nytt fenomen men frekvensen och reto- riken i Donald J. Trumps tweets är något nytt. Dessa nya medievanor kan få konsekvenser inom flera sektorer inte minst på finansmarknaden. Vilken påverkan hans twittrande har på aktiemarknaden är frågan som behandlas i denna uppsats. Uppsatsens syfte är således att studera om Donald J. Trumps tweets påverkar Dow Jones In- dustrial Average (DJIA). Studien avgränsas till handelskriget mellan USA och Kina. Vidare avgränsas studien till en tidsperiod om ett år, från februari 2018 till februari 2019. Uppsatsen studerar enbart USA:s president Donald J. Trumps tweets. Studien genomförs genom event study som jämför normal returns innan händelsen (tweet) med den abnormal returns efter. Tweetsen är utvalda baserat på ett antal nyckelord som testas inom varaktighetsfönster på 5, 10, 15 och 20 minuter, vilket ger uttryck för hur länge effekten varar. Resultatet visar att 8 av 12 tweets har en statistisk signifikant påverkan på DJIA på antingen 1%, 5% eller 10% signifikansnivå. Studien tyder således att presidentens twittrande påverkar DJIA. Slutsatsen av studien är att Donald J. Trumps tweets utgör information som påverkar värde- ringen på aktiemarknaden (DJIA) och dess avkastning. Därför kan konstateras att sociala me- dier, såsom Twitter, är informationskällor som är högst väsentliga att följa för aktörer på finansmarknaden. Vidare får resultatet implikationer för rådande lagstiftning och regleringar, något som redan diskuteras i USA. Studier på området har varit svåra att finna varför vidare forsk- ning på området vore önskvärt.

You need Trump as much as Trump says you do : En kvalitativ fallstudie av Donald Trumps relation till evangeliska ledare under presidentvalet 2016

The US presidential election of 2016 between the republican Donald Trump and the democrat Hillary Clinton was special in the aspect of the fierce tone between the two candidates, largely by personal attacks and how the media to a large extent focused on this rather than political issues. Many evangelical leaders decided to endorse Trump, even though their earlier outspoken criticism toward Trumps previously controversial statements about women, immigrants and minorities. In six articles this case study examines how the authors from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal frame the relationship between Trump and evangelical leaders during the 2016 US election. This is done by using a framing analysis and the categories: actors, characteristics, motives and goals which help me to answer a couple of analysis questions and latter put it into context of Snow and Benfords (1988) three tasks of framing. In this way I can answer the first research question: ”How is the relationship between Donald Trump and the evangelical leaders represented in the selected cases and how can this be understood by using Snow and Benfords (1988) three tasks of framing; diagnostic, prognostic and motivational framing?” The second research question “How can the framing of the relationship between Trump and the evangelical leaders be understood according to Hjarvards (2012) theory medialization of religion with a focus on media as language?” visualizes the attitudes and the shaping of frames contained in the articles. The study concludes that the three tasks of framing help assign causation, identify reasons, strategies and solutions to the phenomenon that is framed by the authors of the articles, but also how Trump and evangelicals are framed by the authors to rationalize the defined measures. The results show that the authors of the articles mainly focus on Trumps motives and goals to gain support of evangelical leaders vice versa the leaders which want to gain ground and influence the politics Trump is going to convey. This can be seen in both NYT and the WSJ articles through the framing of Trump and his fierce tone toward Clinton and her campaign. It is also recurrent that the authors of the article describe how Trump uses a language aimed at the Christian right and its leaders to promise them to pursue a value-conservative policy that favor them.

The theoretical aspect and area of operation of these emerging disciplines are presented as well as the use of concepts from traditional psychoanalysis and, in an asymptomatic manner, winnicottian concepts. By introducing as of yet unanswered problems in this field, an attempt was made to show the most appropriate winnicottian concepts to illuminate these issues using indications made by Winnicott himself. Professional / patient and professor / student relationships are addressed underscoring that traditional psychoanalysis theories are not sufficient to help the professional in the treatment of individuals with body-related difficulties. The paradigmatic change operated by Winnicott in psychoanalysis and his re-description of the initial stages of primitive emotional development with an emphasis on the continuity of the being were pointed out as a new horizon for psychomotricity as well. At the same time, the constitution of somatic education was handled as an emerging discipline. Interdisciplinarity in and of itself was shown to be insufficient to handle the transposition of theories from one discipline to another or adequate as a methodological resource to examine the current stage of development of somatic education. The trajectory of the birth of a discipline was outlined using Thomas Kuhn s theories, which also helped to show the need to respect the historical development of theories. The Kuhnian concept of a discipline matrix was used to show an initial chart for the somatic education disciplinary matrix. The concept of body language was used as a link between the three disciplines studied revealing there are many compatible concepts between them and the need for a more in-depth investigation. The need for the disciplines in question to strengthen their theoretical aspects related to knowledge about primitive emotional development and the psychosomatic partnership to be used in somatopsychic and psychosomatic cases was ascertained. Winnicott s personal maturing theory was introduced as a perspective to be considered / Esta pesquisa trata de algumas contribuições do psicanalista e pediatra inglês Donald Woods Winnicott para o campo da psicomotricidade e da educação somática. É apresentado o quadro teórico e a área de atuação destas nascentes disciplinas ao lado do uso feito por elas de conceitos oriundos da psicanálise tradicional e de modo assistemático também de conceitos winnicottianos. Explicitando os problemas ainda sem resposta neste campo se buscou apresentar quais seriam os conceitos winnicottianos mais apropriados para iluminar essas questões a partir das indicações feitas pelo próprio Winnicott. São abordados aspectos do relacionamento profissional / paciente e professor / aluno destacando que as teorias da psicanálise tradicional não são suficientes para ajudar o profissional no trato de indivíduos com dificuldades relativas a seu corpo. Apontou-se que a mudança paradigmática operada por Winnicott na psicanálise e sua re-descrição dos estágios iniciais do desenvolvimento emocional primitivo com ênfase na continuidade de ser franqueou um novo horizonte também para as disciplinas deste estudo. Paralelamente tratou-se da constituição da educação somática como uma disciplina emergente. Foi colocado em evidência que a interdisciplinaridade por si só não dá conta da transposição de teorias de uma disciplina para outra nem se mostra adequada como recurso metodológico para examinar o estágio de desenvolvimento atual da educação somática. Traçou-se o percurso do nascimento de uma disciplina por intermédio das teorias de Thomas Kuhn que auxiliaram também a mostrar a necessidade de se respeitar o desenvolvimento histórico das teorias. O conceito kuhniano de paradigma serviu para iluminar um quadro inicial da matriz disciplinar da educação somática. Foi usado o conceito de imagem corporal como elo de ligação entre as três disciplinas estudadas mostrando-se que existem muitos conceitos compatíveis entre elas e a necessidade de serem aprofundados. Constatou-se a necessidade da educação somática fortalecer seu quadro teórico relativo aos conhecimentos sobre o desenvolvimento emocional primitivo e sobre a parceria psicossomática para atender os casos somatopsíquicos e psicossomáticos. A teoria do amadurecimento pessoal de Winnicott foi apresentada como uma perspectiva a ser considerada.

Adolescence is no longer understood only as a moment of remaking the conflicts from childhood, It´s considering also its particular and unprecedented issues. In addition, the variety of youth manifestations induce Clinic and institutions to be always alert to new forms of communication and sociability of this group. Following this perspective, this work investigates a youth tribe composed by adolescents who are fans of animês and mangás (Japanese cartoons and comics) and, by means of this group, understand more about game and playing in the period of adolescence. This works aims at investigating specificities that playing acquires in adolescence, assuming as main code the mangás, animês and games that arises from them, understanding it all as practices belonging to the same youth tribe - as well as investigate the ways the adolescent self can be manifested through these games. Thus, this study was arranged as a participant research. All the sources talks especially to the Winnicott theory regarding adolescence and playing. Through this research, it was possible to realize that, in the potential space constituted by these adolescents, we see sharing, communication, creation, establishment of relations and a continuous influence among different potential spaces, which extrapolates the area of the own tribe and ultimately influence the culture abroad its belonging. Thereby, it is possible to realize that the adolescents have the desire to occupy varied spaces and institutions of the city, to open themselves to other spaces to be habited on their own way. Fight, escape and flee are verbs quite recurrent in their games and show that It might be the best strategy for the construction of their own refuge. At the moment, the adolescent is in a serious fight against the subordination and he is constantly besieged by the question: "which refuge do people want me to build?" Connected to this, it is also present in the adolescent game a very important element: hope. Hope to be an author, hero and protagonist of their own history. Creating, building and dressing other linen, painting their hair, wearing different adornments, the adolescent says good bye to its childhood and debut in an adult world, motivated to escape a subordination imposed to him / Dentro da Psicologia, o tema da adolescência vem ganhando cada vez mais espaço nos últimos tempos e, consequentemente, a clínica tem sido modificada para compreender as demandas trazidas por esse grupo social. A adolescência vem deixando de ser entendida apenas como um momento de reedição dos conflitos da infância e passando a ser vista também com suas questões particulares e inéditas. Além disso, a própria variedade de expressões juvenis faz com que a clínica e as instituições precisem estar sempre atentas às novas formas de comunicação e sociabilidade deste grupo. Seguindo essa perspectiva, este trabalho procurou investigar uma tribo juvenil composta por adolescentes fãs de animês e mangás (desenhos animados e histórias em quadrinhos japoneses) e, por meio dela, conhecer um pouco sobre o jogo e o brincar neste momento da adolescência. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar as especificidades que o brincar adquire na adolescência tendo como chave de leitura os mangás, animês e os jogos decorrentes deles, entendendo-os como práticas pertencentes a uma mesma tribo juvenil, assim como investigar que feições do self adolescente podemos vislumbrar por meio desses jogos. Para isso, este estudo foi organizado a partir da modalidade de pesquisa participante e dialogou especialmente com o referencial teórico winnicottiano a respeito da adolescência e do jogo. Por meio desta investigação foi possível perceber que, no espaço potencial constituído por esses adolescentes, há compartilhamento, comunicação, criação, constituição de relações e um movimento de influência contínua entre diferentes espaços potenciais, o que acaba por extrapolar o limite da própria tribo e influencia a cultura mais ampla da qual ela faz parte. Com isso, é possível perceber ainda que os adolescentes possuem o desejo de ocupar variados espaços e instituições da cidade, para assim abrirem-se a outras realidades que devem ser habitadas ao seu modo. Lutar, escapar e fugir são verbos bastante recorrentes em seus jogos e mostram que neles estão as melhores estratégias para a construção de sua própria morada. Neste momento, o adolescente se vê em um sério combate com a submissão e está constantemente cercado pela pergunta: Que casa querem que eu construa? Acompanhado disso, é também presente no jogo adolescente um elemento muito importante: a esperança. Esperança em poder ser autor, herói e protagonista de sua própria história. Criando, construindo e vestindo outras roupas, pintando seus cabelos, colocando diferentes adereços, o adolescente despede-se da infância e estréia no mundo adulto motivado para escapar à submissão que lhe é imposta
