NEOLIBERALISM AND CASE MANAGERS' TOOLS AT A FEDERAL PUBLIC SERVICE AGENCY

Street, Heather 10 1900 (has links)

Abstract

Neoliberalism and the new managerialism have become entrenched in Canadian social policy. This paper is an examination of how neoliberal philosophy and the new managerialism are embodied in case managers’ tools. The setting for this research is Veterans Affairs Canada. Presently, Veterans Affairs Canada is in the process of transforming policy and practice. Veterans Affairs Canada has implemented a managerial business model as the foundation of its transformation initiative.

This research examines how the ruling relations of the macro level have infiltrated the local practice of case managers. Institutional ethnography is utilized to examine the texts used by case managers. It is important to research the relationship between case managers’ tools and managerialism in order to understand impacts on the role, practice and discretion of case managers. Only by having a full understanding of the relationship between the underlying power structures of neoliberalism and managerialism can social workers fully appreciate the negative impacts to client service. Through this understanding, social workers can more effectively advocate for their clients and find ways to implement change.
/ Master of Social Work (MSW)

Unconditioning Postmodernity: Radical Acts of Resistance in Contemporary Texts

WALTERS, TIMOTHY L. 11 1900 (has links)

This dissertation investigates several contemporary texts I can subversive defamiliarizations in which charn.cters take extreme measures in order to exist outside of the hegemonic limits of late-capitalist culture. It is my assertion that these texts are different to previous representations of counter-cultural resistance in important ways, precisely because of the wildly unusual methods necessarily adopted by their characters to evade a culture that seems to have become increasingly perverse and pervasive. Chapter 1 contains an introductory definition of subversive defamiliarizations and the specific cultural milieu which they interrogate. Chapter 2 is a consideration of Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club and David Fincher's t1lm adaptation, in which the anarchic protagonist instigates a broad range of extreme acts of resistance in an attempt to place himself ideologically outside of consumer culture. Chapter 3 discusses Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting and Danny Boyle's film version, which argue that the rules of modem existence have become so detrimental to the contemporary subject that even a potentially life threatening alternative lifestyle (heroin addiction) may be more rewarding. Chapter 4 examines Lars von Trier's Dogme95 film The Idiots, about a group of Danes who are united by the bizarre belief that "spassing," or pretending to be mentally retarded, constitutes a genuine critique ot~ and alternative to, late-capitalist life. Chapter 5 concludes this dissertation with a brief analysis of three novels--Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor and Bret Easton Ellis's Glamorama and American Psycho--subversive defamiliarizations that frame their critiques by presenting characters who completely immerse themselves in their culture's ideology. The critical function ofthese texts emerges because, in each case, an escalating surrender to, and absorption by, the dominant culture occurs simultaneously and causally with encroaching madness.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

And so they lived critical ever after : A literature study on how critical literacy can develop through texts that are relatable to students in primaryschool

Malmqvist, Elina, Pålsson, Elina January 2017 (has links)

Les divinités ophidiennes Nâou, Néhebkaou et le fonctionnement des "kaou" d'après les premiers corpus funéraires de l'Égypte ancienne / Nâou and Nehebkaou, ophidian deities, and the functioning pattern of the "kaou" according to the oldest funerary corpuses in ancient Egypt

Massiera, Magali 14 September 2013 (has links)
This PhD is a diachronic study, mainly focused on the Pyramid Texts and the Coffin Texts, of the two ophidian deities Nâou and Nehebkau. The texts highlight their relationship with the creator Rê-Atum and the other figures of the local theology. Their role in the judgement of the dead is obvious and well documented. Nehebkau is responsible for providing kaou to the deceased, once he has been justified. This concept, documented since the IInd Dynasty, seems to refer to both the funerary offering and to the deceased who benefits.

Professional and Non-Professional Written Travel Texts – Do They Have Common Features? : A Comparative Investigation on Travel Texts on Trysil, Norway

Ericsson, Stina January 2016 (has links)
This study aims to investigate possible distinctions between professional and non-professional written travel texts all treating the same destination: the Norwegian ski resort Trysil. The study will investigate to what extent the different texts correlate with the genre of travel texts, as the travel texts are treated as personal narratives, and how they conform to a given structure for narratives and with guidelines for professional writers. Furthermore, the investigation aims to explore to what extent there are similarities and differences between the texts regarding the given structure. The texts will first be analysed and organized separately by macrorules and a news schema that are constructed specifically for these sorts of texts, in order to reveal their discourse structure, and then compared to each other. As the discourse structure of the different texts is revealed, it is seen that there are certain differences between the two different text types. Finally, seen that the text types differ in their structure, this study will show that despite the fact that journalists write stories, and that non-professional written stories are narratives, they do not share the same structure, and are constructed in different ways.

Authentic texts or adapted texts - That is the question! The use of authentic and adapted texts in the study of English in two Swedish upper secondary schools and a study of student and teacher attitudes towards these texts

Daskalos, Konstantinos, Jellum Ling, Jeppe January 2006 (has links)
AbstractDaskalos, Konstantinos & Jellum Ling, Jeppe (2005)Authentic texts or adapted texts – That is the question! The use of authentic and adapted texts in the study of English in two Swedish upper secondary schools and a study of student and teacher attitudes towards these texts. Skolutveckling och ledarskap, Lärarutbildningen 60 p, Malmö HögskolaThe aim of this paper is to find out which attitudes teachers and students have towards authentic and adapted texts used in the teaching of English in two Swedish grammar schools. Furthermore, the paper aims to demonstrate the importance of proper text selection in relation to student motivation. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with second year students in two different schools; on top of this, several interviews were conducted with students as well as an interview with a teacher. This was done to demonstrate the different attitudes towards the textbook and authentic texts and to illustrate the importance of choosing topics that students can relate to.The results show that students preferred to read authentic texts. These texts provided them with interesting topics. The teacher also preferred to use authentic texts and agreed that authentic texts usually created an active classroom, but pointed out that to substitute the textbook entirely with authentic material was unrealistic. Therefore, a combination of the two types of text would be preferable.
