The long-term care decision making of older lesbians: a narrative analysisGabrielson, Marcena Lynn 01 May 2009 (has links)
This qualitative study used narrative analysis of interviews with 10 older lesbians (aged 55 and over) who have made a financial commitment to live in a continuous care retirement center (CCRC) specializing in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) care. The specific aims were to:
1. Describe what has impacted older lesbians' decisions to live in an LGBT-specific CCRC.
2. Describe factors that both positively and negatively impact older lesbians' perceptions of elder care. The study combined two qualitative strategies (across-case, thematic analysis and narrative analysis) and used a convenience sample.
Themes identified in across-case analysis were interpreted in the context of patterns in the narrative analysis. Categories, topics and subtopics were organized temporally. This within and across case strategy facilitated the ability to view the whole as well as individual and identify salient themes and representative stories across cases.
Stories of past negative experiences with family (resulting from the participants' sexual orientation) as well as past positive experiences within the gay community were widespread across cases. Presently, the participants are caring for older heterosexual family members and realizing that in their lesbian friendship circles they have experienced this type of care and support and not in their biological family relationships. Additionally, they are increasingly aware of their own aging and realizing that at some point they might not be able to support themselves and each other in ways that preserve their dignity and prevent discrimination, as they generally can now.
The participants' past experiences (as well as expectations stemming from them) coupled with present experiences and realizations, have led to the decision to live in an LGBT CCRC. They have concluded that the only way to be assured of dignity and respect in elder care is to decide on the LGBT CCRC. Positive perceptions regarding the decision to live in this elder care option were straightforward and directly reflected the findings for Aim I. It is important to understand older lesbians' elder care decision making because continued lack of knowledge may potentially undermine optimal care delivery of elder lesbians across settings.

An Ecological Survey of the Muskrat at Locomotive Springs, Box Elder County, Utah, 1950-51McCullough, Robert A. 01 May 1951 (has links)
The Locomotive Springs Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, located on the north shore of Great Salt Lake, Utah, is a state-owned area of about 12,000 acres. Six springs arise from the desert floor and flow south and south-east toward Great Salt Lake. The refuge encompasses these springs and their outflows. The area, while predominately vegetated by the Sarcobatus-Atriplex type, has 1,200 acres of open water and about 2,560 acres of marsh and stream-channel edges. The area was purchased by the State of Utah in 1934 with the express purpose of providing waterfowl hunting for the general public who could not afford to hunt on the privately owned duck clubs that encompassed much of the better waterfowl marsh areas of Great Salt Lake (Cook, 1932).

Cost of Producing Peaches in Washington County and Box Elder-Weber Area, 1947Allred, Wells M. 01 May 1947 (has links)
Peach production in Utah is an important enterprise. In 1946 the crop of 700,000 bushels was valued at $1,085,000, which was approximately one percent of the value of all agricultural commodities grown in the state. The estimate average annual production over the ten-year period, 1936 to 1945, was 636,000 bushels. About 95 percent of the peach trees are located in Washington county and along the Wasatch Front in Utah, Salt lake, Davis, Weber, and Box Elder counties. Small-scale family type units characterize the production of peaches in Utah. The 5,071 farmers who reported growing peach trees in 1944 had an average of 146 trees per farm. In the state, peach production is concentrated on well-drained open soils which require frequent irrigation. The usual practice is to disk several times during the growing season. Some operators leave the ground between the trees bare during the winter months, while others prefer to leave an undergrowth of clover, grass, or weeds. The enterprise is most successful if located where air currents protect the orchards from early spring frosts. In Utah the freestone varieties predominate. The Early and Late Elbertas are most common, followed by J. H. Hale, Late Crawford, Heath Cling, Rochester, Greensboro and other less popular varieties. Golden Jubilee and Halbertas were also found. Canning factories provide a market for a small portion of the peach crop, but most of them must be marketed fresh by peddling and at roadside stands or shipped out of the state through marketing associations and brokers. The competitive nature of agriculture makes it necessary for successful farmers to attempt to keep costs at a minimum. Present high production costs and the likelihood of lower prices for farm products in the future make this problem vitally important to Utah peach growers and to farmers in general. The purposes of this study are (1) to determine the unit cost of producing peaches in Utah and the items comprising the costs, and (2) to discover what methods of production are associated with success in the peach industry.

Biology of the Boxelder Bug in Cache ValleyAl-Tikrity, Arab Bakir 01 May 1952 (has links)
The Box Elder Bug, Leptocoria trivittatue (say), is a hanipterous insect belonging to the family corisidae. Although it rarely is a pest of agricultural crops, its habit of invading homes and other buildings for hibernation and to warm itself has made it an annoying household pest. It has proven to be a difficult insect to control. Only a few of the contact insecticides, useful in control of related insect pests, have given satisfactory control of the Boxelder Bug. Because it has not been considered a critical problem, it has not received detailed attention from the scientific investigators. Its close association with boxelder trees has long been recognized. Elimination of boxelder trees has often been advocated for control of this insect. However, boxelder is not its only host and, furthermore, elimination of boxelder trees is not always practical or desirable.

A Critical Survey of Elementary School Playgrounds in Cache and Box Elder CountiesCracas, Thomas 01 May 1958 (has links)
One of the fundamental needs of elementary school children is to develop their motor systems by means of physical activities adequately suited to their representative age groups. In so doing, opportunities are provided for sociological and psychological requirements essential in developing a healthy, confident individual capable and willing to accept social and family obligations and responsibilities. This infers that an essential function of the school is to provide appropriate areas, facilities, and equipment for such activities. It also suggests that the playground be an integral element of a modern school.

Tales by Moonlight: An Exploratory Analysis of the Effects of a Storytelling Interview Package for Youths and Elders in an Historically Black CommunityAkinwale, Oluwabukola Elizabeth 08 1900 (has links)
Storytelling is a practice that is used to pass down important information about culture, environment, and history. From a behavior analytic perspective, the process of storytelling involves contingencies and can be viewed within the framework of the Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior. For each listener, based on their history of learning and experiences, stories enable a unique type of learning about reinforcers, punishers and cultural context. In African American oral tradition, storytelling was and still is important in preserving the identity, safety, and wellbeing of African Americans. The purpose of this project was to inductively explore story telling between youth and elders in an African American community. A training workshop was developed that included an overview of the importance and role of storytelling in the black community and ways for youth to respectfully listen and learn from elders. The participants included two children and one elder. The independent variable was the training package, the dependent measures included the levels of synchronous engagement, the listener behaviors of the youth and the participant voices, that is, the descriptions and reflections of children and elders about the process and outcomes of this project. A multiple probes design across skills with in-vivo generalization check was used to observe the effects of a storytelling interview package to engage children with an elder in the community. The results of the project indicated that the project was beneficial and enjoyable for the participants. The extent to which this was a result of the workshop was not clear and suggestions are made for future directions. The findings are discussed in the context of measurement, meaning, and positionality.

Hur ledarskap påverkar personal under en omorganiseringKårlin, Carina, Stenling, Sofia January 2009 (has links)
<p>The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of leadership on co-workers during a re-organization. Our framing of the problem is based on a book written by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal (2007) <em>“Reframing organizations – artistry, choice and leadership” </em>and their four perspectives on leadership. The questions that our study is based on are:</p><ul type="disc"><li>What leadership perspective was characteristic for the chief of staff during the re-organization? </li><li>How did the employees experience the leadership of the chiefs during the re-organization?</li><li>In what way do the chiefs of staff feel that their leadership affected the employees during the re-organization?</li></ul><p> </p><p>To get a deeper understanding in this subject we conducted interviews with the two chiefs of staff and their employees in a small suburb to Stockholm, Sweden. In our background we described the history of the suburb and why this re-organization is taking place. Thereafter we account for research in this area of expertise. In chapter five we account for the four perspectives and organization culture. We analyzed our interviewed material from these four perspectives and organization culture. Thereafter we conducted a conclusion based on the analyzed material. We concluded that both chiefs of staff were influenced by all four perspectives and this influence had different impacts on their employees. One chief were influenced by a Human Resource-perspective and a perspective focusing on structure. The second chief was also influenced by a perspective focusing on structure but also the perspective that focuses on politics.</p>

The purpose was to describe nursing staffs’ perceptions of risks for malnutrition and preventive efforts thereof, for patients 70 years and older, at different care levels within one municipality. Descriptive design was used and twelve participants included; two district nurses, one physiotherapist and one occupational therapist from a health care centre, two registered nurses, one unit director<strong> </strong>and one physiotherapist from a nursing home in the municipality and four registered nurses from an internal medicine hospital ward. Interviews and qualitative content analysis was used resulting<strong> </strong>in four categories <em>Conditions of risks for malnutrition</em>, <em>Ensuring nutritional intake</em>, S<em>tructured way to work<strong> </strong></em>and <em>Collaboration and responsibilities</em>. The participants’ described diseases, disabilities and lost of apprehension concerning weight constituting malnutrition risks. Meals and meal environment influence nutritional intake. Risk assessments, interventions and evaluations mirrored structured way of working. Collaboration with colleagues, other professionals and care levels were highlighted together with responsibilities. Physicians’ participation in malnutrition preventions needs clarification. Improvements like documentation of the nutritional status among the elderly and reports between the different levels of care are needed to ensure safe nutritional care.</p><p> </p>

Spelmusik : Musikens funktioner i tre datorspelsserierCarlsson, Loke January 2007 (has links)
Tre olika spelserier analyseras i denna uppsats.

When I grow old I want to decide. : A study of user involvement in elder care in the community of Örebro.Eriksson, Margaretha, Eriksson, Charlotte, Karlsson, Anna January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze the written working material and public information documents on the basis of change for increased user involvement in terms of social care interventions and services in ordinary housing. We chose to study Örebro municipality and this through a qualitative approach in the form of a literature review. Our theoretical foundation consisted of the Social Services Act, Act on municipal authority to provide services to the elderly, the Act on freedom of choice system, salutogenic approach, Kasam and empowerment. Our results show that Örebro municipality has introduced four measures for enhanced user involvement. These are: change needs assessment, Act on municipal authority to provide services to older, the Service market with guides and the Act on freedom of choice system. We have also studied how Örebro municipality has chosen to apply the Act of freedom of choice system based on the legislator’s intentions. The conclusions we can draw from our study is that Örebro municipality has the ambition to achieve a greater user involvement of the elderly who have knowledge, power and energy to present the case. The elderly who do not possess these characteristics will need more extensive support and assistance from the municipality to achieve increased user involvement.</p>
