O exílio de si como metáfora de um mundo em fragmentação: um estudo sobre Elias Canetti

Souza, Maria Alice Timm de January 2014 (has links)

This way, the “psychic exile”, comdemns the person to a radical intimate weirdness feeling, where the world and the oneself unintelligibility prevails. From the psychoanalytic standpoint, this entity is called psychosis; from the current use of the language standpoint, it is called madness. Through a transversal cut in Elias Canetti biography, from the time the writer lived in and his relations to the German language, culture and literature, it is possible to identify in Peter Kien character and in the novel Auto de Fé, the points that support our hypothesis related to the “self exile”: that the use of the language that Canetti does, enables him to make a perfect representation of the psychic laceration that hits the novel protagonist, according to his relations to the world and to the other characters, as well as the subjective question fulfills the metaphor role of a world under fragmentation, not only from the one that was used as raw material for the work, also from the world today, that is nothing but the logical and direct consequence that was already announced at the beginning of the XX century.

Thus, the main purpose of this work is to relate the history of mathematics to some possible sociological factors involved in the XVII and XVIII centuries based on the concept of the civilizing process of Norbert Elias. For this, as a basis for a bibliographical research pertinent to the theme, we take the study model of the author Norbert Elias, in his work "The Civilizing Process", from the concepts of civilization, figuration and interdependence, to demonstrate the development of the History of Mathematics , Mainly in countries such as Germany, France and England, which were the study scenario to understand what would become civilization, as well as where several important mathematical contributions have been made today, such as those present in Newtonian physics, Algebraic treatment given by Descartes's geometry and Leibniz's formalism applied to the development of calculus. The facts listed in this study brought to the fore some mathematical contributions and their relations with the social contexts of their respective epochs.

Velocity Variations of the Kaskawulsh Glacier, Yukon Territory, 2009-2011

Darling, Samantha January 2012 (has links)
Laser altimetry and satellite gravity surveys indicate that the St Elias Icefields are currently losing mass and are among the largest non-polar sea level contributors in the world. However, a poor understanding of glacier dynamics in the region is a major hurdle in evaluating regional variations in ice motion and the relationship between changing surface conditions and ice flux. This study combines in-situ dGPS measurements and advanced Radarsat-2 (RS-2) processing techniques to determine daily and seasonal ice velocities for the Kaskawulsh Glacier from summer 2009 to summer 2011. Three permanent dGPS stations were installed along the centreline of the glacier in 2009, with an additional permanent station on the South Arm in 2010. The Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method is used to process the dGPS data using high accuracy orbital reconstruction. RS-2 imagery was acquired on a 24-day cycle from January to March 2010, and from October to March 2010-2011 in a combination of ultra-fine and fine beam modes. Seasonal velocity regimes are readily identifiable in the dGPS results, with distinct variations in both horizontal velocity and vertical motion. The Spring Regime consists of an annual peak in horizontal velocity that corresponds closely with the onset of the melt season and progresses up-glacier, following the onset of melt at each station. The Summer Regime sees variable horizontal velocity and vertical uplift, superimposed on a long-term decline in motion. The Fall Regime sees a gradual slowing at all stations with little variation in horizontal velocity or vertical position. Rapid but short accelerations lasting up to 10 days were seen in the Winter regimes in both 2010 and 2011, occurring at various times throughout each regime. These events initiated at the Upper Station and progress down-glacier at propagation speeds up to 16,380 m day-1 and were accompanied by vertical uplift lasting for similar periods. Three velocity maps, one from the winter of 2010 and two from the fall/winter of 2011, produced from speckle tracking were validated by comparison with dGPS velocity, surface flow direction, and bedrock areas of zero motion, with an average velocity error of 2.0% and average difference in orientation of 4.3º.

Regional Assessment of Glacier Motion in Kluane National Park, Yukon Territory

Waechter, Alexandra January 2013 (has links)
This project presents regional velocity measurements for the eastern portion of the St. Elias Mountains, including the entire glaciated area of Kluane National Park, derived from speckle tracking of Radarsat-2 imagery acquired in winter 2011 and 2012. This technique uses a cross-correlation approach to determine the displacement of the ‘speckle’ pattern of radar phase returns between two repeat-pass images. Further reconstruction of past velocities is performed on a selection of key glaciers using feature tracking of Landsat-5 imagery, allowing for the investigation of variability in glacier motion on interannual and decadal time scales. The results of the analysis showed that there is a strong velocity gradient across the region reflecting high accumulation rates on the Pacific-facing slope of the mountain range. These glaciers may have velocities an order of magnitude greater than glaciers of a similar size on the landward slope. Interannual variability was high, both in relation to surge events, of which a number were identified, and variation of other unknown controls on glacier motion. A long-term trend of velocity decrease was observed on the Kaskawulsh Glacier when comparing the results of this analysis to work carried out in the 1960s, the pattern of which is broadly congruent to measurements of surface elevation change over a similar period.

Art in Mozambique at the End of Socialism

Lima, Álvaro Luís January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes art in Mozambique during the country’s transition from Marxist-Leninism to a multi-party democracy (1984-1994). The end of the socialist regime elicited diverse responses from Mozambican artists and art institutions, all of which tried to reconsider the recent radical past to suit the new political conditions of liberalization at the end of the Cold War. Part I of the dissertation focuses on the 1980s rehabilitation of artist Malangatana Valente Ngwenya, one of the first and most important figures in African modernism. Malangatana’s image as a national artist will be discussed alongside the emergence of the collective of art critics known as Rhandzarte, and the reconsideration of the state’s narrative of national unity. Part II looks at the artist Naguib Elias Abdula as an example of the move away from state patronage towards reliance on the private sector. Following the wide changes in its artistic values, Mozambique was the first African country to create an institution to foster corporate collecting in a state-owned initiative known as Horizon Art Diffusion. Part III will focus on the rise of abstraction in the late 1980s and early 1990s. While figurative works of art had been the norm since independence, the increased visibility of abstraction at the end of socialism shook the foundations of the country’s aesthetics. On the one hand, some abstract works can be seen as radical interrogations of what had constituted Mozambican art until then. On the other hand, much of the momentum of abstraction was a product of the Ujamaa workshops, which were modelled on the Triangle Art Foundation. In its significantly different political and aesthetic reverberations, Mozambican abstraction appeared as a definite break from the socialist past.

Minns du Herr Kantarell? : En innehållsanalys av historiekulturen kring Elias Magnus Fries i svenska tidningsartiklar mellan 1970–2019 / Do you remember Mr. Chanterelle? : A content analysis of the cultural memory of Elias Magnus Fries in Swedish newspapers between 1970–2019

Knutsson, Sebastian January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyze the botanist Elias Magnus Fries legacy between 1970 until today. The focus is on the Swedish medias interest in Fries, as well as how he and his name has been utilized during this period. Departing from theories on history culture and uses of history, the Swedish national newspapers Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet are analyzed. The study shows when and how the memory of Elias Magnus Fries has been activated and portrayed in Swedish media, as well as if they used Fries as a kind of national symbol. During the 1970’s the interest was at its peak but dwindled after the 90’s probable due to the lack of jubilee celebration. Indeed, the interest of Fries peaked during the 70’s and 90’s because of celebrating the 100-year celebration of his death in 1878 and the 200 anniversary of his birth in 1794. Although, the general view of Fries persona always has been positive, rather scant attention har been devoted to Fries during the entire period and he was often only mentioned briefly. The interest was in general primarily on mushrooms rather than Fries, and it was always the mushrooms that spurred an interest in Fries rather than the other way around. This might indicate a rather weak position in the history of science within Swedish media. Nevertheless, the newspapers also depicted Fries as a kind of national educator, scientist and a person with a great an evolutionistic mind for his great interest in mushrooms and its introduction in the Swedish cuisine.

The Diaries of Mary Lois Walker Morris

Milewski, Melissa Lambert 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
An edited transcription of the 1879 to 1887 diaries of Mary Lois Walker Morris (1835-1919). Mary Lois, a plural wife in 19th century Utah, went in and out of hiding between 1885 and 1887 to protect her husband Elias Morris from prosecution for illegal cohabitation. Her daily diaries culminate with the court trial of her husband for illegal cohabitation in September 1887. At the trial, she testified falsely, stating that she had been separated from her husband since the beginning of 1883, when in fact the couple did not separate until May of 1885. As a result, her husband was acquitted. Mary Lois and her husband Elias Morris, a prominent builder and businessman, were in a levirate marriage. Mary Lois had married Elias's brother John in 1852 and came across the plains to Salt Lake City with him. In 1855, when John lay dying, Mary Lois promised him that she would marry his brother Elias and raise up children that would belong to John in the hereafter. John's brother Elias agreed and took Mary Lois as a plural wife in 1856. Together, they had eight children, including LDS apostle George Q. Morris and Nephi Morris, a member of the Utah state legislature. Mary Lois's diaries contain detailed information about her own and her children's church meeting attendance, her time as the president of the Salt Lake 15th Ward Primary Association, her work as a milliner, her attitude toward polygamy and her interactions with her husband and children. Her diaries also give evidence of a rich cultural life that included attendance at many plays and concerts and contain conversations and interaction with many LDS people in Salt Lake City at the time. She records information about courtship patterns, housecleaning, leisure activities, reading material and other aspects of daily life in 19th century Utah. In addition, Mary Lois gives political commentary on the anti-polygamy conflict occurring around her and records her own experience in hiding during the raid.

Immigranter i Sverige – Etablerade eller outsiders? : En kvalitativ studie om immigranters identitetsprocess och integration i det svenska samhället / Immigrants in Sweden - Etablished or Outsiders? : A qualitative study about immigrants identity process and integration in the Swedish society

Latifi, Fatime January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to get more knowledge about how the identification process for immigrants’ is going. We want to know how the identification process has developed for them since they moved to Sweden and if they have had any difficulties adapting to Swedish society. Furthermore, the purpose is to find out whether the Swedish society or the Swedish culture has been an obstacle for these immigrants. To fulfill the purpose of the study, we used semi-structured interviews where seven immigrants with different ethnicities participated. We also used a qualitative method and a narrative method analysis. We chose the sociological theorists Erving Goffman and Norbert Elias in this study. We chose Goffman's theory about stigma where he explains how people are stigmatized and categorized depending on their identity, culture or characteristics. We chose Elias' theory about the established and outsiders where he explains why there are established and outsiders and what causes these categorizations. The results showed us that the immigrants we interviewed are influenced by the Swedish society in their identity process. Although they feel that they have been motivated and want to be a part of the society, they experience that many immigrants are categorized in the same category because of stigma. This can lead to difficulties for other immigrants to integrate and they can experience difficulties as they are seen as outsiders and are not offered a chance in, for example, workplaces. This also affects the identity process as they do not get the chance to show that they have adapted well in the Swedish society.
