Analysis tools for the EMMA experiment

Räihä, T. (Tomi) 15 October 2012 (has links)
Abstract Cosmic rays are energetic particles traversing space that bombard Earth's atmosphere frequently and produce vast particle showers while interacting with air nuclei. The origin and composition of high-energy cosmic rays in the knee region (1015 - 1016 eV) of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum remain unclear despite of novel detection and analysis methods used in various surface and underground experiments. The understanding of the knee has improved from its first detection but still there is notable deviation in results between experiments depending on the used detection methods. The aim of the underground cosmic-ray experiment EMMA (Experiment with Multi-Muon Array) is to shed more light on the origin of the knee. EMMA is based on the idea to measure the lateral shape of high-energy muon component produced in cosmic-ray initiated particle showers on an event-by-event basis, that is, separately for each shower, offering a unique way to study the composition of cosmic rays in the knee region. The present work comprises the design, development and implementation of a comprehensive set of analysis tools for the EMMA experiment. It includes the development of the simulation program to generate realistic event data, the track reconstruction program ETANA to reconstruct hits and tracks in detector stations, the visualisation program EmmaEve to scan events, the graphical monitoring program EmmaDiagnosticsGUI to control the functionality of detectors on-line, the efficiency monitoring program to control chamber efficiencies in three-layer stations and the design of the EMMA database to store reconstruction results. Especially the design and tests of ETANA form the backbone of the present work as its optimised performance is crucial for the analysis of EMMA data. Furthermore, in the present work the influence of rock overburden above EMMA on the properties of high-energy muons is investigated by detailed simulations. The reconstruction of hits in drift chambers is studied with measured data including the estimation of the quality of reconstructed hits, the functionality of hit formation procedure and the influence of afterpulses on hit reconstruction. The validity of simulated data that are generated by the EMMA event generation program is evaluated by comparing simulated and measured data with each other. Finally, synergy benefits between the EMMA and ALICE experiments are discussed, which are both underground experiments but different in nature.

La Regenta: Osobnost Any Ozoresové / La Regenta: Ana Ozores' personality

Nejedlá, Marta January 2014 (has links)
The focus of this thesis lies on the outstanding Spanish realistic and naturalistic novel of the 19th century known as La Regenta by Leopoldo Alas "Clarin". The thesis is divided into two parts, the first is oriented towards historical and cultural context of the novel's origin, biography of the author and general introduction of the novel. The second part of the thesis concentrates on a main character Ana Ozores de Quintanar, mainly from psychological and sociological perspective. Sole chapter is then dedicated to comparison of novels La Regenta and Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and its main heroines. The primary aim of the thesis is to study the main character Ana Ozores, her gradual formation and to analyze her relationship with other key characters of the novel and factors which brought heroine's demise in the end.

De la coupure à la cicatrice, répétition, nomination et sinthome : Lecture de l'oeuvre d'Emma Santos / From the wound to the scar. Repetition, naming and sinthome : Reading of Emma Santos’s work

Polverel, Elsa 17 October 2013 (has links)
This thesis has for object the work of Emma Santos (1943-1983), French writer who wrote eight books during the seventies. The study tries to grasp, from her writing, the notion of « sinthome » devised by Jacques Lacan. Today, the work of Emma Santos, scarcely read and even less studied, stays very connected with the context of the emergence of feminism and the antipsychiatric movement, and is often read as the testimony of a woman confronted with confinement and « madness ». If we have chosen to take into account the influence of this context in the santosien books, we have mainly wanted to show how her writing acts as vital space, in which a work of cicatrization a physical and psychological wound can take place. One of the recurring themes in the books is the car accident she was in as a child, in which she had her throat cut: we suggest that her work acts as a psychic space to host the pain, and this body mark. The following can sum up the problematics organizing our work: how can writing make this cicatrization possible? Considering the writing process that we have synthesized under the name of assembling, we can emphasize different recurring systems, as auto quotation, rewriting, repetition. What can they reveal and teach us about « madness », its definitions, and language? The leading feeling of this study is that the singular writing practice of the writer allows her to apprehend the fracture and its symptomatic effects that alienated her from the world, as a « sinthome » that links her to the world. Thus this concept, analyzed though the santosien work, opens the way to a new apprehension of the language and its law, allowing to rethink the neurosis / psychosis distinction, as well as sexual difference.

”Han har diskhandskar. Rosa.” / “He’s wearing pink dish gloves.” An analysis of the love theme in the chick lit genre from the perspective of sociology of literature, Mossvikenfruar : Chansen by Emma Hamberg as an example.

Antonsson, Karin January 2007 (has links)
Libraries are often associated with positive values such as democracy and equal rights. The contents of the literature on offer should therefore be of great interest to the librarian, the supplier of said literature. The topic of this Master’s thesis is the popular literary genre known as chick lit. The purpose is to investigate the love theme in Swedish chick lit, and how it relates to Anthony Giddens’ theory on love in late modernity. The genre in this instance is represented by Mossvikenfruar: Chansen by Emma Hamberg. The theoretical anchor of the Master’s thesis is sociology of literature, which focuses on the relationship between literature and society. The starting point for the analysis of the love theme is Anthony Giddens’ theory on love and late modernity. A modified version of Shlomit Rimmon-Kenans thematical method is used as an analytical tool. The reality of love is considerably bleaker (albeit humourously described) in Mossvikenfruar: Chansen than in the writings of Giddens. The similarities, however, are great. The novel contains manifestations of ‘plastic sexuality’, set apart from reproduction, and the relationship between the novel’s protagonists can be seen as an example of Giddens’ description of couple-relationship in late modernity. Although the novel ends on a heteronormative, couple-centrered note which can be considered conservative and repressive, it is argued in this Master’s thesis that it must be valued in the light of the following question: “What constitutes an equal society?” a discussion which therefore concludes the study. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Handsnört resårhus kontra färdig spiralkärna

Hallén, Jane January 2008 (has links)
