The primary concern of this piece of work is to reconsider scientific realism debate in the philosophy of science. Accordingly, the overall aim is to come up with the clues of a viable scientific realist attitude in the face of anti-realist interpretations of scientific theories. To accomplish this aim, I make use of two modified versions of scientific realism, that is, &lsquo / epistemic structural realism&rsquo / and &lsquo / entity realism&rsquo / . Epistemic structural realism is a realist position of which proponents claim that the only knowable part of the reality is the structure of it which is expressed by the mathematical equations of our best scientific theories. On the other hand, according to entity realism, the only assured knowledge obtained from scientific theories is the existence of theoretical entities posited by these theories. I argue that a combination of the properly construed versions of these two positions might fulfill the afore-mentioned aim of this thesis.

This thesis examines perspectives of the two influential U.S. think tanks, the
Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations, on Turkish foreign
policy under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (JDP) from 2002
to 2010. It attempts to analyze the perceptions of the noted institutions about the
JDP&rsquo / s foreign policy by referencing their reports, articles, interviews and seminars.
The study had four aims. First, it aims to analyze the JDP&rsquo / s foreign policy in the
eyes of the two think tanks. Second, it shows the objective of the two institutions
for shaping the framework of the discussions on the United States-Turkey relations
and Turkish foreign policy by emphasizing the epistemic community. Third, this
thesis intends to clarify divergences and convergences in the perceptions of the two
think tanks. Fourth, it indicates the continuity, change and rupture in the JDP&rsquo / s
foreign policy choices from the viewpoint of the Brookings Institution and the
Council on Foreign Relations. Consequently, the thesis states that &ldquo / the given
framework&rdquo / in the relations between the United States and Turkey has been largely
determined by the U.S.&rsquo / activities.

A multi-fidelity analysis selection method using a constrained discrete optimization formulationStults, Ian Collier 17 August 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to develop a method for selecting the fidelity of contributing analyses in computer simulations. Model uncertainty is a significant component of result validity, yet it is neglected in most conceptual design studies. When it is considered, it is done so in only a limited fashion, and therefore brings the validity of selections made based on these results into question. Neglecting model uncertainty can potentially cause costly redesigns of concepts later in the design process or can even cause program cancellation. Rather than neglecting it, if one were to instead not only realize the model uncertainty in tools being used but also use this information to select the tools for a contributing analysis, studies could be conducted more efficiently and trust in results could be quantified. Methods for performing this are generally not rigorous or traceable, and in many cases the improvement and additional time spent performing enhanced calculations are washed out by less accurate calculations performed downstream. The intent of this research is to resolve this issue by providing a method that will minimize the amount of time spent conducting computer simulations while meeting accuracy and concept resolution requirements for results.

This research explores the annotation and note-taking practices of graduate students and reports on the sets of activities, habits, objects, tools and methods that define the practice. In particular, this empirical study focuses on understanding the integration of annotation practices within larger scholarly processes. This study therefore aims to describe and analyze annotation not only as material externalities of the research process, but also as crucial epistemic practices allowing students to progress from one research activity to the other. Interviews are supplemented by document collection and analyzed using a multi-perspectival framework. The findings describe an annotation lifecycle and suggest a new model of the scholarly process using annotation practices as units of analysis. The study further discusses annotation as a primitive epistemic practice and examines the productive tensions fostering the student’s progress towards her goals. This research finally proposes requirements for future tools supporting scholarly practice.

Realizations of Epistemic Modality in English and Lithuanian: Parameters of Equivalence / Episteminio modalumo ekvivalentiškumo parametrai anglų ir lietuvių kalboseŠolienė, Audronė 01 July 2013 (has links)
The thesis deals with epistemic modality and its realizations in English and Lithuanian. It focuses on the quantitative and qualitative parameters of equivalence between the lexical exponents of epistemic modality in the two languages. The axis of contrast is laid on the auxiliary and adverb strategies (van der Auwera et al. 2005): a probe is made into the cross-linguistic distribution and behavior of the central English modal auxiliaries of possibility and necessity and epistemic stance adverbials as opposed to their counterparts in Lithuanian. It is a contrastive analysis based on the data obtained from a self-compiled bi-directional parallel corpus of fiction texts and their translations into Lithuanian and English.
The findings show that, despite the existence of the same adverbial and verb strategies for epistemic meaning realization in the two languages, their implementation differs. Lithuanian shows a significantly higher frequency of adverbials as opposed to English. Due to the high degree of grammaticalization, English usually favors modal auxiliaries for expressing epistemic modality. The findings show that epistemic meaning can be determined by various constraints, the most important of which are complement stativity and subject specification. The analysis of the translational paradigm could suggest that the boundaries between low and high degree of probability can be blurred in Lithuanian. The War Within : Battling Polarization, Reductionism, and Superficiality - A critical analysis of truth-telling in war reportingMertens, Mayli January 2015 (has links)
This thesis analyzes specific challenges concerning 'truth-telling' war reporters face when reporting on international conflict. For this purpose truth is examined in accordance with journalistic principles outlined in codes of ethics, with a focus on objectivity and fairness. The aim is to discover ways to improve the application of principles, in order to battle epistemic errors and the effects they entail: polarization, reductionism, and superficiality. The study concludes that providing context and nuance is crucial, but that codes - although essential - are insufficient in helping journalists decide what is relevant and what is not. An approach in virtue ethics is recommended where phronesis (or practical wisdom) can inspire responsible journalists to comply with the spirit, rather than the letter of the principles.

Der Begriff ``Agent'' hat sich als eine sehr nützliche Abstraktion erwiesen, um verschiedene Problembereiche auf eine intuitive und natürliche Art und Weise zu konzeptualisieren. Intelligente Agenten haben daher Anwendung gefunden in verschiedenen Teilbereichen der Informatik. Zur Modellierung werden intelligente Agenten meist als intentionale Systeme aufgefaßt und mit Hilfe von mentalistischen Begriffen wie Wissen, Glauben (oder Überzeugung), Wunsch, Pflicht, Intention usw. beschrieben. Unter diesen mentalen Begriffen gehören die epistemischen Begriffe (d.h., Wissen und Glauben) zu den wichtigsten und wurden auch am intensivsten untersucht. Zur Modellierung von Wissen und Glauben werden in der Regel modale epistemische Logiken verwendet. Solche Systeme sind aber nicht geeignet, um ressourcenbeschränkte Agenten zu beschreiben, weil sie zu starke Annahmen bezüglich der Rationalität von Agenten machen. Zum Beispiel wird angenommen, daß Agenten alle logischen Wahrheiten sowie alle Konsequenzen seines Wissens kennen. Dieses Problem ist bekannt als das Problem der logischen Allwissenheit (``logical omniscience problem''). Da alle Agenten grundsätzlich nur über begrenzte Ressourcen (wie z.B. Zeit, Information, Speicherplatz) verfügen, können sie nur eine begrenzte Menge von Informationen verarbeiten. Daher müssen alternative Modelle entwickelt werden, um Agenten realistisch modellieren zu können (siehe Kapitel 2). Daß modale epistemische Logik für die Formalisierung des ressourcenbeschränkten Schließens (``resource-bounded reasoning'') nicht geeignet ist, wird als ein offenes Problem der Agententheorien anerkannt. Es gibt bisher aber keine brauchbaren Alternativen zur Modallogik. Die meisten Ansätze zur Lösung des logischen Allwissenheitsproblems versuchen, Wissen und Glauben mit Hilfe schwacher Modallogiken zu beschreiben. Solche Versuche sind nicht befriedigend, da sie eine willkürliche Einschränkung der Rationalität der Agenten zur Folge haben (siehe Kapitel 3). Mein Ziel ist es, einen Rahmen für das ressourcenbeschränktes Schließen über Wissen und Glauben zu entwickeln. Damit soll eine solide Grundlage für Theorien intelligenter Agenten geschaffen werden. Als Nebenergebnis wird das logische Allwissenheitsproblem auf eine sehr intuitive Art und Weise gelöst: obwohl Agenten rational sind und alle logischen Schlußregeln anwenden können, sind sie nicht logisch allwissend, weil ihnen nicht genügend Ressourcen zu Verfügung stehen, um alle logischen Konsequenzen ihres Wissens zu ziehen. Im Kapitel 4 wird eine Reihe von Logiken vorgestellt, die den Begriff des expliziten Wissens formalisieren. Es wird eine Lösung des Problems der logischen Allwissenheit der epistemischen Logik vorgeschlagen, die die Rationalität der Agenten nicht willkürlich einschränkt. Der Grundgedanke dabei ist der folgende. Ein Agent kennt die logischen Konsequenzen seines Wissens nur dann, wenn er sie tatsächlich hergeleitet hat. Wenn ein Agent alle Prämissen einer gültigen Schlußregel kennt, kennt er nicht notwendigerweise die Konklusion: er kennt sie nur nach der Anwendung der Regel. Wenn er den Schluß nicht ziehen kann, z.B. weil er nicht die notwendigen Ressourcen dazu hat, wird sein Wissen nicht um diese herleitbare Information erweitert. Die Herleitung neuer Informationen wird als die Ausführung mentaler Handlungen aufgefaßt. Mit Hilfe einer Variante der dynamischen Logik können diese Handlungen beschrieben werden. Im Kapitel 5 werden Systeme für das ressourcenbeschränkte Schließen über Wissen und Glauben entwickelt, die auch quantitative Bedingungen über die Verfügbarkeit von Ressourcen modellieren können. Mit Hilfe dieser Logiken können Situationen beschrieben werden, wo Agenten innerhalb einer bestimmten Zeitspanne entscheiden müssen, welche Handlungen sie ausführen sollen. Der Ansatz besteht darin, epistemische Logik mit Komplexitätstheorie zu verbinden. Mit Hilfe einer Komplexitätsanalyse kann ein Agent feststellen, ob ein bestimmtes Problem innerhalb vorgegebener Zeit lösbar ist. Auf der Grundlage dieses Wissens kann er dann die für die Situation geeignete Entscheidung treffen. Damit ist es gelungen, eine direkte Verbindung zwischen dem Wissen eines Agenten und der Verfügbarkeit seiner Ressourcen herzustellen. / One of the principal goals of agent theories is to describe realistic, implementable agents, that is, those which have actually been constructed or are at least in principle implementable. That goal cannot be reached if the inherent resource-boundedness of agents is not treated correctly. Since the modal approach to epistemic logic is not suited to formalize resource-bounded reasoning, the issue of resource-boundedness remains one of the main foundational problems of any agent theory that is developed on the basis of modal epistemic logic. My work is an attempt to provide theories of agency with a more adequate epistemic foundation. It aims at developing theories of mental concepts that make much more realistic assumptions about agents than other theories. The guiding principle of my theory is that the capacities attributed to agents must be empirically verifiable, that is, it must be possible to construct artificial agents which satisfy the specifications determined by the theory. As a consequence, the unrealistic assumption that agents have unlimited reasoning capacities must be rejected. To achieve the goal of describing resource-bounded agents accurately, the cost of reasoning must be taken seriously. In the thesis I have developed a framework for modeling the relationship between knowledge, reasoning, and the availability of resources. I have argued that the correct form of an axiom for epistemic logic should be: if an agent knows all premises of a valid inference rule and if he performs the right reasoning, then he will know the conclusion as well. Because reasoning requires resources, it cannot be safely assumed that the agent can compute his knowledge if he does not have enough resources to perform the required reasoning. I have demonstrated that on the basis of that idea, the problems of traditional approaches can be avoided and rich epistemic logics can be developed which can account adequately for our intuitions about knowledge.

Sobrecarga de informação no processo decisório: o papel da motivação epistêmica na resposta individual / Information overload in decision making: the role of epistemic motivation in personal responseAvelino, Ana Flávia Andrade 27 February 2015 (has links)
This study aimed to verify the influence of epistemic motivation in decision making. We addressed the following themes: decision-making, information overload; epistemic motivation; amount of information, satisfaction, and confusion. In order to achieve this purpose, we developed a task context in which it was possible to study multiple objectives in multiple scenarios, with the aid of a Multiple Criteria Decision Support System (MCDSS) and without the aid of a MDA. We carried out an experimental research in the laboratory using a decision task with multiple alternatives and criteria, with twenty-nine people divided into three experimental groups according to the number of attributes and alternatives. The task, which simulates the purchase of a bottle of wine for personal consumption, was structured in order to create a decision environment with the help of the MCDSS M-MACBETH or without it, by using the Think Aloud verbal protocol. After formulating and testing the hypotheses, we found that the effect of the information overload is not weaker for individuals with high epistemic motivation; the moderating effect of epistemic motivation was not weaker for the alternatives than for attributes; and individuals with low epistemic motivation did not notice the overload in the form of alternatives and attributes, resulting in dissatisfaction and/or confusion. Thus, we found no statistical evidence to confirm the hypotheses of this study. The discussion of the results reveals important particularities in decision-making process since participants had to choose, and people usually avoid or postpone their choices. By pointing to the role of complexity of information, a broader conception of choice is suggested. This broader perspective should allow forecasts which variables that can facilitate or hinder the emergence of effects of information overload. Regarding epistemic motivation, the findings do not reveal significant differences in the distributions of choices made according to different motivational conditions. This suggests that when faced with complex information, everyone makes the necessary effort, whether they are high or low in epistemic motivation; however, we emphasize that this topic needs further clarification. / Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar a influência da motivação epistêmica no processo decisório. Foram abordados os temas processo decisório; sobrecarga de informação; motivação epistêmica; quantidade de informações, satisfação e confusão. Para atingir o objetivo proposto, foi desenvolvida uma tarefa em que fosse possível estudar múltiplos objetivos em múltiplos cenários, com o auxílio de um Sistema Multicritério de Apoio à Decisão (SAD) e sem o auxílio de um SAD. Realizou-se uma pesquisa experimental em laboratório, utilizando-se uma tarefa decisória com múltiplas alternativas e critérios com vinte e nove sujeitos separados em três grupos experimentais, de acordo com a quantidade de atributos e alternativas. A tarefa, que simula a compra de uma garrafa de vinho para consumo próprio, foi estruturada com o intuito de criar um ambiente de decisão para a realização, com o auxílio do SAD M-MACBETH e sem o auxílio deste, sendo utilizado o protocolo verbal Think Aloud. Testando-se a hipótese, verificou-se que: o efeito da sobrecarga de informação não foi mais fraca para indivíduos com alta motivação epistêmica; o efeito moderador da motivação epistêmica não foi mais fraco nas alternativas do que para os atributos; e indivíduos com baixa motivação epistêmica não perceberam a sobrecarga na forma de alternativas e atributos, resultando em insatisfação e/ou confusão. Assim, não foram encontradas comprovações estatísticas para afirmar a hipótese deste estudo. A discussão dos resultados revela importantes particularidades no processo de decisão, uma vez que os participantes tiveram que escolher, enquanto as pessoas costumam evitar ou adiar a escolha. Ao apontar para o papel da complexidade de informação, é sugerida uma concepção mais ampla sobre a escolha. Tal perspectiva mais ampla deve permitir previsões de quais variáveis podem facilitar ou dificultar o surgimento de efeitos de sobrecarga de informações. Com relação à motivação epistêmica, os achados, neste estudo, não revelam diferenças significativas entre as distribuições das escolhas feitas de acordo com as diferentes condições motivacionais. Isso sugere que, quando confrontados com informações complexas, todos fazem o esforço necessário, independente de serem altos ou baixos na motivação epistêmica, destacando-se, porém, que esse tópico carece de um aprofundamento maior.
