Baumgarten.
passado.
Nesse sentido,
literatura brasileira do período colonial e, posteriormente, daquela produzida no
Brasil independente, demonstrando as transformações históricas, políticas e,
This research is linked to the project entitled “The literary historiography of
southern authorship”, coordinated by Professor Dr. Carlos Alexandre Baumgarten. In
this sense, the analysis of Brief history of the Brazilian literature, a text written by Erico
Verissimo in the 1940’s, is developed based on the principles of the Theory of History
of Literature. Although it was edited in 1945 by The Macmilhan Company, and, some
time later, reissued in 1969 by Greenwood Press, the book was released in Brazil only
in the 1990’s from a translation made by a group of researchers from PUCRS, under
orientation of Professor Dr. Maria da Glória Bordini.
The analysis of the literary historiography in question focuses, firstly, how
essential it is to emphasize the importance that studies in the History of Literature field
have been achieving, especially since the late 1960's. Research in this perspective also
become elementary precisely for recovering and disseminating a historiographical
production which, despite its importance, have spread through few researches in the
literary studies field. Moreover, it is vital to perform an investigation on significant
material to understand the process of writing the history of Brazilian and regional
literature.
After this, the vision that Erico Verissimo has of the Brazilian literature from the
colonial period is investigated, and, also, what he thinks about the country after its
independence from Portugal. The historical, political and, above all, social
transformations that then occurred are discussed. Their reflection on the national
literature have motivated a wider concern on modern authors, which has contributed for
the Brazilian literature to achieve its full growth, according to Erico. In addition to all
the determinations listed, this work is concerned in revealing the gaucho author's
sympathy for social aspects evident in the literature, because they would have a wider
importance, since they work as an instrument to the understanding of a difficult time in
humanity.
Although Erico's reflections do not constitute a new history of the Brazilian
literature, they reveal an unusual historical texture, if the marks of a difficult time in the
Brazilian and world's social structure are taken into consideration. Furthermore, his
creativity, his unique conversation, and his literary consciousness envision a new
horizon in our literary historiography, opening, therefore, space for innovative and
interesting ideas and debates concerning the literature of our country.

A imprensa como fonte de pesquisa e representação em O tempo e o vento, de Erico Verissimo: técnica de narrativa e implicações estéticas / The press as a source of research and representation in O tempo e o vento, by Erico Verissimo: narrative technique and aesthetics implicationsAlves, Márcio Miranda 02 October 2013 (has links)
This study examines the relationship between press and ficcion in the novel O tempo e o vento, by Erico Verissimo (1905-1975). As a source of research and literary representation, newspapers, magazines and almanacks are documents that help the writer in his project of writing about some of the most important events of the History in the nineteenth and twentieth century. The historical events are narrated through direct transposition of journalistic texts, exactly the way they were originally published, or through the research in other sources, but informed by narrator as being press cuttings. This characteristic of the literary work shows a constantly attempt to keep the balance between fact and fiction, whereby the truth of the novel increases as the narrative comes about with real topics of journalism. Besides, the relationship between press and novel appears also in fictional journalists and newspapers, elements that confirm the image of the press as a power which gives the direction to some events of the history. The research aims to examine the representation of the history that is done with press cuttings, as well as the representation of the press itself, with the purpose of spreading the knowledge about the process of writers literary creation and about the asthetics results that come from using journalistic sources in the fiction. The research methodology is to identify the signals of the press in the novel and to compare it with the content of the news, reports and advertisements published in the media, observing the editing method and the process of incorporation of the source into the narrative. The study is divided in four main historical themes, transformed into chapters, wich are the revolutions, the politics, the literature and the immigration. The subchapters are brief introductions to the historical event and to the perception of these events by the press, followed by others which are focused on the critical study of the corpus. It can be concluded from this comparative study that the writers fictional project, in its historical central axis, sustains itself largely with the information collected in old editions of newspapers, magazines and almanacks, wich have the function of legitimating fiction and ensure greater likelihood. The preference of the writer for the primary source in the composition of the novel reveals a peculiar narrative technique, certainly pioneer in Brazilian literature, and is directly related to the structure and the style of the novel.

Previous issue date: 2013-11-01 / Erico Veríssimo, who wrote O tempo e o vento, interrupted the cycle of his
masterpiece to write and publish Noite (1954), a novella. The work is placed in
a city at night, where all the degradations become possible. Therefore, the city
and the night are rather important in the novella mentioned because, through
the unity of both, the pilgrimage of a man who lost his memory takes place. This
study aims at investigating the functionality of the hostile place that the city at
night represents compared to the undergrounds of the protagonist’s mind, which
does not recognize where the city leads him to. Owing to this fact, he needs to
make an internal route towards himself to get close to his own identity. To carry
out this study, we rely on symbolic hermeneutics, Gilbert Durand’s theory of the
imaginary, mythology and psychology. In addition, we also use texts associated
to the narrative as a category and writers who discuss the city as a subject. The
novella on focus can be seen as a descent into the city pictured as a hell, a path
followed by the man without memory. By doing so, such man comes across an
urban “fauna” which is depicted as degraded and deformed. However, there is a
harmonica player dressed “in white” who, through his joyful music, brings the
hope of a new day and the return of light, which are symbolic represented by
the return of memory and normality. In the novella, the landscapes mirror the
characters’ internal lives, and this process triggers feelings and memories in
them. This process brings about the protagonist’s traumas which were
repressed in his childhood and are placed in his unconscious mind. Such
traumas need to be purged and overcome, so that the protagonist can achieve
a new life.
inicialmente desconhecido, perdeu a memória.

A ética do escritor. Noel, Tônio e Floriano: trajetórias distintas na obra de Érico Veríssimo / The ethic of the writer: distinct trajectories in the work of Erico VerissimoMoraes, Anita de 01 July 2011 (has links)
This thesis on the work of Erico Verissimo uses analysis and interpretation of the character-writers of Noel, Tônio Santiago, and Floriano Cambará in a series of representative novels from three times in this authors prose: the initial phase or Porto Alegre cycle (Caminhos cruzados [1935] and Um lugar ao sol [1937]), the transition stage (O resto é silêncio [1943]) and, finally, the stage of literary maturity (O arquipélago [1961-2]). Considering the relationships between the text and the context in which it was received and in which literary work is produced, an investigation was possible on how the author discusses the role of these characters within a vast fictional universe throughout his career, from a perspective that seeks to understand the connection between the authors trajectory and the world of his characters.

Erico Verissimo, escritor do mundo: cosmopolitismo e relações interamericanas / Erico Verissimo, writer of the world: cosmopolitanism and inter-American relationsMinchillo, Carlos Alberto Cortez 07 June 2013 (has links)
In this work I study three novels by Erico Verissimo in which the plot is set outside Brazil. Written over a period of twenty-seven years, Saga (1940), O senhor embaixador (1965) and O prisioneiro (1967) represent a cosmopolitan attitude that manifested early 9 in Verissimo\'s career, marking a significant departure from the hegemonic nationalist project in literary modernism in Brazil. His cosmopolitan openness, his work as an editor, his engagement in the public sphere as an intellectual, and certain other historical circumstances helped integrate Erico Verissimo into the mesh of Inter-American cultural affairs during and following World War II. This special position, converted into \"symbolic power\", promoted the translation of some of his works into English and allowed him to assume a prominent role as a \"cultural translator and interpreter\" between Brazil, United States and, to some extent, Hispanic America. In the frame of intellectual history, the study of critical reception, and literary analysis, I intend to understand the relation between Verissimo\'s international projection especially in the U.S. , thematic, formal, and ideological features of these three \"foreign\" novels and the critical reception of such texts. My aim is to discuss the changes that the cosmopolitanism and humanism of the author suffered over three decades of intense intellectual and artistic activity.
