Monitoring and representing of refugees in Swedish press : A study on differences and similarities between Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet in the monitoring and representation of refugees.

Baker, Akon January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to determine how much the Swedish morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter and the evening newspaper Aftonbladet wrote about refugees and how they represented them during refugee crisis in September 2015 compared with when the border control began in January 2016. The purpose is to investigate how the news selection is been made, what events surrounding refugees became news and how they are described To be able to answer these questions I have combined two methods. The quantitative method used to observe how many articles were written about refugees, count and analize the number of the articles each newspaper produced during the mentioned period. In the qualitative section the rhetorical method by Karlberg & Mral's model (1998) ethos, pathos and logos concepts been used. In order to understand how the writer structured the text to convince the audience. The findnings of this study has been compared by each other and the reulst has showen a compiling differences and similarities between Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. Both newspapers have different flow of news articles during different periods. At some stag in the refugee crisis period in September 2015 Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet has shown solidarity with the refugees, but during the border control period in January 2016 both newspapers monitoring and representation of refugees was not as positive and as much as during the refugee crises.

Twelve Representative Patterns of the Period 1920 through 1945

Swartz, Henry Charles 01 January 1977 (has links)
The twelve patterns presented in this collection represent the period 1920 through 1945. It is in no way a complete study of the period, but a representation of garments throughout this period in sketch and pattern form. The patterns presented are complete working patterns in full scale with no seams allowed. The garments have been dated according to research into the period. In addition to the pattern, sketch, and description of each garment, construction notes are included to aid in the building of these garments. Hopefully this collection will be useful for theatre costuming or where ever there is a need for authentic patterns of the period 1920 through 1945. The collection of patterns will be housed in the Department of Theatre's costume shop. The garments studied in this collection were obtained from the Virginia Commonwealth University Apparel Museum, Fashion Design Department. My sincere thanks to Alex Bodea, Department Chairman for his help and support.

Ly, Monia January 2009 (has links)
It requires a mutual relationship between the parties. The purpose of this study was to illuminate newspaper legitimacy in relation to media content. The study used a qualitative approach and comprised two case studies, one morning- newspaper and one evening paper, which were the Göteborgs-Posten and the Göteborgs-Tidningen. The main theoretical issues concerning legitimacy were the definitions of legitimacy, impacts, factors of high and low credibility, news components and agenda setting. The conclusion was that both newspapers shared a degree of legitimacy, but with different implications. Neither the morning nor the evening paper seemed to believe whole-heartedly in objective information.</p>

Codified into the word : the intersections of language and violence in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian

Hagan, Matthew T. 14 February 2012 (has links)
In this thesis I argue that Cormac McCarthy's 1985 novel Blood Meridian serves as a critique of the American Western mythos by collapsing aspects of myth, ideology, and the sublime into the question of violence's relationship to language. In explicating the novel, I demonstrate how the ironies staged between the character of the kid and the novel's narrator and the ironies represented in the language and characterization of Judge Holden reveal McCarthy's critique by pointing toward the violence inherent in the language of myth. Along with this discussion of myth and ideology, I also analyze how the figuring of violence as sublime in the novel gets coupled with moments where characters exhibit either an unconscious desire for language or a marked absence of language. The significance of these moments, I contend, extends McCarthy's critique of the American mythos by undermining the Western genre's trope of the stoic hero while also exposing the ways in which the novel draws together the nature of language and the nature of violence. Blood Meridian thus serves not as a libratory revisionist critique that seeks to re-write the American mythos but as a much darker meditation on the ubiquity of violence—a violence that manifests itself all too often in textual form. / Graduation date: 2012

Fonseca, Luciana Marson January 2006 (has links)
This is a comparative study between two areas of night entertainment, located in two very different neigbourhoods in the city of Porto Alegre: the rather aristocratic Moinhos de Vento and the old popular, bohemian, and at the present very fashionable Cidade Baixa. At its starting point lies the interest in looking for the reasons behind the migration of costumers from Moinhos de Vento toward bars and other similar places in Cidade Baixa, that has been taken place of late. The study works with both social and spatial variables, looking for relations between the socio economic profile of habitués and migrants, the spatial settings where their interaction takes place and their patterns of socio-spatial behaviour– which places they tend to choose, the reasons for that, if they use to go there by themselves or in groups, if they like to be inside or outside the bars, and so on. In order to do that four differentiated sub-areas were identified in each neigbourhood, according to the kind of entertainment, locals and types of customers they offer. Data evidence shows that the socioeconomic profile as well as the spatial choices and behaviour of habitués and migrants from both neirbourhoods present no such differences so as to account for the migration from the aristocratic Moinhos de Vento toward the underground scene of Cidade Baixa. Nevertheless, it seems that the degree of homogeneity in the options for entertainment in Moinhos de Vento in comparison to the multiplicity of choices in Cidade Baixa, pointed out to diversity as the possible main factor behind the migratory movement.

Encontros de ensino de História como espaçostempo de pesquisa: o professor-pesquisador e o estudante-pesquisador nos cotidianos escolares / History teaching as research spaces-time meetings: the teacher-researcher and the student-researcher in school routine

Joana Ribeiro dos Santos 03 May 2012 (has links)
This text is the result of some meetings. Classroom meetings, History meetings, discussion meetings, life meetings. Those meetings produced some new threads, which have woven together and joined a net that associated questions about school routine, History teaching, teachers training, evening school and research in the classroom. The aim was to understand if school is a research time-space and if pupils are researcher-students and also if teachers are researcher-teachers. By the conclusion of the research, developed in an evening public school in Rio de Janeiro, we could share the daily experiences of its practitioners and discuss if school provides research actions among students, and also if it tries to develop activities from the pupils interest. The school is a research place and we are researcher-students and researcher-teachers, even though, in many circumstances, school, as it is organized, under various internal and external pressures, such as, for instance, the failure in teachers training and the teaching public politics, denies pupils interests. In this kind of organization, students are not able to recognize themselves as conductors of their own learning-teaching process, researcher students and teachers. It is the research experience, from activities which stimulate students to make choices, search for information, analyze and criticize them, organize their thought, appropriate themselves of the gathered acknowledgment and have a position in society, changing themselves, the final result will be the critical citizens, who should be educated under the assistance of school and History teaching.
