Examining the experiences of students enrolled in small community colleges by time of enrollment

Head, Traci Lynn, 1969- 29 August 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of students enrolled in small community colleges to determine if there was a difference in the degree to which students were engaged based upon their primary enrollment in day or in evening courses. Specifically, the study investigated the amount of time and effort students dedicated to their academic pursuits and the degree to which institutional policies and practices supported them in their efforts to determine whether time of enrollment was a significant factor in predicting engagement. The primary goals of the study were to contribute to the understanding of students' experiences and to provide empirical evidence that might serve as the foundation for program development and reform. The findings from the quantitative analysis revealed a significant predictive relationship between time of enrollment and five of the fourteen engagement variables considered in the study. Enrollment in evening courses was linked to lower levels of engagement in each of these five areas: student effort, academic challenge, support for learners, academic preparation, and school opinions. The results of the study supported the development of a theoretical model that depicts student engagement based upon primary enrollment in evening courses. The model places support for learners at the forefront. Students' opinions are the end result, with each of the other engagement variables being affected by the levels of support perceived by evening students.

Four Evening Service Settings of Joel Martinson: An American's Contribution to Anglican Evensong Repertoire

Gordon, Gary (Gary Adrian) 05 1900 (has links)
The Evening Service settings of great British composers like Charles Stanford, A. Herbert Brewer, Charles Wood and Herbert Howells are well known and performed often throughout the world. However, little is known about the body of settings created by American composers. There are currently approximately 75 American composers dating from 1890 to the present, with Evening Service settings in print. Joel Martinson, based in Dallas, Texas, is an American composer, church musician, concert organist, and presenter. Although Martinson has composed four Evening Service settings (Evening Service for the St. Mark's School 1996, Evening Service for the Incarnation 2000, Evening Service for Church of the Nativity 2002, and Evening Service for the Transfiguration 2015), these works are not widely known outside of Dallas and small Anglican circles, nor is the value of his contributions to Anglican Evensong repertoire recognized. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Martinson's four settings make a valuable American contribution to Anglican repertoire through his neo-classical style and creative counterpoint. The four settings are modern and challenging but remain approachable for both choir and audience.

Kvinnorna i flyktingkrisen : En kritisk diskursanalys om hur svenska kvällstidningar framställer kvinnor på flykt

Camuz, Sevgi, Lernstål, Anton January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the Swedish tabloid press represent women refugees in the news coverage of the european refugee crisis.  The main question was: How are women refugees represented in the tabloid press news stories about the refugee crisis? To approach our question we used a critical discourse analysis. We examined a total of 17 news stories published during the first two weeks in September 2015, all of them published in Aftonbladet, Expressen, GT or Kvällsposten. During the analysis a total of four discursive themes emerged: The strong refugee woman, the weak refugee woman, the invisible refugee woman and the refugee woman as a mother figure. Three of our themes – the weak refugee woman, the invisible refugee woman and the refugee woman as a mother figure – are examples of how old ideologies about refugees and women still are present in the Swedish evening papers of today. These constructions  are based on myths and historical stereotypes.  Even though the refugee woman commonly are described as weak, subordinated and inactive, she can also be described as strong and independent – the strong refugee woman. This, the fourth theme, differs from the traditional stereotypes.

For that, we turn to research bibliographical sources, documentary and field, through questionnaires applied to 51.3% of the graduates of 2005. The principle of our research started from the perspective that the nature of work changes as if modify the production relations. In this regard, we note that the job setup in today's society takes a specific form, which subjects the employee to the logic of capital. In our society we have been increasingly valued knowledge and technological innovations. These are not only fundamental to the development of capitalism, they define the worker's profile, with increasing levels of training, which is achieved by education. Such requirements have guided the spread of the Theory of Human Capital between 1960 and 1970 decades, however, we see a contradiction: while the capital depends on the training of workers, unemployed need as a reserve to lower the cost of labor of work. In this sense, we see in education policy a containment effort of the workers' access to higher levels of education, the dual education establishment. Although in our study have shown that during the period of the Governments Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) and Dilma Rousseff (2011-2014) have been marked by an increase of about 70% of enrollments in higher education in the federal system, we found that was not enough, since only 14% of the population able to complete a degree by 2013. The struggle of the workers as a class resistance, is of great importance in the achievement of social rights, because it was through her that access containment policies to higher education declined. The training at the college level was constituted as an important mechanism of improving the quality of life, since all graduates surveyed are working. Of them, 94% work in education; 57% hold a workday of 8 hours or more; and 88% contribute to the family budget. These workers are deployed to work two or more jobs. As a result of the efforts made by these graduates, we see that even in funding, 70% of them won the home; 82% purchased computers; 76% have a car; and 76% have Internet access, among other achievements. However, these graduates have shown the weight of the working day, which is often meaningless. As argued Tonet (2013), quoting Marx, work is no longer part of the worker's life and turns into a sacrifice of his life.

Transformando as velhas formas do viver: o desafio da permanência dos alunos adultos no ensino noturno / Transforming the old ways of living: the challenge of permanence of adult students in nighttime education.

<p>Title: Morning papers, evening papers or webb magazines? - a qualitative study about young adults attitudes about the different magazine types.Number of pages: 45Author: Antonella MarinoTutor: Göran SvenssonCourse: Media and communication studiesPeriod: Autumn term 2009University: Division of Media and communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University.Purpose/aim: The aim of this essay is to find out how young adults of the age of 20-30 discusses about the different types of news papers: morning papers, evening papers and Webb magazines. I have chosen four needs for my essay which are surveillance, emotional release/ entertainment, personal identity and interactivity. The purpose is to find out the differences between morning papers, evening papers and webb magazines. Which magazine type satisfies my four chosen needs in a best way? Which other conditions influence the young adults choices of magazine type? I will also try to find out if the new idea interactivity can be equivalent to the other three needs.Material/Method: I have used three groups for discussion for my essay. The three groups contained 4-5 people. Everyone was in the age of 20-30. I brought some friends of mine to the groups, who instead brought there friends. So everyone in the group knew someone, but not everybody.Main results: There were bigger differences between the attitudes towards morning- and evening papers than between them and the webb magazines. The young adults had positive attitudes towards morning papers, but very negative attitudes towards evening papers. The webb magazines depended on which type of magazine it was. If it was a morning paper in a webb version the attitudes were positive. So the morning papers and their versions in the webb satisfied the needs of the young adults in a best way. But of course the results were different, some of the young adults preferred the evening papers for entertainment and webb maqazines for surveillance and interactivity. The other conditions that influence the choices of the young adults for reading different types of papers were for example their personal attributes, their social situation but even occasions. I found interactivity equivalent to the other needs.Key words: morning papers, evening papers, webb magazines, young adults, surveillance, personal release/entertainment, personal identity and interactivity.</p>

Framing Autism Causes and Prevelance: A Content Analysis of Television Evening News Coverage--1994 Through April 2010

Colson, Angela S 30 August 2010 (has links)
Autism has been declared an urgent public health concern by the U.S. government and an epidemic by some advocacy groups. Determining autism’s diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and causes have been challenging. It is important to examine how the U.S. media have contributed to the public’s understanding of autism. Previous research found that British media coverage of the theory that vaccines cause autism was shown to contribute to the decline of vaccination rates in Britain (Lewis & Speers, 2003). This study examined U.S. television news media coverage using an agenda-setting theory and media framing perspective. A content analysis was conducted of national television evening news broadcasts airing on ABC, CBS, and NBC from 1994, when autism was first recognized as a spectrum disorder through April 2010, the time of this study. Specifically, this study examined the saliency of autism stories and how autism was framed in terms of prevalence and causes.
