Home Recreational Activities and the Effect they Have in a Family Home Evening Program

Butikofer, Dwight Rees 01 January 1971 (has links) (PDF)
The problem in this study was to investigate the effect that home recreational activities have on the attitudes of family members toward a family home evening program. A questionnaire was constructed to gather data regarding these attitudes. The questionnaire was then administered randomly to 250 families residing in Sharon East, Sharon West, Provo, and Provo East Stakes in Provo, Utah. All of the families were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were families of one or more children and held regular family home evening. The findings indicate that the children had a more positive attitude toward family home evening when recreational activities were prevalent. The study also indicates that the participation of family members will be greater if recreational activities are a part of family home evening.

A Study of Factors Which May Influence Attitudes of LDS Teen-Agers Toward Family Home Evening

Miller, Don LeRoy 01 January 1969 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to attitudes of teenagers toward the Family Home Evening Program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hypotheses involving the relationships of certain factors to attitudes toward home evening were tested. A cluster sample of twenty-three ninth grade classes was selected and data were gathered through use of a questionnaire. Statistics used in analysis of data included the Pearsonian product moment correlation coefficient, and analysis of variance. Responses to open-end questions were content analyzed by three independent judges. Findings suggest that perceived participation by teenagers in planning and presenting home evening lessons is related to positive attitudes toward the program. Teenagers' perception of their family as discussing questions or problems of importance to them during home evening also seems to be related to positive attitudes. No significant relationship was found between teenagers' perception of relative differences in task-maintenance orientations of their parents and teenagers' attitudes toward home evening.

Covering Suburbia: Newspapers, Suburbanization, and Social Change in the Postwar Philadelphia Region, 1945-1982

Wyatt, James J. January 2012 (has links)
My dissertation, "Covering Suburbia: Newspapers, Suburbanization, and Social Change in the Postwar Philadelphia Region, 1945-1982," uses the Philadelphia metropolitan area as a representative case study of the ways in which suburban daily newspapers influenced suburbanites' attitudes and actions during the post-World War II era. It argues that the demographic and economic changes that swept through the United States during the second half of the twentieth century made it nearly impossible for urban daily newspapers to maintain their hegemony over local news and made possible the rise of numerous profitable and competitive suburban dailies. More importantly, the dissertation argues that, serving as suburbanites' preferred source for local news during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, enabled the suburban newspapers to directly influence the social, cultural, and physical development of the suburbs. Their emergence also altered the manner in which urban newspapers covered the news and played an instrumental role in the demise of several of the nation's most prominent evening papers during the 1970s and early 1980s, including Philadelphia's Evening Bulletin. This dissertation contributes to the growing body of innovative scholarly studies examining the development of America's suburbs during the post-World War II era; works which have placed suburbanites at the center of national debates regarding public housing, integration, and urban sprawl, but, to this point, have ignored the central role that suburban newspapers played in influencing how people who had only recently moved to the rapidly growing suburbs understood and reacted to these issues through their coverage of local events. In its totality, my dissertation provides a counter to the prevailing scholarly emphasis on the mass media's power and argues that local suburban newspapers played a primary role in shaping suburbanites' ideals, attitudes, and actions during the postwar era. / History

Mécanismes moléculaires de la perception de la température ambiante chez les plantes / Molecular mechanisms of temperature sensing in plants

Nayak, Aditya 28 March 2019 (has links)
Increase in global ambient temperatures poses a significant challenge to wild and cultivated plant species. Most plant species adjust reproductive timing and development to optimize survival and fitness in higher ambient temperatures (Barnabás et al., 2008; Fitter and Fitter, 2002; Willis et al., 2008). These adaptations generally lead to elongated hypocotyls, fewer leaves at time of flowering, accelerated transition from vegetative to reproductive growth phases, fewer seeds, smaller seed pods and decreased leaf area. In the face of rapid climate change, specifically increased ambient growth permissive temperatures, tuning plant thermoresponse is urgently needed to engineer plants for adaptation to climate change and for securing future food production.PIF4 expression is controlled by evening complex (EC), a 3 protein complex comprising of ELF3, ELF4 and LUX, in a temperature dependent manner. The EC is able to repress PIF4 expression by binding to specific motifs at the promoter of PIF4 at lower ambient growth temperature. However this repression of PIF4 expression is removed at higher ambient growth temperature leading to premature ageing of plantsResultsAll three proteins of EC were produced using different expression strategy, ELF4 and LUX in E. coli while ELF3 in insect cells. Protein purification methods and buffers were optimized to obtain stable ELF3 ELF4 and LUX. Size exclusion chromatography was done to verify oligomeric states of the proteins. Since LUX is the only protein in the EC which has known DNA binding domain, it was used for doing mobility shift assays to understand the binding affinity of LUX for its target DNA Motifs which were obtained from protein binding microarrays assays. From the mobility shift assays, it was observed that the DNA binding domain (DBD) alone could bind to its substrate DNA motifs at Nano molar concentrations while 10 fold excesses amount of protein was required for the full length LUX to obtain same amount of binding. High throughput crystallization trails were carried out for full length LUX and LUX- DBD with two different binding motifs. No crystals were obtained for full length LUX while Crystals were obtained for LUX DBD with both the DNA Motifs. Structure for LUX DBD in complex with its target motifs were solved through X-Ray diffraction. Using site directed mutagenesis and Mobility shift assays it was confirmed that this Arginine present at the 146 position of the protein is critical for determining affinity. It was found that the binding affinity was reduced by a factor of 5 when this amino acid was changed. Further to understand its effect in planta.. With this experiments we were able to show that with the R146A mutant full complementation wasn’t observed while the wildtype version was able to completely complement the mutant phenotype. To understand temperature based dynamics of the complex, ELF3, which is the most intrinsically disordered protein of the three proteins that constitute the complex, was studied for structural variation through CD spectroscopy and DLS experiments. From these experiments it was found that ELF3 attains a β-sheet like confirmation at higher temperature while a more globular confirmation at lower temperatures. It was found that this activity of ELF is reversible allowing for flexibility of the whole complex. We found that there were prion like domains in ELF3 protein which were primarily responsible for transition to β-sheet structure at higher temperature. In Order to engineer plants that could survive at higher ambient temperature, we decided to mutate promoter elements of PIF4 through CRISPR/Cas9 to obtain plants that can survive higher temperature.

Rosenberg, Filippa, Strandberg, Ellen January 2017 (has links)

Worcester, Massachusetts : art education motivations at the close of the 19th century

Lloyd, Elizabeth Ellen 10 November 2011 (has links)
Drawing upon rhetorical evidence of three art education activities in Worcester, Massachusetts at the close of the 19th century−The Public School Art League, evening drawing classes, and School Arts magazine−it is argued through this research that the many active facets of art education that occurred in Worcester at this time were constructed in great part as response to the economic climate of the city. This thesis argues that the activities were representative of art education for the improvement of public taste, patience, and the recognition of beauty. In this study, parallels are drawn between these three organizations and activities in Worcester, demonstrating many common initiators and motivations. Exploring art education motivations in Worcester at the turn of the 19th century, this investigation also advocates the need for the study of Japanese influence on art education activities in New England during this same period. / text

Vliv chronotypu a času testování na výsledky kognitivních testů / Effect of chronotype and time of assessment on the results of cognitive tests

Baranyaiová, Katarína January 2018 (has links)
Cieľom bolo identifikovať skupinu dobrovoľníkov dvoch extrémne vyhranených chronotypov, u ktorých druhej fáze experimentu sledovali výkon v kognitívnych testoch testech ( ich preferovanú a nepreferovanú dobu. Použitím neparametrických testových metód boli nájdené signifikantné rozdiely medzi sovami vtáčatami a tiež medzi...

Factors in the Acceptance and Adoption of Family Home Evening in the LDS Church: A Study of Planned Change

Larson, Robert Ernest 01 January 1967 (has links) (PDF)
In an effort to cope with forces which would remove the home from its place of influence, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently inaugurated the Family Home Evening Program. Emerging out of a fifty year history of efforts to institute the home evening practice, it is one of the most systematic and comprehensive efforts to date to implement change within the structure of its member families.Such a deliberate and predetermined effort toward improving the family system constitutes what applied social scientists call "planned change." Home evening, when adopted, has many of the elements of a behavior known as "family ritual." Inasmuch as the church has attempted to institute a ritual practice which the family itself would normally initiate, the Family Home Evening Program becomes, to the social scientists, an interesting social experiment. The family itself must ultimately make the decision as to what extent it will adopt any advocated innovation. Factors within the culture of individual families will play a prominent role in determining to what extent they will be susceptible to the influence of a change agent. This then, becomes a starting place for the investigation of the family home evening. Within this context, the present investigation had two objectives: (1) to explore patterns of family home evening acceptance and adoption, and (2) to explore the relationships between acceptance and adoption of family home evening and certain selected variables.
