Faith and Transitions in a Community of Middle-Aged Women

Alcid, Grace Allas January 2023 (has links)
Not a lot of research has been done on the middle age years despite this being a pivotal time for adults. Women at this stage of their lives undergo many changes such as perimenopause to complete menopause, having to take care of aging parents, and losing a spouse. Additionally, women tend to seek other women for help and support and form a community that is bound by common concerns and experiences. This qualitative case study explored how a group of middle-aged women experienced life changing events and how their faith and community enabled them to overcome the challenges those incidents brought to their lives. This study also looked into other factors that contributed to their being able to confront and overcome the challenges from those experiences . Thirteen women from one faith community in Manila, Philippines were interviewed individually to find answers to the following research questions: 1. How do middle-aged women describe the life-changing event they have experienced? 2. What approach(es) do middle-aged women take when they are undergoing a life changing event so they can cope with the situation they are experiencing? 3. In what ways does the faith community help the women in the group cope with the life changing event? 4. What other factors may influence these women’s ability to copy with the life changing events they face? Another five women from a different faith community were engaged in a focus group discussion to corroborate the following findings from the individual interviews: 1. Unanticipated events were often challenging and devastating and had a major impact on the lives of these middle-aged women. Additionally, those events did not happen in isolation but, rather, led to other events that were even more lifechanging. 2. When confronted with an unexpected, life-changing event, these middle-aged women were faced with a myriad of feelings and emotions that they examined, evaluated and shared with people they trusted. They also handled their own situation by seeking help from others. 3. Support was a critical element in the ability of these middle-aged women to confront and overcome a devastating transition event. Their faith community offered various types of support during most of the events. 4. The faith of middle-aged women was a significant factor in confronting and overcoming those unexpected events. The women believed their faith made them stronger and made them determined to prevail over the circumstances of the event. This study concluded the following: 1. Middle-aged women go through a variety of highly impactful transitions and their reactions to the event vary from one woman to another depending on the context in which it occurs and the impact on the woman’s life. The manner in which a woman in this age range adapts to the transition event will predict how they are able to cope with the impact of the event on their lives. 2. Support provided by the network built by a woman over her lifetime is essential in confronting and overcoming challenges posed by a transition event. Support can come in different forms and is appreciated by the women. That support enables them to confront, overcome and adapt to the transition event. 3. The women’s religious beliefs are critical to recovery and growth of these middle-aged women and sustain them as they are adapting to their transition events.

Nya Moderaternas retorik i det postmoderna tillståndet

Hållkvist, Lukas January 2024 (has links)
This thesis explores the renewal process within the Moderate Party from a postmodern perspective, focusing on epideictic rhetoric and theories of pseudo-events. By analyzing the party's strategic repositioning and communication methods, the study examines how the Moderates reshaped their public image and relationship with the electorate. Utilizing examples from political statements and internal documents, the thesis demonstrates how staged events and media appearances were used to direct public discourse. It also highlights how this renewal work contributed to shaping the party's identity and strategy in an era characterized by the increasing significance of media and image-focused political communication. This study thereby contributes to a deeper understanding of the nature of contemporary political communication and its effects on democratic processes and political engagement.

CFD Study of Ship Hydrodynamics in Calm Water with Shear Current and in Designed Wave Trails

Phan, Khang Minh 05 1900 (has links)
Although the capability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in modeling ship hydrodynamics is well explored in many studies, they still have two main limitations. First, those studies ignore the effect of non-uniform shear current which exists in realistic situation. Second, the focus of most studies was laid more on the seakeeping/maneuvering performance and less attention was paid to survivability of ships due to extreme ship response events in waves, which are considered rare events but influential. In this thesis, we explore the capability of CFD in those two areas. In the first part of the thesis, the hydrodynamic performance of KCS in the presence of a non-uniform shear current is investigated for the first time using high-fidelity CFD simulations. Various shear current conditions with different directions were considered and results were compared with the ones with no shear current. The second part of the thesis focuses on study of rare events of ship responses by development of extreme response conditioning techniques to design the wave trail. Two conditioned techniques based on Gaussian and non-Gaussian processes are considered.

Neural Analysis of Juvenile Songbirds : Analysis of context dependent change in the trial-by-trial variability of spiking activity recorded from song birds

Seymour, Elliot, Hussaein, Ahmad January 2021 (has links)
Previous studies have shown that it is possible for juvenile songbirds to learn songs through listening to prerecorded songs played back to them. What is not known however, is how this will differ from normal learning, both on neural level as well as on the bird as whole. In this project we have taken data from playback experiments and attempted to measure the differences in neuron spiking activity across two different contexts. Firstly, when the bird is only listening to playback recordings and secondly when the bird is listening to playback recordings on the same day as listening to a live tutor. We analysed the spiking activity with several different methods in order to establish a distinction between these contexts that could be seen across birds and across trials. The methods include analysing joint spiking events as binary spike trains, the Fano factor across trials as well as the variability of the spike rate. Our hypothesis was that the birds would learn more effectively on days when exposed to a live tutor, therefore, the playback days would show much higher and much more varied spiking data. From our results we found many cases when this hypothesis is true. However, it does not hold true for each of the birds, as some are offered similar results in either context. Therefore we believe that further study would be required to get conclusive results. Although, our results tend to favour the tutoring days it is only suggestive that this shows evidence of better learning.

Alpha Amylase as an Emerging Biomarker of Microaspiration in Mechanically Ventilated Patients: An Integrative Review of the Literature

Chase, Chloe 01 January 2019 (has links)
Aims: The purpose of this thesis was to synthesize the current literature on alpha amylase as an emerging biomarker of microaspiration in mechanically ventilated patient. Methods: The methodology included a review and synthesis of pertinent research articles from 1981-2018, written in English language. Criteria for inclusion in the review were all articles that evaluated α- amylase in tracheal secretions or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) as a diagnostic tool for identifying microaspiration. The search yielded 11 studies that were reviewed. Findings: The findings suggest that once aspiration occurs, the duration of α-amylase in the lungs requires further exploration to assist in interpretation of positive values. After these values are identified they need be used consistently used throughout practice of mechanically ventilated patients. Inconsistencies in the defining parameters of α-amylase were used with the thirteen studies. Conclusion: Testing amylase levels can require financial stability, standardized training, and timeliness of collecting the specimen. Alpha-amylase is a biomarker of microaspiration. Further research should be conducted to evaluate the biomarker capabilities of α-amylase to assist in early identification and/or prevention of microaspiration in mechanically ventilated patients. Implications for nursing policy practice, education, and considerations for upcoming research of α-amylase were reviewed with limitations to the study.
