Festivals and sustainability : reducing energy related greenhouse gas emissions at music festivals

Marchini, Ben January 2013 (has links)
This thesis investigates the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions relating to electrical power provision at UK music festivals. It has been carried out in partnership with a number of UK festival organisers and power providers. The thesis provides a literature review of sustainable event management and the associated electrical power provision, before then investigating the existing methodologies for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions at festivals. This review identified a lack of data regarding energy demand at events other than total fuel demand. While energy data does not improve the accuracy of GHG accounting, it provides more detail which can identify opportunities to reduce these emissions. Data was gathered from 73 power systems at 18 music festivals from 2009-2012. This produced typical festival power load profiles for different system types including stages, traders and site infrastructure. These load profiles were characterised using a series of indicators that can create performance benchmarks, in addition to increasing the detail of carbon auditing. Analysis of the load profiles identifies opportunities for emission reduction. These address either the supply or demand for power in order to reduce on site fuel consumption. These opportunities include changes in operating procedure to reduce demand during non-operational periods, utilising low energy equipment on stages, and using a power provision system capable of adjusting power plant supply to meet demand. The work has documented power demand at festivals, and highlighted opportunities for change that can reduce costs and emissions, as well as informing festivals on their practices.

Governance of sustainable event-led regeneration : the case of London 2012 Olympics

Edizel, Hayriye Özlem January 2014 (has links)
This study aims to understand the interface between the governance of event-led regeneration and sustainable development by taking the London 2012 Olympic Games/Lower Lee Valley area regeneration process as a case study. Since the early 1990s, there is a widespread trend towards the use of mega-events to promote a city, stimulate the local economy and regenerate rundown post-industrial areas and communities. The importance of mega-events in destination development has gained increasing attention and they are also considered as a catalyst for city regeneration. The emphasis in the aims of event-led regeneration has changed over the time and the sustainability in terms of economic, physical, social and governance dimensions has gained significant attention from both organisers and researchers. In the context of sustainable event-led regeneration, multiple stakeholder perspectives are essential and it is important to know how different actors are involved and interact in an event-led regeneration. London used 2012 Olympics to regenerate East London, one of the most deprived parts of the city. It is taken as an opportunity to explore new frontiers of interaction and cooperation between the local, regional and national stakeholders. This research adopts an integrative approach, which evaluates the changes in the built environment, social structure and stakeholder organisation together to evaluate the sustainability of the event-led regeneration governance. Data collection methods include interviews with stakeholders of London 2012 planning and organization, focus group meetings with residents living in and around the fringe of the London 2012 Olympic Park, secondary data analysis and document analysis. The research provides a sound base from which the planning of more sustainable mega-events can be undertaken by using the epistemological framework for sustainable event-led regeneration and the evaluation of their impact more fully measured across a wider stakeholder community. The conclusion emphasises the importance of the collaborative approach for the governance and resilience as critical for sustainable event-led regeneration.

Frimodig, Siri, Jäger Stenberg, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
Background: Marketing communication is constantly changing and one way to communicate with customer is to use sponsoring. Sponsorship in sport has changed over the past years and new opportunities has developed. It is therefore interesting to ask sponsors what their opinion about sponsoring is. Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to find out why companies choose to work with sport sponsorship and what there opinion about it is versus other marketing strategies. Method: A qualitative study based on interviews with non-probability sample. Conclusion: This study reveals that there are several reasons to sponsor sporting events. The main reason is the possibility to communicate with a large and diverse targetgroup and have the opportunity for a personal meeting with the targetgroup. In today's information society, it is important to be unique and to communicate on a platform where consumers are responsive. All sponsorship needs to be evaluated and measured to be justified. The study also indicate that sponsorship is different from other marketing methods but the message is the same as in other marketing channels. The primary difference is the relationship with the customer and also the companies commitment to the sporting event through activation.

Migrationserfarenheter : Före detta asylsökandes flyttningsmönster i Sverige

Dahl, Sara January 2015 (has links)
This paper explores the individual meanings behind the patterns of residential mobility of former asylum seekers in Sweden. While there are numerous studies of residential segregation and migration patterns amongst natives and immigrants alike, fewer have asked the actual patternmakers what driving forces lie behind their decisions to resettle. This study aims to put light on former asylum seekers’ specific experiences of their resettlements and whether the asylum process in itself affect later migration patterns during the life-course. Through in-depth interviews seven respondents told their life stories with focus on how and why they resettled during their time inSweden. The study showed how the structural factors that initiated their general migration patterns of frequent resettlements gave way over time to less frequent moves where life-course events were the main factors. The results indicate that the asylum process may indeed affect subsequent resettlements in so far that the first own accommodation type of area seem to be important to future residential area choices throughout the life-course. The findings should be of interest for further studies on a greater scale and to policy makers trying to counteract segregation in the metropolitan areas of Sweden in a time of increased refugee flows.

Étude des réflexes cardiorespiratoires d'origine oesophagienne chez l'agneau nouveau-né sans sédation / Cardiorespiratory reflexes originating from stimulation of the esophagus in non sedated newborn lambs

Nault, Stéphanie January 2016 (has links)
Abstract : Introduction : The relationship between vagal reflexes originating from the esophagus and cardiorespiratory events in neonates (apneas, bradycardias, O[subscript 2] desaturations) remains a controversial subject. Previous studies in an a esthetized adult animals have shown that stimulation of esophagal chemo- or mechanoreceptors may cause various reflexes (Jadcherla, 2012). In addition, the involvement of C-fiber endings in some of those reflexes has been suggested (Lang et al., 2001). Considering that many uncertainties remain about these reflexes, especially in the neonatal period, the goals of this study were to i) characterize the cardiorespiratory reflexes observed when a gastroesophageal reflux is mimicked; ii) determine the effect of the stimulation site on the amplitude of those reflexes; iii) determine whe ther C-fibers are involved. Methods: Eight newborn lambs were surgically instrumented; 48 hours later, two separate polysomnographic recordings were performed without sedation before and after permanent C-fiber blockade (Diaz et al., 2000). Five randomized stimulations were performed to mimic a gastroesophageal reflux at different levels of the esophagus. Results: Esophageal stimulations cause cardiorespiratory inhibitory reflexes. Double stimulation causes more important reflexes, including bradycardia and apnea. The cardiorespiratory inhibition response was less marked after permanent and selective blockade of C-fibers by capsaicïne. Conclusion: My experimental results show, for the first time, a relationship between esophageal vagal reflexes and cardiorespiratory events in a neonatal, non-sedated animal and suggest some involvement of C-fiber endings. Results also suggest that proximal gastroesophageal refluxes generate more important reflexes.

A revised surface age for the North Polar Layered Deposits of Mars

Landis, Margaret E., Byrne, Shane, Daubar, Ingrid J., Herkenhoff, Kenneth E., Dundas, Colin M. 16 April 2016 (has links)
The North Polar Layered Deposits (NPLD) of Mars contain a complex stratigraphy that has been suggested to retain a record of past eccentricity- and obliquity-forced climate changes. The surface accumulation rate in the current climate can be constrained by the crater retention age. We scale NPLD crater diameters to account for icy target strength and compare surface age using a new production function for recent small impacts on Mars to the previously used model of Hartmann (2005). Our results indicate that ice is accumulating in these craters several times faster than previously thought, with a 100m diameter crater being completely infilled within centuries. Craters appear to have a diameter-dependent lifetime, but the data also permit a complete resurfacing of the NPLD at similar to 1.5 ka.

Potential economies : complexity, novelty and the event

Human, Oliver 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary concern of this dissertation will be to understand under what conditions novelty arises within a system. In classical philosophy, the notion of novelty is usually said to arise out of an event. However, the notion of an event often carries with it metaphysical and conservative implications. Therefore, part of the concern of this dissertation is to begin to develop an approach to novelty which is not dependent upon the event. This approach is developed through the insights offered by Critical Complexity and post‐structuralist philosophy. In social science the model of the frame has dominated how to think about the limitations to the context specific nature of knowledge. Instead of the analogy of a frame, this dissertation argues that it is better to adopt the notion of an ‘economy’. This is due to the fact that the notion of an economy allows social scientists to better theorize the relationships which constitute the models they create. The argument for an economy is made by exploring the connections between the work of Jacques Derrida, the complexity theorist Edgar Morin and Georges Bataille. However, when using the notion of an economy, one must always take the excess of this economy into consideration. This excess always feeds back to disrupt the economy from which it is excluded. Using terms developed in complexity theory, this dissertation illustrates how a system adapts to the environment by using this excess. Due to this there can never be a comprehensively modelled complex system because there are always facets of this system which remain hidden to the observer. The work of Alain Badiou, whose central concern is the notion of novelty arising out of an event, is introduced. The implications of depending on the event for novelty to arise are drawn out by discussing the affinities between the work of Derrida and Badiou. In this regard, Derrida’s use of the term ‘event’ much more readily agrees with a complexity informed understanding of the term in contrast to the quasi‐religious definition which Badiou uses. This complexity‐informed understanding of the event illustrates that what the event reveals is simultaneously a dearth and wealth of possibilities yet to be realized. Therefore the event cannot be depended upon to produce novelty. However, the notion of the event must not be discarded too quickly; classical science has traditionally discarded this idea due to its reductive approach. The idea of process opens up an understanding of the radical novelties produced in history to the possibility of the event and to a new understanding of ontology. This dissertation proposes that one can begin to think about radical forms of novelty without the event through the notion of experimentation. This approach allows one to engage with what exists rather than relying upon an event to produce novelty. This argument is made by following Bataille, who argues that through an engagement with non‐utilitarian forms of action, by expending for the sake of expenditure, the world is opened up to possibilities which remain unrealized under the current hegemony. In this light, this dissertation begins to develop a definition of novelty as that which forces a rereading of the system’s history.

Biostratigraphy and microfacies of the cretaceous sediments in the Indus Basin, Pakistan

Khan, Suleman January 2013 (has links)
In this thesis I document the biostratigraphy of two Cretaceous sections in Pakistan, the Chichali Nala Section and the Moghal Kot Section. Furthermore, I document the stratigraphy of the so-called Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs) in the Moghal Kot Section. In addition, I establish potential links between the planktonic foraminiferal evolution and these OAEs in the Moghal Kot Section. Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) are established for the Valanginian time by using the TEX86 and δ18O proxies in the Chichali Nala Section. The new biostratigraphy of the Chichali Nala Section shows that the ages of the sediments are mainly Valanginian. The biostratigraphy of the Moghal Kot Section show ranges in age from the Early Aptian to Early Maastrichtian. Seven OAEs were recorded in the Moghal Kot Section based on the combined study of biostratigraphy, microfacies, and δ13C analysis. These OAEs correlate well with previously documented OAEs elsewhere, therefore the new record of the OAEs in the Moghal Kot Section confirms the widespread occurrence of these events, possibly all global in nature. A quantitative review of the planktonic foraminiferal evolution in the Moghal Kot Section indicates that the environmental changes along the OAE2 have strongly forced the evolution of the planktonic foraminifera. Conversely, no clear relationship is observed between other OAEs and planktonic foraminiferal evolution in the same section. The SST results based on the TEX86 in the Chichali Nala Section show that the surface ocean was consistently much warmer (10-12 oC) than today at the paleolatitude of ~-35o during the Valanginian time. Such warm conditions are also supported by the spore and pollen assemblages of the Chichali Nala Section. Collectively the two datasets indicate strongly that the Valanginian world was overall extremely warm. Such warming during the Valanginian is incompatible with previously suggested cooler conditions during this time period.
