Detection and analysis of connection chains in network forensics

Almulhem, Ahmad 06 April 2010 (has links)
Network forensics is a young member of the bigger family of digital forensics discipline. In particular, it refers to digital forensics in networked environments. It represents an important extension to the model of network security where emphasis is traditionally put on prevention and to a lesser extent on detection. It focuses on the collection, and analysis of network packets and events caused by an intruder for investigative purposes. A key challenge in network forensics is to ensure that the network itself is forensically-ready, by providing an infrastructure to collect and analyze data in real-time. In this thesis, we propose an agent-based network forensics system, which is intended to add real-time network forensics capabilities into a controlled network. We also evaluate the proposed system by deploying and studying it in a real-life environment. Another challenge in network forensics arises because of attackers ability to move around in the network, which results in creating a chain of connections; commonly known as connection chains. In this thesis, we provide an extensive review and taxonomy of connection chains. Then, we propose a novel framework to detect them. The framework adopts a black-box approach by passively monitoring inbound and outbound packets at a host, and analyzing the observed packets using association rule mining. We assess the proposed framework using public network traces, and demonstrate both its efficiency and detection capabilities. We, finally, propose a profiling-based framework to investigate connection chains that are distributed over several ip addresses. The framework utilizes a simple yet extensible hacker model that integrates information about a hacker's linguistic, operating system and time of activity. We establish the effectiveness of the proposed approach through several simulations and an evaluation with real attack data.

A study of missing transverse energy in minimum bias events with in-time pile-up at the Large Hadron Collider using the ATLAS Detector and √s=7 TeV proton-proton collision data

Wang, Kuhan 03 August 2011 (has links)
A sample of $ L dt = 3.67 pb{-1} of minimum bias events observed using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at $\s=7 TeV is analyzed for Missing Transverse Energy (MET) response in the presence of in-time pile-up. We find that the MET resolution ($\sigma_\text{X,Y}$) is consistent with a simple model of the detector response for minimum bias events, scaling with respect to the sum of the scalar energy ($\sum E_\text{T}$) as $\sigma_\text{X,Y}=A\sqrt{\sum E_\text{T} }$. This behavior is observed in the presence of in-time pile-up and does not vary with global calibration schemes. We find a bias in the mean ($\mu_\text{X,Y}$) of the MET that is linear with respect to $\sum E_\text{T}$, leading to an asymmetry in the $\phi_\text{X,Y}$ distribution of the MET. We propose an explanation for this problem in terms of a misalignment of the nominal center of the ATLAS detector with respect to its real center. We contrast the data with a Monte Carlo sample produced using PYTHIA. We find that the resolution, bias and asymmetry are all approximately reproduced in simulation. / Graduate

Exposure of children to early childhood development programs and subsequent school entry and grade progression within broader contexts of the home environment in Uganda

Nyeko, Jolly Peninnah Tumuhairwe 12 December 2011 (has links)
Children’s entry into school at appropriate ages and their successful progression through the primary grades are strong predictors of later life opportunities and successes. This retrospective study focuses on factors that can influence age appropriate school entry and grade progression with children who were eight at the time of the study and who live in a peri-urban community in Uganda. Children in this resource constrained community face risks of educational exclusion and longer term underachievement that arise from social, health and economic disadvantages, inequalities and inadequate services. The most disadvantaged children, those who live in households with life stress events such as the absence of one or more parents or the impact of diseases such as HIV and AIDS, are at risk of not enrolling in school at an appropriate age or not advancing successfully. Such risks may be mediated through family composition and family demographic variables and may be ameliorated through the presence of community programs designed for young children. This study examined the influence of family variables, home environment life stress events, and exposure to early childhood development (ECD) services on the educational transitions of young children. The study determined that children living with biological parents, and parents with higher educational levels, had more opportunities of exposure to community-based ECD programs, had higher success in enrolling in school at an age-appropriate time, and more successfully progressed through the grade levels. For the purposes of this study, data were collected from 535 children and their 535 caregivers in the peri-urban community of Kyanja in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The findings provide a backdrop for a discussion regarding the relationship between home environment life stress events, community ECD services for young children, and the current educational status of children aged eight years. A major focus lies on whether enrolment in ECD can help close the gap created by events in and the structure of the home environment. / Graduate

Late Quaternary climatic and oceanographic changes in the Northeast Pacific as recorded by dinoflagellate cysts from Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California (Mexico)

Price, Andrea Michelle 20 July 2012 (has links)
A high-resolution record of organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst production in Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California (Mexico) reveals a complex paleoceanographic history over the last ~40 ka. Guaymas Basin is an excellent location to perform high resolution studies of changes in Late Quaternary climate and paleo-productivity because it is characterized by high primary productivity, high sedimentation rates, and low oxygen bottom waters. These factors contribute to the deposition and preservation of laminated sediments throughout large portions of the core MD02-2515. In this study we document dinoflagellate cyst production at a centennial to millennial scale throughout the Late Quaternary. Based on the cyst assemblages three major dinoflagellate cyst zones, with seven subzones were established. The most dominant dinoflagellate cyst taxa found throughout the core were Brigantedinium spp. and Operculodinium centrocarpum. Dansgaard-Oeschger events 5-8 are inferred in the dinoflagellate cyst records on the basis of increases in warm taxa, such as Spiniferites pachydermus. Preceding and during the Last Glacial Maximum cysts of Polykrikos cf. kofoidii increase in abundance, responding to oceanographic changes in the Gulf of California perhaps caused by a regression in sea-level. Other intervals of interest are the Younger Dryas where cooler conditions are not recorded, and the Holocene which is characterized by the consistent presence of warm water species Stelladinium reidii, Tuberculodinidum vancampoae, Bitectatodinium spongium and an increase in Quinquecuspis concreta. Changes in cyst assemblages, concentrations and species diversity, along with geochemical data reflect major millennial scale climatic and oceanographic changes. / Graduate

Asymmetric Warfare in an Asymmetric World: A Theoretical Analysis of Canadian Antiterrorism Policy and Spending

Burak, Kyle 22 April 2014 (has links)
An assessment of the costs and benefits of antiterrorism policies has a number of challenges. Canada’s situation is particularly complex because of its asymmetric and integrative economic and geographic relationship with the United States. Few theoretical models of international antiterrorism policy exist and none fit well this asymmetric relationship. This thesis attempts to fill this void by understanding the motives behind Canadian antiterrorism policies and the related spending, and how these are affected by the relationship with the United States. We explore a two country theoretical model with strategic interactions, focusing on relative spending. What is found is that the economics and geography of the two countries play a large role in motivating spending and can drastically alter antiterrorism spending beyond that needed solely for public safety in Canada. / Graduate / 0511 / 0501 / 0616 / kyleburak@gmail.com

Kommunal krishanteringsförmåga : Uppsala kommuns beredskap inför en eventuell naturkatastrof

Runesson, Elin January 2015 (has links)
