Pour une approche heuristique du son d'or de Charlemagne Palestine : la reconstuction de Schlingen-Blängen / The golden sound of Charlemagne Palestine, a heuristic approach : the reconstruction of Schlingen-Blängen

Ella-Meye, Francois 24 March 2017 (has links)
The music of Charlemagne Palestine seems to transcend both american and european musical mouvements of the twentieth and twentieth-first centuries. His approach of drone music finds its origins in his early years when he would participate in synanogue choirs, singing lamentations, as well as in his young adult years when he would work as a bell ringer in the church of Saint-Thomas in Manhattan. Later on, his experimental post-Cage music approach and his vocal studies of Hindustani music, all gave birth to a body of work that oscillates between music, installation and performance, not without recalling in various ways certain european avant-garde musical esthetics. The present doctoral thesis aims to study the piece "Schlingen-Blängen" for organ, via a musical heuristics approach, in order to apprehend the pursuit of the "golden sound" in the oeuvre of the New-York contemporary artist, based in Brussels.

Sonic Activation: a Multimedia Performance-Installation

Lough, Alex Joseph 06 May 2016 (has links)
Sonic Activation is a multimedia performance-installation featuring sound sculptures, video projections, and performance with live electronics for solo and mixed ensembles. The work aims to unpack the nature in which we hear and interact with sound, space, and gesture. It is a project that recontextualizes the typical practice of performance and installation modes of music and art. The event uses 12 loudspeakers spaced around a gallery to create a densely layered sonic atmosphere that gently fluctuates and slowly evolves. Throughout the event, the audience is encouraged to freely navigate the gallery and experience the subtle changes in sound as they manifest in the space.

INCIPIT: The search for a multidisciplinary language at the crossroads of Antiquity and Contemporaneity

Sprenkeling, Lobke 18 April 2016 (has links)
[EN] The PhD thesis "INCIPIT: The search for a multidisciplinary language at the crossroads of Antiquity and Contemporaneity" focusses on the influence of the methodology of Historically Informed Performance practice on the creation of a Contemporary Music Theatre performance. The framework and creative basis for their connection is the Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). In music theatre it is not only about music as one of the scenic elements; musical thinking structures the entire theatrical process. It is a genre-between-genre, where various art disciplines interact. Historically Informed Performance practice is a characteristic musical approach of the Early Music movement. It includes study of historical documents and objects in order to obtain a more profound understanding of the music and a performance practice which is based upon this comprehension. In our thesis, Historically Informed Performance practice has been connected with Contemporary Music Theatre through a mise-en-scene of Dante's Commedia, principally based upon its sonorous non-musical and musical references. Also references of movement, gesture, colour and light were taken into account for the mise-en-scene, but always in relation to the sonorous references. In this way, the mise-en-scene is a sonorous journey through Dante's Afterworld as he might have imagined it, but also a contemporary visual and dramatical journey. This research has been done through artistic practice: the creation and performance of a contemporary music theatre work called Incipit. It is based upon thorough knowledge of the Commedia and, through its methodology of Historically Informed Performance Practice, it has mostly made used of 14th century musical sources. An audio file was created as a sonorous element for Incipit, based on previously existing sounds and recording of songs and texts. The performance was recorded in video format. The research question was: How do the work methods taken from Historically Informed Performance practice contribute to the creation of a contemporary music theatre performance in a mise-en-scene of the Divina Commedia? For this practice-based research not only historical-musical knowledge was necessary but also literary knowledge of Dante's Commedia and its underlying meanings. Theoretical knowledge thus was an important basis for the practice. However, the practice itself also provided information for the theory. For the composition of three-voice "simple polyphony" according to the rules for polyphonic improvisation around 1300, theoretical knowledge was essential, but their practice led to historical-musical insights of its performance and its rules for intervallic and rhythmic matters. The practice provided a new perspective on Dante's narrative from a sonorous point of view. Finally, the practice combined two disciplines, Early Music and Contemporary Music Theatre, which are not commonly combined, and it provides us new theoretical insights of creative processes and musical-theatrical languages. / Sprenkeling, L. Le concept d'objet sonore : le problème de la perception dans la recherche musicale schaefferienne / The concept of sound object : the question of perception in the Schaefferian musical research

Nadrigny, Pauline 18 June 2014 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation focuses on the concept of sound object, coined by the founder of the “musique concrète” aesthetic movement Pierre Schaeffer – who wrote several essays dedicated to the perception of sound within a musical perspective. In studying the genealogy of this concept which has become very popular in contemporary music, we first wish to show how the reunion of varied theoretical models helps to build an original aesthetic reflection – natural science, linguistics, and above all the philosophy of contemporary perception (phenomenology, structuralism and Gestalt theory). Indeed, the concept of sound object is the result of both technical gestures – recording and manipulation of the recorded sound, acousmatic situation – and intellectual and radical moves such as the absence of reference to the context of sound production, the refusal to use the theoretical frame of acoustic physics (thus enabling the morphological description of the sound phenomenon to take precedence over the explanation of such phenomenon), the general study of our listening functions (acoulogy). Such perception of the sound “for itself” is to be viewed as the application of the phenomenological epoché to the listening activity (reduced listening), and leads us to consider the ambiguous relationships between a particular musical aesthetics and the philosophy of perception required to analyse its object. More generally, our study thus intends to describe the role played by a certain philosophy of perception in the appearance of a plastic perception of the sound phenomenon, though such phenomenon initially resists objectification.

Les musiques expérimentales à l'épreuve de l'innovation : l'exemple du GRIM à Marseille / Experimental music through innovation : the example of the GRIM in Marseille

Debade, Nicolas 08 December 2017 (has links)
Since the first experiments by John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer up to the loud hybridations of noise music, experimental music has followed a reconfiguration of its practices in contact with a constant technological evolution. This thesis aims to present experimental music as a singular and radical scene in the digital era through a historic, aesthetic and sociological procedure. This research is seen through the context of the GRIM, a venue located in Marseilles dedicated to experimental and impovised music.Through the study of this local scene, emblematic of practices by artists and audiences, we will present the different interactions that feed this emancipatory and emergent creative context. This will lead us to assess incertitudes in professional musicians’ careers and the expertise of amateurs of this music scene.Furthermore, faced with technological innovations on one hand and institutional issues on the other, this artistic scene finds itself in a changing economy. In this pluralistic context, we shall define the codes and conventions that rule experimental music to model the characteristics of this specific scene inside the art worlds.

Música móvel crítica / -

Bandeira, André Damião 16 October 2015 (has links)
This research aims to propose an analysis and reflection on the production of experimental electronic music mediated by mobile devices. The academic and artistic research presented at this event involved works and applications mediated by various types of devices, among the experiences the main focus was to explore the mobility of electronic interfaces in interactive situations in urban space. After the release of corporate mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets at the end of the last decade the perspective of academic research has changed a lot: it started chater objects of consumption rather than situations. This change of focus brings in significant changes between consumption and cultural production. Because these interfaces follow a asymmetric model of consumption between possibilities production and procurement. Corporate devices are primarily controlled consumption platforms, which are based on market monopoly, surveillance, planned obsolescence, and therefore cause significant reorganizations in our daily lives (STRIPHAS, 2011).Thus in this text we speculate about other alternatives to the practices of Mobile Music. A Critical Mobile Music, which does not depend solely on corporate monopolies for its production and propagation. Therefore we propose a reflection on issues of sound fidelity, in order to make that we propose a defense of precarious sounds and devices - the proletariat of sound reproduction - those that make the electronic low fidelity soundscape of everyday life.

Animate structures : the compositions and improvisations of the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra

Schuiling, Floris Jan January 2015 (has links)
Founded in 1967, the Amsterdam-based improvising collective the Instant Composers Pool is one of the longest consistently performing groups in improvised music. This thesis forms an ethnography and musicological study of the ICP Orchestra, which originated when the "pool" developed a more coherent line-up around 1980. With a background in experimental music as well as free jazz, their performance practice differs in many respects from the practices of American forms of jazz. Whereas most accounts of improvisation emphasise orality and creative interaction in opposition to the performance of composed music, 'instant composition' defines improvisation precisely in terms of compositional thinking. Moreover, founding member and orchestra leader Misha Mengelberg composed a very diverse repertoire for the group which draws on styles from Duke Ellington to John Cage and uses various forms of compositional and notational techniques to explore the different improvisatory possibilities that they afford, thus blurring the distinction between improvisation and composition both in name and in practice. Apart from a detailed historical and ethnographic description of a group that is central to a genre that has been underrepresented in music-historical research, this thesis investigates the repertoire of the ICP and its use as an opportunity to reconsider the relation between musical text and performance. Drawing on my observations and interviews with the musicians, and connecting these to theories of material culture and science and technology studies, it develops a concept of compositions as animated and animating objects in performance, tools and materials that participate in the creative interactive process of improvised performance rather than textual representations of 'the music itself'. I substantiate this theory with detailed descriptions of ICP performances recorded during fieldwork. This contributes to a rethinking of musical notation and simultaneously brings new insights into improvisation as a creative practice.

Jonsäll, Hans Lennart January 2021 (has links)
This Bachelor Thesis in composition explores an alternative compositional process for creating improvised music through the approach of sound design. The questions addressed in the thesis are concerned with how the soundscape can be controlled by the composer while still maintaining the expressivity of an improvised performance. Thus, the composer’s role as both sound designer, producer and performer is investigated using live electronics and score design. The theoretical framework for the thesis is to be found in the intersection between Anglo-American experimental music, electronic music, sound design and electroacoustic improvisation. Key influences include indeterminacy as expressed in the music of John Cage, Deep Listening practices pioneered by Pauline Oliveros as well as the aesthetical paradigms of electronic and electroacoustic music. The artistic methods revolved around the following steps: studio workshops with musicians (Fredrik Ekenvi and José Louis Relova Gallego) exploring timbres, playing techniques and music technology in real-time followed by associative discussions about the soundscapes created; composing audio and graphical drafts influenced by the workshops; designing diagrams for the electronics and compiling these to a design document; workshopping and performing the final piece (Towards the Event Horizon). Towards the Event Horizon (for bass clarinet, electric guitar and live electronics) is the final result of the work, comprising a score with accompanying design document as well as a recording of the original performance at Studio Acusticum in Piteå 20th of March 2021. The artefacts and associated documentation are presented in their entirety on the dedicated Research Catalogue exposition. Conclusions include how composition and sound design are tied together and cannot be considered as isolated processes, especially in the context of live electronics; the interrelationship between the improviser, the acoustic soundscape and the artistic associations that inform the improvisation; the importance of form as the defining element of a composition and lastly; how a score for improvised music can be devised in the shape of a blueprint of form and texture, setting certain technical, sonic and gestural conditions while leaving the performer to play freely within this frame. /
Konstnärliga artefakter presenteras via Research Catalogue: https://www.researchcatalogue.net/view/1250652/1250651
