Evaluation of restoration efforts in Dalälven - conditions for survival rate of Salmo trutta and Salmo salar

Svärd, Ville January 2023 (has links)
Rivers are among the most anthropogenically affected ecosystems in the world by irrigation, transportation, channelizing, and hydropower. Habitat restorations have become a popular method to restore the heterogeneity and complexity of rivers aiming for improvement of biodiversity. In this master thesis, I studied the effects of restoration in a regulated and channelized river in the middle of Sweden. Differences in fish abundance and diversity together with hatching success and survival rate from egg to smolt of Seatrout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were tested between restored and unrestored reaches. In addition, differences in abundance, biomass, diversity, and composition of benthic species between restored and unrestored areas were studied.  The study design consisted of three restored and three unrestored locations where artificial spawning grounds (redds) were placed, electrofishing was conducted, and an inventory of abundance, biomass and diversity metrics of benthic fauna was performed. Whitlock-Vibert boxes were used in the artificial redds and were used to calculate hatching success. The inventory of benthic fauna consisted of kick-sampling and sampling of stones followed by identification and measuring of length in the lab.  The findings in this study suggest that the survival of salmonids is not limited by the hatching success but that the lack of migration possibilities and the low survival rate from egg to smolt makes it unlikely with a successful reintroduction of Atlantic salmon and seatrout in Dalälven. Furthermore, one could argue that the habitat restorations have not increased the diversity of benthic fauna. However, it is possible that there is an ongoing shift in the benthic fauna towards a more diverse community in the restored areas and it is possible it will be more visible in a few years which supports maintaining long-term monitoring. Lastly, this study enlightens consequences with anthropogenically affected rivers and leaves opportunities for further studies.

The Impact of Ivermectin Treatment in Cattle on Dung Degradation and Fauna Abundance and Diversity in Tanzania

Ruhinda, Miriam Shani 08 June 2023 (has links)
Ivermectin also called the wonder drug has been used over the years to control internal and external parasites in livestock. In humans it has been used for the control of several neglected tropical diseases. With regards to efforts to control malaria, mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin in humans and livestock has been considered as a potential tool. This is due to challenges in malaria preventive strategies such as insecticide resistance in mosquitoes, shift in their behaviors and residual transmission. Ivermectin reduces malaria transmission by targeting the mosquito nervous system resulting in their death. Ivermectin and its metabolites could have great impacts on the environment as well as human and health. In temperate settings, impacts of ivermectin in the environment were studied due to intense use of the drug in livestock. There is also a necessity to study effects of ivermectin in the tropics before MDA for malaria vector control. Despite its great potential, previous studies done recorded toxicity and sensitivity of the drug to most arthropods mainly dung organisms because ivermectin is released in dung at high concentrations for the case of livestock. With dung organism activity being affected the dung decomposition process is disrupted, cattle avoid these grazing areas leading to financial losses. In the tropics where there is a high number of malaria cases, there is no information on the impacts of the drug in the environment. We placed standardized dung pats from ivermectin-treated and control cattle to determine the effect of ivermectin on dung degradation and dung fauna in Tanzania. For the dung degradation study, at 15, 30 and 45 days post placement, we observed a total of 220 dung pats in the field. We measured termite colonization; wet weight of the entire pat; water content; dry weight of the 10 g subsamples and organic matter from subsamples and the whole pat. For the dung fauna study, we collected fresh dung 3, 10 and 29 days post treatment and put the pats out in the field to be colonized by insects before being transferred to emergence traps. We also did a semi field study where we collected dung pats 1,2,3 and 5 days post treatment to obtain larvae counts. We qualitatively assessed insect larvae activity in the field experiment and observed and counted larvae in the semi field study. We found that termites colonized pats from cattle treated with ivermectin more readily compared to controls (p < 0.001). Compared to control pats, the treated pats' wet weight decreased more slowly on day 15 (p < 0.001), day 30 (p < 0.001), and on day 45 (p = 0.037). Percent dry weight increased over time and similarly between the treatments as water content decreased. Organic matter of the 10g sub samples was similar between the treatments. Total organic matter in the whole pats showed significant differences on day 15 (p < 0.001), and day 30 (p = 0.003), but not on day 45 (p = 0.291). Qualitatively, we observed that pats from treated cattle had less insect larvae activity as compared to controls in the field study. In the semi field study, we counted less larvae in the pats from ivermectin-treated cattle than in the control pats (p < 0.001). Our results indicate that ivermectin and its residues affect dung degradation and dung fauna in tropical savanna settings, and the environmental safety may be at risk upon mass drug administration in livestock. / Master of Science in Life Sciences / Ivermectin is a drug commonly used in livestock and humans to control most parasitic infections. Malaria is a disease transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes and prevalent in tropical regions mostly the sub-Saharan Africa. There are efforts worldwide to reduce transmission of malaria such as the used of insecticide treated bed nets as well as use of repellents and spraying insecticides indoors. These efforts are challenged by insecticide resistance in mosquitoes, change in mosquito behavior as well as remaining malaria cases after such interventions are applied. With such challenges comes a need to use ivermectin which has the ability to kill mosquitoes. Despite its great potential, evidence from temperate regions record that ivermectin affects the environment by decreasing dung insect activity, affecting the developmental process and causing a delay in dung decomposition. These effects cause cattle to avoid such pasture areas, resulting in an increase in pest pressure and affecting the economy in general. In the tropics where malaria is prevalent and plans are in place to use ivermectin in mass drug administration for mosquito control, there is a need to look at the environmental impact of the drug. We placed 1 kg dung pats from ivermectin-treated and control cattle to determine the effect of ivermectin on dung degradation and dung fauna in Tanzania. For the dung degradation study; at 15, 30 and 45 days after pats were placed in the field, we observed a total of 220 dung pats. We measured termite colonization; wet weight of the entire pat; water content; dry weight of the 10 g subsamples and organic matter from subsamples and the whole pat. For the dung fauna study, we collected fresh dung 3,10 and 29 days post treatment and put the pats out in the field to be colonized by insects before being transferred to emergence traps. We also did a semi field study where pats were collected 1,2,3 and 5 days post treatment to obtain larvae counts. We qualitatively assessed insect larvae activity in the field experiment and observed and counted larvae in the semi field study. We found that termites colonized pats from cattle treated with ivermectin more readily compared to controls, and treated pats' wet weight decreased more slowly. Dry weight of dung increased as water content decreased with no differences between the treatments. Organic matter of the subsamples did not differ in the treatments but the average mass of organic matter of the individual dung pats decreased slower in ivermectin-treated pats. Qualitatively, we observed that pats from treated cattle had less insect larvae activity as compared to controls in the field study. In the semi field study, we counted more larvae in control pats than the ivermectin pats. Our results indicate that ivermectin and its residues affect dung degradation and dung fauna in tropical savanna settings, and the environmental safety may be at risk upon mass drug administration setting.

The response of the habitat and functional groups one year after dam removal : Nianån and Gnarpsån

Lindsten, Madeleine January 2019 (has links)
Dams are a typical example of how watercourses are being used, especially for production of electricity. Negative consequences that follows are that the character of the watercourse is altered, which in turn affects the composition of organisms. In the summer of 2017, a hydroelectric plant was removed in Nianån. A project started with the purpose to investigate the effects on benthic fauna, one year after the removal. In this study, the watercourse Gnarpsån was also used as a control. It was assumed that the proportion of silt and sand, as well as the water depth had decreased while the water velocity had increased in the habitat of the former reservoir in Nianån. It was also assumed that a change in the density of the benthic fauna should have occurred in Nianån, downstream in the riffle. The abundance of organisms with a burial lifestyle should have decreased in the habitat of the former reservoir, while the abundance of scrapers and filters should increase in the riffle. The result showed few significant physical changes. A difference in substrate composition could be seen in Nianån, however it was the proportion of fine substrates that increased in all habitats (gravel, fine gravel and sand). The water velocity was unchanged in Nianån, and the depth only decreased in the flowing habitat upstream. In both watercourses, 38 different families of macroinvertebrates were found. The proportion of burial animals in the habitat of the former reservoir decreased significantly, but no change in the total density was found. A possible effect may already have been recovered, or more time may need to pass before expected results can be seen. Many factors affect the conditions in the watercourses. To be able to provide better general predictions about the effects of dam removal, further studies are needed, both at the organism level and with a large-scale approach to get a uniform picture of this restoration measure. Många faktorer påverkar förhållandena i vattendragen.

Determinant factors of decomposition process in São Paulo State forests

Castanho, Camila de Toledo 05 August 2005 (has links)
Composition is an important indicator of functional patterns of ecosystems, as it controls basic processes related to the availability of nutrients and to ecosystem productivity. Climatic and edaphic conditions and the quality of the litter and soil fauna as determining factors are of particular importance in the process of decomposition. The significance of each one of these varies with spatial and temporal scale. The objective of this work was to evaluate the importance of certain determining factors of decomposition in sites representing the main forest ecosystems of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. To accomplish this, two independent experiments were conducted. The first, denoted here as the “Exotics" experiment, was to examine the effects of the type of forest and the soil fauna on the decomposition of leaves of an exotic species (Laurus nobilis L.) in two humid forests (Restinga Forest of the Parque Estadual da Ilha do Cardoso e Atlantic Forest of the Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho) and a seasonal forest (Semideciduous Forest of the Estação Ecológica de Caetetus). The effects of these factors were tested above and belowground, to simulate the environment of decomposition among leaves and roots respectively. The type of forest had a significant effect over fauna above the surface, while below the surface, only fauna had significant effect. These results indicate that the hierarchy of determining factors in decomposition differs between leaves and roots. If on the one hand decomposition in leaves is much more susceptible to variation in climate than are roots, on the other hand changes in the soil fauna affect decomposition in both environments. Above the surface, fauna had a significant effect only in the Atlantic Forest, emphasizing the difference between two humid forests. Under the surface, and in the absence of fauna, the percentage of remaining biomass was very similar in the three forests. Notwithstanding differences in the forests, the presence of fauna was apparent, suggesting that there is a specific contribution of fauna in decomposition among roots in these forests. The Restinga Forest produced the most pronounced effect of fauna below the soil surface. These results indicate that fauna is a factor of notable importance in the decomposition of roots, especially in humid sandy tropical forests. The other experiment, here called the “Native" experiment, was developed to evaluate the effects of the substrate and the forest type on the decomposition of leaves of four native species in sites of the four major forest types in São Paulo state. The experiment was conducted in the same three forest sites as the “Exotics" experiment, including the Cerradão da Estação Ecológica de Assis. A tree species was chosen in each forest type, the leaves of which were used as substrate for the litter bags. The type of forest and the substrate demonstrated a significantly greater effect on the quantity of remaining mass throughout the experiment. The majority of the species suffered greater losses in the Atlantic Forest, followed by the Restinga Forest, the Semideciduous Forest, and the Cerradão. These results suggest that the total associated precipitation and its distribution are important determinants in the process of decomposition. As such, the two most humid forests show, on average, decomposition rates twice as great as the two seasonal forests. The rest of the differences encountered between forest types can be explained by edaphic and biotic factors. With respect to the effect of the species, the greatest biomass losses were observed in Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl., followed by Copaifera langsdorfii Desf., Guapira opposita Vell. and Calophyllum brasiliensis Camb. Chemical parameters only show significant negative correlation with decomposition rates when G. opposita is excluded from the analysis. In this case the percentage of lignin was the parameter that showed the greatest correlation (r2= 0,59). In spite of the general patterns presented above, the interaction between forest type and substrate showed some variation, principally related to the loss of mass of C. langsdorfii in its native habitat, the Cerradão. Comparing decomposition rates (k) found in the Semideciduous Forest and Cerradão, C. langsdorfii shows a decrease of 40% more in the Cerradão, while the other species show, on average rates 28% lower in the Cerradão than in the Semideciduous Forest. These results suggest a strict correlation between the decomposition community and the local litter. Understanding processes of decomposition, is of fundamental importance and includes recognizing the determining factors and the variation in the importance of these factors under different environmental conditions, as presented in this study. This is true not only for our understanding of the forest ecosystems of São Paulo, but also for management planning, restoration, and conservation.

(Viannia) guyanensis and Le. (V.) braziliensis. In addition to these, two other Leishmania species were identified from lesion biopsies: Le. (V.) shawi and Le. (Le.) amazonenses. The disease was most common among males (81.6%) e and persons living in rural areas (75.7%). This is the first record of Le. (V.) shawi and Le. (Le.) amazonenses in Acre.

Thus, it was investigating the contemporary tendency of personality attribution and rights for the animals, addressing the legal concept of person, the position of the traditional doctrine on the theme and the main arguments developed by philosophers like Peter Singer, Tom Regan and Gray Francione. It was established that the difficulty on the issue of animal rights derives from three factors: speciesism, the anthropocentric approach to the right and the dominant culture that animals are things, devoid of any rights. This study had the foundation the change implemented by current Brazilian Constitution that ensured the basic right of the animals are not subjected to any form of cruelty, Article 225, Paragraph 3, Item VII, allowing the recognition of the awakening of constitutionalism environmentally-friendly design that brings a new valuation beings and holistic thinking as moral foundation, leaving behind the absolute belief in the superiority of the human species forward to other living beings. We must go beyond the anthropocentric model. The sustentation of a minimum right the subsistence of all animals make to emergence new fundamental rights such as the inherent rights in all animals, which must be incorporated into the dimension of the concept of dignity. It should be stressed here that as the right is thought in terms of the persons, it's time it was including other subjects in order to build a new dimension of these fundamental rights, expanding the protection of this principle to reach the animals. To enrich the discussion and illustrate it, a judicial review of the issue at the national and international law was carried out, because where there is a solid constitutional theory endorsing the interpretation and application of constitutional norms, usually results in the emergence of a constitutional jurisdiction active / Esta dissertação pretende oferecer um novo significado jurídico para a fauna através do estudo profundo da Teoria Constitucional Ambiental.

Zanzini, Antonio Carlos da Silva 06 June 2001 (has links)
The present research work was carried out from consultations to the material of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) approved by the Fundação Estadual do Meio Ambiente de Minas Gerais (State Foundation of Environment of Minas Gerais) over the period encompassed between 1986 and 1999. The objective of the research work was to proceed an evaluation of the agreement of the studies about the biotic mean contained in the EIS consulted with the legislation which furnishes the basic guidelines for it execution and with the technical-scientific guidelines for the study of the mean in issue. In the development of the research work were evaluated the studies of the non-aquatic wild flora and fauna, contained in a sample representative of 111 ElAs belonging to 5 sectors and 25 sorts of activities. The studies about the flora were evaluated by means of the use of 7 legal variables subdivided into 36 items and 15 technical variables subdivided into 67 items. In the same way, the studies on fauna were evaluated through the use of 7 legal variables subdivided into 36 items and 15 technical variables subdivided into 67 items. In whole, each EIS selected for the research work was assessed by means of the analysis of 44 variables subdivided into 206 items. The results obtained revealed that the studies upon the biotic mean contained in the Environment Impact Statement do not meet satisfactorily the legal demands foreseen in the disciplining regulation of the subject, both at the state and federal leveI. Neither, they meet the basic technical-scientific recommendations commended for the accomplishment of studies on the mean in issue. As far as the agreement is concerned with the legislation, the early failures were found in the legal variables concerned with the environmental diagnostic of the influence area of the impacting enterprise; with the proposition of mitigation measures and with the proposition of monitoring programs of the impacts. As regards the meeting of the technical-scientific recommendations, were identified consistent failures in the technical variables related with the range of the length of the studies; the observation of seasonality, samplal effort and replication of the sampling over the execution of the studies; the content of the listings of species presented in the studies; the comparison with previous studies performed at the regional or state level; the accomplishment of analyses based on the species vulnerability; the undertaking of analyses based on the application of ecological indices; the use of multivariate analyses, distribution patterns and of species-abundance in the accomplishment of the studies and the number of experts present in the team performing the studies. Those results point out, that the studies on the biotic mean conducted in the EIS present doubtful quality in the aspects concerned as far as the legal and technical-scientific rigor are concerned, and imposes the need that such studies be reviewed with more criterion by the environmental organ and be presented protocols with greater technical-scientific fundamentals for their accomplishment.

Diversity of edaphic ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in fragments of the Atlantic Forest of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Macedo, Luciano Pacelli Medeiros de 18 February 2005 (has links)
This research deals with the diversity of ants in three forest fragments (Cananéia, Ibicatu, and Pariquera-Açu) of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The insects were collect by using an aluminium cylindrical device introduced into the litter and the soil layer (0 to 5 cm deep) around the base of Euterpe edulis trees. The ants were then taken to the laboratory, pin-mounted and identified. The data were submitted to the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The faunistic, equitability (E) and similarity indexes, and the diversity by the Shannon-Wiener (H) method, were calculated through the ANAFAU program. The estimated species richness, the number of singleton and doubleton species and the accumulation curve of species were calculated by the EstimateS program. The ants were separated into guilds, based in biological aspects. The analysis of sufficiency sampling of each forest fragment indicated that Cananéia and Pariquera-Açu were more homogeneous than Ibicatu. The number of samplings were not sufficient to caracterize the environments for the collector curve did not stabilized. The ants were grouped into nine guilds, being three of them considered new ones. Broadly speaking, the results provide data for the taxonomic and ecological knowledge of ant species occurring in some parts of the São Paulo State Atlantic Forest.
