Effect of season of harvest and site quality on hardwood regeneration on the Virginia Piedmont

Kays, Jonathan 12 March 2013 (has links)
Many existing Piedmont hardwood stands are composed of trees that are largely under 45 cm in diameter and contain a desirable oak component, as well as large amounts of undesirable red maple and sourwood. In stands under even-aged silviculture, season of harvest can be used as an effective management tool to favor different species compositions. If oak or other hardwood production is the management objective a dormant season harvest will result in increased sprout vigor of all oak as well as non-oak species. If pine conversion is the objective then a growing season harvest will reduce the vigor of all hardwood species and allow for easier competition control. The higher densities of all classes of regenerants on better sites indicates control will be more difficult. / Master of Science

Grazing, disturbance and plant soil interactions in northern grasslands

Sørensen, L. I. (Louise Ilum) 03 June 2009 (has links)
Abstract Plants and soil organisms are closely linked. Plants are the sole source of carbon in the soil and soil organisms are responsible for recycling of nutrients, making them available for plant growth. To understand the function of a system, it is important to understand the interactions between the soil and plants. These interactions have mainly been studied in temperate areas, with few studies in the arctic and subarctic. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effect of ecological disturbances in sub- and low-arctic grasslands on soil organisms and plant-soil feedback relationships. The effect of removal of vegetation, replanting of a local plant species, and different components of grazing (trampling, defoliation and return of nutrients) on soil decomposer organisms were studied. Whether short term effects of defoliation depended on plant species community was also studied, as well as whether defoliation in the field could create changes in the soil system systems that affect the growth of seedlings. Experiments were conducted under both controlled greenhouse conditions and in field sites. The results showed that physical disturbance (removal of vegetation and trampling) reduced the abundance and diversity of soil biota. Defoliation increased soil decomposer abundance in the short term. Plant species composition did not affect soil biota and only in a few cases did it changes their responses to defoliation. In the long-term, effects of fertilization and defoliation on the soil biota were context-dependent. However, defoliation did create changes in the soil that reduced the growth of seedlings planted into the soil. Furthermore, plant species community and spatial heterogeneity (revealed by blocking) had important effects on the soil communities.

Applications of Advanced Analytics to the Promotion of Freemium Goods

Runge, Julian 06 October 2020 (has links)
“Freemium” (free + premium) has become a workhorse pricing model in the digital economy: A basic version of a product or service, e.g., mobile applications (“apps”), can be used for free in perpetuity and premium upgrades are available against payment of a fee. Consumers downloaded apps 194 billion times in 2018 and spent $101 billion on in-app purchases in the same time period. Accounting for almost 80% of that revenue, gaming in particular has seen an unparalleled expansion of demand. It is estimated that 50% of mobile app users play games regularly and that a global total of 2.4 billion people will play mobile games in 2019. The core thesis of this dissertation is that promotions are essential to the marketing of freemium goods such as mobile apps and games. While freemium already represents a promotional pricing tactic in using a zero price for free sampling, the author conjectures that firms can operate their freemium offerings more profitably by using further promotional tactics, especially targeted and personalized promotions, to sell premium upgrades. The author also argues (and shows) that widespread concerns around the use of promotions, particularly developed in the setting of consumer packaged goods, do not apply in the same way in this setting. This thinking is qualified and developed across four chapters that represent individual papers after providing an introduction to the work in the first chapter. The work is empirical in nature and applies advanced analytics, in particular field experimentation and machine learning, in collaboration with firms. As representative of the freemium app economy, the collaborating firms observe dense user data that enable the author to both derive insights on consumer behavior that extend existing conceptual thinking in the field of marketing and to devise decision support and expert systems that allow firms to operate more profitably in this setting.

Dishonesty: The role of rewards, professional identity and experimenter purpose disclosures

Rahwan, Zoe 03 June 2022 (has links)
When and why do people decide to behave dishonestly? By understanding dishonest behaviour, policy makers are better able to deter such behaviour and to support a thriving society and economy. The study of dishonesty has flourished in recent years, driven by the establishment of crowd-sourced labour platforms, though some important field work has also emerged. The empirical findings from these studies have supported the emergence of new economic and psychological models to explain dishonest behaviour. Yet, how replicable and generalisable are leading experimental findings? And what other contextual factors -- like the nature of reward, scale of reward, and design choices from the experimenter-- may drive dishonest behaviour? The central focus of this thesis was the attempted replication of a heavily cited paper in academia and the popular press. Previous replication efforts by-passed this work given the challenge of accessing professional participants. The paper which we attempted to replicate found that only bankers whose professional identity was made salient behaved dishonestly. This work was based on the notion that priming, or making salient one aspect of an individual’s identity and the associated norms, would affect behaviour. As priming professional banking identity prompted dishonesty, this was concluded to be indicative of problematic norms in the banking sector. Though it was unclear if this finding would hold with other banks, for example in the same or other jurisdictions, in different segments (e.g. commercial versus investment banking), and over time.

Evaluation of Iron (Fe) and Zinc (Zn) concentration among selected potato (Solanum tuberosum) genotypes in South Africa

Managa, Lavheselani Rodney 10 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Potato is an important source of energy to most micronutrient malnourished affected population in South Africa. Improvements through bio-fortification can therefore enhance access to essential micronutrients. The study was aimed at determining the level of variability of iron and zinc concentration among 20 potato genotypes as a preliminary step for future breeding program. The materials were evaluated using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Statistical analysis indicated significant (P<0.001) variation of Fe and Zn among the genotypes. The average concentration ranges from 34.67 to 76.67 mg kg-1 and 12.88 to 66.1 mg kg-1 for iron and zinc respectively. The best performing genotypes were cultivar Mnandi, Hertha, Buffelspoort and breeding lines-N105-1, 00-S100-33 and 03-627-50. Iron concentration was positively correlated with Zinc concentration. The study showed that enough variability of Fe and Zn concentration exist among the evaluated genotypes, which can be exploited for use in potato bio-fortification breeding programme. / Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology / M.Sc. Genetics and agronomy of transient salinity in Triticum durum and T. aestivum.

Cooper, David Seth January 2005 (has links)
Title page, table of contents and abstract only. The complete thesis in print form is available from the University of Adelaide Library. / Transient salinity in soils is characterised by high concentrations of salts in the subsoil. Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. Var. durum) is less tolerant of transient salinity than locally developed bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) varieties, and this results in reliable durum production being restricted to relatively unaffected soils. Field trials were conducted to assess the relative impact of transient salinity, boron toxicity and bicarbonate on crop production and highlighted the importance of combining tolerance to all three subsoil constraints into varieties intended for widespread adoption; and if the area of durum production is to be expanded. The Na exclusion locus from the landrace Na49 was found to improve the adaptation of durum to sites affected by transient salinity and is now being intogressed into a wide range of breeding material. / http://proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/login?url= http://library.adelaide.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=1152134 / Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Agriculture and Wine, 2005

Pressions de sélection exercées par les résistances génétiques du melon sur les populations d’Aphis gossypii / Selection pressures exerted by the genetic resistances of melon on Aphis gossypii populations

Thomas, Sophie 10 May 2011 (has links)
The adaptive response of pest populations to selection pressures exerted by agricultural activities determines the sustainability of control methods. In melon, the Vat gene that confers resistance to Aphis gossypii has been deployed for over 10 years, so there are fears it will be overcome. The challenge is to provide strategic elements to plant breeders, concerning the risk of development of virulent aphids, in order to develop new varieties with durable resistances. In the context of this PhD, we have : i) Estimated the available genetic diversity in populations of A. gossypii from different melongrowing areas. The diversity is structured geographically. The great diversity observed in France would have its origine in part from the events of sexual reproduction, suggesting a high evolutionary potential of A. gossypii. ii) Estimated the selection pressure exerted by different resistance combinations (Vat gene and QTLs) on these populations. Population densities are lower on VatR plants than VatS plants and population genetic structure is altered in certain growing areas when the VatR gene is present. The clones multiplying on VatR plants have good fitness and the risk of their spreading is great. No effect of QTLs has been identified in the field. iii) Characterized the clones overcoming the VatR gene. Our results suggest that the adaptation of clones made either by alteration of the avirulence gene of aphids or by adaptation of aphids toresistance effectors. New strategies for Vat resistance management are proposed.
