Kapitálové kontroly a jejich dopad v krátkém a dlouhém období / The capital controls and their impact in the short and long term

Papežík, Ondřej January 2015 (has links)
The present thesis analyzes the application of capital controls and their impact on the economy in the short and long term. These regulatory measures have gone through many periods and opinions in which they were considered as both positive and negative instrument not only of monetary policy. Global financial crisis of 2008 has again raised a lot of questions dealing with this topic. Capital controls may help ease the acute problems associated with inflows or outflows in the short term but they will not solve the issue of the country's susceptibility to movements of primarily debt capital. Long-term capital closeness (whether in terms of export or import) may causes, inter alia, the excessive accumulation of savings in the domestic closed economy or lack of capital for economic development. Therefore, when applying capital controls it is also necessary to improve the country's institutional quality which proved to be an important determinant of capital flows.

Hastreiter, Uwe 24 September 2009 (has links)

Selection in a spatially structured population

Straulino, Daniel January 2014 (has links)
This thesis focus on the effect that selection has on the ancestry of a spatially structured population. In the absence of selection, the ancestry of a sample from the population behaves as a system of random walks that coalesce upon meeting. Backwards in time, each ancestral lineage jumps, at the time of its birth, to the location of its parent, and whenever two ancestral lineages have the same parent they jump to the same location and coalesce. Introducing selective forces to the evolution of a population translates into branching when we follow ancestral lineages, a by-product of biased sampling forwards in time. We study populations that evolve according to the Spatial Lambda-Fleming-Viot process with selection. In order to assess whether the picture under selection differs from the neutral case we must consider the timescale dictated by the neutral mutation rate Theta. Thus we look at the rescaled dual process with n=1/Theta. Our goal is to find a non-trivial rescaling limit for the system of branching and coalescing random walks that describe the ancestral process of a population. We show that the strength of selection (relative to the mutation rate) required to do so depends on the dimension; in one and two dimensions selection needs to be stronger in order to leave a detectable trace in the population. The main results in this thesis can be summarised as follows. In dimensions three and higher we take the selection coefficient to be proportional to 1/n, in dimension two we take it to be proportional to log(n)/n and finally, in dimension one we take the selection coefficient to be proportional to 1/sqrt(n). We then proceed to prove that in two and higher dimensions the ancestral process of a sample of the population converges to branching Brownian motion. In one dimension, provided we do not allow ancestral lineages to jump over each other, the ancestral process converges to a subset of the Brownian net. We also provide numerical results that show that the non-crossing restriction in one dimension cannot be lifted without a qualitative change in the behaviour of the process. Finally, through simulations, we study the rate of convergence in the two-dimensional case.

Lambda-Fleming-Viot processes and their spatial extensions

Saadi, Habib January 2011 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the study of certain stochastic models arising in Population Genetics. The study of biological evolution naturally motivates the construction and use of sometimes sophisticated mathematical models. We contribute to the study of the so-called Lambda models. Our work is divided into two parts. In Part I, we study non-spatial models, introduced in 1999. Although there is a very rich literature concerning the description of genetic diversity thanks to the genealogies arising in these models, we obtain new results by considering the dynamics of the full population. We also contribute by presenting the first Bayesian method that allows us to reconstruct the genealogies generated by these models from data. In Part II, we study a recent extension of these models to the spatial setting. In particular, we prove a non trivial result concerning the geographical dispersal of a new mutant under this model.

Adapting The End: Responding to Standards of Learning in Theatre for Children

Lish, Jamie 01 May 2009 (has links)
Theatre is the passport to the creation of a balanced educational system in the United States (US), while standardized testing is the downfall of the ideology behind ‘No Child Left Behind’ (NCLB). As an educator, I was greatly influenced by Howard Gardner, theorist of Multiple Intelligences and Neil Fleming theorist of learning modalities. This work has carried over into my work in theatre as a director. Theatre does not have to didactically serve formal education, which emphasizes mathematics and reading/writing, nor does it have to be merely a spectacle. Theatre can be experimental, artistic, cathartic, foster social and intrapersonal skills and increase intelligences in all areas for children and adults. The adaptation of the children’s book The End by David LaRochelle into a play for children demonstrates the potential that lies within the art of theatre to be more than just entertainment. Furthermore, my work on the adaptation of The End was greatly influenced by my research and participation in the production of Pinocchio with Ohio Valley Summer Theatre in the fall of 2008. From this production, I gained considerable knowledge on the topic of Commedia Del’ Arte which impacted my work on my own production The End.

Entre logos et eros. La topique de la bouche dans la littérature allemande du XVIIe siècle : un parcours / Between logos and eros. The topos of the mouth : a progress into the 17th century German literature

Faux, Bruno 20 December 2012 (has links)
While in Europe the culture of anatomy that characterizes the Early Modern Age has brought about a new kind of artistic and poetical images of the body, the mouth imposes itself as one of the most frequently represented parts of the body in the German literature in the 17th century. As the medium of speech but also of sensuality par excellence, it is considered by some as what is most prodigious in man beside his understanding, so much so that it has emerged in poetical works as a bounteous and fruitful topos. Presented as a noble instrument as soon as it respects moral rectitude, the mouth may also be featured as “ig-noble” as soon as it corrupts the language and the body through ungodly acts. The present study focuses on what comes to be – within this topos – the logos-eros dialectics, rooted in former theological and anthropological assumptions, ensuing the denominalization of cultures that triggered religious tensions. And through the close analysis of this dialectics, the research work unveils the workings of the build up of a German artistic literature. By relying on the exemplary career of its major writers – from Opitz to Hoffmannswaldau – and different kinds of literary works (drama and poetry), the thesis finally enhances how a new system of poetical representations going along with an ambivalent primacy of the logos is set up, with as a backcloth some gradual changes in literary landmarks and paradigms.

The aim of this research is to rebuild the path followed by Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) in his studies on microbiology, from 1908 to 1921, when he identified an enzyme related to the natural immunology of living beings. This dissertation contains an introduction and five chapters. Chapter 1 deals with Fleming s first bacteriological investigations, in cooperation with Almroth Wright (1861-1947). Besides that, it deals with Fleming s prescriptions for skin infections. Chapter 2 analyses Fleming´s contributions concerning the SALVARSAN therapy. Chapter 3 presents Fleming´s research on the treatment of infected injures got during the First World War, as well as, the experiments on microorganisms performed by him. Chapter 4 describes Fleming s research on secretions and tissues, concerning the identification of an important enzyme related to the natural immunology. Chapter 5 provides some final remarks on the subject. This study showed that Fleming was very cautious in methodological terms. It led to the conclusion that although Fleming had been trained under Wright and several of his contributions were part of a collective work, this was not the case concerning the identification of lysozyme. This Fleming´s original contribution changes the view that was accepted at that time / Na virada do século XX, diversos cientistas estavam investigando as doenças infecciosas.

Gilles, Pierre 04 November 2011 (has links) (PDF)

“I should think what politics he has are just a little bit left of center”:An analysis of James Bond’s personal ideology

Alshamani, Afrem January 2020 (has links)
Ian Fleming’s debut novel Casino Royale (2015) introduces the iconic character James Bond. The savvy British spy who must save the world from Soviet villain is a cultural icon the world over. Yet not much is known of his personal political leanings. Fleming once claimed that James Bond’s politics lies just left of center. In this essay I analyze where James Bond lies on the left-right political scale by using Cichoka & Dhont’s (2018) “Big-five personality model”.Research has been made about the contextual, historical and political settings of the Bond novels such as Jeremy Black’s (2001) “The politics of James Bond: from Fleming's novels to the big screen” which serves as a complement to this research. Black’s (2001)claims suggest that Britain struggled for dominance after The Second World War as they were financially in ruin and although Britain lost some of its colonies, they still had many territories under their control. However, with the rising power of the Soviet Union, the nationalistic feeling in Britain grew as their reputation as a powerful empire needed to be upheld. Therefore, a need for a strong British symbol grew, which also acted as a reason for why Fleming created James Bond. The essay concludes that James Bond represents a specific part of Great Britain. The analysis has shown James Bond is a product of his time by symbolizing the longing for the return of the great British empire. This is supported by the fact of him scoring low on categories such as Agreeableness and Openness combined with the fact that he harbors anti-Communist beliefs. The analysis show that he acts in a manner that would highlight the colonial days of Britain where their strength had not yet diminished as opposed to the times after the Second World War. As such, the actions of James Bond, together with his explicit views suggest that he lies slightly more towards the right on the political scale and thus, disputesthe claim of Ian Fleming.
