Enslaved under the elements of the cosmos

Clark, Ernest P. January 2018 (has links)
When Paul writes ‘we too were enslaved under the elements of the world', he means that the elements that compose the cosmos also compose and compromise the flesh and enslave human persons through their bodies (Gal 4.3). This thesis demonstrates that early Jews used the phrase στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου to refer to the material elements – earth, water, air, and fire – and not to elemental spirits or elementary principles. Greek medical tradition understood the material elements to mediate the stimuli (παθήματα) and desires of the body which enslave the soul, and it prescribed a variety of regimens (including νόμος) as παιδαγωγοί to guide a person to wholeness. In his philosophy according to the cosmic elements, Philo promotes the law of Moses – including circumcision and the calendar – as the effective way to be ‘redeemed from slavery' to the flesh, to attain righteousness, and to live in harmony with the cosmos. Paul's epistle to the Galatians opposes this sort of ‘redemptive nomism'. Paul accepts that weak στοιχεῖα compose the weak σάρξ and that they mediate sinful stimuli and desires that lead to the actions of the flesh. However, he denies that the law can make people alive or righteous. Instead, Paul prescribes crucifixion with Christ and new life with the Spirit as the final cure for sin's infection of the flesh made of weak στοιχεῖα. Through faith, Christ will be formed in believers as the Spirit guides them away from the desires of the flesh and produces his fruit in their lives.

No. of bitstreams: 1 PGPV11MA076.pdf: 421773 bytes, checksum: 6fbf2a3579e5da5aa39372d361a40b76 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-07-22 / The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of spraying apple trees with prohexadione-calcium (ProCa) (na inhibitor of gibberellins synthesis) and gibberellin (GA₃) on vegetative growth, yield potential, fruit quality, and occurrence of bitter pit in the fruit. The experimente was conducted in na orchard located in São Joaquim, Santa catarina State (Southern Brazil), in 2009/2010. catarina and Fuji apple trees were sprayed with water (control), ProCa and gibberellin (both products at the dose of 319 mg L¯¹), at the petal fall stage (October 15, 2009), when shoots were 5-10 cm long, with treatments repeated after 20 days. Leaves were assessed (in termsmof chlorophyll contente, área, dry mater and specific área) in January/2010, and length of current season shoots and weight of shoots removed by winter pruning were assessed in May/2010. The number of flower buds ando f fruit per flower bud were assessed in October/2009 and November/2010, respectively. Fruit were harvest at comercial maturity and then assessed for percentage of red skin área, skin color, density, weight, skin and pulp textures, flesh firmness, titratable acidity (TA), solids soluble contente (SSC) and starch index. Fruit were cold stored (0±0.5°C/90-95% RH) for four months, followed seven days for simulate marketing (20±4°C/60-70% RH) for four months, same evaluation carried out at harvest, as well as for incidence (%) and index of bitter pit. Trees treated with ProCa had higher leaf chlorophyll contente and lower specific leaf área in Fuji , lower leaf área in Catarina , lower shoot growth in both cultivars, and lower weight of shoots removed by winter pruning in Catarina , in the year following the treatment of the trees, both cultivars sprayed with ProCa had lower fruit set. the ProCa incresead the red color in Catarina apples. At harvest, the force for pulp penetratoon in the red side of the fruit was incresead in apple trees of both cultivars sprayed with ProCa. After cold stored, Fuji apples of trees sprayed with GA₃ had lower flesh firmness, while Catarina apples of trees sprayed with ProCa had higher firmness. Fruit Ca contente was not diferente between ProCa and GA₃ and between ProCa e the control in both cultivars. Fuji apples from trees treated with ProCa had lower N/Ca ratio in the skin tissue. Teh treatment with ProCa incresead the flesh firmness in the reddish fruit side and reduced the index of bitter pit during cold storage in both cultuivars. The use of ProCa in apples orchards might represent a new technology to reduce trees vegetative growth and the occurrence of bitter pit in the fruit.

The construction of subjectivities in the chronicles of Pedro Lemebel

Navarrete, Carolina 19 June 2015 (has links)
The objective of this study is to analyze the construction of various subjects in the chronicles of the Chilean writer Pedro Lemebel. The dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and the implementation of neoliberalism have profoundly transformed Chilean society. The author retrieves these transformations from the subjects who participate in this reality, and who have no real place in the institutional, literary and artistic discourse. We meet cross-dressers, prostitutes, homosexuals, street children, vagabonds, mentally disturbed individuals, and women from the slums. We want to demonstrate how these invisible subjects represent the discursive strategies invoked to highlight the processes of subjection imposed by the economic, political and social system. Furthermore, how do these strategies emphasize corporeality as a means of resistance discourse or even possibly a political force? The research is based on three lines of thought. We discuss the questions of whether the author is the textual space most conducive to explore the individual subjects. We then address the mode of subjection and constitution by subjects (subjectivity) at the fringes of society. These groups have made desire and memory their fundamental principles. Finally, we study the various text strategies related to the concept of “nomadic theory” and “resistant body”. Thus, we analyze the notion of being nomadic as part of one’s identity, bodily metamorphosis, the dominance of the flesh and the transformation of the imaginary order issued from the corporeality. Theoretically, we take as reference the work of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Rosi Braidotti

La mise en jeu du personnage-figure dans la représentation contemporaine / Playing the character-figure in contemporary performance

El Riachy, Marc 06 April 2010 (has links)
The fact that, in some contemporary theatre, characters have no distinctive fictional identity indicates that the dramatic being is an indeterminate figure. This study is concerned with the effects of this development on actors’ performances. How can the actor begin to perform in the absence of any characterisation or psychology in the character-figure? How does he produce an image of a character that no longer possesses any readable or “visible” form in a stage directions? How does he embody a creature that is at once discontinuous, a-temporal and invisible? How does he produce a set of variations on his own presence without revealing his own individuality? Drawing on three philosophical concepts, “being-flesh”, “mode of being” and “total presence”, this study analyses actors’ performances in a number of productions put on in France between 2005 and 2007, in order to draw out the different aesthetics involved in playing a character-figure, and thus to show what happens when the word no longer belongs to the character but to the actor. In the theatre of the character-figure, rather than playing a character, the actor plays with the character. The character is no longer an object we observe, but an act we grasp in the total presence of its being-flesh in its various theatrical modes of being.

Pojetí těla a ducha v židovském sapienciálním díle Musar le-mevin / The Concept of Flesh and Spirit in the Jewish Sapiential Work Musar le-Mevin

Pelíšková, Lenka January 2020 (has links)
The thesis aims to examine and refine the concepts of flesh and spirit in Musar le-Mevin, discussing Jörg Frey's hypothesis of the possibility to derive Paul's concept of sarx from Palestinian sapiential literature, in light of recent advancements in the field. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the term baśar and its relationship to sin, knowledge and election. The second part focuses on the term jeṣer, its possible translation and the role it might have played in the development of the concept of jeṣer ha-raʿ as an evil agent. The third part analyses the term ruaḥ and describes how the sapiential composition develops its specific view of the spirit. The last chapter attempts to locate the text in relation to other intertestamental views of flesh and sin. Finally, the thesis discusses the possibility of studying Musar le-Mevin as a background to Paul's anthropology. The thesis suggests that the text develops an idea of allotted shares of the spirit which determine a person's position and fate. It also attempts to describe how this view incorporates ruaḥ baśar as a designation for those who were not given the knowledge of good and evil. The term baśar might be understood as the outcome of a fusion of the traditional Biblical connotations of fleetingness and earthliness with a pessimistic...

Nové tělo? Hranice těla ve filmech Davida Cronenberga / New Flesh? The Limits of the Body in the Films by David Cronenberg

Hladonik, Jan January 2011 (has links)
Diploma work New Flesh? The Limits of the Body in the Films by David Cronenberg deals with the human body as one of the main motives in the filmography of the Canadian director David Cronenberg. Its mission is to implicate new approaches to the human body in the theories of postmodern philosophy, philosophy of media and posthuman therories, which fundamentally transform the principles of previously applied concept of body and mind dualism and point out that media and new technologies has a significant influence on our perception of a human body. New approaches to the human flesh and fleshliness are applied in the final part of this work through the interpretation of selected movies by David Cronenberg - Videodrome and eXistenZ. The main point of this work is to show the complete change of conception and perception of the human flesh, which is summary reviewing here as a "new flesh". Key words body - controlled body - body extension - reality - hyperreality - media - new technologies - cyborg - post-human - body horror - new flesh

Theorizing & (re)discovering the Self : An autoethnographic & affect-theoretical approach to swedishness & colombianness

Rodriguez Alvarez, Daniela January 2022 (has links)
This thesis is structured as a feminist creative endeavour, a practice of self-love that aims at exploring (my) depression as a cultural and social phenomenon caused mainly by an inability to correctly embody swedishness, a constant haunting of a colonial and Colombian past, and the affective dimensions of language. This text is based on autoethnographic material about the experiences of being a Colombian-born migrant in Sweden and uses mainly affect theory and decolonial theory to make sense of these experiences. The thesis showcases my temporal relation to both swedishness and colombianness and how that dimension influences the (re)production of my self, and the consequent “negative feelings” linked to depression I experience. Furthermore, as a creative endeavour following the tradition of WOC feminist writers, this thesis highlights how writing and theorizing can lead to healing.

St-Laurent, Mei-Ra 19 April 2018 (has links)
Extreme metal, derived from heavy metal, remains often singled out because of the music and subjects viewed as transgressive and which, a priori, communicate a disjointed violence. However, in recent years, several musicologists have been interested in the potiential of narratology for the analysis of popular music; the song is then considered as a true narrative, where musicians communicate their own conception of the world. In this thesis, I propose to perform a musicological and narratological analysis of four songs known as transgressive and derived from extreme metal, namely “Mad Architect” (Septicflesh), “Her Ghost in the Fog” (Cradle of Filth) “When the Joyful Dead are Dancing” (Unexpect) and “Puritania” (Dimmu Borgir). These analyses will enable a better understanding of the internal musical structure and narrative, and the different aesthetic codes governing this repertoire.
