It becomes essential, from the standpoint of Psychology, the development of studies correlating the Folia with personal values and the meaning of the Folia in different religious groups and participants. This study assumes that the recovery and preservation of immaterial and material heritage is characterized as the very meaning of humanity. 300 people participated in the estudy. The instruments of measurement were: Significance Scale of Folia de Reis adapted Factorial Attitude Scale (Osgood, Suci & Tannembaum, 1957), to measure the sigficance of Folia de Reis and Portrait Questionnaire (Pasquali and Alves, 2004) to assess personal values. For data analysis, descriptive analysis and Anova, with the support of SPSS 14, was used. It was found that the values of pacifism and tradition, peace-and-respect coupled with the positive meaning of Folia de Reis influence in preserving it. / A Folia de Reis é considerada um ritual cultural do folclore brasileiro que tem sofrido consequências de mudanças significativas ocorridas na atualidade. Torna-se imprescindível, sob o enfoque da psicologia, desenvolver estudos que relacionem a folia com os valores pessoais e com o significado atribuído à ela por diferentes grupos religiosos e seus participantes. Este estudo parte do pressuposto de que a valorização e preservação do patrimônio imaterial e material caracteriza-se como o próprio sentido da humanidade. Participaram da pesquisa 300 pessoas. Utilizaram-se como instrumentos de medida: Escala Fatorial de Atitude (Osgood, Suci & Tannembaum, 1957), para mensurar o significado da Folia de Reis e o Portrait Questionnaire (Pasquali e Alves, 2004) para avaliar os valores pessoais. Para análise dos resultados foi utilizado a Análise Descritiva e a Anova, com o suporte do programa SPSS-14. Constatou-se que os valores como pacifismo e tradicionalismo, paz-e-respeito aliados ao significado positivo da Folia de Reis influenciam na preservação da folia de reis.

A motivação inicial da pesquisa que deu origem a esta tese partiu da constatação de que apesar de haver uma grande quantidade de máscaras em diversas manifestações da cultura popular brasileira, como as Folias de Reis, elas dificilmente são utilizadas de forma sistemática na cena teatral. A intenção foi verificar como os "modos do atuar as máscaras" e os "modos do pensar o mascaramento" nas manifestações da cultura popular brasileira poderiam contribuir para o campo de pesquisa sobre atuação com a máscara teatral. Para isso, proponho um diálogo entre os saberes tradicionais de manifestações como as Folias de Reis e os saberes formais do campo das artes cênicas e da antropologia, para pensar questões relacionadas à tradição e criação, arte e devoção, agência e simbolização, no intuito de que sejam estabelecidos pontos de aproximação e distanciamento entre estes dois universos. The research was focused on the universe of the masked performers of the Folias de Reis in Fidalgo and Matozinhos, Minas Gerais. The research first impulse that resulted in this Thesis began with the verification that even if there are a great amount of masks in diverse Brazilian popular culture performances such as Folias de Reis, they are rarely systematically used on theatre performances. The purpose was to verify how the "ways to perform masks" and the "ways of thinking masking" in the Brazilian popular culture performances could contribute to the field of research on acting theatre mask. In order to do this, I present a dialogue between the Folias de Reis? traditional knowledge and the formal knowledge of the performing arts and anthropology fields of studies. By presenting such a dialogue, my intentions are to reflect about questions related to tradition and creation, art and devotion, agency and symbolization, having the purpose to establish points of approximation and distance between those universes. The first consists in analyzing the history and the development of Folia de Reis Estrela do Oriente, a folk festival which originated in the rural area of Itaberaí, Goiás, in the early 20th century. It was transferred to Goiânia in 1962 and revived in Aparecida de Goiânia in 2004. In 2008, the festival was temporarily transferred to Setor Pedro Ludovico, in Goiânia. The second objective focuses on the festival s songs based on the repertoire of songs expressing arrival, alms-begging, acknowledgements, and departure, as well as on table blessings and rosary chants. By using verse scores and lyrics, the festival s musical expression was analyzed via systems from Goiás and Minas Gerais. / Este trabalho tem um duplo objetivo. No primeiro momento procura-se estudar a história e o desenvolvimento da Folia de Reis Estrela do Oriente que se originou na zona rural, no município de Itaberaí, Goiás, no início do século XX. Em 1962 a folia foi transferida para Goiânia, sendo reanimada em 2004, com sede em Aparecida de Goiânia. Em 2008, a sede foi transferida para o setor Pedro Ludovico, em Goiânia, em caráter provisório. No segundo momento serão analisadas as cantorias, a partir do repertório das cantorias de chegada, de pedido de esmolas, de agradecimentos, de saída; dos benditos de mesa ou agradecimento; e os cantos do terço. Por meio de partituras e letras dos versos se analisará a forma de expressão musical da folia em estudo, a partir de dois sistemas: Goiano e Mineiro.

Neste trabalho estudamos a dinâmica da organização de uma Folia de Reis do Estado de São Paulo, a Folia de Reis dos Prudêncio, da cidade de Cajuru. Mais do que a dinâmica em si, nos ocupamos do estudo das toadas que são cantadas durante os seis dias da Folia, ou seja, entre os dias 1º e 6 de janeiro, quando celebramos o culto aos Três Reis Magos que no Brasil encontra um grande veículo de devoção. Nos embrenhamos por diversos estudos da área que desde a década de 1940 encontra representação na literatura. Contando com um grande acervo de registros desta Folia, i.e., fotografias, gravações de áudio, vídeo, depoimentos de participantes e matéria de periódicos, transcrevemos as cinquenta toadas identificadas em seu repertório, procurando refletir sob a luz da etnomusicologia: como \"funciona\" esta música, sob o ponto de vista bi-musical, considerando os aspectos da música, da cultura, daquele grupo e daquela sociedade em particular, e da relação de cada um com a devoção que enfeixa a Folia dos Prudêncio durante seis dias de todos os meses de janeiro, desde 1982. / In this work we study the dynamics of the organization of a Folia de Reis of the State of São Paulo, Folia de Reis dos Prudêncio, from the city of Cajuru. Nessa época diversas festas acontecem por todo o país. Em Pernambuco já existem focos históricos de animação como o bloco do Galo da Madrugada, os palcos distribuídos pelo Recife Antigo e as fantasias das Ladeiras de Olinda. No interior chama a atenção a Folia do Papangu, uma festa conhecida pela presença dos Papangus, pessoas com o corpo inteiramente coberto por tecido e máscaras. Essa festa acontece desde o início do século passado e passou por diversas mudanças e hoje ela se configura como uma das maiores festas carnavalescas de Pernambuco. É um acontecimento repleto de referências culturais históricas da região oferecidas com o trato de um grande evento. As atrações da festa exercem um fascínio naqueles que a presenciam. A pesquisa então foca em entender como se dá esse encanto e a teoria zizekiana sobre o gozo no capitalismo orientou essa busca. Os foliões procuram na festa o gozo, que é estruturado pela fantasia. Observou-se tal experiência como construção sociohistórica e a análise de discurso foucaultiana foi adotada. Como resultados foram encontradas duas formações discursivas complementares que permitem o entendimento do funcionamento do gozo e da fantasia na Folia do Papangu. / Carnival is an outstanding time in brazilian calendar. Many festivities happen all around Brazil in this time. In Pernambuco there has been historic feasts such as Galo da Madrugada, Recife Antigo shows and the fantasies of Olinda. Bezerros, a small city of Pernambuco, draws attention with the Folia do Papangu feast. It is known as place where people covers themselves with fantasies and masks – the Papangu. Folia do Papangu is now one of the greatest feasts in Pernambuco. There, turists experiment an event full of historic and cultural elements with the profissioalism of a big spetacle. Folia do Papangu creates some kind of fascination. This research aims to understand this enchantment. For this, Zizek’s enjoyment theory was used. The people in this event seeks for enjoyment, wich is structured by fantasy, an ideia they have of reality. The research understood such an experience as discoursive and the Foucault’s discourse analysis was adopted. As result, two complementary discoursive formations rose and lead to the understaning of enjoyment and fantasy at Folia do Papangu

Based on a dialectic and historical orientation, mainly, with the contributions of Antonio Gramsci and authors linked to the theoretical and methodological perspective of Marx, it was led the investigation process with procedures and used resources by the bibliographic and empiric research of ethnographic type. Answering to the challenges of the problem previous delimitated, we decided to divide the exposition in four distinct and complementary chapters. Initially, we present a reflection about the concepts and essential implications to the understanding of the thematic referred, specially, in relation to the particularities and senses that hold the terms culture, esthetic, art and education. Based on the reference of Gramsci, we develop, at the second chapter, the analysis of some aspects of the complex social-cultural context in which the life and the knowing of the denominated simple man are processed. The third chapter deals with the deciding, social-historic and contradictories concepts, related to the religion, devotion and tradition phenomenon. At the last chapter, when we articulate the several concepts, we also analyze the aspects that involve a concrete educative situation and shared by worshipper artists of Santos Reis in their courses, meetings and singing moments around the neighborhoods in Goiânia, aiming the comprehension of the mediations, appropriation and socialization of the artistic knowing produced on a determined social-cultural context with their continuities and ruptures. At this research, it was noticed the understanding of the education as an essential phenomenon of constitution, appropriation and transformation of the popular culture, like a social practice historically sited and interested, returned to the concretization of certain desires and attitudes, makings and knowings, ways of being and living, which demands symbolic and material mediations, social interactions and mutual helping, constant repetitions and improved masteries. Besides, it was confirmed the necessity of deepening about the education that it is processed in different moments and spaces of the social life. / Este trabalho é resultado de uma pesquisa sobre a educação estética de devotosartistas que integram as Companhias de Santos Reis do Jardim das Aroeiras e do Jardim Primavera, situadas em Goiânia, Goiás. Vincula-se à linha de pesquisa Educação, Trabalho e Movimentos Sociais, da FE/UFG. Com base num referencial de orientação histórico-dialética, sobretudo, com as contribuições de Antonio Gramsci e de autores vinculados à perspectiva teórico-metodológica marxista, encaminhou-se o processo de investigação com procedimentos e recursos utilizados pela pesquisa bibliográfica e empírica do tipo etnográfica. Respondendo aos desafios da problemática previamente delimitada, optou-se em dividir a exposição em quatro capítulos distintos e complementares. Inicialmente, apresenta-se uma reflexão dos conceitos e pressupostos essenciais ao entendimento da referida temática, especialmente, em relação às particularidades e sentidos que comportam os termos cultura, estética, arte e educação. Com base no referencial gramsciano, desenvolve-se, no segundo capítulo, a análise de alguns aspectos do complexo contexto sociocultural em que se processa a vida e o conhecimento do chamado homem simples. O terceiro capítulo aborda os aspectos definidores, sócio-históricos e contraditórios, relacionados com o fenômeno da religião, devoção e tradição. No último capítulo, articulando os diversos conceitos, analisa-se aspectos que envolvem uma situação educativa concreta e compartilhada por devotos-artistas de Santos Reis em suas jornadas, encontros e cantorias pelos bairros do município de Goiânia, tendo em vista a compreensão do processo de mediação, apropriação e socialização do saber artístico engendrado em um determinado contexto sociocultural com suas continuidades e rupturas. Na pesquisa evidenciou-se o entendimento da educação como fenômeno essencial de constituição, apropriação e transformação da cultura popular, assim como, uma prática social historicamente situada e interessada, voltada à concretização de certas vontades e atitudes, fazeres e saberes, modos de ser e viver, à qual demanda mediações simbólicas e materiais, interações sociais e ajuda mútua, constantes repetições e aperfeiçoados domínios. For this, take the specific case of revelers group of San José do Morumbi, Go, seeking to highlight the close link between faith and life. The definition of terms such as ritual music and inculturation, as these are understood by contemporary theology, also occupy a prominent place, relating to, whenever possible, with current anthropological discussions, historical and cultural. The main result is intended to foster dialogue between culture and religion, through music, as privileged access, as well, notably to contribute to the theoretical support necessary for the further work of composing liturgical and musical repertoires inculturated in Goiás. / O presente trabalho visa investigar a relação entre música ritual e inculturação e oferecer fer-ramentas para a elaboração de repertórios litúrgico-musicais específicos para a celebração do culto cristão católico, a partir dos elementos estético-culturais inerentes à Folia de Reis, e em consonância com os critérios fundamentais da liturgia romana. Para isso, toma o caso especí-fico do grupo de Foliões de São José do Morumbi, Go, procurando realçar o estreito vínculo entre fé e vida. A definição de termos como música ritual e inculturação, tal como estes são compreendidos pela teologia contemporânea, também ocupa um lugar de destaque, relacio-nando-se, sempre que possível, com as atuais discussões de cunho antropológico, histórico e cultural. Como principal resultado, pretende-se favorecer o diálogo entre cultura e religião, por intermédio da música, como via privilegiada de acesso, além, notadamente, de contribuir com os suportes teóricos necessários para o ulterior trabalho de composição de repertórios litúrgico-musicais inculturados em Goiás.

This thesis reviews the background, influences, and evolution of the body of work entitled Folia, which forms the basis for the candidate's thesis exhibition. It traces the development of the candidate's artistic inclinations from drawing to photography. Directorial and Pictorialist photography are discussed as forebears in the Influences chapter. Evolution of the Body of Work details how the current work grew from both the candidate's background and influences. A Brief Anthology of Quotations references Susan Sontag's influential work, On Photography, with quotations that have either influenced the candidate's work or reflect his perceptions of art and life. The balance of the thesis describes the candidate's working process in creating the work, and the installation at VCU's Anderson Gallery.
