Genericamente, esta tese busca identificar a relação entre arquitetura e cultura de consumo, como definidora da identidade da arquitetura moderna de Miami no segundo pós-guerra. O conceito de cidade-balneário de Miami Beach foi transformado durante o decorrer da sua história. Os seus hotéis de inverno de meados da década de 1910 até 1945--destinados aos milionários associados à indústria automobilística--dão lugar a uma nova tipologia de hotel no pós-guerra, o hotelbalneário para a classe média norte-americana. Especificamente, este trabalho analisa os hotéis-balneários de Morris Lapidus (1902-2001) em Miami Beach na década de 1950, que definem a identidade da arquitetura moderna da cidade e que, por sua vez, caracterizam a sua própria imagem como cidade-balneário. A obra do setor da hospitalidade de Lapidus surge como informante de uma arquitetura com atenção máxima à escala humana do usuário. Suas lojas, construídas na época da Depressão, e seus hotéis do segundo pós-guerra, meticulosamente projetados para a classe média, surgem como veículos que contribuíram para a formação da cultura nacionalista, otimista e progressista, incentivada pelo governo federal de Franklin Roosevelt nesses períodos históricos. A histórica polêmica gerada sobre essa obra hoteleira de Lapidus, associada aos paradoxos presentes na composição arquitetônica de seus edifícios, está dividida entre a dogmática interpretação moderna do International Style e a leitura pós-moderna centrada na recuperação humanista. A narrativa da tese está fundamentada nessa polêmica cujo cerne está na questão sobre gosto e qualidade em arquitetura instigada por essa obra controversa. Este trabalho interpreta os paradoxos desses hotéis-balneários como uma metodologia de projeto de Lapidus, centrada na dialética de elementos de projeto contrastantes. Dessa dialética compositiva, nasce uma arquitetura híbrida, acessível à emergente classe-média, consumista e móvel, do pós-guerra. Esse hibridismo é estrategicamente elaborado como metodologia de projeto--uma colagem. A arquitetura como colagem nasce das escolhas de elementos extraídos de fontes diversas, que são apropriados e recriados pelo arquiteto. A diversidade de fontes de projeto advém da circulação de ideias--exposições, publicações e viagens. O apogeu da carreira de Lapidus é o hotel Fontainebleau (1954), o primeiro edifício do arquiteto de interiores que foi validado pelo seu conjunto de lojas da Main Street norte-americana. Os interiores derivam do método de projeto desenvolvido para as suas lojas, enquanto que a arquitetura do Fontainebleau descende da obra formativa de Oscar Niemeyer. The concept of Miami Beach as a seaside resort has been transformed throughout its history. Its winter hotels from the mid-1910s to 1945--intended for the auto industry millionaires--are replaced by a new typology of post-war hotel, the hotel-resort for the American middle class. Specifically, this work examines Morris Lapidus (1902-2001)\' hotel-resorts in Miami Beach in the 1950s, which define the identity of the city\'s modern architecture and which, in turn, characterizes the image of the city as a seaside resort. Lapidus\' hospitality industry work emerges as an informant of an architecture with maximum attention on the user\'s human scale. Its stores, built in the Depression era, and its post-war hotels for the middle class, both meticulously designed, have emerged as vehicles that contributed to the formation of the optimistic and progressive nationalist culture encouraged by the Franklin Roosevelt federal government in these historic periods. The historical polemic generated on such Lapidus\' hotel work, associated with the paradoxes present in the architectural design composition of its buildings, is divided between the dogmatic modern interpretation of the International Style and the postmodern review, centered on the rediscovery of humanism. The narrative of the thesis is based on this controversy, whose core is the question about taste and quality in architecture instigated by this controversial work. This work interprets the paradoxes of these hotel-resorts as a Lapidus\' design methodology, centered on the dialectic of contrasting design elements. From this compositional dialectic, a hybrid architecture is formed, accessible to the emerging middle-class, consumerist and mobile, of the second postwar. This hybridism is strategically planned as a design methodology--a collage. Architecture as collage is assembled from the choices of elements drawn from diverse sources, which are appropriated and recreated by the architect. The diversity of project sources comes from the circularity of ideas--exhibitions, publications, and travel. The heyday of Lapidus\' career as an architect is the Fontainebleau Hotel (1954), the first building by the then interior designer, who was validated by its collection of American Main Street stores designed during the Depression. The Fontainebleau Hotel interiors are derived from the design method developed for his stores, while its architecture descends from the formative work of the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The tropical modern architecture of the Fontainebleau established the typology of the post-war Miami Beach hotel-resort, which in turn redefined its seaside resort concept. After half a century, Miami\'s modern hotel architecture, originated with the Fontainebleau Hotel, is \"preserved\" under the slogan Miami Modern-MiMo. In the third millennium, the MiMo, transformed into a consumer brand, is the real estate vehicle for the preservation of the modern architecture in Miami.

Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, pédagogues et pouvoirs publics attendent des élèves musiciens étrangers formés à Paris qu’ils deviennent, selon une expression d’Henri Rabaud, directeur du Conservatoire, « les plus utiles propagateurs de la culture française » : par leurs déplacements, ces musiciens voyageurs assureraient la diffusion internationale de techniques musicales et de partis pris esthétiques français. Nous confrontons ce transfert culturel désiré à sa réalisation. La correspondance des institutions avec les pouvoirs publics souligne d’abord les enjeux que recouvre la venue de ces élèves en France. Les archives des écoles de musique, partiellement inédites, alimentent ensuite une base de données prosopographique identifiant les apprentis étrangers. La presse musicale et les récits de vie témoignent enfin de l’insertion de ces jeunes artistes dans la vie musicale parisienne et internationale, et permettent d’évaluer l’efficacité des mesures prises en faveur des élèves étrangers. / During the interwar years, foreign music students trained in Paris are expected from teachers and public authorities to become « the most useful propagators of French culture », according to director of Conservatoire, Henri Rabaud’s words : through moving abroad, those traveler musicians shall spread musical techniques and French aesthetical bias all over the world. We are confronting this cultural transfer to its fulfilment. First, the correspondence between institutions and public authorities emphasizes issues caused by these students coming to France. Then, the partly unpublished archives of music schools form a prosopographic data base identifying foreign young musicians. Musical press and life stories finally attest that these young artists are integrated in parisian as well as international musical life, and allow also to estimate the effect of measures in favour of foreign students.

Competing constructions of nature in early photographs of vegetation : negotiation, dissonance, subversion

While the role of photography in enforcing hegemonic ideologies has been amply studied, this thesis addresses the under-researched topic of how photography undermined dominant narratives in specific historical circumstances. I argue that, in the later part of the long nineteenth century, photographs were used to represent the natural world in contexts where their functions were uncertain and their capacities not clearly defined, and that these hesitations allowed for the expression of resistances to dominant social attitudes towards nature. I analyse how these divergences were articulated through three independent case studies, each addressing a corpus of photographs which has been marginalised in scholarly discourse. The case studies all concern photographs of vegetation. The first one discusses photographs produced around Fontainebleau during the Second French Empire, commonly understood as auxiliary materials for Barbizon painters, and argues that they were in fact autonomous representations, reflecting marginal modes of experiencing nature which resisted its prevailing construction as spectacle. The second case study examines a photographic series depicting Amazonian vegetation, published between 1900 and 1906, and shows how, in attempting to satisfy conflicting ideological demands, these photographs undermined the hierarchies enforced upon the natural world by colonial science. The third case study analyses photographs from an early twentieth-century environmentalist treatise, and demonstrates how, while the author's discourse seemingly complied with conventional attitudes towards nature, the photographs instituted an ethical stance opposed to early conservation's aesthetic focus and anthropocentrism. Throughout the case studies, I argue that the photographs were consubstantial to the emergence of these resistances; that dissenting representations stemmed from a tension between their producers' lived experience and the ideological frameworks which informed each context; and that this process engendered remarkable formal innovations, which are not usually associated to non-artistic images. I contend that radical renewals of visual expression occur in all representational contexts, as image producers adapt their tools or forge new ones according to circumstances, and that more attention must be paid to such visual innovations outside the field of artistic production.

Activité prisée des rois de France depuis l'époque médiévale, la chasse était devenue pour les derniers Bourbons plus une passion dévorante qu'une simple distraction. Louis XV et Louis XVI furent critiqués par l'opinion publique naissante, qui considérait que leurs chasses onéreuses les éloignaient du gouvernement. Après la chute de la monarchie, les chasses royales disparurent. Elles furent remises au goût du jour par Napoléon Ier, soucieux de s'approprier les apparences de la légitimité monarchique. Le maréchal Berthier fut ainsi nommé Grand veneur en 1804. Grâce à lui, Napoléon put faire de ses chasses un instrument politique puissant, une distraction de Cour prisée, le tout avec une économie substantielle de moyens. La Restauration, au lieu de revenir à l'organisation d'Ancien Régime, choisit de conserver l'équipage de chasse et l'administration mise en place pour Napoléon, qui fonctionnèrent jusqu'en 1830. Naquit ainsi le paradoxe d'une Restauration affichant, à la suite de l'Empire, la volonté de renouer avec la tradition monarchique, mais cela grâce à un équipage formé pour Napoléon. C'est cette continuité, humaine, budgétaire, mais aussi politique et symbolique qu'il convient d'étudier au travers des éléments constitutifs des chasses : une implantation autour de Paris permettant une circulation de la Cour autour de différentes résidences de chasse, une pratique régulière destinée à la distraction du souverain et de ses proches, des invitations de personnages politiquement importants, qui donnent à certains jours de chasse bien précis une résonance particulière. Autant d'aspects qui se retrouvent dans les sources : archives, journaux, mémoires, œuvres d'art. / Hunting had always been the privileged activity of kings since the mediaeval period, and for the later Bourbons it became a consuming passion. Indeed Louis XV and Louis XVI were to be criticized by a proto public opinion ; it was thought that hunts were expensive and that they distracted the rulers from the duties of government. The royal hunts disappeared with the fall of the monarchy. But Napoleon, with his desire to appropriate the outward show of monarchical legitimacy, brought it back. Marshal Berthier was appointed Grand veneur and given the task of organizing the imperial hunt in exactly the same way as it had been done under Louis XVI. Napoleon made the hunts a powerful political instrument and a Court indulgence whilst at the same time making considerable savings. The Restoration in fact chose not to revive Ancien Régime customs but preserved the Napoleonic hunting administration. This gave rise to the paradox of a Restoration attempting to reinvigorate monarchical traditions but using structures created by Napoleon. This is that strong continuity, human, budgetary, but also political and symbolic, inside a geographical field concentrated around Paris that made it possible for the Court to circulate around the different imperial hunting residences, to dedicate certain days to the hunts, and to invite some important political figures. All of these aspects are to be found in the sources : archives, newspapers, autobiographies, artworks.
