A computerized content analysis of Oprah Winfrey's discourse during the James Frey controversy

Stephens, Maegan R. January 2008 (has links)
This analysis utilizes the computer-based content analysis program DICTION to gain a better understanding of Oprah Winfrey's specific discourse types (praise, blame, and standard) and her language surrounding the James Frey Controversy. Grounded in Social Influence Theory, this thesis argues that is important to understand the language styles of such a significant rhetor in society because she has the potential to influence the public. The findings indicate that Oprah's discourse types differ in the level of Optimism her language represents and that the two episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show relating to the James Frey Controversy differ in terms of the Certainty. Also, this thesis provides a new application of the program DICTION and the implications for such procedures are discussed. / Department of Communication Studies

Music on the Edge of Silence

Snow, Kyle, 1992- 05 1900 (has links)
This paper presents a discussion of functional silence in contemporary classical music with a particular focus on the music of Salvatore Sciarrino and Jürg Frey, two composers whose drastically-contrasting bodies of work both occupy the interstitial space between the audible and inaudible. To begin, I address three main questions: what are the functions of silence in a musical context, how do the characteristics of a work affect our perception of these silences, and how do these functions relate to our perception of music on the edge of silence. In answering these first two questions, I discuss three categories of silence---temporal, spatial, and gestural---which I use in a silence-centric analyses of Sciarrino's Let me die before I wake, Allegoria della notte, and Infinito Nero, as well as Frey's Streichquarttet III. To further apply these concepts to music on the edge of silence, I provide a fourth category---timbral silence---which describes the perception of absence or silence within the presence of sound and allows for the application of existing functional principles of silence to sounding events. In turn, this allows us to understand the music of Sciarrino and Frey in terms of timbral completion and timbral dissolution, respectively. Having established a theoretical framework for understanding the function of silence, the second half of this paper discusses the composition of A Moment on the In-between, my 2018 work for string quartet, with a focus on the intentional application of these principles of functional silence within the piece.

Med lätt hand : Att använda bildspråk och lyriska drag i lättläst skönlitteratur / Approachable imagery : On the use of metaphors and poetic language in Easy Language literature

Söderling, Åsa January 2024 (has links)
This Bachelor’s thesis in Creative Writing examines how to use metaphors and poetic language in Easy Language/Easy Readers novels. The purpose is to find out how a poetic approach to Easy Language can contribute to a more artistic and literary way of writing, while still keeping in mind the target readers of the text. These readers often face challenges when it comes to reading texts written in standard language. The method includes an analysis of two Easy Language novels in Swedish, Vilhelm Moberg’s Sista brevet till Sverige retold by Johan Werkmäster and Det som inte får hända by Emma Frey-Skøtt, as well as experimentation with writing a new text. The conclusion is that there are many ways to use metaphors and poetic language without making the text more difficult. / <p>C-uppsats i Kreativt skrivande</p>

Frösöns offerträd : En symbios av två kulturer? / The sacrificial tree of Frösö: : A symbiosis of two cultures?

Gillberg, Moa January 2021 (has links)
The sacrificial tree of Frösö: A symbiosis of two cultures? This bachelor thesis deals with the site of what has been interpreted as the remains of a sacrificial tree under the church of Frösö, on the island of Frösö. The found material consists predominantly of animal bones, where a large part has been identified as wild animals such as brown bears, but also a large number of juvenile pigs. Previous research has interpreted the place as an Old Norse place of worship to the Norse god Frey, due to the rich numberof pigs and the islands theophoric name (translated to “The island of Frey”). The unusual wild animals, such as squirrels and red deer have been interpreted as a staging of the ancient world tree Yggdrasil in Norse mythology. The overrepresentation of bones from brown bear however has been debated and is often compared to Sami bear graves. There are some similarities to the bear graves, but the differences that exist needs to be looked at more closely. The aim is to process materials and interpretations in a more holistic way. This is done by discussing various ritual acts, belief system and the choice of place of worship and sacrificial material, then apply this to the findings under the church of Frösö. Since such a large part of the bone material descents from brown bears, the use of bears in various cult practices has also been studied. The aim of this study is to provide new insight and interpretation of which ethnic groups may have used the site, before the church was built. The discussion concludes that a symbiosis is possible in the vicinity of the island, and that it is therefore not unlikely that this also applies to the island of Frösö. The found material under the church of Frösö could be remnants of a bear ceremony, but it could also be remnants from a more economic aspect or simply a mixture of the two. The bear was important financially in the Norse society and a Sami influence, based on their customs and beliefs, is not entirely unlikely given the close contact that existed. This could therefore have been symbolically incorporated into the religious rites.

Great land ownership concentration in Brazil has persisted throughout its history because of a long waited agrarian reform which has never happened. This study aims at reflecting about various public policies adopted by different governments focusing on agrarian settlement policy. The study is the result of a research that hopes to contribute for Brazil‟s agrarian policy which was carried out at Frey Vantuy rural settlement located along the Itabuna-Ilhéus highway, in the southern region of Bahia. There were identified in this region the first experiences made with rural settlement in the state focusing on agro-ecology and sustainable development via cooperatives. It is, therefore, intended to reveal the management mechanisms adopted by the settled people so far and present a new form of rural management.
