Web-based front-end design and scientific computing for material stress simulation software

Lin, Tien-Ju 12 January 2015 (has links)
A precise simulation requires a large amount of input data such as geometrical descriptions of the crystal structure, the external forces and loads, and quantitative properties of the material. Although some powerful applications already exist for research purposes, they are not widely used in education due to complex structure and unintuitive operation. To cater to the generic user base, a front-end application for material simulation software is introduced. With a graphic interface, it provides a more efficient way to conduct the simulation and to educate students who want to enlarge knowledge in relevant fields. We first discuss how we explore the solution for the front-end application and how to develop it on top of the material simulation software developed by mechanical engineering lab from Georgia Tech Lorraine. The user interface design, the functionality and the whole user experience are primary factors determining the product success or failure. This material simulation software helps researchers resolve the motion and the interactions of a large ensemble of dislocations for single or multi-layered 3D materials. However, the algorithm it utilizes is not well optimized and parallelized, so its performance of speedup cannot scale when using more CPUs in the cluster. This problem leads to the second topic on scientific computing, so in this thesis we offer different approaches that attempt to improve the parallelization and optimize the scalability.

Design of a Power Scalable Capacitive MEMS Accelerometer Front End

Tse, Colin 19 March 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the design, implementation and fabrication for a 0.13μm interface to a capacitive MEMS accelerometer. By varying the number of amplifier slices used in concurrence based on different full scale input ranges, the analog circuitry power scales as the input range scales. Due to the oversampling nature of typical accelerometer front ends, for a full-scale input increase of N times, the analog circuitry power reduces by N2 times. The front end has two signal amplification stages, with the first stage power scaled. The chip is 1.15mmx1.15mm and implemented in a 0.13μm CMOS process. The design was packaged with the MEMS accelerometer chip inside a 44 pin CQFP. Measured results show an output rms noise of 63μVrms in a 100Hz bandwidth. The total analog circuitry power scales very linearly with different full scale ranges. A novel simple offset removal network is also shown and confirmed via measurement results.

Écoles de musique en Grande Guerre / French Schools of Music in the Great War

Mastin, David 19 December 2012 (has links)
When the First World War started, the French national schools and the French conservatoires of music were not the most likely institutions to participate in the war effort. Meanwhile, in Paris or in Calais, in Toulouse or in Lille (throughout occupation), the teaching of music continued. This study shows how the teaching of music in France got involved in the war effort. The diversity of the initial situations leads to many different ways of adapting to the conditions of war. Teachers and their students participated in the construction of a musical war culture: you had to banish the enemy's music whilst fortifying your own.The part played by the schools of music in the war-time works shows how the obligations of war were adapted to the local situation. The music teachers, whether they were soldiers or other mobilized personnel on the Home front, made huge conscious sacrifices that were not rewarded by the expected improvements, after the armistice and despite a collective mobilization. Nevertheless, the First World War convinced people of the utility of music as it reinforced the national pride and it was a tool for propaganda.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose: France’s Front National from 1984 to 2017

Jones, Ashleigh 01 January 2018 (has links)
This paper analyzes the evolution of the Front national (FN), a French political party on the far right, from its initial breakthrough victory in 1984 all the way through to its unprecedented showing in France’s 2017 presidential election. The most obvious change it explores is that of leadership, seeking to determine in what ways the ‘original’ FN controlled by its founder Jean-Marie Le Pen (1972-2011) differs from the party’s ‘new’ incarnation under his daughter Marine Le Pen (2011-present). It begins by examining the makeup and motivations of the party’s electorate in the 1984 elections to the European Parliament, and by identifying the FN’s ideological predecessors more broadly. With a focus on the turning-point presidential elections of 2002, 2007, and 2012, the paper then follows the development of the party’s rhetoric, strategy, and supporters since the 1980s, as well as how it is perceived by the wider public. Throughout, attention is paid to unique factors that have impacted the FN’s trajectory, such as the gender difference between Jean-Marie and Marine, former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s courting of right-wing voters, and the influence of terrorism. It concludes by noting the hidden ‘victories’ that the FN has achieved, and with a warning never to underestimate the party, even when it seems to have suffered a loss.

Bandit feedback in Classification and Multi-objective Optimization / La rétroaction de bandit sur classification et optimization multi-objective

Zhong, Hongliang 29 March 2016 (has links)
Bandit problems constitute a sequential dynamic allocation problem. The pulling agent has to explore its environment (i.e. the arms) to gather information on the one hand, and it has to exploit the collected clues to increase its rewards on the other hand. How to adequately balance the exploration phase and the exploitation phase is the crux of bandit problems and most of the efforts devoted by the research community from this fields has focused on finding the right exploitation/exploration tradeoff. In this dissertation, we focus on investigating two specific bandit problems: the contextual bandit problems and the multi-objective bandit problems. This dissertation provides two contributions. The first contribution is about the classification under partial supervision, which we encode as a contextual bandit problem with side informa- tion. This kind of problem is heavily studied by researchers working on social networks and recommendation systems. We provide a series of algorithms to solve the Bandit feedback problem that pertain to the Passive-Aggressive family of algorithms. We take advantage of its grounded foundations and we are able to show that our algorithms are much simpler to implement than state-of-the-art algorithms for bandit with partial feedback, and they yet achieve better perfor- mances of classification. For multi-objective multi-armed bandit problem (MOMAB), we propose an effective and theoretically motivated method to identify the Pareto front of arms. We in particular show that we can find all elements of the Pareto front with a minimal budget.

Fuzzy Front End de inovações sistêmicas: quadro conceitual e estudo de casos. / Fuzzy Front End of systemic innovation: conceptual framework and case studies.

Silvia Mayumi Takey 08 June 2016 (has links)
Systemic innovations are those that require significant changes in co-opetitors within the innovation ecosystems in which they are inserted. The relevance of systemic innovations has grown due to several reasons, such as the systemic characteristic of sustainable development innovation projects, the higher maturity of the network society and the dissemination of open innovation practices. The fuzzy front end, the initial and diffuse phase of the innovation process, has been explored considering mainly dyadic relations between company and consumers. The goal of this dissertation is to explore how does the fuzzy front end differentiate in systemic innovations, in complex innovation ecosystems, considering the need for coordination with external entities outside the control of the focal company. Therefore, the methodology has three macro-steps: a systematic literature review of fuzzy front end and systemic innovation, a pilot case study and exploratory case study with intra and cross-case analysis in different positions in the Smart Grid business ecosystems.
