EntasisFunkquist, John January 2023 (has links)
This report discusses my exam project Entasis through four short essays. Through the project I have investigated and demonstrated how knowledge of and responsiveness to the properties of wood can generate a system for design and interior architecture. Through the project, I have described this process as a formulation of a material language, vocabulary or dialect. The metaphor of the dialect is used to highlight how materials is the language through which design and interior architecture is expressed. The project aims to demonstrate how proficiency in the language of wood makes new expressions - or dialects - possible. One important theme running through the whole work is the concept of invoking design. Through describing the objects I have built as machines, i demonstrate how the properties of wood can be an active part in the genesis of design. Design is generated by the machine through the tension between its parts. The aim of this method is to find designs that cannot be planned and to demonstrate how ideas is not outside the material - they are rather invoked from inside the material. The method is applied on different scales to generate both furniture and architectural elements. Another important theme is Entasis - a word that during the project has changed meaning from historical curiosity to animating force. Through tensioning objects in various ways I try to demonstrate how objects can be simultaneously constructed and animated. The relation between the properties of the wood used and the non - material expression and atmosphere that the tension generates is demonstrated in an architectural system of long, tensioned pieces of wood used in the exhibition that the project was presented in. In the ending reflection the relation between material efficiency and aesthetics is discussed. The outcome of the project is both wood - specific constructions and expressions but also general attitudes towards materiality, in the production of interior architecture and design.

25 lika – 25 olika : – En undersökning i lasergraveringens möjligheter till att återge och skapa egna motiv och dekor på möbler i en nutida kontext / 25 alike – 25 different : – A Study of the possibilities to use Laser Engraving to create motifs and décor on contemporary furnitureSkerfving Stål, Linda January 2023 (has links)
This work is a survey about the cabinetmakers possibilities to use laser engraving for personalised décor in furniture making. I have used analog and digital techniques in a way to take control over the end results of the laser engravings that I make from my patterns and motifs. My motifs and patterns are mainly constructed with a digital pen in a sketch program om my computer. Initially, I did a number of technical tests to learn about the different settings so that I later on could use them to my advantage when I created different motifs. After understanding most of the consequences of different settings I began to adapt my motifs with a conscious planning for how I could use the laser engraving settings to control the final result. In some cases, I have also done some after work in the form of pyrographing or Dremel engraving by hand. Much more are to be desired of those results. My conclusion is that the best results I got were when I used the laser engraving to complete my motifs the way visual artists use their brush, which is what I learned during my work. In addition to the practical work, I have also tried to make a theoretical reasoning about decór and ornament historically and where I fit in today.

PIECES : A sense of the past in a furniture for the futureToijanen, Annika January 2023 (has links)
In pieces I wanted to create a design solution inspired by traditional wooden furnitures. Furnitures, like the kitchen sofa with built in storage and a place to sleep or the lockable free-standing linen cabinet that held hand crafted treasures safe and clean inside. Furnitures that are large in size and can be hard to fit into smaller homes today but that holds a huge sentimental value to the owner and are often handed down through generations as heirlooms. So what if I could weave in a piece of my own family history into a design solution that can fit in smaller living spaces while still be an attractive choice for larger ones? Pieces resulted in two wooden cabinets that tell part of my family history through the repetitative, organic shapes that I have implemented into them. They are a tribute to my grandmother Aino and her three year younger sister Hanna and my way of symbolically reclaiming their right to the land, forests and lakes around their childhood home that the two sisters didn´t get to share with their siblings in the inheritance after my great grandparents. The methods I have used in my research are surveys, workshops, in-depth interviews and my own observations. Major design decisions have been based on the input from my research process with the goal to display two full scale cabinets at Konstfack's spring exhibition in May 2023.

Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to investigate man's use of the mollusk within selected art forms,
and to use the research results to design a contemporary museum exhibition, relevant
within a South African context.
Two sections are presented. In section A the selected art forms, fine arts, architecture,
furniture design, masks and music and other sound instruments are thoroughly investigated
to determine in what way the mollusk/shell is used in or on these art forms. A large
number of figures are included to illustrate the available examples, and to aid the reader in
the visualization of these applications.
In section B a design solution is presented, based on the research results of section A. The
compilation of an exhibition team and the whole design process, from the choice of an
exhibition theme to the evaluation of the exhibition, is investigated. The exhibition
designer plays the important role of interpreting the research results and to compile a
design solution.
A wide variety of exhibition techniques are recommended for the design solution,
including theatre productions, special lighting and sound effects, demonstrations and tours.
A number of figures are included, where photos taken during the museum visitations and
design sketches provide further insight into the design solution.
From the research results it was noted that an educational subject such as the mollusk/shell,
can be made timely and attractive for the museum visitor by the use of creative,
contemporary and relative exhibition techniques.
In afdeling A word die geselekteerde kunsvorme,

An Exploration of the Emerging Original Chinese Design As Found in Select Furniture Design SMEs in ChinaJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: Starting from 21st century BC, China has had strong but isolated philosophies for making things, which dominated the style and spirit of Chinese design. With globalization, however, contemporary Chinese design fell under the influence of Western design including design practice, design theory, and education. Today, by improving capacity for independent innovation, and creating its own brand, China may be able to change its current practices of production that are defined by high consumption of resources, high pollution and low value-add. The search for high-quality Chinese design, which is both original and innovative with unique and identifiable features, has become a vital challenge for the Chinese government, organizations, and companies. Promoting original Chinese design with adding cultural values, in the past decade, has become prominent in various design fields because of the growing need to support economic development, upgrade industrial infrastructure, and promote national identity. In this context, many small-medium, creative and design-focused companies have been established with the goal of pursuing original Chinese design all the while concentrating on Chinese culture and users. In order to understand the present scenarios of original Chinese design, this research examines furniture design in select SMEs in China by studying relevantly critical issues: the motivation of designers for pursuing original Chinese design; the design ideas, practices and business strategies of these SMEs to build original and influential design brand; the challenges and opportunities in the furniture design industry while promoting original Chinese design; and the emerging picture of future Chinese design. This research applies the methodological framework of grounded theory with qualitative research methods including semi-structured interview and in-depth case studies. As a result, regarding interaction among Chinese culture, original design, and entrepreneurship, the research reveals three key findings regarding the interaction among Chinese culture, original design and entrepreneurship. First, “reflect Chinese culture”, particularly essential traditional Chinese culture, is a common ground of original Chinese furniture design, which has been shown both from design ideas and practices of the select SMEs. Second, insufficient entrepreneurship influences the promotion of original design brands both in domestic and international market. Third, innovative design among contemporary furniture designers is constrained by a morass of Chinese culture impediments, such as lacking critical thinking and overemphasizing on inheritance of traditions. Moreover, the research presents a theoretical framework with key implications for developing and promoting Chinese design that is original, innovative and socially impactful. The insights gained from the research also provide a foundation and possible direction for future studies on design, culture, entrepreneurship, and other creative industries both for China and other nations. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Design, Environment and the Arts 2018

Retired Objects : An exploration of our complex relationship to everyday things.Xu, Fann January 2020 (has links)
Retired Objects is a project that explores the intimate relationship we humans form with everyday things. My investigation centers around the questions Can we begin to value objects as our equals, rather than as our servants? and What roles do objects play in our daily lives other than fulfilling a practical function? As a theoretical framework I investigate different facets of our material culture and how we relate to objects, focusing on our emotional connection to them, how we use them as mirror and tools for self-creation, and how being a maker is an integral part of our human identity. Using speculative design methods, I wish to invite us to reimagine our relationship to objects. The result is a series of pre-owned chairs, that I have re-designed, reimagined to envision them in a new light, free from the burden of fulfilling a practical function. Who are they once they retire from their job of serving us? By using design fiction and presenting an alternative narrative I wish to invite us to reimagine the way we relate to everyday objects.
