Candidates, Campaigns, and Political Tides: Electoral Success in Colorado's 4th District

MacColl, Megan Gwynne 01 January 2012 (has links)
The race between Republican Cory Gardner and Democratic incumbent Betsy Markey for Colorado's 4th Congressional District was a partisan fight for political momentum. In the 2010 campaign cycle, Republicans looked to retake the historically Republican 4th District as part of a national strategy to win back the U.S. House, while Democrats tried desperately to hold on to both. Cory Gardner was only one of fifty-four Republican challengers to defeat a Democratic incumbent in 2010, but the Gardner-Markey race is particularly interesting as a case study of voter motivation and the mediating forces, both regional and national, that influence electoral success. Political commentators and staffers from both campaigns describe Markey's defeat as inevitable, but the same sources explain the election results from three different theoretical perspectives: (1) Betsy Markey was a poor fit for the district and never represented constituent interests, (2) Cory Gardner was the perfect candidate, and (3) Markey’s defeat was a result of the national political mood and a referendum on Democrats in Washington. This thesis analyzes and evaluates each of these theories, and concludes that a combination of the arguments and their evidence provides the most complete answer. While no single theory is the definitive reason that voters in the 4th District elected Cory Gardner, each contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the inevitability of Rep. Betsy Markey's defeat in 2010.

Olsson, Emma January 2011 (has links)

Conditions of Dance in Morocco : Interviews and observations of Adults and Children involved in Dance activities in Marrakech

Karlsson, Linda January 2009 (has links)
The overall purpose of this study was to deepen our knowledge about dance in general and about dance activities for children in particular, in Morocco. Consequently, we attempted to gain insight and understanding of the social and political premises to dance in this context. We further intended to study how children were involved in dance activities. A qualitative study was carried out during a stay of eight weeks in Marrakech. Data was mainly collected through participant observations in the field of dance and children and adults were interviewed. In addition, a quantitative based opinion survey was carried out among seven dance teachers. The results showed that in spite of the fact that traditional folk dancing is frequently practiced in the Moroccan culture, there was a difficulty for the art of dance to gain ground. The access to dance activities was limited due to insufficient political and economical support and also because of the social conceptions prevailing in the Moroccan society. However, dance was highly valued by children that took part in dance education. Both children and dance teachers expressed that dancing enhanced the children's self esteem, emotional communication and aesthetic experiences. In the light of the theory of multiple intelligences the respondents foremost referred to the personal intelligence as being promoted by dancing. The perspective of the child did not receive much attention in governmental policies. The access to dance activities for children was much relying on the cultural and economic capital of the family. Among people involved in the general field of dance, the knowledge on dance showed broad and despite the obvious challenges they were eager to continue their work for the art of dance.

Smart på olika sätt : Jämförande studie hur två skolor arbetar efter Howard Gardners lärteori

Ermén Luterkort, Mikaela, Monfors, Mikaela January 2011 (has links)

Multipla intelligenser. Tillämpningar av Howard Gardners teorier i matematikundervisning. / Multiple intelligences. The theories of Howard Gardner applied in mathematic education.

Vesterlund, Jessica January 2002 (has links)

The Undocumented: A Musical Analysis of Three Saxophone Solos of the "Light Music" Era

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The solo repertoire from the Light Music Era serves as an important link between the Classical and Jazz soloist traditions. These characteristics are best highlighted through an analysis of three solo transcriptions: Felix Arndt's Nola as performed by Al Gallodoro, Rudy Wiedoeft's Valse Vanité, as performed by Freddy Gardener, and Jimmy Dorsey's Oodles of Noodles, as performed by Al Gallodoro. The transcriptions, done by the author, are taken from primary source recordings, and the ensuing analysis serves to show the saxophone soloists of the Light Music Era as an amalgamation of classical and jazz saxophone. Many of the works performed during the Light Music Era are extant only in recorded form. Even so, these performances possess great historical significance within the context of the state of the saxophone as an important solo instrument in the wider musical landscape. The saxophone solos from the Light Music Era distinguish themselves through the use of formal development and embellishment of standard "song forms" (such as ABA, and AABA), and the use of improvisational techniques that are common to early Jazz; however, the analysis shows that the improvisational techniques were distinctly different than a Jazz solo improvisation in nature. Although it has many characteristics in common with both "Classical Music" (this is used as a generic term to refer to the music of the Western European common practice period that is not Pop music or Jazz) and Jazz, the original research shows that the saxophone solo music from the Light Music Era is a distinctly original genre due to the amalgamation of seemingly disparate elements. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012
