The value, place and method of teaching natural science in the foundation phaseBosman, Linda 31 March 2006 (has links)
ABSTRACT
The study aims at establishing whether Foundation Phase schooling provides a proper
foundation for the promotion of scientific literacy. Natural Science in the Foundation
Phase is understood as scientific knowledge, process skills, and values and attitudes,
which together should foster scientific literacy. Influential perspectives on learning, and
teaching methods appropriate to Natural Science education in the Foundation Phase,
are reviewed, and the Natural Science Learning Area in the RNCS discussed in the
context of global trends in curriculum development. Finally the findings of an empirical
survey on the perceptions of Foundation Phase teachers with regard to Natural Science
teaching and learning, are presented.
Major findings include the following: (1) Scientific literacy is currently not a curriculum
priority in the Foundation Phase, due mainly to meagre time allocation and lack of
applicable Learning Outcomes. (2) Although teachers appear predominantly positive
towards the Learning Area, significant shortcomings need to be addressed before
Natural Science teaching in the Foundation Phase may claim to provide the required
basis for promoting scientific literacy.

Analysing the use of integrated marketing communication at the View Boutiqu Hotel in Johannesburg, South AfricaMebuge, Chinelo Ogochukwu 07 1900 (has links)
Text in both English and Afrikaans / Since the early 2000s, the tourism industry in South Africa has experienced phenomenal change and, concomitantly, the hospitality industry has also seen significant growth. This growth has been driven by factors such as the increased demand for hospitality in both the leisure and the business markets. The hotel industry has immensely been benefited. The Tourism Business Index’s report released quarterly by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, indicating that the revenue received from each available room in the hotel sector increased significantly from 2009. Tourism research has revealed that, globally, the hospitality industry is among the largest employers of labour. The hospitality industry, especially the hotel sector, works hand in hand with tourism. Tourists traveling to a destination require accommodation which is generally provided by hotels. If the tourist is to have a good experience, it is vital that the tourist organisation and the hotel communicate so as to exchange information. Integrated marketing communication (IMC) has been described as a concept that many organisations adopt in order both to coordinate the operation of the organisation effectively and to increase the bottom line. In IMC, also creates synergy within an organisation and paves the way for consistent messages to be sent out to the organisation’s target audience.
The aim of this study was to analyse the use of IMC by the View Boutique Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. To analyse the IMC at the hotel, in-depth interviews were conducted with both marketing staff and guests. In the aspect of planned messages, the outcome of the study revealed that the hotel uses marketing communication tools on a limited scale and, that to ensure message consistency the manager handles all external communication activities. However, the study also showed that ensuring message consistency should be the responsibility of everyone employed in the hotel. With regard to the product messages, the study showed that guests were negatively disposed towards the food, beverages, entertainment and recreation offered by the hotel. However, the service messages of the study indicated that the hotel’s service quality was good and that the staff were responsive to the needs of the guests. In respect of unplanned messages, the study showed that the hotel was receiving limited coverage from the media and that word of mouth communication was an effective tool in the hotel’s communication toolbox. On the whole, thus, it may be said that the study underscores the centrality of IMC as an instrument for creating and nurturing the relations between the hotel and its quests. It is anticipated that the outcome of this study should provide hotels such as the View Boutique Hotel with guidance in regard to utilising IMC to its full potential to make sure that there is message consistency and also to optimise communication impact.
Communication Science / M.A.(Psychology)

Local government's role in the pursuit of the transformative constitutional mandate of social justice in South Africa / Oliver Njuo FuoFuo, Oliver Njuo January 2014 (has links)
South Africa's transition to constitutional democracy marked the end of a system of government that perpetuated injustice on the basis of race. The previous system of government, underpinned by the principle of parliamentary supremacy, did not only exclude the majority of the population from public governance processes, it also economically exploited the majority of the population. As such, it laid the foundation for widespread poverty and inequalities in access to basic services. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (the Constitution), is committed to correcting these past injustices and aims to establish a society based on social justice. This constitutional vision finds expression in the notion of transformative constitutionalism. Klare introduced the notion of transformative constitutionalism over a decade ago. For purpose of this thesis, the notion represents the socio-economic and political vision of post-apartheid South Africa to eradicate extreme poverty and inequalities in access to basic services as well as establish a democratic system of government that is inclusive, caring, participatory, representative and accountable. It captures the constitutional commitment to establish and maintain a society based on social justice by inter alia, eradicating poverty and inequalities in access to social services. The realisation of the socio-economic rights entrenched in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution (by all organs of state) is one of the ways in which to contribute towards meeting this transformative constitutional mandate, and by extension, striving towards the attainment of social justice. Although transformative constitutionalism and the achievement of a socially just society remain an ideal, the Constitution as the supreme law in the country, obligates the state, constitutive of public and private entities, to work towards its realisation, to the fullest extent possible.
As part of post-apartheid institutional transformation, the Constitution established three spheres of government – national, provincial and local - which are distinct, interrelated and interdependent. All three spheres are obliged to operate in accordance with the principles of co-operative government and intergovernmental relations and are co-responsible for realising a number of constitutional objectives. Since 1996, the Constitution obliges local government (municipalities) to play an expanded "developmental" role. This has marked a move away from local government being regarded as merely a service delivery arm of government. xii
The extended function of local government that came about with the constitutional dispensation finds expression in the notion of "developmental local government".
This study is based on the premise that developmental local government must and can, together with the authorities in the other two spheres, contribute to transformative constitutionalism and social justice. Primarily, this study questions the extent to which the legal and policy framework on local government in South Africa enable local government (municipalities) to contribute towards realising the constitutional socio-economic rights underpinning the mandate of transformative constitutionalism.
This study presents a review of relevant literature in order to establish links between the theoretical concepts underpinning this thesis. It examines the legal and policy framework on "developmental" local government in South Africa and analyses the central legal framework for the realisation of socio-economic rights at the local government level. In addition, the study explores the relevance and potential of local government indigent policies and Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) - as legally prescribed governance instruments - in contributing towards a more just society by examining their underlying legal and policy framework. It further distils from the theories and perspectives of social justice, benchmarks to guide local government towards achieving the transformative constitutional mandate aimed at social justice. Based on the legal, policy and other gaps identified, recommendations are made on how to optimise the potential of IDPs and municipal indigent policies in contributing towards achieving social justice. / PhD (Law), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Regulation of land-based marine pollution in South Africa and France [electronic resource] / by Marie ParramonParramon, Marie January 2010 (has links)
The South African coastal and marine environment is an essential ecologic and
economic asset. Its associated services and products are substantially contributing to
economic growth and sustainable development of the country. However, it is
internationally and nationally recognised that land-based marine pollution (LBMP) is
the most important single risk to the health and sustainability of coastal and marine
waters and the associated ecosystems. The regulation of LBMP at the national level
is still difficult and challenging. The issue of LBMP management has only recently
been introduced in South Africa with the development of the National Programme of
Action to Protect Marine Environment from Land-based Activities, 2008. South Africa
is only starting to consider the question of LBMP regulation. This thesis aims to
conduct a critical analysis of the South African regulatory framework pertaining to
LBMP in comparison to international best practice and the French regulatory
framework, in order to identify the key South African challenges in this regard and to
make recommendations to address them.
In order to do so, this research commences by providing an analysis of LBMP and
the theoretical foundations associated with LBMP regulation, as promoted by
international best practice. The study identifies and assesses the main regulatory
features to be considered in the development, implementation and/or assessment of
a regulatory framework pertaining to LBMP. These features will form the
methodological framework to conduct the comparative legal assessment between the
French and South African regulatory frameworks pertaining to LBMP.
This thesis then provides a detailed and thorough legal analysis of the French and
South African regulatory frameworks pertaining to LBMP using the methodological
framework developed using guidance from international best practice.
Finally, based on lessons learnt from the comparative legal study, this study
concludes with a set of recommendations for the South African context. / Thesis (LL.D.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Geloofsvorming vanuit `n familiale perspektiefVeldsman, Hester Johanna 30 November 2005 (has links)
The researcher proposes working toward a more integrated approach of faith formation in the local church - where one's immediate family plays the central role and the congregation as the extended family functions as a support system.
The church as family becomes a community where faith formation is continually nurtured as a lifelong process and by means of all the ministries of the church. The conscious furthering of faith formation should, therefore, not be confined to the ambit of the Sunday School. Its target group cannot be limited to children and adolescents, but should be be broadened to include the adult members, thus serving the totality of the congregation.
The researcher proposes an approach where the different generations are not separated in the process of faith formation, but become an integrated learning community where all the different age groups and generations learn from each other and with each other. / Social work / M. Charge pumps and floating gate devices for switching applicationsMabuza, Bongani Christopher 27 November 2012 (has links)
On-chip impedance tuning is used to overcome IC perturbations caused by packaging stress. Tuning is more important for matching networks of radio frequency (RF) systems. Possible package resonance and fabrication process variations may cause instability, which is a major problem in RF systems. Thus, precautions need to be taken in order to maintain the overall stability of components and the final system itself. Electrically erasable programmable read-only memory switches (EEPROMs) occupy less die area compared to e-fuses and microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches, thus EEPROMs are proposed to be used as tuning switches in millimetre-wave (mm-wave) applications. It is anticipated that EEPROM switches will also enable multi-time programming because of the smaller area and the fact that more switches can be used for fine-tuning. The problem addressed in this research is how suitable EEPROMs are for switching applications in the mm-wave region. The main focus of this dissertation is to characterise the suitability of EEPROM switches qualitatively for tuning with systems operating in the mm-wave spectrum. 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS IBM 8HP process technology was used for simulation and the fabricated prototypes. The Dickson charge pump (CP), two voltage doubler CPs and four floating gate (FG) devices were investigated. Literature and theoretical verification was done using computer aided design (CAD) Cadence software through circuit analysis and the layouts were also designed for integrated circuit (IC) prototype fabrication. The qualitative evaluation of the hypothesis was based on investigating reliability issues, switching characteristics, CP output drive capability and mm-wave characterisation. The maximum measured drain current for FGs was 1.4 mA, 2.7 mA and 3 mA for devices 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The ratio between ON state switching current (after tunnelling) and OFF state switching current (after injection) was 1.5, 1.35 and 6 for devices 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The ratios correlated with the expected results in terms of FG transistor area: a high area results in a higher ratio. Despite the correlation, devices 2 and 3 may be unsuitable because the ratio is less than 2: a smaller ratio between the ON and OFF states could also result in higher losses. The Dickson CP achieved an output voltage of 2.96 V from an input of 1.2 V compared to 3.08 V as computed from the theoretical analysis and 4.5 V from the simulation results. The prototypes of the voltage doubler CP did not perform as expected: a maximum of 1 V was achieved compared to 4.1 – 5 V as in the simulation results. The suitability of FG devices for switching applications depends on the ratio of the ON and OFF states (associated to insertion and isolation losses): the larger the FG transistor area, the higher the ratio. The reliability issues are dominated by the oxide thickness of the transistor, which contributes to charge leakages and charge trapping: smaller transistor length causes more uncertainties. Charge trapping in the oxide increases the probability of leakages and substrate conduction, thus introduces more losses. Based on the findings of this research work, the FG devices promise to be suitable for mm-wave switching applications and there is a need for further research investigation to characterise the devices in the mm-wave region fully. Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering v University of Pretoria 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS IBM 8HP-prosestegnologie is gebruik vir simulasie en die vervaardigde prototipes. A conceptual framework for social media brand communication in non- profit organisations in South Africa: An integrated communication perspectiveSwart, Christelle 02 1900 (has links)
Text in English with abstracts in English, Afrikaans and isiZulu / Propelled by increased competition with the private sector and other similar organisations, the non-profit sector increasingly faces challenges to create meaningful interactions with stakeholders which, among other benefits, allow for differentiation and the creation of favourable and lasting impressions of the corporate brand. The main research aim of this study was to propose possible elements for a conceptual framework for the integration of non-profit organisations’ social media brand communication. The point of departure was that the achievement of a favourable corporate brand in the non-profit sector could, inter alia, be realised by following an integrated communication approach when utilising social media to communicate with stakeholders. The study is different from prior studies because of its specific interdisciplinary focus on the corporate brand, social media and integrated communication (IC), and the fact that it is merged into one study.
The research into the main contribution of the study was based on a thorough literature review focusing on the following objectives: to explore corporate branding and social media; and to describe elements that could constitute an integrated approach to social media brand communication. During the investigation into the topic, the social media focus of the study was framed on the basis of classical theoretical views, and the theory of and perspectives on human action, symbolic interaction and social presence. The absence of a single set of theoretical assumptions of social media necessitated an inductive reasoning process based on identified key elements of social media.
Subsequent to the literature review, the empirical research gathered invaluable insights from communication professionals in South African non-profit organisations, and who are responsible for communication by means of social media. Finally, and following the measurement of the proposed elements, the objective of proposing possible elements for the integration of social media brand communication and presenting it in a conceptual framework was achieved. The conceptual framework was based on three foundational principles, namely a corporate brand focus and a philosophy of communication integration, underpinned by social media.
The proposed conceptual framework should provide new insights into and contribute to the existing body of knowledge on organisational communication.
Ngokugqugquzelwa ukwanda kokuncitisana kwemikhakha ezimele nezinye izinhlangano ezifanayo, umkhakha ongenzi inzuzo uyaqhubeka njalo nokubhekana nezinselelo zokwenza ukuthi ukuxhumana kahle nabanye ababambe iqhaza okuwukuthi, phakathi kokunye okungazuzwa, kuvumele ukwahlukaniswa kanye nokwakhiwa kwezimpawu zemifanekiso yenkampani ezikahle futhi eziyohlala isikhathi eside.
